SPS 4000

1-4 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

The main components of the SPS 4000 are de-scribed in the following paragraphs and illus-trated in Figure 1-3.

a. Manifold

The manifold provides a mounting platformfor the circuit board(s) and terminations andcontains the electrical feedthroughs. Also, calibration gases are piped into and se-quenced through solenoids mounted on themanifold.

b. Calibration Gas Solenoids

The calibration gas solenoids sequence thecalibration gases. One solenoid controlscalibration gas 1 (high calibration gas), andthe other controls calibration gas 2 (low

calibration gas). The solenoids activate anddeactivate to allow the calibration gases toflow between the sequencer and Oxymitter4000.

c. Pressure Switch

The pressure switch detects if the pressureof a calibration gas is low, which can becaused by an empty gas bottle, a discon-nected gas line, etc. Calibration is prohib-ited when calibration gas pressure is low.

d. Power Supply Board

This board converts the incoming line volt-age from AC to DC for use by the solenoids, terminations, and the programmable logicdevice. The power supply board also has a5 A, 250 V, slow blow fuse.

e. Interface Board

The interface board contains a programma-ble logic device (PLD) that has the elec-tronics to energize and deenergize thesolenoids based on a signal from the Oxy-mitter 4000.

f. Calibration Gas Flowmeter

The calibration gas flowmeter indicates theflow rate of calibration gas flowing to theOxymitter 4000.

g. Reference Air Flowmeter (Optional)

The reference air flowmeter indicates theamount of reference air continuously flowingto the Oxymitter 4000.

h. Pressure Regulator (Optional)

The pressure regulator ensures the instru-ment air (reference air) flowing to the Oxy-mitter 4000 is at a constant pressure [20 psi(138 kPa)]. The regulator also has a filter toremove particulates in the reference air anda drain valve to bleed the moisture that col-lects in the filter bowl.

i. Terminal Strip

The terminal strip housed within the termi-nal cover provides convenient access for allsignal and power user connections.

1-5 THEORY OF OPERATION

The Oxymitter 4000 is one of the few instru-ments found in industry that permit the perma-nent piping of a calibration standard into theprobe. Most instruments measuring pressure, flow, or temperature require that a calibrationstandard be brought to the instrument or thatthe instrument be taken to the calibration sourcein the instrument shop.

The permanent calibration gas connections al-low for auto-calibrations to occur without op-erator intervention. The following paragraphs

describe how an Oxymitter 4000 is autocali-brated when used with the SPS 4000.

a. In addition to the calibration methods avail-able via the Oxymitter 4000 keypad, HARTcommunicator, AMS software, or a remotecontact, the SPS 4000 works in conjunctionwith the Oxymitter 4000s CAL RECOM-MENDED feature to perform an autocalibra-tion. This feature automatically per-forms animpedance check every hour on the Oxy-mitter 4000. If a calibration is recommendedand its contact output signal is set forhandshaking with the sequencer, theOxymitter 4000 sends a signal to the se-quencer. The sequencer automatically per-forms a calibration upon receiving thesignal.

Thus, no human interface is required for theautomatic calibration to take place.

b. When a calibration is required, the Oxymit-ter 4000 sends a signal to the programma-ble logic device (PLD) on the interfaceboard of the sequencer. The PLD energizesthe calibration gas 1 (high O2) solenoid.Calibration gas 1 then flows through the se-quencer to the Oxymitter 4000. The Oxy-mitter 4000 measures the oxygen content ofcalibration gas 1 and sends a signal to thesequencer indicating that it received thegas. When the sequencer receives the sig-nal, the PLD deenergizes the calibrationgas 1 solenoid.

c. Next, the PLD energizes the calibration gas2 (low O2) solenoid, and calibration gas 2then flows through the sequencer to theOxymitter 4000. The Oxymitter 4000 meas-ures the oxygen content of calibration gas 2and sends a signal to the sequencer indi-cating that it received the gas. After meas-uring the two calibration gases, theOxymitter 4000 automatically makes an in-ternal calibration adjustment and sends thesignal to the sequencer. When the se-quencer receives the signal, the PLDdeenergizes the calibration gas 2 solenoid.

3. Next, connect the reference air fromthe upper 1/4 in. tube fitting on the ref-erence air flowmeter to the REF GASport on the Oxymitter 4000.

b. Calibration Gas (Figure 2-1)

1. Connect O2 calibration gas 1 (highcalibration gas) to the HIGH CAL GASIN 1/4 in. tube fitting on the top of themanifold. Ensure the calibration gaspressure is set at 20 psi (138 kPa).

Instrument air is not recommended forthe high calibration gas. Do not use100% nitrogen as a low gas (zero gas).It is suggested that the low (zero) gasbe between 0.4% and 2.0% O2. Do notuse gases with hydrocarbon concen-trations of more than 40 parts per mil-lion. Failure to use proper gases willresult in erroneous readings.

