I am very grateful to say that this year we have ten qualified instructors within our Club. Naturally some are more experienced than others, have different passions than others, however all are unpaid and bring their individual knowledge and expertise to our Pony Club. I myself completed my Preliminary Coaching accreditation last year and am looking forward to a great year ahead. Last but not least, I would like to welcome all our members and their families, whether young or ‘old’, fresh or stale, agile or not, to our Pony Club, and ask that you please don’t hesitate to talk to me with any suggestions, concerns, or just to say hello!

Word from the president

This year we are extremely lucky to have on board a large number of instructorsto help out at our musters. A big congratulations to Karyn Davey, Ash Andrews and Johanna Lister-Smith who completed their PCAQ Level C and NCAS Level One Instructors Accreditations. Also a big congratulations to Renee Crang, Simon Kinchington and Cameron Magick for completing their NCAS Preliminary Coaching Accreditations.

Instructors devote much of their time and effort in helping our children to get themost out of their riding and take better care of their ponies. Instructors are not only unpaid, but most also expend their own time and money attending courses to further their knowledge.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m sure you soon will!

My name is Cameron and together with my wife, Cathy, and four children, I have been involved with Pomona Pony Club for just over ten years, both as a member and also holding positions within the committee. Prior to this time, Cathy was an active member of Pomona Pony Club in the 80’s (together with her family) and she has watched this Club grow, have its ups and downs, and become the strong Club that it is today.

This year I have two of my four children riding at Pony Club. Carlee, who is ten, and Cassidy, who is three. Although he currently doesn’t ride, you will often also see my son, Cyle hanging about, and occasionally lending a helping hand. This will be Cassidy’s first year at Pony Club and I honestly thought that we were over running beside our child’s pony, but it looks like we will be at it again, (and probably again with our fourth child, Crystal, who is yet to ride). If I’m not at Pony Club, you may see me around with a hammer and nail as I am a Builder by trade. Between four children, pony club and tennis, I’m not entirely sure what I do with my time!

On a serious note, I believe Pony Club is, amongst other things, to encourage young people to learn to ride and enjoy all things connected with horses. It is a place to provide instruction in riding and horsemanship and to teach our members the proper care of their companions, (their horses). I am a great believer in providing a fun and safe environment for our children, which, in turn, hopefully allows them to achieve their goals.

I’m not here to preach, however I would greatly appreciate each and every one of us to familiarise ourselves with our Club Code of Conduct. This can be found on our website www.pomonapc.webs.com, and informs us of some important information, including some do’s and don’ts which will hopefully allow our Club to run smoothly, with a friendly atmosphere.

Meet the Team.

pete Dumont. Chief Instructor.Pete has been a member of Pomona Pony Club for 16 years; he has been chief instructor for approx 7 of those years in 2008 he was made a life member for his contribution to the club.

Pete was 5 when he started riding, and was taught from a young age that riding horses was equally as important as his schooling.

Pete in his early teens rode at gymkhanas & shows in England & Ireland. He got his B.H.S.A.I (British Horse Society Assistant Instructor) in 1963. he then went on to ride in shows in Canada, USA & Mexico for various owners. Pete also taught English equitation while he was there.

Jimmy is Pete’s favourite steed – he is a 17year old warm blood who still thinks he is a 2year. He is an all round horse, ride & drive (he was broken into harness when Pete first started him).

Pete likes ODE (one day events), as there are 3 disciplines he also enjoys hunter trials & showjumping. He teaches all ages and all disciplines.

Beau Hartshorn. Vice presidentBeau has been a member of Pomona Pony Club for 5 years; he has been vice president or president for 4 of those years. Beau started riding 6 years ago although doesn’t get to ride as much as he’d like.

Beau enjoys his current role as vice president. He likes making the kids laugh (in the past demonstrating activities as the horse and rider in one) as he feels fun is apart of Pony Club.

With 2 children at Pomona Pony Club and living locally he sees Pomona Pony Club as a club that will be apart of his weekend activities for years to come.

Jenna rathgeber. Instructor.I started competing when I was 3 years old, so the passion was there from a young age.I took a 3 year break from horses while completing my degree in Graphic Design in Melbourne. It wasn’t long until horses squeezed their way back into my life. I had an amazing opportunity to work with Brian McMahon (known as a horse whisperer from Coolum) for 3 years. Training, breaking and problem solving was my daily work.

