THE UTILITY OF ENEMA

Although ‘enema’ is an english word, it is fast becoming popular in the Hindi vocabulary too. Yoga and Ayurveda term it as ‘basti kriya’, or ‘doosh’, as other experts call it. Taking enema is simply the insertion of a thin tube into the anus to draw out toxic waste matter from the large intestine using water, edible oil, dilute curd and so on. The cause of all diseases lies in the waste matter that collects within the intestines. Performing regular enema is a sure-shot way of getting rid of that waste as the body gradually gets purified and disease-causing symptoms fade or completely disappear. In fact, one should keep an enema set handy at home for use as and

when required.

Myths about enema

At the mention of the word ‘enema’, most people cringe and mistake it to be the one given in hospitals, the one that inserts chemical-based soap liquid in the intestine to clean it. The truth is that it is a very harmful practice because when we cannot tolerate soap residue on our skin, how can we allow its entry into our internal organs? The harsh caustic content of soap tends to shock the inner intestinal membrane so this kind of hospital-variety enema should be avoided at all costs.

The kind of enema we are talking about is the one that uses edible liquids that can be used through an enema

set in the comfort of home. These liquids are soft in texture and neither excite nor hurt the intestine, on the contrary, they gently cleanse it. The process is as safe as rinsing one’s mouth with water in the morning. However, there are less knowledgeable or misinformed people who spread fear of enema in the minds of people, sometimes even blaming it for their ill-health. This is obviously far from truth.

Enema as a family doctor

Investing about Rs. 100 in an enema set can be compared to bringing an ever-ready doctor home. Whenever anyone feels unwell in the family, enema should be taken immediately for relief and often, for full cure.

As a result of enema, all the intestinal waste matter that would have otherwise rotted lying inside, slowly making the blood increasingly acidic, gets an easy outlet. Therefore, taking enema is highly recommended especially when a person is in the initial stages of sickness.

To emphasize the usefulness of taking enema, let us consider the example of American doctors who researched intestines of dead patients. Of the total 284 bodies examined, 256 had solid waste stuck in layers in their intestines. Some even had worms that had made holes in the intestinal lining. Due to the accumulation of excessive waste matter, intestines of few patients had become double in size. Sharp knives had to be used to forcefully cut them open for

examination. Most of these patients had daily bowel movement but still retained so much toxic matter that finally led to their premature death due to one disease or another. Had they kept their intestines in shape in a more rigorous way, they could have made their lives longer and healthier.

Types of enema

Pot enema: This enema set contains a pot with a tap on one end. It has to be hung at a height of about three feet from the ground and filled with liquid in the quantity required. A catheter is attached to the tap and is inserted in the anus during taking enema. When the person is not able to hold the liquid inside any longer, the catheter is gently removed and the concerned person can defecate.

Pump enema: This enema is to be taken while in the toilet. The set has a pipe and a pump. The pipe has a non-returning valve on one end and a nozzle on the other. One has to dip the valve in about 250gm water and pump it till the nozzle starts spilling water. A catheter is attached tothe nozzle and inserted in the anus. After a few minutes, the person can defecate. This process can be repeated again in case the need is felt.

Both enema sets benefit equally. Pump enema can be utilized while travelling while pot enema can be used at home by hanging it at a convenient place for all family members to use. Each can use their own catheter while taking enema in the latter case. Also, for patients who may find pumping action

TAP SEVA SUMIRAN January - February 2017

6

difficult, they can easily

use pot enema.

Important points regarding enema

· One can use enema whenever the need is felt. In fact, if a person is not able to defecate twice on his own, then enema should be taken.

· Enema is of particular importance during fasting, especially when it is being done on juice or water.

· Even a child of five-six months can be administered enema in case of indigestion, gas or constipation.

· Children who do not defecate normally in the morning should be given enema regularly for some days to regularize their bowel movement.

· Those with chronic constipation can pump some water in their intestine at night before sleeping. This would

help bowel movement in the morning.

· Those with indigestion, acidity, constipation, gas, headache etc. can use enema for relief.

Precautions:

· The pot should not be more than three feet in height while using pot enema.

· There should be no air in the pipe before using enema.

