MARKET OPPORTUNITY The potential market for fitness and well-being devices is over $2 billion per annum in 2010. Fitness enthusiasts have driven up sales of physical performance kits, such as pedometers and heart rate monitors, accounting for £15 million of the self-monitoring market. 5,714 public and private health and fitness clubs in the UK 7,160,000 gym members in the UK. In England, there are 2.9 million footballers, 1.46 million golfers, 874,000 tennis players and 900,000 badminton players. There were 3,449 running events in the UK in 2009. KEY ISSUES Barriers Time-consuming and often difficult nature of exercise. Consumers are prioritising spending time with loved ones ahead of exercising. Drivers The older audience will be one of the anchors for the new fitness movement in 2020. Young males aged between 16 and 24 are most likely to exercise regularly and use a device to monitor their performance. Members of the 16 to 24 age group are those most likely to compete with each other and compare performances using an online activity- monitoring service. It has been found that patients on Supervised Exercise Diet and Stress programs cost the healthcare provider $18,119 per year, as opposed to $47,647 for conventional care. FITNESS & EXERCISE Less than 1% of the £1.6 million spent each year on chronic heart disease goes towards prevention. Females are less likely to exercise and more inclined to diet. Males are more inclined to take part in competitive sports. 25% of those in the highest socio-economic groups exercise regularly, falling to 16% for the lowest grouping. An estimated 70% of young athletes drop out of sports by age 14. Less than 10% of consumers capture their fitness data digitally.