2. Connect O2 calibration gas 2 (low cali-bration gas) to the LOW CAL GAS IN1/4 in. tube fitting on the top of themanifold. Ensure the calibration gaspressure is set at 20 psi (138 kPa).

3. Connect the calibration gas from theupper 1/4 in. tube fitting on the calibra-tion gas flowmeter to the check valveconnected to the CAL GAS port on theOxymitter 4000.

SECTION 3OPERATION

3-1 OVERVIEW

This section specifies the requirements to set upan Oxymitter 4000 calibration and how to verifythe calibration gas flow setup. It also explainsthe differences between automatic and semi-automatic calibrations and how to initiate them.

3-2 CALIBRATION REQUIREMENTS

a. Two tanks of precision calibration gas mix-tures are required. Recommended calibra-tion gases are nominally 0.4% and 8.0%oxygen in nitrogen.

Do not use 100% nitrogen as a low gas(zero gas). It is suggested that gas forthe low (zero) be between 0.4% and2.0% O2. Do not use gases with hy-drocarbon concentrations of morethan 40 parts per million. Failure touse proper gases will result in errone-ous readings.

In addition to the optional disposable gasbottles available from Rosemount, two ad-ditional sources of calibrated gas mixturesare:

SPS 4000

3-3 CALIBRATION GAS FLOW SETUP

After installing the SPS 4000 as described inSection 2, calibrate the Oxymitter 4000 to verifySPS 4000 operation and the communication linkbetween the sequencer and Oxymitter 4000.

a. Verify that both calibration gases are con-nected to the SPS 4000. Also verify that thepressure regulators on both calibration gasbottles are set to 20 psig (138 kPa gage).

b. Initiate a semi-automatic calibration usingone of the methods specified in paragraph3-5.

NOTEOnly set the calibration gas flowmeterupon initial installation and afterchanging the diffusion element in theOxymitter 4000. Refer to the flowmeteradjustments in Section 4 for more in-formation.

c. As the Oxymitter 4000 and SPS 4000 applythe first calibration gas, set the calibrationgas flowmeter to 5 scfh. During the applica-tion of the second calibration gas, verify thatthe flowmeter reads 5 scfh. If not, adjust thepressure regulator on the second calibrationgas bottle so the 5 scfh flow is provided.

3-4 AUTOMATIC CALIBRATION

Automatic calibrations require no operator ac-tion and can be performed through the Oxymit-ter 4000 CAL RECOMMENDED feature orthrough scheduled time intervals that can beprogrammed through the HART/AMS for theOxymitter 4000. In addition, the calibrationgases must be permanently piped to the Oxy-mitter 4000.

a. CAL RECOMMENDED

If the Oxymitter 4000 is configured forhandshake mode with the SPS 4000, theOxymitter 4000 can initiate a calibration bysending a signal to the sequencer when theCAL RECOMMENDED LED activates. Toenable handshake mode, the Oxymitter4000 logic I/O must be set for mode 8.

Handshake mode is configured at the fac-tory or can be accessed through HART/

AMS. Refer to the logic I/O information inthe HART/AMS section of the Oxymitter4000 Oxygen Transmitter Instruction Bulle-tin for more information.

b. Timed Interval

An automatic calibration can also be pro-grammed to occur at a specific time interval,in hours, using the HART communicator orAMS software. Refer to the HART/AMSsection of the Oxymitter 4000 OxygenTransmitter Instruction Bulletin for thisprocedure.

3-5 SEMI-AUTOMATIC CALIBRATION

Semi-automatic calibrations are operator initi-ated and can be performed using the Oxymitter4000 keypad, HART handheld communicator/AMS software, or a remote contact. In addition, the calibration gases must be permanentlypiped to the Oxymitter 4000.

a. Oxymitter 4000 Keypad

A semi-automatic calibration can be initiatedby pressing the CAL button on the Oxymit-ter 4000 keypad. For more information, re-fer to the Oxymitter 4000 OxygenTransmitter Instruction Bulletin.

b. HART Handheld Communicator/AMSSoftware

A semi-automatic calibration can be initiatedby connecting the HART handheld commu-nicator, or AMS software, to the Oxymitter4000 4-20 mA signal line and using theHART communicator keypad or computerkeyboard to access the applicable calibra-tion menu. Refer to the Oxymitter 4000Oxygen Transmitter Instruction Bulletin orthe available HART documentation for moreinformation.

c. Remote Contact

A semi-automatic calibration can be initiatedusing a remote contact such as a cus-tomers control system. The remote contactprocesses the calibration command on aPC and sends the signal to the Oxymitter4000. For more information on remote-sitecalibrations, refer to the documentation forthe system in use.

4-6 CHECK VALVE REPLACEMENT

The check valve may stick or become pluggedover time. Replace when necessary. If conden-sation deposits are noted upon removal, con-sider insulating the check valve.

4-7 PRESSURE REGULATOR (OPTIONAL)MAINTENANCE

a. Pressure Adjustments

Reference air pressure regulator (1, Figure4-1) is factory set to 20 psi (138 kPa). Ad-just using the knob on top of the pressureregulator if necessary.