· One should use plain water while administering enema unless otherwise advised by an expert.

· In case a person has the problem of blood in stool, he should oil the catheter before insertion.

· Enema should not be used during pregnancy.

· In winters, taking warm water enema is good.

One should not force out water during defecation.

· It is not important

that all the water comes out after taking enema. This can be attributed to dryness of intestines. The water that stays inside would soften the hard stool so should be allowed to stay there.

Important note: Taking regular enema will not prevent diseases by itself. As prescribed by Manas Yog Sadhna, a supportive dietary system must be incorporated in one’s lifestyle so that food does not rot in the intestines and can be easily processed and passed out. In this regard, one should not eat anything till noon, followed by consuming raw fruits and salads in the afternoon and one cooked meal at night. This diet along with regular use of enema will purify the intestines and reduce or fully eliminate chances of falling sick.

ABUNDANT HAPPINESSCHAR VED CHHEH SHASTRA MAIN BAAT LIKHI HAI DOI.

SUKH DINHE SUKH HOT HAI, DUKH DINHE DUKH HOI.

(Our Holy Scriptures say mainly two things: if you give away happiness, you get back happiness, and if you give away unhappiness, you will surely

become unhappy in return.)

Everybody wants to be

happy, that too, all the

time. No one wants his

joy or pleasure to ever

end. But man craves for

eternal happiness at the

wrong place i.e. in the

external world. He runs

after sensual pleasures

and does not try to

understand that he is

caught up in an endless

pursuit. Deep, eternal

happiness lies within; it

is an internal journey.

For instance, any person

ordinarily thinks that

food would give him

energy, medicines would

make him healthy, and

money and familial

relationships would

satisfy his atma (soul).

But how many deeply

satisfied people do we

regularly meet, hardly

any! On the contrary,

we often see people

complaining about the

things they do not have,

keenly narrating their

long list of worries and

tensions. The problem

is that they are blindly

chasing fulfilling their

deep-rooted desires

and cravings. When

one desire is fulfilled,

the associated sense

of happiness felt is

momentary, lasting only

for a brief while. That

fulfilled desire is soon

replaced by another

desire, a new craving. Let

us explore this process

of substitution of one

desire by another in

this mindless pursuit of

happiness.

The appropriate question

to ask in this regard

is that is there a link

between true and long-

lasting happiness and

an object of desire? If

there was a genuine link

between them, then the

concerned person would

be happy all his life

since he would continue

possessing that object.

Or, anyone else having

the same object would

be equally happy as

the person in question.

TAP SEVA SUMIRAN January - February 2017

8

But that is hardly the

case! People are leading

jam-packed lives, while

spiritually, they are living

at a superficial level,

where no one stops to

think about the source of

eternal happiness, which

is abundantly available

within.

How to access this

eternal happiness from

within? As prescribed

in Sri Ramcharitmanas,

a person following the

principles of Tap-Seva-

Sumiran is bound to

feel deeply happy in a

sustained way. The way

to permanent happiness

is no secret as has been

clearly explained in

Manas. To deal with

‘attachment to desires’

- a key cause of misery

- the principle of seva

or distribution has been

prescribed. A person

should introspect and

see to it that whatever

he craves for should

be distributed first and

gradually his attachment

towards that object of

pleasure would fade.

A person who grows

in performing seva

gradually becomes

so strong-willed that

whether or not he

receives the desired

object, he stays balanced

and calm.

Performing seva is

an art that has to be

increasingly practiced,

to be learnt and

understood. What is of

core value is the bhava

(intention) with which it

is being done. Whether

distribution is being

done out of pity or to

boost one’s own ego has

to be repeatedly checked

as one tends to falsely

believe himself to be the

‘giver’ when God is the

only giver. Secondly, a

person must cultivate

a habit of sharing with

others at least one-tenth

of his income as God’s

share along with a part

from all other material

possessions. This sharing

has been mentioned in

all our Holy Scriptures by

different names. Manas

calls it the setting aside

of dashansh or simply

‘dashansh seva’. The

principle is to give away

more if you have more

and less if you have less.

Practicing detachment

from worldly possessions

goes a long way in

eradicating cravings at

the root level, of course,

over time.

