FOUNDATION DONATION SHOWS THE WAY

A £500,000 donation from the Foundation to OnSide Youth Zones has helped build a state-of-the-art youth centre called ‘The Way’ in Wolverhampton.

OnSide is a charity with the aim of building a network of youth clubs across the UK, giving young people and those who are disadvantaged socially and economically, safe and inspiring places to go in their leisure time.

‘The Way’ in Wolverhampton provides a vital space for young people, to engage in sport, fitness, dance, arts, music, media, enterprise, well-being and self-improvement.

Kathryn Morley, Chief Executive of OnSide Youth Zones said: “Only weeks after opening, we are absolutely thrilled to bits with the way young people in Wolverhampton are taking full advantage of the offer. It looks like we will have 3,000 members by early next week.

“With over 1,300 visits per week we are already building strong relationships with young people and are able to give them the support they need.”

The Charity was the brainchild of Bill Holroyd, Chairman of the Bolton Lads and Girls Club, which was visited by over 3,000 young people each week. He realised other towns in the UK could benefit so he set up the OnSide Youth Zones and spearheaded the development across the country.

There are currently nine OnSide Youth Zones in the north of England and one in London, each providing quality, safe and affordable facilities for young people to engage in fun and productive activities geared towards improving their life chances, choices and opportunities.

Currently, the OnSide Youth Zone network boasts 15,000 members and aims to have opened 20 new centres by 2020. The Foundation has also committed £500,000 to help fund the build of a Youth Zone on the Wirral, North West. To read more about OnSide visit: www.onsideyouthzones.org

A Glasgow-based charity is to benefit from a grant of £375,000 from the St. James’s Place Foundation, spread over the next two to three years, towards the cost of a major development project.

The grant follows a funding application from The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Central Glasgow for support towards a major £21m relocation project to a purpose-built facility across the city.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the St. James’s Place Foundation, this is a considerable sum,” said Rhona Baillie, Chief Executive of The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

The current Hospice

“Work starts on the new hospice in June and we are focusing on fundraising the final £4m. This donation brings us one step closer to providing gold-standard palliative care in a 21st-century facility.”

The Foundation’s pledge will support the building of a Young People’s Lounge and Courtyard at a total cost of £750,000. The hospice cares for over 1,200 patients and families every year but has been steadily outgrowing its Carlton Place site on the banks of the River Clyde in the heart of Glasgow, leaving it with no further scope for development and expansion.

As a result, a decision was made to relocate to a new purpose-built

specialist palliative care unit in the grounds of Bellahouston Park. Building work will get underway later this year on the new facility, which will transform the ability of the current care team to deliver high quality clinical, emotional, social and spiritual care for patients and their families, at the same time extending vital support to younger people.

“The team at the hospice is offering an exceptional level of care and support in a facility that has become inappropriate for the requirements of patients and families they serve today,” said Mark Longbottom, Head of the St. James’s Place Foundation.

GOLF FUNDRAISING EVENT RECEIVES RECOGNITION

Partner Andrew Chatterton has been recognised with the coveted Stephen Sutton Award – to honour his fundraising efforts for the Foundation.

Andrew and his team at Franklyn Financial have raised an incredible £378,000 for the Foundation through their golf event over the last eight years.

Andrew and his team work tirelessly to stage ‘Summer Swing’ and to maximise fundraising from the event which also includes a black tie dinner in the evening and spa treatments during the day.

In his citation for the award at the O2 in January, Managing Director Ian Gascoigne said Andrew had utilised his skills as an entrepreneur and shown immense personal drive and commitment to create a unique event.

Andrew and the team at Franklyn Financial are not stopping there and this summer’s event will embrace a James Bond theme under the banner ‘Nobody Does It Better’, taking guests through the years of James Bond to create a day and night to remember.

“It was a great honour to receive this coveted award, we are enormously proud to have raised £378,000

over the last eight years for the Foundation. This feat

would not have been possible without the generosity of all of Franklyn Financial

Management’s clients, suppliers, colleagues and

staff members.”

Double award-winning Bailey Matthews has inspired all those who attended the 2016 Annual Company Meeting and Partner Dinner by challenging all of us to ‘Be More Bailey!’

This led to our community generously donating a total of £287,934, including company matching, on the night. This will help other young people like Bailey, who have cerebral palsy or a disability, reach their full potential irrespective of the challenges they face!

You may have seen Bailey on television last September picking up his Pride of Britain award and, in December the same year, he was presented with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award at a ceremony in Belfast.

On Thursday 14 April the inaugural London Children of Courage Awards took place at the Intercontinental London with over 450 guests in attendance. The Courage Awards were created in 2011 by Stephen Mitchell and the Leeds Foundation team, whose vision was to honour the deserving young people in Yorkshire whilst raising money for the Foundation. The event has proved a big hit, more than doubling in popularity in its five year history as well as raising funds for the Foundation.

THE LONDON CHILDREN OF COURAGE AWARDS 2016

The London Children of Courage Awards were organised by the Kingsway Location, namely Head of Business Ryan McDonald and Foundation Representative Richard Herbert, along with contributions from all of the London Locations. The successful evening was presented jointly by BBC Breakfast’s Business Journalist, Steph McGovern and former BBC Breakfast host Bill Turnbull who helped the Foundation to celebrate the lives of some very special and inspirational children and young people from across greater London.

