I hope you have marked, Sunday, September 7 th on your calendar as that is RALLY DAY at Little Chapel. During the 10:30 worship service we will say “thank you” to those who have been teaching this past year, and recognizing and dedicating those who are going to be teaching in 2014/2015. Many of you know that I am a firm believer in Sunday School and in Christian Education. That is one reason I will always teach a Sunday School class, as I am a firm believer that so goes your Sunday School, so goes the church. I realize that enriching the lives of the community of faith through Christian Education is a huge task. Studying scripture and learning the ways of Christ is challenging. I know that there are different ways in which people learn, and I think in that area Jesus was way ahead of his time. Throughout the Gospels we read of Jesus teaching by storytelling, parables, and by the example of how he lived. He even used art when he drew in the sand after rescuing a woman from stoning. No matter what our learning style, Jesus, the master teacher, had many lessons which are still timely and important today. For us to understand the gospels and epistles of the New Testament and the Hebrew scriptures on which Jesus relied, we need help. Sunday morning worship, Sunday School, Bible Studies, Women circle meetings, youth group, men’s breakfast all provide us with opportunities to learn in community with other believers. Christian Education is the intentional gathering of God’s people to study and learn about God and God’s promises. Every moment at Little Chapel on the Boardwalk is a teaching moment. On September 7 th , when we have Rally Day and focus on the Christian Education of Little Chapel, I hope you will get involved, either in a Sunday school class, or a Bible Study or some other avenue that can help as you journey with Christ. You won’t be sorry. CHILDREN’S CHOIR

Working in conjunction with the Christian Educa-tion Committee, I am hap-py to announce a new component to an already outstanding Sunday school curriculum - the addition

of music and music education for all our Sunday school participants ages K through grade 5 and the re-formation of the Children’s Choir. This means a slight change in the format of Sunday school and includes all children in the Children’s Choir. Starting on Sunday September 7, Sunday school will begin at the usual 9:15 AM time, but all students and teachers will gather for an assembly in the Choir Room where age appropriate, fun, scripture-based music will be presented and learned, similar to the successful Vacation Bible School experience this past summer. This new, opening session of Sunday school will be led by me, with Jean Schild at the piano. In turn, the kids will share their music with the congregation from time to time at the 10:30 AM Worship Service.

FALL SCHEDULE REMINDERS

Our first music fellowship dinner will be held on Thursday Septem-ber 25 at the King Neptune on Lumina here at the Beach from 6-7 PM, followed by Chancel Choir re-hearsal at 7:30 PM.

CHRISTMAS CANTATA SCHEDULED

Our annual Christmas Cantata has been scheduled for Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the 10:30 AM Worship Service. This year’s Cantata is entitled “Love Came Down at Christmas,” by composer Joel Raney. It focuses on four aspects of Advent – Hope, Peace, Joy and Love, with familiar Christmas carols throughout and is underscored with narration.

WELCOME EMILY DONOVAN

At a special Called Session Meeting on Sunday, Au-gust 31, the Session heard a recommendation from the Personnel and Planning Committee to hire Emily Donovan as the part-time Youth Director for Little Chapel. After a short discussion the Ses-sion voted unanimously for the hiring of Emily. She will begin on Sunday, September 7, RALLY DAY. I know you will want to be sure and intro-duce yourself to Emily, her husband, David and their children. Emily comes to us highly recommended. She served on the Harbor District Youth Council of the United Methodist Church and she worked at Pine Valley United Methodist Church as their Youth Ministry Director. She comes with a great deal of enthusiasm and knowledge about youth ministry. On her resume, Emily wrote: “I find great joy in serving others by utilizing the gifts and talents God has offered me to continue the work of His Son. I have a passion for youth … and I believe a life devoted to understanding and follow-ing Christ is central to the development of our chil-dren, youth and young adults - and worth celebrat-ing every day!”

We are indeed fortunate to have Emily on board as she helps our teenagers

in their faith journey.

Dear Friends, All of your prayers, calls and visits have certainly been ap-preciated by Buck and myself. The flowers have been a bright spot too! It is a great comfort to know we have the love and support of all our friends at the Little Chapel.

With Love, Mary Ann Barden

PS Drop in and visit him at Clare Bridge - he would love it! Dear LCOB, The Family of Marguerite Fiddner appreciates the prayers and thoughts shown during our time of loss. She was a wonderful Christian. Thanks,

Little Chapel received a big THANK YOU from Southport Presbyterian Church for donating our

leftover Vacation Bible School decorations to them.♥ Dear Little Chapel, It was such a treat for our cottages and students to be able to have so much love and generosity poured out for them. I know for some it was the first time they had ever seen the beach. I'm so appreciative of your church and the experience that was provided for our students, it is truly a week that they will remember for life. Thank you SO much!