Thirdly, an important

aspect of offering seva

is remembering to

prioritize God whenever

a person is about to

spend on himself or

consume a worldly

pleasure. That is to say

that when a person gets

getting established

in detachment and

becoming serene

and happy over time.

One does not stay

permanently satisfied or

happy by continuously

fulfilling a never-ending

list of desires which

are located in an ever-

changing external

and superficial world.

The key to eternal

and abundant joy

comes from practicing

detachment from things

that we generally crave

for from within. Only

in doing that will the

Sachidanand qualities of

God i.e. abundant health,

bliss, wisdom and love

gradually arise through

our atma.

his salary, for instance,

he should immediately

put aside God’s share.

This converts the rest of

the money into prasadam

(i.e. blessed). This way,

not only does a person

benefit more from the

money he is earning, he

also gradually gets more

and more detached from

it, making him so light

and peaceful in return.

Anyone offering this

kind of seva should

also understand deeply

why is he doing it. If we

look around, mother

nature has given all of us

everything we need, and

in abundance, without

expecting anything in

return. We get fresh

air, sunshine and rain,

everything for free.

Therefore, we are duty-

bound to give away too to

stay in perfect alignment

with the laws of nature.

Our scriptures also

talk of ten Gods sitting

at the entrance of the

doors of our ten senses,

guarding them. If we

behave selfishly and fail

in performing service

towards them by taking

out dashansh from our

income and a part from

material objects we own,

then the gods would not

protect our senses from

becoming impure either,

finally leading to a lot

of misery in the form of

sickness, failures in life

and so on.

Therefore, sharing from

food and income is

In today’s competitive age, very few people realize the value of rest. In fact, most of their time is spent doing various work-related activities all through the day and even night. Unfortunately, what people do not realize is that this kind of activity-packed, fast-paced lifestyle eventually leads them to a doctor’s clinic, where they readily spend time and money instead of simply taking regular rest.

If one looks around at the wonder of nature, all animals fall asleep whenever they feel the need to. They don’t have to be told to take-a-break or to fall in line with nature. It is the opposite case with human beings, who often get carried away with worldly chores and responsibilities, so much so that they often end up falling sick. To make matters worse, many people resort to stimulants like tea,

coffee or tobacco to artificially increase their work related time-span. This really harms the body in the long run. On the face of it, it seems the body got energized due to intake of stimulants but in reality, the body is slowly being robbed of its preciously acquired nutrition to digest these harmful drinks.

Traditionally, people used to rest from sunset to sunrise and it is not surprising why they lived such long, disease-

REST WELL FOR VIBRANT HEALTH

11

free lives. For instance, diseases like diabetes, hypertension and high blood pressure were unheard of back then. These days, however, youngsters have resorted to working night-shifts if the job pays reasonably well. As a result of this modern, money-based lifestyle the body suffers most due to constant neglect. People don’t slow down to take rest and sufficiently charge their bodies, therefore end up visiting doctors for quick-fix, short-term treatments.

An interesting question then arises as to what happens to the human body in sleep. Medical science claims that sleep is merely a restful state of the body whereas we at IASS believe that during sleep, the body gets charged in accordance with principles of Sri

Ramcharitmanas. The reason for this belief is that during sleep, the sense of ‘I’ and ‘mine’ gets suspended and the person comes in direct contact with the atma (soul) for a few hours. It is during this time that the body gets charged and the person wakes up feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

To explain this process of recharging-in-sleep further, let us take the example of a machine that has been put to rest. What we notice is that its power (or energy level) becomes zero afterwards. Reverse is the case with the human body. When the human body is resting, the body’s energy level gets raised! This is possible only because the body comes in touch with the source of energy or the atma when it is in sleeping mode.

There is an important principle that one must understand vis-à-vis rest and work. Work comes first in order, then food-intake and lastly, rest. If this principle is constantly followed, one would start seeing its benefits. However, if a person feels lethargic and tired all through the day, it means his body is quite impure. To deal with these impurities, Manas Yog Sadhna prescribes the following diet regime. If one stops taking breakfast altogether and starts taking raw food during the day, followed by one full, cooked meal at night, his impurities would start getting eliminated gradually. As his body gets more and more detoxified, his need to rest or sleep would go down.