A massive thank you to the nominating charities, including:

Those honoured included 12 year-old fundraiser PJ O’Donovan, who inspires family and friends to get involved, 4-year-old Ellie Pratt-White who suffered traumatic amputation, and inspirationally undertook a range of high wire and water activities; and 13-year-old Tommy Kent who received a bravery award for his confidence and determination whilst undergoing treatment for Leukaemia. While the event wasn’t a fundraiser specifically, it raised over £80,000 for the Foundation, including company matching.

“It’s all about the children, about those that don’t

normally get recognised in the community. It’s the most worthy thing I do every year

and it’s really good fun – and the kids are all gorgeous!”

BHUBESI PRIDE FOUNDATION

The Foundation has awarded a £16,000 grant, spread across three years, to support a project which will develop the first Bhubesi Pride Centre in Malawi working with disadvantaged children aged 8 to 14.

The Bhubesi Pride Foundation (BPF) is a UK registered rugby-for-good charity, operating in several African countries. BPF leads annual six-month expeditions through nine countries, uniting communities through sport, up-skilling local staff and initiating long-term legacy projects.

The BPF uses teams of volunteers to carry out annual rugby expeditions, using the sport as a tool for education and development in Africa. The BPF works with schools and communities in east and southern Africa, helping children unite through sport. It draws inspiration from the words of Nelson Mandela: “Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can.”

The aim of the BPF is to build its activities all year round, as its efforts have been shown to increase attendance at school, improve behaviour both in and

CASE STUDY

Through our relationship with Bhubesi Pride Foundation (BPF), we’re supporting a sustainable sports and education programme in Lilongwe’s rural district, Area 25.

Led by Malawian Wordsworth Rashid, the programme uses rugby to promote active lifestyles, teach life skills, reach learners with special educational needs and connect children to newly established rugby clubs, inspired by the charity’s five years of work. out of the classroom, create higher levels of attainment and foster a desire among the children to do positive things with their lives.

Each session usually attracts up to 500 children across multiple locations and demand is increasing. Through careful selection of partner schools and organisations, BPF ensures that it is reaching out to the most marginalised and disadvantaged children who need programmes like this. Since 2013, BPF has worked with an average of 3,200 children per year across 10 different countries and in the past year, 45% of participants were girls.

I CAN, the children’s communications charity, is to receive a donation of £98,127 from the Foundation, spread over three years, to contribute towards the salary of a Senior Paediatric Occupational Therapist at its Meath Primary School in Surrey.

The school is one of only a few in the UK that caters purely for primary-aged children with speech, language and communication needs, including Asperger’s Syndrome.

Children with these needs find it difficult to communicate with others as well as understand rules for social interaction and conversation, and I CAN’s Meath Primary School is a unique, nurturing, specialised learning community.

“We work to create a school community where children achieve excellent progress in their speaking, listening and understanding,” said Head of Centre Janet Dunn. “In this way, we can ensure that their

learning develops and confidence, independence and self-esteem grow.”

The school caters for up to 75 day and residential pupils aged 4 – 11, providing high quality education, therapy and care to help build confidence, independence and self-esteem so the children can become responsible and active participants at school, at home and in their communities.

TEENS UNITE FIGHT CANCER

St. James’s Place Foundation has been supporting Teens Unite Fighting Cancer for the last five years donating over £50,000 to assist their vital work helping young people with cancer.

Teens Unite Fighting Cancer is dedicated to improving the lives of

young people aged 13-24, with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. The charity runs regular days out such as concerts, football matches, art and beauty workshops. Teens Unite provides ongoing long-term support for teens, whether they are currently undergoing treatment or not. Teens Unite is unique

in providing the ongoing personal support that has been proven to have a major impact on treatment and recovery for this age group.

13 year old Tommy was supported by Teens Unite Fighting Cancer.

At just 13 years old, Tommy was diagnosed with Leukaemia. He had been complaining of an ear ache and neither Tommy nor his family were prepared for the heart-breaking events that followed. His GP noticed he was looking very pale and after a series of tests, he was diagnosed with blood cancer. After being transferred to UCL Hospital in London, he was told his plan of treatment. Tommy was also put

on steroids which affected his muscles. He struggled to walk up stairs or down the road without getting out of breath. He started losing his hair and his face became swollen from the steroids. Tommy has now completed his intense treatment but continues taking daily oral chemotherapy tablets. He has blood tests once a week and hospital visits every six weeks. Tommy’s mum has said that, despite Leukaemia destroying his confidence, it has not affected his determination or bravery.

HELPING THE FIGHT AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER

London-based Partner, Craig Lister, who has prostate cancer, recently spoke at a St. James’s Place meeting to share his story and educate other members of our community on the symptoms they should look out for and what action they should take if they have concerns about their health. Craig is also producing a video on the ‘early detection of prostate cancer’ which will be available to view (details on how you can access this will follow soon).

Inspired by Craig, the Trustees agreed a donation of £20,000 to the charity Prostate Cancer UK. Their mission is to help more men survive prostate cancer through research, providing information and awareness-raising.

Over 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the UK – that’s 130 men every day. Every hour, one man dies from prostate cancer – that’s more than 10,800 men every year. Over 330,000 men are living with and surviving after prostate cancer.
