AWARENESSŸ World No Tobacco Day was celebrated on 31 May 2014 in

partnership with the Department of Health and local municipalities through interactive workshops. The focus was on educating traditional healers on the effects of smokeless tobacco on their health.

Ÿ A total of 28 companies were reached during our Anti-Tobacco Campaign in May 2014.

Ÿ In July 2014, the CANSA Kimberley Care Centre ran a SunSmart and Anti-tobacco drive at the Griquas Cricket Union during the De Beers Winter Week, helping to educate the youth.

Ÿ As part of CANSA Care Week in August 2014, the CANSA Cape Metro staff and volunteers distributed care packages to caregivers at the Tygerberg Hospital, Panorama Oncology, Groote Schuur and Red Cross Children’s Hospital, reaching 875 people.

Ÿ CANSA East London Care Centre hosted a cancer survivors event on 8 September 2014, attended by 136 survivors, with a talk presented by a survivor of 37 years.

Ÿ On 15 October 2014, 180 people took part in the ‘Splash of Pink’ launch event for CANSA Relay For Life Langeberg held in Robertson.

Ÿ A total of 43 clinical breast examinations were performed and four health talks delivered at the out-patients unit of the Oudtshoorn Hospital during October 2014.

Ÿ The International Maloof Money Cup Event (World Championship for skateboarders) took place in Kimberley in October 2014, where the CANSA team and volunteers managed two health stations, promoting playing safely in the sun while also providing free sunscreen.

Ÿ As part of the Men’s Health Campaign during November 2014, the regional staff ran health awareness activities in partnership with local clinics and local media.

Ÿ On 28 January 2015, 45 role players gathered at the inaugural Phakamisa Prostate Indaba held in Upington. Guest Speaker, prof Riana Bornman of the University of Pretoria, spoke about prostate cancer and the importance of screening, as well as on research outcomes regarding the increased incidence of urogenital abnormailites.

Ÿ A 5km SunSmart walk took place in Calvinia on 29 January 2015, with the participation of local schools.

Ÿ In partnership with the team from the Kimberley Big Hole, World Cancer Day was celebrated with a special tea for cancer survivors and loved ones. Information was shared on cancer myths and a survivors' membership programme was launched.

Ÿ An organisation called ‘Kos en Fynbos’ started an organic vegetable garden at the CANSA George Care Centre. The vegetables will be used for the patients at the CANSA Irma Bruschi Care Home.

EARLY DETECTION AND SCREENINGŸ Prostate Specific Antigen tests were provided at numerous

workplaces during June and July 2014 in the Cape areas. Ÿ In August 2014, the CANSA Cape Metro Care Centre team

took part in the Employee Wellness Drive at Clicks’ head office, with the focus on early detection and screening for breast and cervical cancer.

Ÿ On Women’s Day (9 August 2014), the CANSA team, in partnership with the OTSM Frog Centre home-based carers in

Mitchell’s Plain, provided clinical breast examinations, as well as blood pressure and glucose tests to 76 women at the Artscape Humanity Festival.

Ÿ The Annual Rooibos Festival took place in Clanwilliam on 4 October 2014. CANSA hosted a SunSmart exhibition and screened 11 people with the FotoFinder mole mapping dermoscope device. The festival attracts 1 300 athletes who participate in swimming, cycling and walking.

Ÿ The Mobile Health Clinic was used during CANSA's Women's Health Campaign in partnership with the Department of Health, reaching women in remote farm areas and providing 285 Pap smears and 330 clinical breast examinations.

Ÿ CANSA conducted 37 Pap smears, 26 clinical breast examinations and 136 FotoFinder tests at the Joe Morolong Hospital in Kimberley region, in partnership with the Department of Health, during November 2014.

Ÿ The CANSA Oudtshoorn Care Centre hosted an awareness day in January 2015 for the staff of Oudtshoorn Hospital where they did seven Pap smears and 55 clinical breast examinations.

Ÿ On World Cancer Day on 4 February 2015, a total of 31 ladies received their first clinical breast examinations at the Gondwana Lodge in the Southern Cape.

Ÿ A total of 108 Pap smears, 82 Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests and 40 clinical breast examinations were delivered in Holomisa and Kwanobuhule in the Western region as part of an outreach using the Mobile Health Clinic.

CARE AND SUPPORTŸ International Cancer Survivors’ Day was celebrated in June at

Ward J2 at the Frere Hospital where the CANSA East London Care Centre team distributed 27 knitted blankets to cancer survivors during the weekly support group meeting.

Ÿ The Westridge ‘Hoping is Coping’ Support group in Mitchells Plain celebrated its first anniversary in July 2014 – each meeting enjoys the attendance of about 20 members.

Ÿ The CANSA Oudtshoorn Care Centre held a lymphoedema clinic in July 2014 resulting in three new patients receiving lymphoedema treatment.

Ÿ In January 2015, singer and 2010 Idols winner Elvis Blue, visited the CANSA Irma Bruschi Care Home in George to sing for the cancer patients.

Ÿ In February 2015, the CANSA Kimberley Care Centre partnered with Dr Osie-Fofie, Head of Oncology at Kimberley Hospital, and gave information sessions at a five-day programme on chemo and radiation hosted by the Department of Science and Technology at the Galeswe Campus, reaching 350 pupils.

Ÿ In George, the Care Centre provides lymphoedema treatment to 16 patients each month.

Ÿ Equara Health assist cancer patients by paying 70% of their stay at the CANSA Irma Bruschi Care Home.

Ÿ The CANSA Kimberley Care Centre was acknowledged with an Honorary Award at the Chief Executive Officer Awards function of Kimberley Hospital for the selfless contributions made to the patients at Kimberley Hospital.