For instance, a person who normally slept ten

TAP SEVA SUMIRAN January - February 2017

12

A popular but misplaced belief is that a person generally gets tired because of lack of food or exhaustion due to excessive work. But the truth is that physical work consumes the least energy while digestion and assimilation of food and excretion of waste matter take a greater toll on the vital energy. Maximum vital power gets leaked when we crave for pleasures through our senses or get caught up in mental worries and tensions.

Another popular but wrong notion is that tea or coffee energizes the body. What people do not realize is that these stimulants have no nutrition value of their own and end up robbing the body of its

nutrition reserves during digestion. A person feeling tired during the day has acidic blood and these stimulant add more acid to an already fatigued body. Therefore, these harmful drinks should be avoided at all costs.

The only way out of a messy life is to sit up and take charge of how one works, rests and what one eats. One should try to use the body’s vital power wisely while allocating sufficient time for resting it, especially during night. One should also not take on more work-load than ones capacity as that would hasten the process of aging by unnecessarily draining the body of its vital energy.

hours at night would be fully charged in say six-seven hours after following this diet system, only needing half-an-hour rest during day-time. It does take time to reach this state of balance between the body and the mind. However, guided and gradual rational fasting is a good way to begin with the body’s purification process which may take days or months depending upon the level of accumulated impurities. During this time, the body’s vital energy works overtime to clean the system as it slowly gets freed of the overwhelming and energy-consuming function of digestion. It is therefore advisable to rest more during this period of fasting.

QUESTIONS-ANSWERS

QUESTIONS RELATED TO SADHANA ARE BEING

ANSWERED IN THIS COLUMN. PLEASE DO NOT

HESITATE IN RAISING MORE QUESTIONS AS IT

MIGHT HELP OTHER ASPIRANTS TOO.

Ques: Our body is made up of five elements. Is imbalance in these elements also a reason for occurrence of disease?

Ans: Yes, it can be said that imbalance in the five elements can be a reason for occurrence of disease.

The body is made up of five elements namely earth, water, fire, air and ether. Earth element is obtained from cereals, water element from vegetables, fire element from fruits, air element from leaves and ether by not eating. Often man is eating anything and everything from morning till evening. He is taking cereals, rich and heavy food and is ignoring the intake of other four elements. This is causing

imbalance amongst them. As a result of that, cereals get stuck inside the body and cause fermentation resulting in occurrence of disease.

In the ideal dietary system of Manas Yog Sadhna, the five elements have been incorporated according to their need and usefulness. If this system is adopted according to its efficacy then not only balance amongst the five elements is struck but freedom from diseases is also attained. Nature has fixed morning hours for cleaning of the body system. Hence at this

time, collecting ether element is useful i.e. by not eating anything. The cleaning process will receive a set back if any foodstuff is taken at this time.

During day time, air element i.e. leaves and fire element i.e. fruits should be taken. Leaves are particularly helpful in the process of purification. Besides, fruits are also very nutritive. Fruits provide radiance to the face since they contain prominently fire element. Raw eating will result in non-accumulation of

TAP SEVA SUMIRAN January - February 2017

14

human waste in the body thereby increasing immunity level gradually.

Afternoon is usually spent doing work. Hence it is not proper to take a heavy meal at that time. Besides, rest should follow after a heavy meal so afternoon is the not the right time. It is because of this reason that, in Manas

there is a provision for taking food comprising earth element at night.

Although even at night, food should largely consist of water element i.e. vegetables and a lesser quantity of earth element i.e. cereals.

This kind of food at night will be appropriate for repairing the existing damaged cells after

physical and mental activities of the day.

Also, the function of waste elimination will get toned up on its own.

This way impurities will not accumulate in the body if balance amongst the five elements is maintained through diet. This will lead any person to freedom from all diseases.

Ques: How can the old habit of taking an incorrect diet be reformed? It seems impossible to go to work without taking breakfast.

Ans: First of all, the principle underlying the belief regarding quitting breakfast is to be understood before being followed.