Do not use fingers to release valvestem. The valve may release air at highpressures and cause injury.

b. Condensation Drain

To drain excess moisture from the filter bowlof reference air pressure regulator (1), usea screwdriver or comparable tool to periodi-cally release the valve stem on the bottomof the pressure regulator.

4-8 FLOWMETER ADJUSTMENTS

a. Calibration Gas Flowmeter

Calibration gas flowmeter (46, Figure 4-1)regulates the calibration gas flow and mustbe set to 5 scfh. However, only adjust theflowmeter to 5 scfh after placing a new dif-fusion element on the end of the Oxymitter4000. Adjusting the flowmeter at any othertime can pressurize the cell and bias thecalibration.

In applications with a heavy dust loading, the O2 probe diffusion element may becomeplugged over time, causing a slower speedof response. The best way to detect aplugged diffusion element is to note the timeit takes the Oxymitter 4000 to return to thenormal process reading after the last cali-bration gas is removed and the calibrationgas line is blocked off. A plugged elementalso can be indicated by a slightly lowerreading on the flowmeter.

Change the diffusion element when thecalibration gas flowmeter reads slightlylower during calibration or when the re-sponse time to the process flue gases be-comes very slow. Each time the diffusionelement is changed, reset the calibrationgas flowmeter to 5 scfh and calibrate theOxymitter 4000. For more information onchanging the diffusion element, refer to theinstruction bulletin for the Oxymitter 4000 inuse.

b. Reference Air Flowmeter (Optional)

Reference air flowmeter (45) regulates thereference air and must be set to 2 scfh.Adjust the flow with the knob on the bottomof the reference air flowmeter whennecessary.

4-9 FLOWMETER REPLACEMENT

Use this procedure to replace either referenceair flowmeter (45, Figure 4-1) or calibration gasflowmeter (46).

a. Turn off power to the system.

b. Shut off the calibration gases at thecylinders.

c. Loosen, but do not remove, four screws(42) securing flowmeter bracket (50) tomounting bracket (3).

d. Flex the bottom of flowmeter bracket (50)downward and away to disengage and re-move the flowmeter bracket from mountingbracket (3).

SECTION 5TROUBLESHOOTING

5-1 OVERVIEW

This section describes the SPS 4000 trouble-shooting procedures. Additional troubleshootinginformation can be found in the Oxymitter 4000Oxygen Transmitter Instruction Bulletin.

Install all protective equipment coversand safety ground leads after trouble-shooting. Failure to replace coversand ground leads could result in seri-ous injury or death.

5-2 SPS 4000 TROUBLESHOOTING

Use the CAL FAIL and IN CAL relay outputs toidentify possible SPS faults.

a. If a calibration was not successfully com-pleted, the SPS 4000 sends a CAL FAILcontact indication to the control room. Todetermine if the SPS 4000 caused the failedcalibration, go to the Oxymitter 4000 site toview the keypad. Or, access the HART/AMSmenus. For more information on HART/AMS, refer to the HART/AMS section in theOxymitter 4000 Oxygen Transmitter Instruc-tion Bulletin.

1. If no alarms are indicated on the key-pad or in the HART/AMS STATUS sub-menu, the calibration did not fail be-cause of an Oxymitter 4000 fault. Therefore, a calibration gas flow prob-lem occurred. Refer to Table 5-1 orFigure 5-1 to troubleshoot the SPS4000.

2. If the LAST CAL FAILED alarm is indi-cated on the keypad or in the HART/AMS STATUS sub-menu, the failure is

due to either a bad Oxymitter 4000 cellor a calibration gas flow problem.

(a) Verify your calibration setup perparagraph 2-3 in Section 2, IN-STAL-LATION; Section 3, OP-ERATION; and paragraph 4-8 inSection 4, MAINTENANCE ANDSERVICE.

(b) Perform another calibration andmonitor the process. If the calibra-tion fails before both calibrationgases finish sequencing, a gasflow problem exists. Refer to Table5-1 or Figure 5-1 to troubleshootthe SPS 4000.

If the calibration setup is correctand the Oxymitter 4000 indicatesan invalid slope fault (fault 12) be-fore the gases are purged and alast calibration failed fault (fault 14)after the gases are purged, replacethe Oxymitter 4000 cell per theOxymitter 4000 Oxygen Transmit-ter Instruction Bulletin.

b. If a semi-automatic or manual calibration isbeing performed but no 5 - 30 VDC relayoutput contact (IN CAL or CAL FAIL) is be-ing received by the control room, the inter-face board relays are malfunctioning.Replace the interface board per paragraph4-3 in Section 4, MAINTENANCE ANDSERVICE.

NOTEIf the unit is performing frequent auto-calibrations, investigate at the Oxymit-ter 4000 site or using HART/AMS. Thiscondition may indicate an aging cell inthe Oxymitter 4000.