Stephen Fowler The Crossnore School

I am hearing so much excitement and great feedback from our kids and adults about their time at the beach. This sounds like it was a wonderful experience. We are so grate-ful for the generosity of Little Chapel, to host us in this way. Please give our heartfelt thanks to everyone who was in-volved. Thanks! Adam Jarrell

MATTHEW HOUSE IN REVIEW The Matthew House serves two purposes.

One is to provide housing for groups who travel to the Wilmington area to participate in mission work.

The other is to provide a safe place for the children from Crossnore School to have an opportunity

to enjoy time at the beach.

CROSSNORE SCHOOL A SPECIAL MINISTRY

When we first envisioned the guests who would likely use the Matthew House, we had no idea that we would also meet some very special children at Crossnore School in Crossnore, NC. When our missionaries made their first trip to Avery County in the fall of 2013, one of their work locations was this school for children who needed the stability of a family, therapy, loving adults, good educa-tion, and the opportunity to be “a kid.” Living in one of the 12 cottages on the school campus, a dedicated staff works to ensure that these children (pre-school to twelfth grade) had the opportunities for all of these things, plus occasional fun and safe field trips. The annual beach trip is anticipated all year, but when

the house that had been deeded to the school had to be sold, few adults or children were optimistic. So it was a natural oppor-tunity for us at the Little Chapel on the Boardwalk to seek to meet that need. Working with the director, Brett Loftis, your Mission

Committee found a few weeks during which we could offer the use of the Matthew House for a beach visit, and a new relationship began. This year, four cottages, each with two cottage parents and two resident counselors, gratefully accepted our offer, for what we hope is the first annual beach vacation for the children we have grown to love from afar. Because the children have their own bed-

rooms at Crossnore, we were concerned about the bunk situa-tion… but not to worry – every one of them wanted a top bunk! Since the families use the dining hall for meals, they really appreci-ated the special table space which accommodated everyone. By the way, before they left, each group did a top to bottom cleaning of the house, just like they would do back in Crossnore. Considerable discussion led to our offer of a stay at Matthew

House, but it is no longer something we need to evalu-ate… the children and adults had a wonderful time, thanks to the generosity of the members of our congre-gation. And we have invited them back for next year. This special hospitality has turned into a Mission for us at Little Chapel on the Boardwalk… a mission where we don’t have to leave town to make a differ-ence. And the beautiful statue of Christ and the Cross in our Narthex will serve as a per-manent reminder of the gift that these children are for us.

Next month

we will tell about the use of the Matthew House

for travelling mission groups!

Mission Trip to Avery County October 20 - 24, 2014

Last October, 14 LCOB missionaries headed to Crossnore with a mission to serve at The Crossnore School and Avery County Habitat For Humanity. We made friendships with our wonderful host families from the Crossnore Presbyteri-an Church and our hearts were captured by some very spe-cial children. In April of this year, a mission team from Crossnore Presbyterian came to our Matthew House and worked with Kids Making It and the Wilmington Area Re-building Ministry (WARM) serving in our communi-ty. This summer, we were blessed to host over 20 kids from the Crossnore School at our Matthew House over a two week period. This was a fun vacation at Wrightsville Beach and will be a happy memory for some who have few. Thanks to pioneering missionaries and all Little Chapel members who shared Christ’s love so generously! Special THANKS TO MARY JO KOHUNSKY AND SUSAN LONG who co-chaired the Crossnore kids visit team! You might say we have come full circle. But the mission goes on and we have another opportunity to serve. A mis-sion group from the Little Chapel will depart on Monday, October 20th carpooling on a six hour trip to Avery Coun-ty near Crossnore. We will stay at the Avery County Habi-tat For Humanity Gilmer Center for four nights. Our mis-sion will be a Habitat home build for a young family of 4...the mother is a Crossnore School graduate...how great is that! We will work on the home on Tuesday and Thursday and visit The Crossnore School grounds and Grandfather Home for Children on Wednesday. Friday morning, we will return home, reinvigorated. The cost will be $75 which provides overnight accommodations for four nights and lunch on Tuesday and Thursday. We have room for ten men and 10 women. Fresh air and beautiful mountain scenery at peak color will be a small part of your re-ward. Please prayerfully consider joining the mission team. Signup sheets will be in the Narthex beginning Sunday, Au-gust 31st. For more information, please contact Sharon Minor, [email protected] or 910-686-0794.