Do not try to change the age - old habit of taking breakfast in one go. Change it gradually. If you are used to taking two breads for breakfast at 8am then start taking one bread at 9am. After some days, take half along with juice at

10am. After few days, start taking juice, soup or honey water at 11am. This methodology will be useful in switching over from breakfast containing cereal-rich foodstuff to a predominantly non-cereal one.

Likewise, gradually reduce the quantity of cereals in the food taken during day-time and simultaneously add more seasonal fruits and

vegetable salad to your diet. After few months, switch over to fruits and salads only.

It you want to eat something at 4pm., then a small quantity of snacks can be taken.

As the body gets purified, non-intake of cereal-based breakfast will not create any problem and it will become easier to go to work and perform well there.

SADHAK’S EXPERIENCE

times meditation in a day, small exercises and meals served in the shivir. Scientific spiritual lectures of Tap Seva Sumiran lead the mind and heart in the right direction. I got inspiration and encouragement by experiences of many sadhaks. All these contributed and the result was that my diabetes was normal on the last day of the shivir. Since January 2016 to this day of December 2016, I did not take any medicines. Some times I eat sweets but sugar levels are reported

I, Asha Bissa (age 55 years) reside at Amaravati. About 7-8 years ago, I suffered from diabetes. Sugar level was increasing and it reached 550. Earlier the doctor prescribed medicines and later prescribed insulin injection. Alongwith diabetes, I had acidity and cholesterol problem. I had to swallow 12 tablets a day and it was costing me Rs, 3,000 per month. I was having severe headache as if I had brain tumor. I was not able to sleep whole night. There was twisting in hands and legs and doctors predicted I may have a paralysis attack. After treatment from all well known doctors of Amaravati, Pune, Mumbai, Dhamangaon etc, I desperate for the

cure of my sufferings.

In January 2016, I heard of Manas Yoga Sadhana. On request of some people, I went to the shivir without any hope. There all the patients were advised to stop medicines but I was taking medicines without knowledge of any one due to fear. After listening to the satsang and understanding it for 2 days, I stopped taking medicines on experimental basis. Whatever meals were given in the shivir for the 7 days, I ate only that and nothing else. Whatever guidelines were provided, I followed literally. For example taking enema two times a day, taking bath twice a day, two

normal. My body weight is reduced to 65 kg. from 85 kg. I am following the sadhana in my life as was explained in the shivir. I practice meditation twice regularly. Now I enjoy sound sleep at night. My mind is free from fear of disease and death.

I tell people about Tap Seva Sumiran and try to send 10-12 people to the shivir wherever these are held so that they may get the right direction of the art of living. I have

belief that people are not living their lives but are spending their lives in grief.

Earlier we used to eat four time, now we eat only one time. Earlier we were living a selfish life, now a selfless life in the service of others. Earlier we were spending our time in useless talks and now benefitting and enjoying it in meditation. Earlier we could not dare to bathe with cold water, now bathe with fresh

water in winter too. I have stopped taking tea, coffee and milk.

Now I can say that it is worth to live a life of renunciation and bliss. There is no better system of health on this earth than Tap Seva Sumiran. My life’s motto is inspire maximum number of people to this sadhana to serve humanity.Mobile: 9881440884

Traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, homeopathy, and naturopathy recommend fasting to treat various aliments. Grandmothers have long practised diet restrictions and use of specific foods to tackle simple fevers or manage chronic health care problems.

“The best of all medicines are rest and fasting, ‘’ said well-known American statesman, writer Benjamin Franklin, while Mahatma Gandhi used fasting as an effective political tool against the British during the freedom movement as well as to maintain his lifestyle.

However, the exact benefits of dietary restrictions or fasting

on the human health system have not been scientifically well understood.

Metabolic sensor

Now, a scientific team, including Nooruddin Khan from the University of Hyderabad and Bali Pulendran of the US, has found a mechanism by which the body is able to adapt to nutrient scarcity and thus explain the benefits of diet restrictions.

The scientists have identified a gene-GCN2 (General controlled non-repressedkinase) - which is a metabolic sensor involved in amino acid (building blocks of protein) starvation. The activation of this gene is the key

to boosting vaccine-induced immunity. They stumbled upon this mechanism while studying immune responses to the Yellow Fever vaccine (known to be among the most effective vaccines).

