TURKEY TRIPby Moulana M. Ravat

Visiting Turkey was once again breath taking. Istanbul is an incred-ibly rich city with its multi-cultural history, arts, and contemporary life. The Masaajid & its architecture are simply mind blowing. Istanbul and other sites in Turkey are fascinating in their own ways. The hospitality of the locals and friends, their warmth is just fascinating.Istanbul was not only buzzing with tourist but also the hub of an Inter-national symposium. A two-day World Islamic Conference was recently held in Istanbul, Turkey, to discuss the importance of two concepts in Islam, Ijtihad (Independent Reasoning) and Qiyas (Deductive Reasoning). The symposium, titled “Ijtihad and Qiyas: The Richness of Islam,” took place at the Istanbul Congress Centre, and was jointly organized by the Yeni Umit and Hira maga-

zines. Around 1,000 theologians, academics and opinion leaders from more than 100 countries gathered for the symposium, aimed at bring-ing unity in the Islamic community. I was thrilled and fortunate to be part of the South African delegation that were in attendance and I truly benefitted alot. Meeting great schol-ars and Mashaaikh is indeed a life time opportunity. The unity and understanding amongst the 100s of theologians is indeed admirable. . Amongst the highlights of our trip was once again visiting the Top Kapi Museum in which is kept, the sacred relics of Nabi Muhammed S.A.W and His Ashaab (Sahaba), also visiting the resting place of Hazrat Abu Ayyub Al Ansari R.A (Istanbul) and the tomb of Sheikh Jalaaluddeen Ar Rumi (RH) in Konya.

Pre-primary Speech contest

Foundation Phase Speech Contest

Our speech contest for our Grade 0 and Grade R classes were held in May. This brought about alot of excitement as the kids decided on a topic to speak about. The little ones really enjoyed this event, as a lot of attention was given to them. This event also helps to boost the learners self-confidence and language devel-opment.

Some parents comments:

“Initially I thought expectations were too high for the little ones, but I was pleasantly surprised.”

“It was refreshing to see how well-spoken and confident our kids are.”

Alhamdulillah, the Foundation phase held their first speech contest. Learn-ers were given topics to choose from and prepare for the competition. Parents were invited to attend the occasion, and were impressed at each individual’s unique ability, as they

expressed their laughter and Masha-Allah’s. Winners of each grade were selected and learners who participated each received certificates for participation. Well done to all our learners!

INARHOMEWORK SEMEducation is the best investment a parent makes for his child. Al-Azhar Institute hosted its first Homework seminar with an excellent turn out. The guest speaker for the night was Mr. Hoosen, a highly esteemed educator at the institute. The home-work seminar’s focus were on key issues such as the purpose of home-work, parent supervision regarding homework, time allocation for home-work, as well as the responsibility of parents regarding homework. It cleared up any misunderstandings as well as miscommunication regarding the subject and also encouraged parents to ask questions about anything they were unsure of. Home-work is not some activity to keep

learners occupied; it is set to foster the academic achievement of learners by extending school activities into home. It also provides developmental prac-tice, enrichment activities and self-discipline. It also helps with the consolidation of work done at school. The seminar encouraged parental involvement with regards to home-work but also made it clear that parents should not be doing the homework for their children. Parents helping their children with home-work also foster a better relationship between parents and their children. The homework seminar was a huge success and left parents with a lot to think about.

On the 17th May, we held our much anticipated Islamic Science Expo. Alhamdulillaah both learners and teachers were excited for the event. Attendance was wonderful. Grades 4 to 9 participated and were amazing, handling their projects extremely well, Masha-Allah.It is so important that we realise the importance of having this event, as it has a huge effect that benefits every-one and will always have an impact in our spiritual and academic lives. Topics covered included Geography,

History, Islam, Health and Psychol-ogy. A huge thanks and appreciation goes to all our learners, parents, staff and judges for your valuable input. May Allah reward you abundantly Aameen.A big Masha-Allah to all WIN-NERS…Lastly, Insha-Allah we hope that this event will prosper and go from strength to strength so that our Islamic Science Expo can become a national event.

