How many members are there in your family? I come from a small family of three. Being an only child, I feel a little lonely at times. My father is very strict and particular about moral values. From him, I have learnt to be a responsible and disciplined leader. My mother is caring and supportive. She has a pair of serving hands and often guides me to be a better and more proactive role model. 2. How do you like to spend time with your family? On a typical day, the moment I enjoy most is meal time as we will get to share our experiences of the day with one another. I also enjoy travelling with my parents during the school holidays. 3. What qualities do you look for in a friend? I seek true friends who are helpful and caring. Such friends will stand by me when I need help, not leave me in the lurch. 4. If you could relive your school experience, what would you do differently? I will try to be more active in creating a more conducive learning environment for my fellow classmates, especially when the teacher is teaching. My classmates should not be talking at the same time as we have to respect our teachers. 5. Which subject(s) pose the greatest challenge for you? I find the most challenging subject to be English but I am determined to put in more effort to improve both my written and spoken English. 6. What do you see as your major strengths? I think I am a good team player. I work well with most people in a team and I like to help them when they are in need. 7. What is your greatest weakness and what have you done to try to overcome it? I am not firm enough with schoolmates who are not co-operative. If my efforts cannot improve the situation, I will bring the issue to the attention of the teacher in-charge and let him/her follow up. 8. What is your greatest challenge as the Head Prefect of the school? It is the challenge of motivating fellow prefects to work as a team towards a common goal and resolving conflicts that arise among them. 9. Describe your most rewarding school experience. The most rewarding experience this year was the leadership camp that I had helped to plan. I feel satisfied that the camp was an enjoyable and meaningful one and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teachers and student leaders for making this camp successful. 10. Greetings and salutations from the new editorial team of CTP’s very own SPARKLE!

We’re excited to launch a sparkling new issue filled with photographs, illustrations, and writings by our pupils! Anchored on the theme of Character Development, this all-new issue will shine a spotlight on an exclusive interview with our head prefect by our very own budding pupil journalists. Look out for our pupils’ witty illustrations and writings peppered throughout the issue.

For those of us who are in need of some good advice, be sure to utilise the tools provided by our senior school counsellor and obtain first-hand tips by our regular parent volunteer through her parenting journey.

All good Singaporeans love a good bargain and receiving freebies so don’t forget to make the centre spread of our yearly school events presented in a photograph montage a poster on the wall as a memento of all those memories lived in the first half of 2014!

Live well. Sparkle on.

CCe!Unpacking

Our Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat, once said, “CCE is going to be the hardest subject to teach. It will require conviction: every teacher in every school needs to take it seriously.” You wonder if the task ahead is too challenging for teachers in Clementi Primary School. Thankfully, the groundwork has been done over the years and we have adopted a whole-school approach to CCE. CCE in Clementi Primary School cuts across all subjects and permeates our pupils’ everyday school experience. While we have highlighted key areas of CCE in the diagram below, there is still so much more that has yet to be unpacked! In 2014 and beyond, we will forge ahead, taking bold strides to mould our pupils to be exemplary in character, and to grow up to be concerned citizens and active contributors.Mrs. Jennifer Chan

Parenting as a journey, not a destination.

Have you wondered what Character and Citizenship Education looks like in Clementi Primary School?

Dear Parents of Clementians, I am always very tickled by this comic strip detailing the different styles of parenting.

In the 1960s, Developmental Psychologist Dr. Diana Baumrind was involved in a child care research study and she conceptualised that there were 4 predominant types of parenting styles – Authoritarian, Authoritative, Permissive, and Uninvolved. Conventional wisdom tells us that there is no one correct way of parenting, and that we need to adjust our parenting styles based on the child’s personality, psycho-social development, and circumstances.

I do find it important that as parents, we are mindful about our preferred style of parenting and we have the capacity to decide if it is a good fit with each of our children. Many times, our preferred style of parenting is largely influenced by the relationships with our own caregivers and their way of parenting us when we were growing up.

To be effective parents, we will need to remind ourselves to find time and space to reflect and think about self-care in parenting. We will realise that when we invest in ourselves emotionally and physically, we can do so much more for our children in their own journey of growing up. Perhaps then, we will also be much more prepared to keep our Evil-Cyborg Parenting Style in check.

Happy parenting!

Sean Ng, Senior School Counsellor

On Empathy, Resilience anda Love for Learningby Mrs. Adeline Lee, Parent Volunteer

Is it possible to develop a love for learning in our demanding, fast-paced school environment? As a mother of 3 girls, I have come to realise that I must release my expectations and dare to swim against the tide if each of my girls is to fulfil her destiny.

I try to give each child time to explore and develop her interest. I find that children in Singapore are shuttled from one class to another, with little free time to explore and eventually engage in meaningful activities that complement their area of gifting.

I believe that discipline and delayed gratification should be inculcated in a child. School and other homework should be tackled first before time is given for play and relaxation. Rewards should be based on the effort put in, not the end result.
