Kaplan was represented by 2 teams, with Team 1 comprising Captain Tanrain Jiang Tian

Yun, David Saloria, Ayden Neoh and Alex Aw. Team 2 was represented by Lim Wei

Kang, Xue Zhong Nan and Yang Zhi Peng. Both teams started brightly with Team 1 put-

win over Team Sun Plaza Geeks in what proved to be a closely-watched match of the

tournament as the team had to play against an opposing team comprising of a 2-metre

tall opponent and a 3-point sharpshooter. The win set the stage for an all Kaplan semi-

Kaplan Team 1 manoeuvred a 17-11 win over Team 2 and proceeded to the finals. Team

Editorial: What we did on V’Day

Picnic under the Stars

For this Valentine’s Day, Jia Yuan from ACCA brought his girlfriend for a

picnic at the Botanical Gardens. The couple enjoyed a natural scenic set-

ting and was serenaded under a moon lit sky by romantic bands and had

their fill of picnic styled nosh. Admission was at $60, $80 or $100 with

menu choices. A very different experience.

Fine Dining Up & Away

Being the highest rooftop bar in Singapore, Stellar @ 1-Altitude is

the peak of multi-experience lifestyle joint in the world. One student

brought his Valentine date to Stellar @ 1 Altitude where the menu

differed from $160 to $190++, depending on your choice of a win-

dow or non-window seating. A very nice ambience for dining and

looking out into the starry night! His date loved it for sure!

Valentine’s Day Sunset Cruise

The most pricey on the list at $390

per couple but the couple got to take

a yacht out on a sunset dinner

cruise and saw fireworks later in the

night. Splurge worthy if you have the

budget!

CDS Editorial:

What Qualities are Organizations looking for in

Fresh Graduates?

Effective Communication Skills

There are no lack of qualified job seekers in the market, but from what a survey conducted by The Chronicle of High-er Education (Fischer, 2013) found out, fresh graduates too often lack the ability to communicate effectively.

During job interviews, telltale signs of a poor communicator are very apparent to an interviewer. Communication is not just about speaking eloquently. A candidate should demonstrate good listening skills, grasp the essence of a discussion quickly, provide relevant input and show positive non-verbal body language. No man is an island. We are required to work with others one way or another, hence the importance in relaying messages and sharing ideas across effectively and efficiently. Communication skills are highly prized no matter what industry you are interest-ed in joining.

Intellectual Humility

Most people understand the meaning of ‘intellectual’ and ‘humility’. However, when put together, it seems truly pro-found. Laszlo Bock, Senior Vice President of People Operations for Google, responsible for hiring for one of the world’s most successful companies, used the term ’intellectual humility’ (Friedman - How to get a job at Google, 2014) and explained that without intellectual humility, learning can never take place as true learning takes place during failures. Combining both intellect and humility to learn from failures shows a person’s strength of character. The attitude of a person is often desirable in this productivity-driven world. However, it takes even greater attitude from a person to apply that capacity productively. There’s an old good saying that ‘all the competencies in the world cannot compensate a lack of character’. Humility is a key to your success.

Learning Ability

Job candidates who are well prepared for interviews are often able to provide a good account of their skills and industry knowledge and apply them according to the required job scope. However, there is a need to go one step further to ascertain learning capabil-ities. Employers keep a keen lookout to ascertain what the poten-tial hire may know, but also, even more importantly, how fast they can learn. Bock added that ‘It’s the ability to process on the fly. It’s the ability to pull together disparate bits of information and assess it using structured behavioral interviews to validate it so as to make sure they’re predictive’. Job seekers must understand that in to-day’s working world, pace is a consistent element. The need is for new hires to be able to spontaneously pick up new skills and knowledge and apply them. There is also a need for today’s fresh graduates to hone themselves to be well-rounded, rather than staying mono-focused on academics alone.

Managing Job Interviews Workshop

The workshop ‘Managing Job Interviews’,

has been a mainstay in our CDS workshop

series and the many who have attended

had walked away confident of doing better

in their next interviews.

The last workshop was held in the evening

of 18 February 2014 and 22 students at-

tended the 3-hour workshop at the Wilkie

campus. Facilitated by Kaplan career coun-

selor, Mr Valiant Chiang, participants re-

ceived tips on the do’s and don’t’s when

being interviewed and what preparation is

really about. The unanimous highlight of the

workshop as agreed by participated was

the mock interview segment where stu-

dents were given the opportunity to spot the mistakes and see ‘real life interview’ scenarios. Participants also

learnt salary negotiation techniques and how to manage the ‘killer’ questions that may arise during an interview.

If you missed the workshop, join us for the next session on 7 May 2014. Registration on Campuslife website.

Entrepreneurship & Personal

Wealth Seminar

Entrepreneurship and Personal Wealth was a

free seminar conducted by DP Credit Bureau

held on 26 February 2014 at the Pomo cam-

pus. The speaker, April Ng of DP, shared

with aspiring entrepreneurs all about starting

up businesses in Singapore and why credit

management is important to a start-up busi-

ness. The participants also learnt about the

various financing options available, how

credit assessment works and why better

management of finance will impact business

operational success.
