SEA, AIR & SPACE

MUSEUM

When many people think of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum --- the storied World War II Navy ship docked on the Hudson River in Manhattan --- they immediately think of war and guns. But the Intrepid is a whole lot more. In fact, it is an unbelievably fantastic treat of afternoon, fun, history and education for the whole family all rolled into one. “The institution as a whole is not about guns and war,” explains Susan Marenoff, Executive Director of the Museum. “This institution is about

heroism. We are about honoring our heroes, educating the public and inspiring our youth,” she adds.

In celebrating and honoring heroism, the Intrepid showcases a spectacular array of exciting exhibits that will keep your entire family engaged and satisfied all day. “There’s just a lot of fun and educational learning,” says Ms. Marenoff. “There’s no doubt that you could spend an entire day or an entire afternoon here and still not see everything. And it doesn’t even matter what the weather is. We have so much on the inside that even if there’s inclement weather you can still spend a great deal of time inside.”

Ms. Marenoff cites the Museum’s Exploreum and its extensive collection of interactive activities as one of the museum’s most awe-inspiring and popular attractions with children. “We have twenty-first century technology ingrained in all of our exhibits now,” stresses Ms. Marenoff.

Looking at the museum’s interactive activities, when visiting the museum, children get a chance sit in the cockpit of a plane or a capsule. They even get to use three different types of flight simulators including one that lets them attempt to land a plane on an aircraft carrier.

A very special treat for kids --- and anyone who has sense of adventure ---is the Growler, a World War II submarine that allows visitors to get an up close look at what it was like to actually live aboard one of the Navy’s most heralded operations.

“People come out of the Growler and are just blown away,” says Ms. Marenoff. It’s the only submarine of its kind in the world that you can actually go on.

Another big treat for visitors of all ages at the Intrepid is the ship’s flight deck, which showcases some 30 restored aircraft including two of the fastest

aircraft in the world: the super-secret A-12 Blackbird spy plane and the Anglo-French luxury airliner Concorde. The Concorde is one of only two in North America, according to Ms. Marenoff, “The Concorde tells a great story; it tells us a lot about Transatlantic travel and flight,” making it a rare opportunity for families.

Not only an incredible place to see aircraft, the flight deck also offers one of New York City’s most spectacular views. “There aren’t many places in the city where you can see the Empire State building, the Statue of Liberty and the George Washington bridge all at once,” adds Luke Sakes, Public Relations Manager at the museum.

In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum also offers special exhibits and events

throughout the year along with programming

for children on school holidays, making it a fun

and enjoyable place to visit not just once, but a few times a year.

This

USS INTREPID

December during the school holiday break, for example, the Intrepid will

present Snoopy The World War I Flying Ace. Ms. Marenoff points out that Charles Schulz, the creator of

the Peanuts comic strip, served in World War II and was inspired to create a hero in tribute to those who served the country. “This exhibit

will have something for the youth who know the cartoon as well as those in the sociopolitical, intellectual market who really appreciate Snoopy and understand what it stands

for,” she says.

Moving into 2010, in January the museum will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with its Dreams Come True exhibit, which will center on creating your own inventions. And the February winter school break will bring Midwinter Recess --- Mars Rover Lands at the Intrepid. Here kids will be able to build their very own robots and see what it takes to be a part of the NASA team. These special holiday events promise to be a cool and thrilling time for all.

So whether you and your kids are history and science buffs, adventurers, or just plain fun-lovers, the Intrepid has something for everyone. It’s a must-see for the Cool Culture family and anyone who just loves some good, clean, cool family time.