I enjoy teaching Natural Horsemanship. Getting the rider to understand their horse, listen and feel. Ground work is a fundamental stage that I believe everyone should understand and put into action. I have successfully shown for many years in the hack ring, dressage, one day events and showjumping. Recently I have had a change of love. I have moved into the Western field to test out the waters in this amazing discipline. I am a very strong believer in dressage: games, showjumping, eventing, trail... they are all dressage with obstacles in between.

In 2011 I complete Level C instructors Course and NCAS Level 1. This year I look forward to completing Level B.

I run my Horse Training and Riding school, Equine Intelligence, in Coondoo where my partner Simon and I bought last year.

Whoever said diamonds are a girls best friend clearly did not own a horse.

John Kerwin. Instructor. My instructor’s certificates are --P.C.A.Q. level ‘C’ and N.C.A.S. level ‘1’I have been involved with pony club since 1988.

There have been years with pony club and years without. But somehow I find myself back into it again, which this time, restarted about 6 years ago at Laidley P.C., until the present day.

Probably the reason for ‘back into it again’. is seeing the happy, smiling faces of both children and adults, having fun with with their precious horses, in a safe environment.

As an instructor, I like to give riders as much variety as I can, to make a more complete horseperson.

My main areas of expertise are dressage, jumping, sporting and a number of mounted games.

Johanna Lister-Smith. Instructor. I have been a member of Pomona Pony Club since 1998. In this time I have learnt not only how to ride and care for horses but I have become more confident as an individual. At 10 years of age I competed at my first gymkhana, and I was hooked. Since then I have competed in dressage, show jumping, hunter trials and one day events. Whether my horse and I are competing or trail riding I am extremely proud of what we have achieved - my proudest achievement was in 2008 when I competed in the Zone 6 one day event championships and out of a very large group, my horse and I went home champions. I have recently become a PCAQ Level C and NCAS Level 1 Instructor so as I can forward my knowledge and experiences onto the younger members and watch them develop their skills. Pomona Pony Club has been a big part of my life and will be for many more years, because the best way to learn is to have fun while doing it.

Keith Humphreys. Instructor.I have had a passion for horses since day one. When I was roughly eight years of age and lived on a cane farm with my family, I was told by my father that we were selling the farm and my horse would have to go. Although still there in heart, it took some time before I was able to get back into horses.

During my mid twenties I took up endurance riding for roughly ten to fifteen years. I then gave up my horses to concentrate on my work commitments. It was after this that I decided I would like to learn as much as I could by attending clinics.

I am today involved with SCATER as I have been for the past eighteen years. During this time I have been made a life member not to mention that I am also a foundation member.

I have been a member of Pomona Pony Club for four or more years. During this time I have become a Level C, and NCAS Level 1 Instructor.

I like anything to do with horses. My passion is the physical and mental connection between the horse and rider. I will be the first to admit that a few years ago a horse, yes a horse, made me stop, think and realise that the mental connection of understanding your horse is the key to a successful horse and rider partnership.

Today, I prefer to participate in team penning and possibly a bit of reigning. I run clinics of my own, break and train horses, and also give private lessons.

I enjoy dedicating my spare time to Pomona Pony Club with the inspiration of passing my knowledge on to those who wish to participate.

When people say its just a horse

they don’t understand...

Shelley Kinchington. Treasurer. We joined Pomona Pony Club in July 2010. We have two daughters riding, Ariel 11 and Celeste 4, Simon my husband also rides when he gets a chance. Simon recently attained a Preliminary Coaching Certificate for instructing at Pony Club (proud Wife moment!).

Since 2011 I’ve held the position of Treasurer at Pomona Pony Club, a role I totally enjoy. It takes up a fair bit of time, basically unseen by Members. My role involves doing all data entry of monies in and out of the Club, bank reconciliations, and fortnightly visits to the ANZ bank. This normally takes up to 8 to 12 hours minimum a month. I also regularly help out in the canteen. The role of Treasurer allows me to help the Club, as I’m not a “horsey person” (OK let’s be honest, I find them big and scary, but have two kids that adore them).

I’m also a working Mum, I’m a software consultant who provides support and training for accounting, payroll and job costing software to SMEs

We are so lucky to be part of such a wonderful Club! Everyone is so friendly and helpful, especially to me who is very “equine illiterate”.

