In Remembrance

Lifelong Akronite and UAWC member, Barbara Clark passed away on

January, 12, 2018. Barbara was a graduate of The University of Akron

(BA) and Kent State University (MLS) and worked as a librarian at

UA’s Bierce Library, retiring in 1986 after 36 years of service. After

retirement she became an active member of The University of Akron

Women's Club and the University's Retiree Association, The College

Club of Akron, the Akron Chapter Daughters of the American

Revolution, the Ellet Alumni Association as well as a member of the

Mayflower Society and First Families of Ohio. Barbara was also a

20-year volunteer of the Akron Symphony where you would usually

find her on a Thursday. Book Review was her favorite Women's Club

activity. A memorial gathering was held on Saturday, January 20,

Josephine Anikeeff, 100, of Akron, passed away peacefully in her

sleep on January 13, 2018. just 15 days before her 101st birthday.

Jo was an active member of the Akron University Women’s Club, The

League of Women Voters, and the Braewick Circle Garden Club. In

addition to her love of the Cleveland Cavilers, LeBron James, scratch-

off lottery tickets, bingo games, and current events, she actively em-

braced technology, enjoying her pink Apple iPhone to keep in touch

with her family and friends of all ages. Although there was no memorial

service. Jo would like for you to remember the many good times, to be

happy, and to enjoy life.

Lady Zips beat

Kent State Flashes

UA Women’s Basketball thrilled our enthusiastic

members and friends on a chilly January after-

noon. It was so exciting to see the fast-paced and

hard-fought game between our Lady Zips and the

visiting Kent State ladies. UA led almost all of the

game and really made some wonderful plays to win

and take back the Wagon Wheel trophy that had

eluded them the previous year. Our own Carrie

Tomko was a guest of the Lady Zips and enjoyed all

the pre-game and post-game activities – quite an

honor. Each year we end the game with a group

photo featuring Zippy; and even President Matthew

Wilson joined our celebration this year. It was a fun

activity - GO ZIPS!!

On January 24, 2018, eight members of the

Discussion Group (pictured on left), met at

the TGI Friday’s in Green to discuss

Evangelical Christians and how they effect

government. We enjoyed a lively discussion

over wine and appetizers. Our next meeting

will be at The Mustard Seed in Highland

Square on Thursday, February 22nd at 7 p.m.

We will discuss Immigration. In March we will

move back to Green TGI Friday’s and our

topic will be Health Care. All view points are

welcome. Please join us!

Musings About My Years as a University of Akron Women’s

Club Board Member

By Diana Kunze

Current President and Former Program Chair

As my time as president of this won-

derful organization is drawing to an

end, I would like to reflect upon the

five years I have served in a couple

capacities as a board member. Five years ago, as I was heading for retirement

from my very gratifying and beloved job as German teacher for the Hudson City

Schools, I received two phone calls within a couple of days: one from the LWV

in Hudson, urging me to join their board as a “Director”, and one from The Uni-

versity of Akron Women’s Club, seeking someone to fill the niche of Program

Director. Fearing the vast emptiness of retirement, I was delighted to agree to

both positions and thus headed full throttle into the world of volunteerism. These

board positions have kept my mind stimulated, but above and beyond that they

bridged the gap between gainful employment and retirement by allowing me to

serve my community and yes, my country, in a meaningful and effective way.

After five years of service, I marvel at the dedicated women in our University

Women’s Club, who for many years have given of their time and talents to sup-

port this organization, whose main focus is to raise scholarship funds for deserv-

ing young women at The University of Akron. Their leadership is exemplary and

their dedication to uphold the traditions of this very fine organization contagious.

As someone who only joined at a later point in her life I so appreciate the oppor-

tunity to find inclusion in this club and the opportunity to share my enthusiasm

and talents with these fine women and to have the opportunity to forge new

friendships with like-minded women. Hopefully, in the years to come, many

more women associated with The University of Akron will recognize the value of

an organization, which since 1923 has promoted social interaction and support-

ed education for women, so that the Women’s Club will thrive for years to come.

With firm conviction, I can only stress that getting involved in running the show

will challenge boredom and, in my case, has satisfied my never ending quest to

contribute to society and be a participant rather than a bystander.