TILESTON OUTREACH Tileston reopens on September 8th and beginning Sun-day, August 31st, we invite you to bring the donations you’ve been collecting during the summer and place them on the Tileston Bench at the Little Chapel. Please remember -- summer clothing during the month of September and fall/winter clothing beginning in Oc-tober. In addition to clothing and shoes, items such as towels, bedspreads, sheets, household items, and toilet-ries are greatly appreciated. 2ND LOAF Little Chapel on the Board-walk completed our 14th year of supporting 2nd Loaf and the Good Shepherd Center. THANK YOU for supporting this vital ministry and helping to feed our hungry neighbors

in Wilmington. A special “thank you” to the following groups and individuals that provided time on Saturday mornings or were drivers on Monday mornings. On vir-tually every Saturday, the pantry and refrigerator shelves were brimming with food. Most of the people dropping off food said “thank you” to Little Chapel for our efforts. Our efforts were small, but the rewards were great! The Pathfinders, bible study group volunteered to take the month of June, both for collection of food and drivers. Thank you to Tonia, Tim, Adeline, and Ashton Hines, Bill and Steven Miller, Barbara Tyndall (coordinator), David and Lee Allen, Gene and Janet Anvil, Janice and Reuben Allen, and Nancy and Cos Cosby for volunteering. The choir had taken the month of July, both collection of food and drivers. Thank you to Mila Hill, Janice Willets, Jane Hughes, Dan Hammond, Helen Swartz, Mary Coble, Cos Cosby, Joyce Bradley, Sheri and Jim Alexander, Pat Vass, Kathy Blizzard, and Susan Long (coordinator). Members of the church volunteered for 2nd Loaf in August. Thank you to Peggy Gentry, Shirley Clawson, Marshall Clawson, Marsha Casteen, Freddie Ledford, Ann and Jim Martz, Dan and Cheryl Hammond with grandchildren Isabelle and Seth, Russ Miller, Maggie North, Mary and Pat Roche, and Scottie Anderson. Rick Pindell and Mary Roche deliv-ered flyers to the realtors, which informed the beach vaca-tioners of 2nd Loaf and Little Chapel. Reverend Rabun assisted on most mornings and Martha Parker provided considerable assistance with flyers and communications. A special “thank you” to Ann Martz (and her side kick Jim), who has been the 2nd Loaf coordinator for the past eight years. Great job Ann! This has been a great way to help a wonderful ministry for Little Chapel and we look forward to the summer of 2015.

THURSDAY

MORNING

BIBLE STUDY

In September the Thursday Morning Bible Study Group will begin the study of David by Beth Moore. In David: Seeking a Heart Like His, Beth Moore explores the life of David from shepherd boy to king. David's life serves both as a good and a bad example for modern-day Christians, as Beth draws spiritual insight and understanding from a man who slew a giant and saved a kingdom. David lived thousands of years ago, yet he dealt with many issues that plague God's people today. We are praying that we can expand our number of partici-pants in active Bible study. We are called by God to know His word and to live by His commandments. If you've ever had doubts, fought temptations, battled personal in-consistencies, fallen into sin, suffered losses or anguished over family problems, this Bible study is for you! And, to quote Beth, "If you haven't, you may need to check your pulse!" David is an in-depth eleven week Bible study. It takes us through virtually every twist and turn of David's life as a shepherd, a refugee, and a king. Each week contains five daily lessons, based on Scripture, which each participant is asked to complete. These five lessons are the basis for our discussion groups, which last an hour. We spend the sec-ond hour watching a video by Beth which furthers our study. All interested persons are invited to join us and experience God's love and grace as we study, learn and share with oth-er believers. This study will be held every Thursday morn-ing, 9:00 - 11:00 AM. Leaders are Jean Schild and Jannet Kramer. Signup list is located in the narthex. Call Jean for questions - 509-2861. Cost of study book is $15.95. ♥ HOSPICE MEALS OF LOVE ♥

The Little Chapel Mission Committee has set the date, SEPTEMBER 16, 2014, for our third time to prepare a lunch meal for Hospice Care Center. Look for sign-up sheets in the narthex. We look forward to you help-ing us with this wonderful mission opportunity.

News for September

and Your Special

Invitation to the Fall Gathering

What a short summer this has been. It is time for Fall Gathering on September 8th and time to be thinking of your favorite Dish to bring to the Fellowship Hall with a your Thank Offering to kick off another year of God’s Work and spreading fellowship and love to one an-other. If you are new to Little Chapel , Presbyterian women share three Gatherings a year. One in the Fall on the Monday after Labor Day, the first Monday night in December and end our year the first Monday night in June. These Gatherings are a special time for the Women who come to Little Chapel to share an evening of Fellowship .All women who come to Little Chapel do not join a Circle or a Sunday School Class or become a Choir member or belong to a Committee. The Gatherings are for every woman to have an opportunity to meet and enjoy the fellowship. The P W Council and the Hostesses make a joint effort to extend the hand of friend-ship. Please make your plans to join in an evening of Fellow-ship on Monday night September 8th at 6:30 in the fellow-ship hall. The food is always delicious, the decorations are festive and creative, the fellowship is bonding and promises to be an evening you will enjoy. This September offers many new beginnings. After Labor Day the fall Bible Study begins. Jean Schild and Janet Kra-mer ,our dedicated bible study leaders, have chosen Beth Moore’s THE LIFE OF DAVID for our study. We invite friends from our neighborhoods to join us. Take a little time for yourself and enjoy this opportunity. The Introduction to the Study is Thursday, August 28th at 9 Am. The study books are $15.95. There is a signup sheet in the Narthex. September offers “Mother’s Morning Out” to give Mother’s and Grandmother’s a few hours break and they know Linda Allen and her caring staff will give their children a loving and safe place to be with other children. September is a time for the Choir to reassembled after hav-ing a Summer Choir in June and July and time to attend the Beach Service in August or sit in the Congrega-tion on Sunday mornings. We welcome new members.