Karyn Davey. Secretary. Hi, I’m Karyn Davey, my husband Brad or better known as Red, 2 daughters Rhiley 12 and Gaby 8 and I have been members of Pomona Pony Club since 2007.

I started riding at The Gap Pony Club in Brisbane at the age of 8 years and from then til my early 20s competed in many equine disciplines including gymkhanas, hacking, show jumping and dressage. In 1997 I completed my EFA Horse Management Cert with Jackie Reed on the Gold Coast, last year my Level C Pony Club instructor Cert and last weekend my Level 1 NCAS.

In between family life and my girls competing on their ponies I love to trail ride and get my horse out and about as much as possible. Last year I was roped in…. lol …. to take over the secretary position from Kerry Hartshorn who did a fantastic job and I am now in the full swing of things with a very helpful committee, between memberships, paperwork, nominations, and emails it does keep me on my toes. It’s great to see our club growing and to see the smiles on all the kids and big kids faces at musters and competitions, looking forward to a fantastic 2013 at Pomona Pony Club.

Simon Kinchington. Vice president.I have been involved with the club since mid 2010 when our eldest daughter Ariel started pony club riding. I am a riding member myself and occasionally get to ride my horse when Ariel isn’t or when I’m not leading our second daughter Celeste on her pony.

I enjoy the Vice President role – it allows me to learn a lot about our club and the whole pony club set up more broadly.

When I’m not doing horsey things I get paid to play around with airports and aeroplanes. Current challenges include teeing up all of the approvals required to build a new main runway at Sunshine Coast Airport and completing a master plan for Caloundra Aerodrome.

Ash Andrews. Instructor. Started pc when i was 10, attended numerous gymkhanas, odes, hunter trials etc, broke in my horse at age 11 whom i still ride and compete on.

Through training all my own horses from a young age it gives me great accomplishment to walk away with winners at the end of the day, to help others learn and see them accomplish there dreams brings happiness knowing i have helped them get there is a great achievement not only for me but also for the rider aswell!

renee Crang. Chief Canteen operater. This years canteen is focusing on fresher healthier food instead of the greasy BBQ. There will also be sweet treats every muster and these will change all the time, a lot of the prep for canteen will be done out of muster hours so that I can be a riding member of Pomona Pony Club and enjoy watching the children.

Behind the scenes of the canteen is a lot of work, with shopping, prep and planning a new range of foods that are cost effective, exciting and quick and easy, trying to please everyone seems to be the most difficult part of canteen.

This year Amanda will also be a permanent fixture in the canteen with many hands making light work, we will aim to be bright and early at each muster, and have all the rolls etc ready to go and in the fridge by the time we saddle up volunteers are always welcome.

At the conclusion of each year, Pomona Pony Club

presents trophies, in conjunction with the Les & Rita

Andreassen Perpetual Shield, to the persons who

accumulate the highest number of points from

Gymkhana placings throughout the year. This shield

was donated to our Club some years ago, by the

Andreassen family, one of the founding families of

our Club, in memory of his deceased wife and their

deceased mother.

As this usually creates a lot of confusion at the end of

the year, for those of you who wish to participate in this

award, we are asking that as you attend and compete

at a Gymkhana, that you tally your points from ribbons

won, and send them into both Karyn, bradnkaren@

bigpond.com, and Cathy, [email protected],

so that a running total can be kept.

For those of you who don’t know, most Clubs calculate

their points as follows; first place, five points; second

place, four points; third place, three points; fourth

place, two points; fifth place, one point. Just to

confuse us a little bit more, some Clubs use the State

Points System, which is as follows; first place, ten points;

second place, nine points; third place, eight points;

fourth place, seven points; fifth place, six points; sixth

place, five points; seventh place, four points; eighth

place, three points; ninth place, two points; tenth

place, one point. It is up to each individual to keep

track of his / her points - The point system used is usually

stated on the event program, if not, please ask.

Please remember, this is for Gymkhanas only and any

other competitions that you may attend do not count

towards this Shield.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Also going on my first trail ride with Jenna because I had never been on my horse out in the wild. First day at Pony Club was great. Also my first jump over a barrel. The jump looked high and I didn’t think I would make it and it was exciting when I got over because it was my first time and I was worried that Clancy wouldn’t make the jump. But she made it and I was so happy that I did it. Jumping feels like flying, like drifting through the air. Being in the air with the wind is awesome. When I land I feel like my tummy has gone upside down.
