Cannon Design Inc. [Vancouver] Sept ’08 – Jan ‘09

_Sparkling Hills (VA)

At Cannon Design, I was able to develop my interest in solving complex geometry through the use of computaƟ on. While hav-ing parƟ cipated in modelling and detailing the Kelowna Resort, my biggest conribuƟ on came through in solving the geometry of its Atrium and realizing it through discus-sions with the structural engineers. I have also produced some of the fi nal images for promoƟ on.

Kohn Peterson Fox Architects [New York] Jan ’08 – April ‘08

_Jing An Towers (Shang Hai)

Being my fi rst internship, I was thrown directly into the fi re as the project was in it fi nal stages of design. My contribuƟ on came in the form of Modelling through Rhinoc-eros and producing renderings for client comprehension. Much of the term revolved around the tweaking and fi ne tuning of the Shang Hai Towers before being sent to CD.

Bjarke Ingels Group. [Denmark] May’10 – Aug ‘10

_Bungaraya Masterplan (Malaysia)_Astana NaƟ onal Library (Kazakstan)_Gardiner Expressway Masterplan (T.O)_World Village of Womens Sports (SW)

The internship exposed me to a wide variety of projects. I was able to complete two compeƟ Ɵ ons from start to fi nish and contribute to two built projects. My work involved designing through both modeling virtually and physically, developing drawing sets and solving complex systems dealing with fascade typologies and stucture. My skills proved to be a great asset to the oŌ en 3 person teams.

Giannone Petricone Associates [Toronto] Jan’11 – Apr ‘11

_The Keg Restaurant(T.O)_Terroni Restaurant (T.O)

At this medium sized oĸ ce, I was respon-sible for preparing mulƟ ple presentaƟ on packages for The Keg Restaurant in The Greater Toronto Area. These packages required rendered views, rendered Plans, ElevaƟ ons and SecƟ ons, as well as area calculaƟ ons. I was simultaneously tasked to provide millwork drawings and specifi ca-Ɵ ons for a Terroni Restaurant being reno-vated in the downtown region.

William Dewson Architects. [Toronto] Jan ’10 – April ‘10 May ’09 – Aug ‘09_77 Chestnut Road. (Toronto)_27 Farnham Ave (Toronto)_Stem Plate Systems(Patent)

This small oĸ ce has given me a great set of ‘real’ skills to take on as an architect. I parƟ cipated in designing, modelling and detailing a number of Toronto Eco Friendly Houses and CoƩ ages. The greatest skill how-ever was the confi dence gained from the 1 0n 1 relaƟ onships developed with clients through meeƟ ngs on site and in house.

Statement

When working for SOM over the summer, I attended several lectures of CASE -Center for Architecture

Science & Ecology, a multi-discipline collaboration effort between SOM architects and engineers with the

researchers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute- which triggered an interest in prototyping and building

technologies. It was quite inspiring how their research involved often full scale fabrication of different

skins and system assemblies. The fabrication allowed the testing of their designs, a crucial step for the

success of their architectural products. Furthermore, the physical built-form was an excellent way to

FRQYH\GHVLJQREMHFWLYHV WR WKHLU FOLHQWV DVZHOO DV WKHRWKHUZRUNHUV LQ WKHRI¿FH:KDW , UHPHPEHUmost from the discussions was how cross-collaboration is essential in the development of building

technologies. For instance, kinetic wall-systems required the help of naval and aero-spatial engineers

because the precision needed was not offered by architectural tools. Although B-Shack works on a

different scale, I am very enthusiastic at the idea of working with other disciplines, also deeply concerned

B-Shack is thus extremely useful in that sense.

FARMMhouse (2012-13) – the b-Shack – SHORT DESCRIPTION

The b-Shack will be small but highly innovative architectural folie designed, fabricated and as-sembled by graduate students in the Facility for Architectural Research in Mediation and Me-diation (FARMM) at the McGill University School of Architecture. The b-Shack thus asks to students to question how sustainable architecture might participate in the address of ecological disasters like colony collapse dis-order while at the same time educating the public about the critical role of honeybees to our world and environment. The small building consists of an innovative steel structure supporting a custom designed and formed plastic skin that accommodates bee-friendly planting and the installation of three contemporary versions of the observation beehive—a utopian project that perhaps inspired Modern architecture. The shack also provides space for educational work-shops and storage of equipment for a group of local beekeepers.