The research pointed out that low-protein diet or caloric restriction can help boost immunity. Ex-plaining the role of the gene, Khan told Business Line that it can sense a starvation-like condition in the stomach and gets activated. It starts cleaning up the system (autophagy) by getting rid of unwanted proteins and organic substances, in turn raising immunity and suppressing the inflammation process in the gut.

Restricting amino acids without leading to a malnutrition condition will dramatically bolster vaccine-induced immunity and protection of intestinal inflammation. In simple words, dietary restrictions or a balanced diet can protect us from a variety of disorders, especially inflammatory ones, and extend lifespan.

The scientists suggest that vaccine additives, called adjuvants, that are effective in stimulating the gene and regulate a response to starvation within cells would be potent in stimulating long-lasting immunity. They have been using this knowledge to engineer vaccines against infections such as dengue, TB and HIV.

Derivatives

The researchers are

identifying molecules (plant-based derivates) than can activate or mimic the gene function. In addition they are trying to use them as adjuvants and blend them with existing vaccines to improve their efficacy, said Khan.

In a research paper published in the March16 issue of Nature, Pulendran and Khan have shown that a low-protein diet or drugs that mimic its effect on immune cells could be tools for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.

Mice fed with a low-protein diet (2 per cent, compared to 16 per cent in standard diet) or a diet lacking only the amino acid leucine, were protected from signs of colitis, such as

weight loss and bloody diarrhea. On the other hand, mice lacking the GCN2 gene were not protected from colitis when fed a low-protein diet, which demonstrated the protective role of the gene.

Implications

The researchers interpret the findings to have implications for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. For the pharma industry. This understanding could open up avenues for developing drugs.

At the UoH, Khan’s team is probing the biology of nutrient sensing and immunological regulations in diseases such as TB, dengue and HIV. Courtesy Business Line

How is this state to be achieved ? How can the ever-active mind cease to be active? It is working even in sleep when it builds a dream-world of fantasy. But in deep sleep it ceases to be active and in those moments the Divine descent fills the vacuum. A vacuum in thinking, if it is to be deliberately brought about, will necessarily involve a process of cleansing, not only of the surface mind but also of the sub-conscious, as well as impressions of actions, not only

of this birth but of previous lives as well. This cleansing process must be preceded by a change in thinking and feeling, because thoughts are seeds from which actions spring. Our thoughts also attract good and bad circumstances for their fulfillment.

Meditation : Place and Time

A man, set firmly on the path, may meditate whenever the call comes to him, but the beginner must fix a time and a place. Just as a fixed hour for lunch brings on the appetite just before it, so a fixed time for meditation is very helpful and almost indispensable. The best time is between 3 to 5 a.m., sunrise and at sunset. Also, think of

Him when you go to bed, and pass into sleep in a spirit of surrender and thanksgiving.

When you sit for meditation in the morning, imagine that the Lord is present before you in resplendent glory and has enveloped you in a halo of light, imparting peace and strength to every cell of the body. Pray to Him to control your thoughts and movements throughout the day. Talk over your problems with Him and seek His guidance.

The place of meditation should be clean, fragrant and free from noise. If one cannot move to an isolated spot, one should be able to set apart a room for it. It should be reserved for meditation and should

be kept locked, to lock in the vibrations of your meditation so that when you enter it the next day, you find the atmosphere helpful.

For the seat, the Gita has recommended a mat of kusha grass, covered with deer skin and over it a clean white silken cloth. If these are not available, a woolen blanket may be kept apart for the purpose.

One must sit facing the East or the North. The devotee may assume any of the meditative postures given in a book on Yogic Asans but that posture is best in which one can sit for the longest time with the least effort. The important thing is that the spine should be erect - the back, neck and head being in a straight line. This posture is necessary for the rising

of, what is described in Yogic textbooks, as the Kundalini Shakti or the Serpent power along the Sushumna (a nerve passing through the centre of the spinal column) from the bottom of the spine to the top of the head, symbolically referred to as the Shakti rising to meet Shiva.

