RESPONDING TO COMMUNITY NEEDS

The City of Lincoln recently introduced a new resource to those in need in our community and those

wanting to serve through the new Aging Partners program called NeighborLNK. The goal of the program is to serve seniors (60+) as well as persons with disabilities in the community (“neighbors”) who are homebound as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

NeighborLNK facilitates personal connections by directly linking volunteers with such individuals.

• If you’re a senior (60+) or a person with disabilities and interested in being paired with a volunteer in this program to receive services, you may apply by calling 402-441-7575 to request a neighbor application packet, or you may apply by downloading and filling out the packet and emailing it to [email protected]. There is no cost to participate in the program.

• If you’re 19 years or older and are interested in serving as a volunteer in this program, you may apply by filling out the volunteer application packet and emailing the completed packet to [email protected]

The City of Lincoln has also compiled available resources for residents and businesses during the COVID-19 crisis, as well as ways you can safely serve and support your community. For more information, including information on the latest public health situation, go to covid19.lincoln.ne.gov.

TEMPLE GARDENS

We had a small group of gardeners on Sunday, May 17 and managed to get lots of weeding done. Thanks to Barb Straus, Elaine Monnier, and Marcia Wallen!

Our next garden work day will be Sunday June 14 from 10:00-11:00 am. We will do a number of gardening tasks to keep things growing, including weeding, trimming, raking, and sweeping. Please bring your garden tools and some of us will bring extras. We can easily socially distance, especially if we work in different areas, but please wear a face mask. If the forecast is very warm, we will move the start time a little earlier...

Thanks in advance for your support! Our group of garden helpers has dwindled and we really do need more people to help keep our grounds looking great. Let Ellin Siegel know if you can join in on this June Sunday.

JEWISH WOMEN’S LUNCH

Five of us met last Tuesday at Barb Barron's home, counting Mark and Celia, Barb's mom.

We will meet again on Tuesday, June 16 at 12:00 pm in Zoya Zeman's backyard at 2932 South 46th Street. She will set up tables for appropriate social

distancing and we will bring our own food. There may also be a dessert!

Let Deborah Swearingen (402-476-7528) know if you

plan to attend and if you need a ride.

JEWISH BOOK CLUB

The book chosen for the June 21, 2020 meeting is Hannah’s War by Jan Eliasberg. This book was published in March, 2020. Lincoln City Libraries does not have “Hannah’s War” yet.

Happy reading all…“See” you at the next Book Club!

FEDERATION

A hearty Todah Rabah to everyone who supported the Jewish Federation of Lincoln during Give to Lincoln Day 2020. Your generosity means that we can continue our mission - inspiring generosity, improving lives, and strengthening our Jewish community within a framework of Jewish values

The Federation appreciates your support in these very challenging times and we encourage everyone to be safe, be healthy and be kind to yourselves and to others.

CLINIC WITH A HEART

Since 2012, the South Street Temple has been a sponsoring congregation for Clinic with a Heart, a free urgent care clinic that serves people without health insurance. Along with our partner congregation, St. Paul United Methodist Church, our Temple team provides volunteer services to patients of all ages and backgrounds in an atmosphere of kindness and respect.

Our members and friends have served as physicians, nurses, lab technicians, office volunteers, and support staff. We also contribute personal care items and over the counter medications. To sustain this project takes the work of our volunteers and our financial commitment. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Barb Straus at [email protected].

FEEDING THE KIDS AT F STREET

This is a great opportunity to ensure children are not going hungry. Our Lincoln Jewish community helps to plan meals, find volunteers, and serve a meal to the youth at F Street once a month.. Our Jewish youth and volunteers really enjoy interacting with the children at F Street. If you would like to donate funds to this program and help continue this mitzvah, please contact Elaine Monnier at [email protected] or call Peter Mullin at 402-435-8004.

We are collecting non-perishable food items that can be packaged and sent home to our kids and families while the center is under pandemic-required gathering restrictions

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CONGREGATION PRESIDENTS

In response to the vandalism of the South Street Temple in January and elsewhere in Lincoln last week, and "as an expression of our community's shared values," Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird recently announced that her administration is proposing an ordinance to the City Council that would strengthen the city's ability to respond to acts of hate. You can see some highlights of that news conference here. There is also a summary here. On Monday, June 8 at 3:00 pm, the Lincoln City Council will hear comments on the Hate Intimidation ordinance which is designed to create a new offense under the City Code called "hate intimidation" that could be charged to an individual who commits a violation of a city ordinance with the intent to intimidate a person due to that person's (actual or perceived) status, including race, color, religion, physical or mental disability, national origin, age, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. The Hate Intimidation Ordinance would:

• Allow the city prosecutor to charge perpetrators of hate crimes in the city of Lincoln. • Apply to additional types of crimes beyond those included in state statutes, crimes such as destruction of property

and disturbing the peace. • Demonstrate that hate has no home in Lincoln and that every resident belongs here.

Your voice is critical! Together we can make sure that all Lincolnites are safe. • You can contact Nicholette Seigfreid ([email protected]) to let us know your congregation or

organization would like to officially sign on as a supporter • You can contact your City Council Member here. • You can also submit a comment to the entire City Council here: [email protected]

Join with us in supporting this ordinance today,

Nicholette Seigfreid & Seth Harris Presidents, South Street Temple & Congregation Tifereth Israel

LOCAL FOOD IN URBAN LINCOLN

Join your South Lincoln neighbors for the first F Street Neighborhood Church Farmer's Market from 4:30 to 7:00 pm on June 9! When we confront huge problems like systemic racism or global pandemics, it’s easy to feel powerless. Sometimes it's more effective to focus on something you can control and ask, “What can I do now to make an impact?” The F St Neighborhood Market exists to support the community, provide access to healthy, locally grown food, and develop the community's workforce. The F St Neighborhood Market is partnering with other local organizations to make our neighborhood a great place to live, work, and play. You can join with us in many ways! We're looking for more vendors to sell at our market. You can also volunteer your time or

just come to the market and enjoy being with your neighbors at 1302 F Street. The market will run on Tuesday afternoons throughout the summer.
