ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your temple. Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving justice.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Response: I will praise you Lord, for you have rescued me.
To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens: my eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. R
Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of his mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he shows us his mercy. R
Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man’s disdain. R
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia, alleluia!
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he sent me to bring Good News to the poor.
Alleluia!
Parish Prayer
Lord God, may we, as St Augustine’s Parish, be a united and welcoming community recognising the need for Christ in our lives and serving the Christ in others. May we, as community, continue to face challenges together serving and supporting individuals and our families through our own personal efforts and our parish support groups. Guide us with your patient love. Fill us with your infinite Wisdom. Pour out your rich blessings upon us as we reach out to one another to fulfil our spiritual and pastoral needs as One in Christ, in community, and in faith, hope and love. AMEN.
Communion Antiphon
Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed the man who seeks refuge in him.

ST AUGUSTINE’S PARISH VISION STATEMENT St Augustine’s Parish is a community striving to be Christ to one another and to welcome and serve the Christ in those around us. We
seek ongoing spiritual formation as individuals, as families and as a community. We hope, through pastoral care, to strengthen, support and enrich one another and reach out to others in witness and evangelisation.

Thoughts from the Presbytery
FEASTS OF THE WEEK:
Sat: St Benedict
‘WHAT IS THIS WISDOM?’
Can you think of a time when someone returned home after a life-changing experience, full of enthusiasm, and the response of the locals was mixed: ‘Who do they think they are?’
Perhaps it was you who had changed in some way, experienced a conversion or a new outlook on life and suddenly you were surrounded by the people who know you deeply and who are struggling to accept your new found wisdom. Often when these experiences happen, our family and friends do us a favour. They keep our feet on the ground and bring us on a journey back to everyday life. Like Jesus, we
too can be amazed that this ‘wisdom’ is not shared by those around us. We should never crush the dreams or visions of others, but sometimes it is useful to keep one foot in reality while trying to achieve our dreams in small steps.
Today, it is also worth asking how we treat our modern day prophets? Prophets are controversial, they swim against the tide; they tell people things that they don’t want to hear; they
try to encourage change and transformation. They can be extremely unpopular. Can you think of one modern-day prophet who may be calling you to something different, to something greater, even if it is uncomfortable? We will always learn something, even if our viewpoint doesn’t change. We should challenge ourselves to listen, to grow. How often has Jesus come to us in the form of someone we know very well,
but we did not recognise him?

For thousands of years before the arrival of Western settlers in Australia, the sole inhabitants of the land were indigenous peoples, the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. Their ancient heritage forms an essential part of the cultural landscape of modern Australia. Today we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday with the theme – We all stand on Sacred Ground. Let us take the time to pray for a better understanding of our history and the deep wounds caused by our failure to listen, learn and respect the culture and spirituality of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters and brothers.
A report to donors and all interested parishioners on our work in Oecusse, Timor Leste, will take the form of a pot luck meal after Mass on the 25
th July in the Hartigan Centre. Mary Burt and
Genevieve Starr will speak of their recent visit and highlight the many projects Yass/Gunning Belun has on the ground in Timor Leste. Gunning parishioners will be given the same opportunity on the 30
th July, 6 for 6.30pm, at the Gunning Motel. Both occasions
are open to interested parishioners.
Just a reminder of the proposal in last week’s bulletin to lease many of our buildings, including the Lovat Chapel, to the Conservatorium in association with the University of Queensland. Those who object, please speak with a member of the PPC, Finance Committee or myself this week.
It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people
may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a
way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us
rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give
drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget
the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the
ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. (Misericordiae Vultus)
LAUDATO SI’ - A SUMMARY (cont.)
Each chapter addresses a particular topic using a specific method, but throughout the entire Encyclical, some principal concepts are
continually taken up and enriched:
the intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet,
the conviction that everything in the world is connected,
the critique of new paradigms and forms of power derived from technology,
the call to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress,
the value proper to each creature,
the human meaning of ecology,
the need for forthright and honest debate,
the serious responsibility of international and local policy,
the throwaway culture and the proposal of a new lifestyle (16).
The dialogue that Pope Francis proposes as a method for addressing and resolving the environmental problems is followed throughout the Encyclical. It refers to contributions by philosophers and theologians, not only Catholic but also Orthodox (the already cited Patriarch Bartholomew) and Protestant (the French thinker Paul Ricoeur) as well as the Islamic mystic Ali Al-Khawas. The same occurs in the key of that collegiality that Pope Francis has proposed to the Church since the beginning of his ministry: alongside the references to the teachings of his predecessors and of other Vatican documents (in particular of the Pontifical Council for Justice and
Peace), there are many taken from numerous Episcopal Conferences from all continents.

COMMUNION REFLECTION
14th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR B
What is this wisdom that has been given him?
We say that about someone we know well: Sure, he’s one of our own. One of our own: a sure way of saying we’re proud of him – but we won’t take him so seriously.
That’s what they were saying about Jesus in Nazareth. And others said the same: Can any good come out of Nazareth? Small-town boy with big-town dreams. How could he have any wisdom: Sure we know his sisters, his cousins.
And that’s where he got his wisdom, the wisdom each of us shares. Wisdom comes through ordinary people. We know we get some of our wisdom from our family. We pick up wisdom with the homemade scones out of the oven. That’s how it is. One of our own. Maybe you’ve given more wisdom than you thought.
The wisdom of Jesus is never too complicated. It’s things like: if you want to be happy, see what you can give to others. That’s how he saw happiness, and that’s the full wisdom of Jesus. He saw it at home – in Nazareth, and he saw it in heaven. Places of love. We live by the wisdom of love, rather than by other wisdoms – like the happiness that comes from straight As in exams, or from our job, money or physical appearance.
Real wisdom is to be in touch with love in your life, and if you’re in touch with love, you’re in touch with Jesus.