The Senior and FET Phase

Pre-primary Islamia ArticleAlhamdulillah, it is only through the Rahma and Qudrat of Allah that our Pre-primary classes have truly excelled over the past 2 terms. They have memorized several different suwar of the Holy Qur’aan. They are able to perform 2 full raka’aats of Sqalaah along with the appropriate Du’aas and Tasbeehaat. They have learnt the basic day to day du’aas with its meanings which they shall apply in their lives Inshaa’Allah. They have been taught stories regarding 14 of our Ambiyaa (A.S) thus far.

Child educationalists assert that there is an inherent tendency in children to believe in the unity of Allah. Children are disposed towards purity and cleanliness and are averse to evil. Then if one attains good training, a

pure environment and righteous companions, one turns out to be strong in Imaan with excellent morals.

The deen of Islaam encourages us to ensure the correct upbringing of children. Islamic education is one of the best gifts any child could receive. Therefore, we at Nizamiye Al-Azhar Institute strive to impart to our children and excellent Islamic educa-tion.

We make du’aa that Allah continues to help and assist us in learning His Deen. May Allah SWT accept our efforts and continue to use us for the upliftment of His Deen.

Ameen Ya Rabbal Alameen.

This has been an extremely busy and exciting term at Nizamiye Al-Azhar what with our learners writing various Olympiads, participating in sports as well as the Islamic Science Expo. Our learners had the opportunity to attend the NMMU Open Day in May, the purpose of this visit being that our learners make informed career

decisions. There were exhibitions by all the faculties, providing information on all the academic programmes offered at the university. Mid-year exams have been written over a period of two weeks. Our duas are with all our learners, particularly our grade 12’s, who will be Nizamiye’s first matriculants, since 2007.

Nizamiye Al-Azhar Matric Farewell Dinner

FOUNDATION PHASEDuring the second term, the founda-tion phase educators ensured that our learners continued to grow in confi-dence, make progress and enjoy every aspect of their school day. This term we explored the core values of loyalty, solidarity and unity and how it influences our daily lives.

Our Grade ones were fascinated when doing an experiment in class to see what happens when you mix oil with water. They also constructed fabulous houses from recycled mate-rials. With on- going fun activities we aim to create an excitement and a love for learning in our learners.

Our Grade twos made beautiful book-marks and crocodile masks. The bookmarks are used to develop the skill of ‘following with the eyes’ when reading. Some of our learners are excelling in our reading programme. They are rewarded with the next badge when they complete reading ten books. Our learners are beaming with pride when wearing these badges. All learners are rewarded for

their efforts at their reading pace.

The Grade threes went to Bayworld to learn about life cycles. The highlight was the penguin and seal show. Learners watched in amazement how these sea creatures perform while being educated about littering and marine life. The Grade threes also did show and tell in our classrooms as part of our formal assessment tasks. Sajjaad Madatt in 3a showed us his creativity with his sweet, cuddly snowman. Learners also made fabu-lous ‘pasta’ insects this term.

Our Foundation Phase soccer boys must be commended for their dedica-tion towards soccer training. Our under 9/10 boys performed very well in inter-school fixtures. Well Done! May we continue the third term with a tidy uniform, beautiful manners, punctuality and organised routines for homework. Wishing all our learn-ers and parents a blessed Ramadaan and Eid Mubarak.

Nizamiye Al-azhar was proud to host our first Matric Farewell Dinner on the 10th May 2014; at Sea Otters Lodge in Kinny Bay.

There was a lot of excitement building up to this night. The Grade 12 learn-ers had a special section on their homework board, counting down the days to the big event.

