In December, Cuyahoga Community College student John Powers, the first recipient of the Richard N. Connelly Scholarship, completed a twelve-week co-op assignment at the District. “I shadowed employees in Safety & Security, WQIS, Analytical Services, SSMO, and Engineering,” Powers said. “As a Construction Engineering major, it was very useful to see active sewer systems and to understand the concepts involved in designing and maintaining them.” “I believe the District is working to make our community a better place, and I’m grateful for this experience,” he said. “I thank everybody who made it possible.” The scholarship, created to honor the legacy of Superintendent of Environmental Services and 30-year District employee Richard Connelly, supports Tri-C students who major in science programs.
SCHOLARSHIP NEWS
SSMO’s Bill Takacs (left) and co-op student Nicole
Stapleton designed and created a portable, working model of a
sewer system.
The model is made out of PVC tubing and acrylic. A compressor forces water through the PVC.
The model demonstrates stormwater runoff, combined sewer overflows, and storage tunnel capabilities, and it even features
a scale model of Maintenance Services Superintendent Ron Czerski in action (see below)!
Bill and Nicole worked on several prototypes
before arriving at a version that met the requirements of SSMO Assistant
Manager Brian Stapleton. The model made its public debut in January at the District’s Employee Appreciation Night at
Great Lakes Science Center, and will serve as a helpful addition at
future outreach events.