Ÿ Hunters Hotel, a local business in George, sponsored the amount of R3 000 to purchase adult nappies for cancer patients in the George area.

Ÿ The CANSA social worker from the CANSA Port Elizabeth Care Centre works closely with the staff of the Children Oncology Unit at the provincial hospital, as well as a volunteer assisting the parents and children referred for treatment.

FUND DEVELOPMENTŸ Sponsored by Shoprite Checkers, Cuppa for CANSA launches

took place at CANSA's care centres in Kimberley and Port Elizabeth on 6 June 2104. Each centre received R18 000 towards its CANSA TLC programmes.

Ÿ In July 2014, the Ashton Liaison Committee held an event to raise awareness in the Ashton community about the service offered by CANSA and also managed to raise R5 103.

Ÿ In 2014, as part of Women’s Day, a Women’s Health event was hosted by the Kenilworth Race Course. It was attended by 300 people and raised R140 000. Rayghanah Cassiem, a 10-year-old survivor, shared her journey and highlighted the importance of early detection.

Ÿ In July 2014, cancer survivor, Fred Meintjes and his wife Janey ventured across South Africa in their Ford Ranger and Tourer SP caravan, raising awareness and R32 000 for the CANSA Cape Metro Care Centre. They travelled 7 317km from Cape Town to the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga.

Ÿ On 13 September 2014, the Rooi Rose tea was hosted in Cape Town at the Stellenbosch Town Hall, reaching over 430 people and raising R109 000.

Ÿ New Balance Sport Club presented CANSA with a cheque of R10 000. It was raised at the Dudley's Trail Run, held in October 2014 in Brackenfell, with 642 runners participating.

Ÿ The CANSA Oudtshoorn Care Centre opened a charity shop called ‘Blue Moon’ in 2014, with the generous support of the community and surrounding regions.

Ÿ A total of 199 Sanlam Cancer Challenge club and regional competitions took place in the regions, which helped raiseR1 126 419.

Ÿ The following Relay communities raised a total of R4 775 445: Beaufort West, George, Mossel Bay, Garden Route, Oudsthoorn, Hessequa, Port Elizabeth, Jeffreys Bay, East London, Langeberg, Paarl, Witzenberg, Caledon, Stellenbosch, Worcester, Overstrand, Swellendam, Mamre/Atlantis/Pella, Helderberg, Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain, SA Navy, Vredenburg, Malmesbury, Hantam/Karoo, Cederberg, Porterville, Keimoes, Postmasburg, Kakamas, Kathu, Keimoes, Springbok, Kuruman, Kimberley and Upington.

Ÿ The Global Relay For Life Heroes of Hope survivorship initiative involves the selection of ‘Heroes of Hope’ from the global Relay participating countries. Cancer survivors Cheryl de Wit (Bonnievale) and Nellie Snyman (Stellenbosch) were awarded this great honour in 2014.

Ÿ The 2014 Global Spirit of Relay For Life Staff Award was presented by the American Cancer Society to Christa Claassen, CANSA Relay For Life Coordinator in the Boland region.

Ÿ A high tea with the theme ‘Bollywood’ was held on14 February 2015, raising R22 000.

Ÿ In February 2014, the regions in Southern Business Unit hosted Hollard Daredevil Runs in George and Cape Town, raising R21 900.

Ÿ The communities from the Southern Business Unit generously supported the annual Shavathon campaign in March 2015, raising R866 141 at 37 shopping centres and 83 workplaces.

A group of fourth-year medical students from the

University of Cape Town screened 68 people in the

Elsies River community with a ‘smokerlyser’ (a device

that measures carbon monoxide levels in the lungs of

the person who blows into it) as part of their anti-

tobacco research efforts. Health information was

provided through CANSA’s website and fact sheets.

PARTNERSHIPSThrough our media and radio talks, we carried out 168 radio talks and enjoyed 453 printed

media articles that carried various health and CANSA messages.

HEALTH AWARENESS BY NUMBERSŸ 164 379 people were reached with 2 913 talks on cancer

awareness.

Ÿ 24 762 people were reached through 248 cancer awareness exhibitions, health days and health camps.

Ÿ 17 568 people were reached with 250 talks on screening and early detection.

Ÿ 4 376 people were reached through 120 screening and early detection exhibitions.

Ÿ A total of 21 992 youth were educated at 66 schools and educational facilities.

Ÿ 49 478 cancer awareness leaflets were distributed.

SCREENING BY NUMBERSWe conducted screening – some in partnership with the Department of Health (DoH) at Care Centres, as well as in remote areas using our Mobile Health Clinics.

Ÿ 1 932 Pap smears for cervical cancer plus 2 706 with DoH.

Ÿ 4 244 Clinical Breast Examinations and 1 630 with DoH.

Ÿ 2 680 Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests to detect prostate abnormalities.

Ÿ 69 Skin cancer examinations and 267 FotoFinder examinations.

Ÿ Assessed 72 people to determine their healthy lifestyle risk.

Ÿ Conducted 153 HIV rapid tests - finger prick blood tests.

Ÿ Performed 105 blood glucose tests for diabetes.

On average 8% abnormalities were detected in the total number of screenings done

SUPPORT BY NUMBERSŸ Patient care provided to 39 810 cancer survivors and their

loved ones.Ÿ 9 680 survivors were cared for at home (home-based care).Ÿ 1 004 patients were accommodated at the four CANSA Care

Homes (13 063 bed-days).Ÿ 50 support groups established and maintained - attended by

3 755 survivors.Ÿ Medical equipment and other assistive devices were made

available to 1 498 people.Ÿ 24 814 patients were supported at oncology clinics whilst

receiving cancer treatment.Ÿ 294 beneficiaries received care and support as part of the

CANSA TLC programme.