It was the night of the Matric Dinner, teachers and waiters (the grade 11 learners) patiently await the grand arrival of our matriculants. BMW, Mercedes Benz and Porsche are some of the cars which turned heads that night and ignited screams from the crowd.

There they were, stunning young ladies in their ball gowns and hijab, looking as beautiful as ever and our dashing young men in their suits.

Our Matric class of 2014 entered into a Winter Wonderland with white drap-ing, blue velvet tablecloths, soft blue lighting and mystical forest centrepieces on which an array of candles hung.

Each learner had the opportunity to make a speech. It was a memorable moment as all their words came from the heart. They referred to each other as "family" numerous times and made reference to all those who have helped them over the years to achieve their goals.

After the principals address, dinner was served by our grade 11 waiters who were certainly on the ball that night. Learners and teachers were then left to explore the venue with the sound of waves crashing in the back-ground.

As NIZAMIYE AL-AZHAR School, we are organizing a science fair and and internal science expo, where students have a chance to showcase their proj-ects about their own scientific investigations. At this Expo and science fair, students can display and discuss their work with judges, teachers and students from our school, with parents and with other inter-ested people.By participating, most of the

students will increase their aware-ness of the wonders of science, add to their knowledge and broaden their scientific horizons. When we have completed our internal science fair we select some projects to compete at provincial science competion which is sponsored by ESKOM.ESKOM`s mission is to develop young scientists who are able to identify a problem, analyze infor-mation, find solutions and com-municate findings effectively.

Another FIRST for Nizamiye Al-Azhar! This year is the first year that Al Azhar will be partici-pating in the Afrikaans Olympiad under the auspices of the ATKV (Afrikaanse Kultuur Vereniging). Since our students take Afrikaans as a First Additional Language, the Olympiads were for First Additional Students. 50 students

from Gr 10 - 12 were enrolled to write the exam on the 20th of May 2014 but only 49 completed the gruelling 3 hour paper. We are still waiting for the results how-ever, I am hoping they did excep-tionally well since there are prizes to be won by the students with the best results in the province, as well as in the country.

As-Salaamu Alaikum, Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you few qoutes about fasting :

Enduring hunger and thirst is not fasting. Fasting is refraining from obscene talk, bad contacts, the yoke of carnal desire, and evil actions.(Prophet Muhammad ,PBUH)

There are seven things in which there is no goodness: performing prayers with-out reverence, fasting without refraining

from unnecessary things, reciting the Qur’an fast and carelessly, worship that does not prevent sins, prosperity that does not lead to generosity, friendship without sincerity, and supplication with-out cordiality. (Ali ibn Abu Talib)

If I fast for life, spend the nights in wor-ship without any sleep, give away all my possessions in the cause of God, but do not have any affection for those who submit to God and hate those who rebel against God, I will find no goodness in any of my acts of worship. (Abdullah ibn‘Umar)

If worship were a bird, certainly fasting and daily prayerswould be its wings. (Yahya ibn Mu‘adh)

One of the manners of fasting is to stay awake during the day in order to feel hunger, thirst, and feebleness. (Imam Ghazali) Fasting in the month of Ramadan deals a blow directly against the arrogance of the carnal soul and smashes it.It makes the desperation, weakness, and destitution of humanity visible. It makes them remember that they are the servant. (Bediüzzaman Said Nursi)

People who do not fast are suppressed by the weight oftheir body and they never attain a com-plete spiritualmaturity. (M. Fethullah Gülen)

May Almighty Allah Accept our ibabat in this blessed month of Ramadan , andmay you and your family enjoy the Auspi-cious day of Eid - ul fitr Insha-AllahWas SalaamMehmet N Kaya

Mehmet N Kaya, Principal

The most perfect fasting is that which makes all senses and faculties, such as the eyes, ears, heart, imagination, and intellect fast as the stomach does. That is, human beings must also refrain from prohibited deeds and useless things that do not concern them and which lead each of their organs in its own special way of worshipping.
