ORDER OF SERVICE.
HYMN.
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.
Beneath the shadows of Thy Throne, Thy saints have dwelt secure
Sufficient is Thine Arm alone, And our defence is sure.
Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.
A thousand ages in Thy sight, Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night, Before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream, Dies at the opening day.
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.
Amen.
SIR THOMAS OLIVER.
REV. A\GUS MAC!)ONALD, M A.
OPENING REMARKS by F. 0. KIRKUP Esq., (President) who will then call upon SIR THOMAS OLIVER to Unveil the Memorial.
UNVEILING CEREMONY BY SIR THOMAS OLIVER.
Dedication by the REV. ANGUS MACDONALD M.A., Vicar of Chopwell.
DEDICATORY PRAYERS.
tN the faith of Jesus Christ, we dedicate this Memorial to the Glory of J God and in memory of his servants who have laid down their lives on behalf of their Country ; in the Name of the Father and of the Son, and
of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
O Merciful God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the - - resurrection and the Life ; in Whom whosoever believeth shall live, though he die; and whosoever liveth and helieveth in Him, shall not die eternally; Who also hath taught us, by His Holy Apostle, Saint Paul, not to he sorry, as men without hope, for them that sleep in Him; we meekly beseech Thee, 0 Father, to raise us from the death of Sin, unto
the life of righteousness; that when we shall depart this life, we may rest in Him, as our hope is, these our brethren do; and that, at the General Resurrection in the last day, we may be found acceptable in Thy sight, and receive that blessing, which Thy well-beloved Son shall then - .1
pronounce to all that love and hear Thee saying, "Come ye blessed children of My Father, receive the Kingdom prepared for you from the
beginning of the World"; Grant this we beseech Thee, 0 merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer.
Amen.
Almighty God, we commend to Thy loving protection the souls of Thy sons who gave their lives for us, may Thy love and blessing crown their self-sacrifices in the home beyond and may the light of Thy Countenance shine for ever on all Thy faithful soldiers and servants, through Jesus
Christ, our Lord. Amen.
The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Love of God and the Fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

HYMN.
Abide with me ; fast falls the eventide, The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide,
When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, 0 abide with me.
Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day, Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away,
Change and decay in all around I see, 0 Thou who changest not, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour— What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord abide with me!
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless: Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness,
Where is death's sting? where grave thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies;
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; In life, in death, 0 Lord, abide with me!
Amen.

At a meeting held on June 15th, 1922, it was decided that the Memorial should take the form of a soldier on a pedestal, and the site should be in front of Chopwell Social Club and Institute.
Nearly £400 was promised at the meeting and an appeal to the Public was attended with gratifying results. The Consett Iron Company also responded liberally in them atter of materials and also gave a handsome donation.
DESCRIPTION.
The Memorial which stands in front of the Chopwell Workmen's Social Club and Institute, takes the form of a soldier, in fighting order, resting on his arms reversed, on a pedestal, and was designed, supplied and erected, by A. & F. Manuelle, of 4 & 6 Throgmorton Avenue, London E.C.2. The Memorial is built of Aberdeen grey granite. The figure is 6' and the pedestal is 10' 6". The total height is about 17' high.
INSCRIPTION ON FRONT OF STONE.
PRO PATRIA. In Memory of the Men
of CHOPWELL
who laid down their lives for Liberty, Honour, and'Justice, and in defence of King and Country in the Great War,
also in grateful recognition of all who served. 1914-19l8.
"We are the dead if ye break faith with us we shall not sleep".
CHOPWELL AND THE GREAT WAR.
Within the narrow limits of a Souvenir Handbook, it is impossible to detail the part Chopwell played in the Great War.
On the outbreak of the War, when the call for men was made, 1,100 of Chopwell's gallant men volunteered, and were prepared to suffer terrible hardships, and even death, in defence of their King and Country.
I.jnfortunately, 205 of those splendid men sacrificed their lives in this great struggle, and as a small token of our gratitude to them, this Memorial has been raised, and will stand for generations to come, as a visible appreciation of their services and sacrifices.
