Its a 90-minute documentary about the 8-year quest of filmmaker John Chester and his wife, Molly, a chef, as they decamp from their small San- ta Monica apartment with their rescue mutt to 200 acres of barren farmland and a dream of farming in harmony with nature. Based on that synopsis alone, I can imagine your eyes glazing over! But please trust me: This is a film you will want to see—for its breathtaking cinematography, engaging characters (human and other!) as well as its thoughtful themes. Although this is not a faith-based film, it is nonetheless a beautiful artistic elaboration on many of the themes of Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical letter, Laudato Sí: On the Care of our Common Home. In fact, as the film progressed, these words from the encyclical came to mind: If we approach nature and the environment withoutopenness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs. By contrast, if we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously (#11). Dear friends in the Risen Lord,

As you read this, I’ll be on my way to a week of vacation followed by a week of study at Georgetown University. In between the two, I’ll return for a few hours next Sunday to celebrate Pentecost with you and to enjoy our International Potluck Supper. I hope to see many of you there.

In the last hours before I departed, I saw a movie that I can’t stop thinking and talking about: The Biggest Little Farm. It’s a 90-minute documentary about the 8-year quest of filmmaker John Chester and his wife, Molly, a chef, as they decamp from their small San-ta Monica apartment with their rescue mutt to 200 acres of barren farmland and a dream of farming in harmony with nature.

Based on that synopsis alone, I can imagine your eyes glazing over! But please trust me: This is a film you will want to see—for its breathtaking cinematography, engaging characters (human and other!) as well as its thoughtful themes. (Parental warning: alt-hough the film is rated PG and contains no human sex or violence, it’s all about “the birds and the bees,” and nature’s cycle of life, death and rebirth, in a way that could be distressing for young children.)

Although this is not a faith-based film, it is nonetheless a beautiful artistic elaboration on many of the themes of Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical letter, Laudato Sí: On the Care of our Common Home. In fact, as the film progressed, these words from the encyclical came to mind:

If we approach nature and the environment without… openness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs. By contrast, if we feel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously (#11).

(It made The Biggest Little Farm even better to learn that Molly Chester is a cousin once removed of IHM’s own Nikki VanDerGrinten, the founder of our Laudato Sí Action Team!)

Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

We thank Father Victor Galier, pastor of St. Anthony’s Church

in the West End and Father John Adamski,

the retired pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church

in the Old Fourth Ward, who assist us this weekend

while Monsignor Al is away.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: ‘Holy Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one….’” — John 17:20-21

It is through the stewardship of sharing our blessings with others, and caring for their needs, that we truly become one Body of Christ. Let us always pray to God our Father that we recognize these opportunities as they arise.

HAVE YOU REMEMBERED IHM IN YOUR WILL? A bequest to your parish will allow you to continue in death the Christian steward-ship you practice in life. The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia can assist you in remembering IHM in your Will. Those who make a bequest or a planned gift to IHM become members of the parish Legacy Society and the Archdiocesan Deo Gratias Society. For more information, contact Juliette Greco of the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia at [email protected] or 404-497-9440.

When working with the poor, disadvantages are never far. In a recent case, this was very evident.

A lady who is currently on disability reached out to St. Vincent de Paul because her rent money had been stolen. She leaves in an apartment complex in an area where crime is extremely high. As a result of robbery, she was late on her rent and late fees where starting to pile up. This situation was adding stress to her and the lives of her niece and her three children. Would eviction be far behind?

And then a miracle occurred! Turned out there was no robbery. A good Samaritan found the money order and turned it into the Leasing Office! And the leasing manager waived the late fee, too! Our Vincentians were most pleased of course. This outcome is quite rare indeed. Happily, this situation resolved itself and the family was able to pay the rent on their own.

Most of the time, our neighbors in need are not so fortunate, and their needs go on. Thankfully, due to the support of our IHM parishioners, St. Vincent de Paul is able to keep helping the poor overcome many obstacles that come their way.

If a parishioner needs help, they can call 678-892-6163. If you would like more information about volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul, reach out to Robin Patton at [email protected].

The Focolare Movement, founded in Italy in 1943 by Servant of God Chiara Lubich, promotes ideals of unity and universal brotherhood and oper-ates in 180 nations with over 140,000 members. PARISH PICNIC! Saturday, September 28 Save the date for the IHM Parish Picnic, and come enjoy a day of food, fun and fellowship!

Each year the Eucharistic Congress brings together Catholics from across the archdiocese and the country to celebrate the visible, living presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The Arch-diocese of Atlanta invites you to join us for this year’s Eu-charistic Congress at the Georgia International Convention Center, June 21 and 22.

The theme of the 2019 Eucharistic Congress comes from Luke 22:19, “This is My Body Given Up for You.” Let’s welcome the Lord, who gave his life for us, into our hearts.

PENTECOST INTERCESSIONS June 8 & 9

Next weekend we will once again mark the Solemnity of Pentecost by offering the intercessions at Mass in the various languages spoken in our parish commu-nity. If you would be willing to trans-late a brief petition and read it during

one of our Pentecost Masses, please email Shelly White at [email protected]. Thank you for helping us celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit, creating from the many human languages one voice to proclaim one faith.

FAITH FORMATION ENROLLMENT 2019-2020 Enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year is now open to all parishioners. Enroll online at ihmatlanta.org/enrollment. Hard copies of enrollment forms are availa-ble in the parish office.

GETTING TO KNOW OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS What is the GIFT Program? Growing in Faith Together (GIFT), our parish Sunday school for elementary-age children, supports parents in their effort to fulfill the promise they made at their child’s baptism: “to bring him/her up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor.” We seek to help parents pass the Cath-olic faith on to their children and make it come alive in their everyday life.

During the 2019-20 school year, classes will take place in the IHM Elementary School building during one of two time slots on Sundays:

Morning Session: 10:15-11:15 a.m. Evening Session: 6:15-7:30 p.m.

Led by trained catechists, children learn in grade-level groups of 10-20 students while parents participate in concurrent adult faith formation offerings. All classes are taught in English, using the bilingual Finding God curriculum from Loyola Press. When is my child eligible to receive First Holy Communion? In accordance with Archdiocesan guidelines, a student may be considered eligible to receive the Eucharist next year if he or she:

Is a baptized Catholic who attends Mass regularly

Is in the 2nd grade or older

Received religious education during the 2018-2019 school year, either at a Catholic school or in a parish program (i.e., our GIFT program).