Company of Holy Men

Progress on the Divine path is impossible without the company of holy men or living contact with a saint. The poet in Sri Ram- charitmanas is so firm on this point that he categorically affirms that there is no other way —

LOKAHU VED NA AAN UPAU

Kabir stresses the same point when he says that you must have the company of one who knows the “secret” —BHEDI LEEJE SATH

Selfless Service improves Meditation

It has been the experience of many aspirants that discriminate service helps the devotee in getting over the rush of thoughts, for he, thereby, attracts the Grace of the Divinity.

If a Sadhak feels sleepy during meditation, he must take recourse to rational fasting.

Vairagya or detachment has also to be cultivated for proper meditation. The average man on the animal plane has little seminal substance left in him to rouse the Kundalini or go into deep meditation. Thus self-control becomes very important.

Experience of Egolessness

The Lord manifests Himself on the intellectual plane as

consciousness when all layers of the ego-self have been worked out or cleansed and the aspirant finds himself lost quite as a block of salt is dissolved in water and loses its identity. Then the Name and the Form disappear imperceptibly and contact is established with the formless Divinity. Then follows the experience — I am He or I am a part of the same Consciousness quite as a ray of light is part of the sun. To be one with the Divine, the seeker loses the ego - sense or Ahamkar, “I am the doer” idea, which was the source of the thought that he was an independent person. Also, having lost body consciousness and known the Self to be eternal, he gets over the fear of death. He also comes to know that the

Divinity is immanent in all things and beings and supports all that exists. Advancing further, he frees himself from the greater illusion of being the doer of actions.

In between these stages, he becomes aware that it is the Lord who breathes in him and not he.

What is achieved in meditation, is often lost in dealing with men in this mundane world. If fear assails the devotee or if he feels insulted that is the time to evaluate one’s progress and to know that further cleansing is necessary.

The devotee cultivates a spirit of detachment in every day life by knowing that the Lord is operating behind every event. Of course, the ideal position is to see oneself playing the role

allotted in the world-drama by the Supreme Director.

The ego-self is also lost in the intensity of love for the Lord as with the tribesmen who waited on Lord Rama in Chitrakoot. Not only the Puranas, history has many examples of such devotees —Mira, Tukaram, Eknath and others. The loss of the ego-self is referred to by Jesus when he says :

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9-23).

He also said “ I can be of my own self do nothing.”

St. Paul was referring to the loss of ego, when he said, “I die daily.”

Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863. His pre monastic life name was Narendra dutta. His father Vishwanath Dutta believed in Western cults. He wished that his son would receive modern education and follow western customs. Since early childhood Narendra was an intelligent boy and his mind had a bent to know God. So at first he joined Brahama Samaj but it failed to satisfy him.

Hearing the name of Rama Krishna Paramahans, he visited him with the idea to argue but seeing him, Rama Krishna recognized at once that he is the disciple he was looking for. With his grace, he achieved self

realization. Consequently he was a main disciple among his disciples. After renouncement, his name was changed to Swami Vivekananda.

Swami Vivekananda had dedicated his life to his guru. During his last days, swami Vivekananda had been regularly present with his guru without worrying about the pitiable financial condition of his family and about his meals. The

body of the guru had turned very weak. Due to mouth cancer, there was regular desecration of phlegm, bad blood, cough etc from his mouth. He took total care to cleanse all the vessels.

On an occasion, one of the colleagues had shown dislike and carelessness in the nursing and shown contempt. Noticing this behaviour, Vivekananda was grossly outraged. In a way to educate his colleague and showing reverence for everything of the guru, Vivekananda drank the spit pot containing phlegm and cough lying next to guru’s bed.

On account of his total devotion and faith in the guru, he had been able to serve his physical body and his noble ideals. He

could dissolve his ego in the Self of the guru and was able to spread his message of invaluable spiritual wisdom in the whole universe. In the foundation of his great personality laid his devotion, service and faith for his guru.

