This Holiday issue of Squawk Talk is dedicated

to the health and happiness of psittacines —

both our own and those who reside in the

sanctuaries and rescues that the Florida West

Coast Avian Society supports. The first thing that you will see on the next page is an expanded “ADOPTION CORNER.” Both of the rescues in our area, Parrot Outreach Society and Birds of Paradise Sanctuary and Rescue have taken in a lot of birds recently. I hope that at least a few of our members have room in their homes and hearts to ADOPT one of their birds. If a permanent adoption is not possible then maybe you could FOSTER one of their parrots. It could be in your home, or you can provide financial support. Contact information for both organizations is on the next page. If, like me, you can’t take in any more feathered friends then maybe you can DONATE YOUR TIME at one of the rescues/sanctuaries. Deb Huckaby, Birds of Paradise, is setting up a new and expanded facility for the parrots in her sanctuary and could use your help. Pam Hill, Parrot Outreach Society — has a dedicated group of volunteers but I know she wouldn’t turn away new volunteers. Finally, contact Ginger’s Two Feathers Wildlife Center to volun-teer, she needs some holiday cheer too!

If you’d rather make your donation another way check out page 6 for WISH LISTS from all 3 groups. Please read the article on page 9 — it contains information on having a Bird-Safe Holiday!

BIRDS of PARADISE SANCTUARY & RESCUE’s December Adoptable Parrots

Grace — 15 year old Double Yellow head Amazon (for adoption or possible foster)

Grace is a very sweet girl, very people oriented to women and very talkative. For the most part, she is very calm and laid back. She doesn’t get upset in public and is not shy about talking in front of almost all strangers. She plays well with her toys and entertains herself well. Grace has a very large vocabulary and can spend long periods of time talking to herself in a low, sweet voice. She loves to take showers on a stand in the shower. The best situation would be in a home with no more than a few other birds since she does show jealousy. She has a nice sized, white dome top cage including toys, perches, etc. Grace is a people oriented bird and would not be suited to aviary life. She needs an Amazon experienced person who has the time to give her at least a couple of hours of one on one time each day.

ALSO AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION:

An adorable LOVEBIRD, PACO the African Grey, and SUZIE the Bare-eyed

Cockatoo.

Have A Bird-Safe Holiday! By Amy Boyd

1. TREE (CHRISTMAS or Hanukkah) - A tree in your house offers a great view around the room

and plenty of opportunity to perch, but it’s not a good idea to allow your pet bird to settle on it. We

all know how inquisitive our birds are! Unfortunately the main method of exploration is with the beak

and tongue, but certain things just shouldn’t be explored:

Branches – (natural) tree sap on feathers, poisoning from chemicals (especially flame

retardants).

Branches – (artificial) poisoning hazard.

2. PLANTS – Be careful to keep those popular holiday season plants away from inquisitive beaks.

These plants may pose a toxic danger, not just from the plant itself but any insecticides used to treat

them on the surface or systemically:

Bulbs – Amaryllis is one, but any bulb.

Poinsettias

Winter cherry (Solanum)

Ivy

Mistletoe

3. LIGHTING and ORNAMENTS - We love them, and many parrots would like to play with them,

these tempting items pose hidden dangers:

LIGHTS – risk of injury (burn to the tongue) or electrocution if the cord is pierced.

ORNAMENTS – risk of injury from sharp edges if broken, possible poisoning hazard if chewed,

and intestinal blockage if swallowed whether the item is toxic or not.

PINE CONES – These are great chew toys, especially for birds that pluck. Don’t use any that

you find lying around outside - the tree may have been treated with chemicals or the pine

cone could have been contaminated by wild birds or contact with the soil. If you want to use

pine cones purchase ones specifically sold for parrots.

4. HOLIDAY FOODS – Parrots are flock birds and, as such, will often beg for the food that we eat,

even going so far as to steal it off our plates! However, use caution as some items are suitable while

others are not:

COOKED TURKEY - There is no need to fear if your parrot eats a small piece of turkey. It’s

actually a good source of protein but, even so, make sure it has been thoroughly cooked!

TURKEY BONES - These will crack and splinter easily, and may cause injury to your parrot’s

mouth.

AVOCADO – May pose a poisoning hazard.

VEGETABLES (raw) – Items from a raw veggie tray are a great treat, minus the olives (too

salty).

VEGETABLES (cooked) – This can be a great treat for parrots of all sizes, but avoid the heavy,

salty sauces.

NUTS - Larger parrots love nuts in the shell such as almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts. Bigger

macaws can even crack Brazil nuts. Organic is best. Don’t overdo, nuts are very fatty and

should not be on the menu for birds that are already obese or tend to obesity, especially Amazon parrots.

NO PEANUTS and NO SALTED NUTS.

5. BEVERAGES – STICK TO WATER! Avoid giving your parrot access to these beverages:

SODA/POP/COLA – Way too much sugar! Artificial sweeteners are bad for us - don’t take a

chance with your fid!

COFFEE – Caffeine is not good for parrots.

ALCOHOL – a BIG NO-NO!! Bad for the liver, and poisonous when imbibed in volume.

EGG NOG – Same as alcohol, plus it’s way too rich if it was made with whole

eggs. Cont’d on pg. 13

Have A Bird-Safe Christmas! Continued from page 9

7. PARTIES – Who doesn’t love a party, but having your parrot attend is not always such a good idea:

STRESS – Most birds can become stressed having to meet a lot of new people.

SAFETY – Not all your guests may be aware of what is and isn’t safe for your bird in the way of

interaction, food and beverages.

ESCAPE – Even if your parrot isn’t fully flighted there is the risk of him/her escaping out an

open door as people arrive and depart.

INJURY – A parrot off the perch can be injured, even severely, if stepped on.

SMOKE – Hopefully your house is a ‘no-smoking zone’! If not, your bird’s health is at risk when

exposed to smoke – whether cigarette or marijuana.

8. MISCELLANEOUS –

FIREPLACE – a fire burning in the grate can severely injure, or kill, a bird if it flies into it. Even

if the fire is extinguished a bird can receive a bad burn for the hot coals. If the flue is not work-

ing properly smoke coming into the house is dangerous. Chemicals on the wood also pose an

inhaled poison hazard.

KITCHEN – Keep your bird out of the kitchen, period. Open oven doors invite investigation. Hot

burners – gas, electric or ceramic – can injure. Uncovered pots of boiling water, oil, even hot

sauces can pose a life-threatening risk. If the bird doesn’t die from the burn it can still die from

inhalation pneumonia if the liquid is inhaled!

CANDLES - Can be dangerous on many levels. Candles are one of the most common causes of

house fires this time of year, scented candles can be an inhaled poison, same for wicks with

lead cores. It also poses a burn hazard to inquisitive fids.

I hope these tips keep your feathered pets safe during the coming Holidays!
