Year 1 - Week beginning 13th July

**Many of the resources attached below can be viewed on your device and different levels of work are provided. Please select the relevant work for your child before printing to save ink.

Reading Tasks Access BugClub online using your login and complete the activities below. Please contact us at [email protected] if you are struggling to access BugClub. These books are all set according to your child’s reading level are will provide access to a wider range or stories at home.

1. Retell the story in as much detail as you can after you have read it. Explain whether you like the story or not giving examples from the text to explain your feelings.

2. Ask 3 questions to an adult or sibling listening to you read to check they are listening carefully. Make sure you know the answers too!

3. Describe a character using 3 words to a sibling or adult. Can they use your clues to guess the character?

Reading comprehension – This week’s reading comprehension also revises the ‘ay’ sound in phonics. Read the text and answer the questions provided below.

Don’t forget to also read your own books for pleasure throughout the day. I know many of you enjoy reading or listening to a book at bedtime.

Spellings – Choose another 5 common exception words from the list provided and practise. If your child is still struggling with some of the spellings from last week, include these within your next 5.

Common exception words are just some of the words that children are expected to be able to read and spell by the end of each year. These words are often referred to as tricky words as they do not always follow phonetic rules and therefore can be more challenging.

You could practise by, writing these words in different colours and styles, writing these words in sentences or writing these words in different materials e.g. shaving foam, water on a wall or sand.

Writing Tasks –

Monday 13th July – Handwriting End of KS1 expectations for handwriting. Your child is on their journey to meet these expectations by the end of Year 2. Exceeding (EXC) – To meet working towards and expected expectations and use the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters correctly. Expected (EXP) – To meet working towards expectations and form capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower-case letters. Children at the expected level are expected to join most of the time.Working towards (WTS) –To form lower-case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place and form lower-case letters of the correct size relative to one another in some of their writing.

Below in the worksheet section are some handwriting practise sheets. Some focus on forming individual letters correctly(WTS) and others build up to writing words with individual letters formed correctly(WTS/EXP) and joining(EXP/EXC). They all encourage children to form letters in the correct

direction, starting and finishing in the right place and forming letters of the correct size in relation to one another. Please choose the appropriate resource for your child’s handwriting ability. If you feel your child needs additional handwriting practise, please print off multiple copies and practise little and often.

Tuesday 14th July– PlanningToday you will be planning your own version of Gorilla. You can change a little or a lot. Some of the things you might like to change are, the main character, the Gorilla and/or the place the child wants to visit. Try to keep the feelings throughout the story and the main structure the same to help you write cohesively. Included in the worksheet section below is a story planning template (story board). Once you have decided the elements you want to change use the planning template to draw the different parts of the story. Write a short sentence underneath each picture to explain what is happening throughout your story. If you would prefer to draw a story map instead, this is okay. Remember your story needs a beginning middle and an end.Beginning – Introduce the characters and setting with lots of lovely descriptive detail.Middle – The problemEnd – The conclusion

Wednesday 15th July– Writing your story (rough)

Today is a chance to write the story in rough. Enjoy the freedom of writing and make your story as descriptive as possible. Get yourself some lined paper and a pencil. With your plan in front of you, have some fun being creative. Write your story but as you work your way through try and keep in mind those grammatical skills you practised yesterday.

Thursday 16th July– Writing your story (editing)

If you did not manage to finish your story yesterday, finish it off first.

Follow the steps below and make changes with a colour pen or pencil on top of your writing.

1. Read your story out loud. This helps to make sure your story makes sense and whether any words or punctuation is missing.

2. Read your story out loud again. We very rarely pick up all the errors the first time we read. Repeat this until you can no longer find anything to change.

3. Check spelling of words that can be sounded out phonetically or are on the Year 1 common exception word list.

Friday 17th July– Writing your story (neat)

Your story should now be complete. You have created, edited and now we would like you to present your story in your best handwriting. The hardest work is out of the way. Copy your story being careful not forget any changes you made yesterday. Today your concentration should be on your handwriting. Remember to write each capital and lower case letter the correct size and orientation. Put spaces of an appropriate size between words. If you are confident to do so, join your letters together. Use a rubber if you make any errors to keep your presentation as neat as possible.