The FARMMhouse series of projects offers an opportunity for students to learn and ex-plore advanced scripting, digital fabrication and mass customization techniques at an architectural scale through an applied re-search project. Every two years, graduate students in architecture and related crea-[P]LÄLSKZHYLPU]P[LK[VHWWS`[VWHY[PJPWH[Lin the yearlong FARMMhouse project. The overarching goal of each FARMMhouse is to introduce students to advanced forms of professional practice, digital scripting, and innovative fabrication techniques. Learning is accomplished through applied research in the design and construction of a full-scale pavilion for use and display to the larger public of the city of Montreal.

Over the course of the next three years the FARMMhouse is known as the b-Shack. The project brief grows out of questions about architecturally methodology that are at the core of the SSHRC-funded MMOT (Mod-eling Methodologies of Our Time) research-through-creation initiative currently under ^H` PU-(944)YPLÅ`446; PZ L_WSVYPUNthrough comparative analysis popular con-temporary architecture design strategies to ascertain how method relates to philosophy. The project is thus deeply rooted in desires similar to those expressed at the heart of larger sustainability efforts while simultaneously critically engaging the same practices associated with those desires.

To further the goals of MMOT, the b-Shack will be a small

structure built on a farm outside of Montreal already involved in public outreach and education. The b-Shack is intend-ed to be a small but highly innovative architectural folie de-signed, fabricated and assembled by a team of graduate students in the Facility for Architectural Research in Media-tion and Mediation (FARMM) at the McGill University School of Architecture. “Santropol Roulant uses food as a vehicle to break social and economic isolation between generations and cultures.” From humble beginnings, Santropol Roulant has transformed itself into a dominant force in the Montreal food scene, with the Meals on Wheels program reaching hundreds of homes and through becoming a global pioneer in planter agricul-ture. Education represents an essential tool in community

skin that accommodates bee-friendly planting and the installation of three contemporary versions of the observation beehive—a utopian project that perhaps inspired Modern architecture. The shack also pro-vides space for educational workshops and storage of equipment for an active group of beekeepers al-ready working in the city of Montreal.

There is a long history of keeping bees to collect in-gredients from them for food, medicine and raw ma-terial to make everyday objects. There is an equally strong relation between the bees, beehives and Mod-ern Architecture, as Juan Antonio Ramirez has stated PUOPZIVVRSLUN[OZ[\K`VU[OLHWPHUPUÅ\LUJLZVMHY-chitecture—The Beehive Metaphor: From Gaudi to Le Corbusier. Ramirez notes the keeping of bees in Fran-JV»Z:WHPUVMMLYLKHMHPU[OVWLVMÄUHUJPHSPUKLWLUK-ence and success. It is to this hope that the father of Victor Erice’s Spirit of the Beehive desperately clings.

Though he does not particularly dwell on the implica-tions, Ramirez acknowledges that this strategy failed as P[VI]PV\ZS`OHKPU,YPJL»ZÄST

The Modern Project, of course, also failed. Its estrange-ment is at the root of the proliferation of theoretical ap-proaches to architecture in the late 1970s through the middle 1990s. These paper architectures were an at-tempt at a critical engagement with the legacy of that failure. Beginning in the 1990s, the opportunity to build the resulting new forms of architecture without the need MVYQ\Z[PÄJH[PVUILJHTLUV[Q\Z[WVZZPISLI\[KLYPN\L\YWhy write or draw when you can do, after all? This en-gagement was built upon a strange nostalgia for the new or the avante garde in the Modern that fails to recognize its downfall as a result of its loss of pataphysics. After all the strange forms of the late Le Corbusier or the organic WVVSZ PU4PLZ»Z SHUKZJHWLZVMMLYLKIHSHUJLHUKYLÅLJ-tion upon the seemingly rigid adherence to new tech-nique. The rigid formalism of the architectures was not complete in and of itself.

The b-Shack will attempt to bring back the critical en-gagement with the loss of pataphysics by camping on one of the popular architectural methods that is now being offered up as a discourse—the biomimetic. Bio-mimetic architecture in its strongest form attempts to recreate life as architecture by imitating perceived life-giving or enabling processes. Camping, you will recall is the theatrical, affective exaggeration of something for

humorous effect. But it can also be an overtly activist and political tool as ACT UP used it in the 1990s to make the public aware of the grow-ing AIDS crisis. Camp, as meta-method for the project, functions in both manners like the best of the b-movies that inspire the b-Shack tactically. For MMOT, the standard-bearer of this type of work might be 1VZO>OLKVU»Z*HIPUPU[OL>VVKZOLSK\WHZHJYP[PJHSYLÅLJ[PVUVM3LCorbusier’s cabanon-a Modern project perhaps more intensely fraught with problems than most others.