The Choir practices begin in Sept. and are held on Thursday nights at 7:30 to 9 PM. Once a month we go out to dinner together. Hand bells also start their rehearsals in September and join the choir for “dinner out”. The September list of opportunities are many. I have named only a few for you to consider sharing with us. Call Rev. Pat Rabun, Martha Parker in the church office, David Heins-man , Director of Music, Iris Davis, Moderator of Presby-terian Women or ask any Elder or Deacon and they will gladly help you find a place to help Little Chapel on the Boardwalk. We need you and your talents. God gives every-one something to share and give back. Please share yours at LCOB. Peace and Grace,

Iris Davis

CHRISTMAS IN

AUGUST Last month we asked you to donate gifts from Good Shepherd’s Christmas in August wish list. Once again, because of your gen-erous hearts, we were able to deliver an abundance of much-needed food and other items. Thank you very much for your over-whelming response.

The Church Women United Area IX meeting will be held

Friday, September 13 St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church

1416 Market Street.

Guest speaker is Dr. Dwight Lysney, Director of Haven Ministries, located at 16th Street and Mar-ket Street. He will share some of his experiences helping clients recover from drug addiction. The ministry is housed in a facility of St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Registration is at 10:00AM with the program at 11:30AM

followed by a covered dish luncheon (you do not need to bring food).

Please join us for this time of Christian fellowship. For more information,

contact Jean Northrop, 686-5376.

On Wednesday, September 17, the Stephen Ministers of Little Chapel will host a congregational dinner, fol-lowed by a talk by Jason Clamme, Director of Com-munity Outreach for Lower Cape Fear Hospice and

Life Care Center. Jason is a versatile and gifted speaker and will bring us information concerning the benefits of advance-care planning and communication. Stud-ies indicate that the majority of people do not have advance directives nor do they feel comfortable in having critical end-of-life conversations. Most of us

do have preferences, however, about the kind of med-ical care we would want if faced with end-of-life deci-sions. Because of this situation, a public education program entitled "Begin the Conversation" has been initiated to encourage everyone to identify and com-

municate their healthcare choices. The website BeginTheConversation.org offers access to down-loadable forms, personal testimonies, upcoming

events, and critical resources and materials. Jason will explain this program to us and offer suggestions for us

as we approach these difficult decisions. And this program will appeal to all adults, as younger adults

deal with aging problems with parents or other aging family members. Aging is a topic that touches all of

us. We encourage everyone to attend this important event. Dinner will be provided and Jason's talk will follow. Several of us have heard Jason speak and we were fascinated by his charm, wit, and engaging infor-mation. He is proof that this topic is not morbid or depressing but is vitally important. This is a gift each of us owes to our families! Please sign up in the narthex so that we can anticipate numbers for the meal. Dinner will begin at 5:30 PM at a cost of $5 per person and Jason's talk will begin at 6:30 in the sanctuary. The Stephen Ministry Team

Presbyterian Counseling Center CENTERPOINT

We are all familiar with phrases such as “live each day to the fullest”, “recognize the blessings in life”, “just be happy”, or “think happy thoughts and you will be happy”. These are just a few examples of statements that are intended to be supportive and encouraging. For the person struggling with depression this is an impossible way to think. There is no joy in life, happiness cannot be experienced, blessings are difficult to recog-nize. Saying those encouraging words to someone who is depressed can make them feel even worse. People who are depressed often feel like it’s their fault. They may feel they just aren’t trying hard enough, have a negative attitude or should just make up their mind to be happy. Some often wonder if their faith is not deep or strong enough or if their prayers are inadequate. Many even wonder if perhaps God is punishing them. To truly help someone suffering from depression, help them understand depression is not their fault and sheer will will not make it go away. Depression is a common illness that is quite treatable. Encourage them with helpful words by urging them to seek treatment. Call 452-7370, and visit the Center: www.presbyteriancounselingcenter.org and www.smhealing.org Ann C. Thacker,
