Spring has definitely arrived in the San Fernando Valley. The sun is out, the weather is warm and the rain has run its course, hopefully! Now is the perfect opportunity for your family to get involved in an array of fun programs at the North Valley Family YMCA.

Our annual Healthy Kids Day and Camp Sign Up Day is on Sat. April 27th. There will be lots of fun events for the entire family including inflatable jumpers, a rock climbing wall, cooking demonstrations, health booth, a lecture hall and much more. This is an extremely pop-ular community event you won’t want to miss. Every year, hundreds of families join us for the excitement, so make sure yours is one of them.

Did you know that the Y offers special fitness programs just for teens & tweens? We offer youth and teen fitness programs including car-diovascular training, resistance training and strength and endurance programs, just to name a few. Allow your child to safely challenge themselves physically in a fun, supportive environment.

The Y camping programs are a blast! I always remember how much fun my son and daughter had when we went to Camp Fox together with the Guides and Princesses program. The Trailblazer canoe trip brought us closer together as we enjoyed canoeing, hiking, exploring and the camaraderie around the evening campfires. So, whether it’s letting your kids go solo to a resident or licensed summer camp, or family time with Y Guides, these are truly unforgettable times you will reminisce about for a long time.

So, lose the winter coat and join us at the Y where new and fun pro-grams abound with offerings for everyone in your family.

The North Valley Family YMCA is starting our first ever Model United Nations delegation, which is for middle school students in 6th to 8th grade. Starting February 15th, our MUN delegation will have weekly meetings to discuss and take part in activities the real U.N. participates in. Delegates in MUN will research, debate and establish policies, treaties and resolutions focusing on international issues; in-cluding disputes between countries, border crisis, stabilizing financial markets and dealing with hunger, disease and poverty. Delegates will also make friends from across the state, learn to speak in public, and gain the confidence and self-esteem in all aspects of their life.

Registration for the program is $50. Each student registered will receive a club sweatshirt, invitations to all meetings, trainings, com-munity events, and a spot and voice in our delegation. This fee does not cover overnight trips to our 2 statewide conferences, where del-egates will learn more about the U.N., meet students from across the state, and have a great time preparing for their roles with their peers.

Our first training Conference is at Camp Roberts in Paso Robles, CA, in March and our second and culminating conference is our MUN Summit and VIP Dinner. It will be held in Irvine, CA, on April 25th - 28th. This summit is where we bring the entire program together and assume our roles with our peers from across the state.

KIdS’ StUffNeW Adult Spring Basketball league (men’s and Women)

NeW Adult co-ed Spring volleyball league

Should you need them, here are four good reasons to join an adult sports league even if you don’t consider yourself an athlete.

Reason #1: Break out of your mundane exercise routine. Do you get tired of doing the same workout over and over again? When you play a sport, you’ll have so much fun that you won’t think of your games or matches as exercise. And because you have a sport to play, you’ll be inspired to get in better shape, which gives you more purpose and motivation to stick to a regular fitness routine. It’s a win-win!

Reason #2: Learn (or hone) a new skill. Is there a sport that you have always wanted to play but just never learned? When you find an activity that you enjoy, your chances of sticking with it are higher, especially as you sharpen your skills and see yourself improving over time. Practice makes perfect!

Reason #3: Develop some new friendships. Joining a recreational sports league is a great way to meet new people and spark new friendships.

Participants are formed into tribes with other fathers and sons, or fathers and daughters. These small groups (10 dads and 10 children) meet once or twice a month in the evenings and take part in a monthly weekend activity. In the small tribal group setting, children and their fathers share responsibility for plan-ning and participation in various group activities including crafts, songs, games and weekend events.

The various tribes form a larger group, The Nation, consisting of 18-22 tribes. Nation events, scheduled August through June, include weekends at Camp Fox (Catalina Island), Winter weekend at Camp Whittle (near Big Bear) and a Spring Family Campout. One-day events consist of Ice Skating, Mystery Event, Cosmic Bowling and the Nation Picnic.