At an age of 25 years, Narendra Dutta had put on saffron robes. Then he roamed all over India on foot. In 1893 an all religion conference was being held at Chicago in America. Swami Vivekananda attended as a representative from India. In those times, Indians were looked down heavily by Europeans and Americans. There the people tried their utmost not to allow swami Vivekananda to speak in the all religion conference. Due to intense efforts of a American professor,

he was allotted a little time to address the conference but the public was astonished to listen his thoughts. Now He received warm welcome all over America. Then he spent 3 years there and enlightened their minds with the Indian theology.

‘The world would be an orphanage in absence of spiritualism and Indian philosophy’ was his utmost opinion. He had the power to bring the world to his opinion.

Swami Vivekananda was an awakened person by birth. In childhood, while he was sitting in meditation, a snake grovelled near him. All others shocked out of fear ran away but he was absorbed in meditation.

He left this mortal body in 1902. He used to call himself servant of the poor. He laboured to raise the honour of

our country all over the world.

He sponsored some good thoughts and are laid as

All are living gods, realize it in your hearts All men who were great, are blessed with the same light.

Human birth is best of all incarnations, as we can free ourselves of the cycle of life and death in this incarnation.

Will a day come in our life, when we can sacrifice our life for welfare of others? The life is not given for selfish aggrandizement. Great are those who please others even at the cost of their life.

Unify speech with your thoughts and practice feelings in your life. Shri Rama Krishna calls it ‘let no theft happen in the home of your feelings i.e. heart’.

So long you have faith in God and Guru, devotion and truth, no one will be able to harm you. The moment you happen to lose one, the results will be catastrophic.

If somebody talks ill of others on your face, do not heed it. Hearing such talks is sin.

Proceed and let us work without worrying about name, fame or with a desire of mastering over

others. If we can rid ourselves of the three bondages of desires, anger and greed, then we are with truth.

He who is servant to all is in truly master of all those. He who has no bound of love, he who does not bother about upper or lower caste of people finds the whole universe at his feet.

We often observe that good people too have

adversities and problems in life. But I have experienced that there is not a single thing in this world which is not found good by nature. The waves on the surface may appear any way but as we enter the inner core of things we find eternal love and welfare. So as long as we do not have access to this core, we are put in troubles.

In samadhi, the seeker loses the awareness that he is meditating and comes in living contact or be one with the Divine. Descending from those heights, however, he becomes aware that it is the Lord breathing in his physical frame. A

spontaneous surrender to Him is the outcome of what he has known and felt. The devotee reaches the same goal as the Yogi but without knowing that he has travelled along the spinal centres. This is but natural because

even in our everyday life, every thought and action has its birth in a corresponding vibration or echo along the spine but we are not aware of it.

IASS NEWS SADHAK DIWAS (December 9, 2016)

Ninth December was celebrated as ‘Sadhak Diwas’ in the memory of his divine grace Shri Akhileshji Maharaj and Pujya Savita Maa at Badari Narayan Sevagram, Meerut. Devoted sadhaks arrived from all over the country to express their love and faith in the principles preached by Guruji. They promised to become torch bearers of what Akhileshji taught and stood for in his short but very pro-active lifetime.

The day began with the usual meditation session followed by the chanting of auspicious mantras during yagna ceremony. This was followed by a prayer meeting at Hriday Kunj where sadhaks expressed their heartfelt grief and shared their memorable experiences

with the Reverend Guru ji. The programme ended with guidance and future directions given by Malti Maa, the present spiritual head of IASS.

A bhandara was arranged during the afternoon and night in ashram and nearby villages.

Some excerpts from speeches made:

Swami Prahlad ji Maharaj: To be born in the human form is not easy so every person should try to change his or her life for the better. The starting point is always now. Akhileshji was a true idol of selfless service and love, who took forward teachings of Yogiji Maharaj, spreading the message of health and happiness. Pujya Malti Maa is

presently in charge of taking these principles forward and it is under her able leadership that the organization is growing. It is our duty to support her and the principles both Yogiji and Akhileshji stood for.

Malti Maa (Spiritual Head): We are very fortunate to have had the company and leadership of Akhileshji.

For such a spirited, young and zealous person, his death was certainly untimely. He will be fondly missed by all of us.

For us, what is of fundamental importance now is that we realize the value of ‘satsang’ so that we can stay connected with the principles he espoused.
