life cycle service

Smoke Control’s Full Life Cycle Service

ensures that at any stage of the project – from design through to commissioning – the only company

responsible is Smoke Control.

DESIGN

Backed by qualified fire engineers and experienced personnel, the level of design assistance and product support we provide sets Smoke Control apart as a leader in the fire protection sector.

SUPPLY

We’ve worked hard to gain a reputation for delivering superior quality solutions, something we achieve by partnering only with globally reputable suppliers that match our own high standards

INSTALL

Smoke Control has a fully trained and approved installation network that allows us to maintain a standard of integrated system installation that equals the high quality of our products

MAINTAIN

The continued functionality of our products is extremely important to us, which is why we ensure we always have the capability, human resources and parts to maintain a range of systems

tunnel door selection

These days, a myriad of data based on real tunnel fires and full scale fire tests of decommissioned tunnels in Europe is readily available to Tunnel Designers and Fire Engineers throughout Australia and New Zealand. There is therefore no need to make the mistakes of the past. However, design of tunnel doors in our region shows virtually a different specification for each tunnel design. These differences may vary based on expected fire loads in tunnels. Risk can be, and is mitigated through the exclusion of specific types of vehicles. However, is the resultant fire load calculated using up to date information and world best practice? Recent full scale fire testing in abandoned tunnels shows that fires involving daily traffic (excluding petrol tankers) result in rapid high-temperature fires similar to those of a Hydrocarbon fire. This means that the Standard Cellulosic Time-temperature curve provided in AS1530.4 is no longer an acceptable fire performance test for building elements used in constructing tunnels.

Recent research clearly shows tunnel fires re-radiate heat

from the surrounding structure causing temperature rise in

line with the Hydrocarbon time-temperature curve.

The Conclusions in the Runehamar report clearly state “the cargo was simulated using different mixtures of cellulose and plastics (about 80/20 mass ratio). This represents ordinary cargos transported daily on the roads and thereby often passing through tunnels. The type and amount of combustible materials varied between the tests, but all four combustible materials showed very fast increase in temperature after an initial delay. The results also showed that the tunnel construction and protections need to withstand very high temperature. The standard fire curve best representing test results is the RWS curve.” Combine this with a tunnel’s design life and onerous environment during normal use, there is no other option than Smoke Control’s cost effect tunnel door selections which come with inherent high performance properties that standard timber based fire doors simply cannot meet.

This is the safest code for tunnels and relates to a

possible 300MW fire based on daily loaded freight

trucks including petrol tankers. The Runehamar fire tests showed that daily traffic in-

cluding trucks loaded with cellulosic and plastic (load

ratio of 80/20 by mass) also resulted in rapid tempera-

ture growth and any tunnel materials should be con-

structed to meet this criteria. Internationally, tis is the

This is the general fire test method applied for commer-

cial and residential building materials. Generally, doors

fire tested using this method are not permitted to be

more than 1/3 larger than the wall in which it is installed.

A myriad of fire doors with different performance levels are available, but how do you know

that your specificaon can be met with a cost effecve soluon rather than a bespoke designed

and fabricated tested system.

Our Australian made high performance doors offer overall benefits beyond just a fire rang at a

cost effecve price when compared to custom designed doors and even imported doors when

trying to meet a unique specificaon for a specific tunnel. By specifying Smoke Control’s

specialty doors, you are buying Australian made high performance doors fabricated by a 100%

Australian owned an operated business.

Our plant and equipment doors offer a high fire

performance in addition to moisture resistance, impact

resistance, and security. Blast resistance is also available

subject to the appropriate door hardware. These doors have been used extensively in tunnels

throughout Australia including the Lane Cove tunnel. Contact us for more design details to suit your project

needs on 1300 665 471.
