The 17 year old daughter of Chris and Amy Sutherland plays mid- field and forward for the Mavericks. Along with her teammates, the Mavericks are aiming to win a state championship. Blake has built an impressive resume over the last few years, filled with both 3v3 and full team success. She has an affinity for the 3v3 game and has traveled across the country to play. “My favorite form of soccer is 3v3. It’s faster paced and goals are more frequent. A couple of years back my 3v3 team went to the National Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. We won the Championship but the most intense game was the semi-final. We won with a golden goal in overtime.” Her full squad resume has also been filled with big time victories. “For many years I have been a part of a team that has consistently played at the highest level of soccer. As a team we won State Cup, Jefferson Cup, and the Disney Jr. Showcase and ranked, at one point, the #1 team in the nation.” Blake enjoys the intensity she finds on the soccer field. “The most exciting thing is playing in high inten- sity games with and against the best players and com- ing out on top. Also nothing can beat traveling and experiencing the highs and lows of soccer with your best friends.” The same level of soccer intensity follows Blake inside the classroom where she carries a 4.95 grade point average. Blake is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta. She is also very active in community service projects, especially the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “We held a carwash to raise funds for JDRF at my school. Emilie SmithProvidence Day School senior basketball player Emilie Smith has been named the winner of the Prep Spotlight Athlete of the Week Award, Presented by Tutoring Club. The 18 year old daughter of Vera McDermott and Steve Smith achieved outstand-ing academic success in high school and earned the opportunity to attend Ole Miss for her college education.

Emilie was a member of four consecutive NCISAA 3A State championship teams and this year she was also chosen to play in the 1A-3A All Star Game at the end of the season. Emilie has enjoyed her time competing in sports for Providence Day School.

“Participating in sports has taught me that there are always second chances. If I mess up in a drill in practice, chances are I will be faced with the same situation eventually. I am able to then use what I learned from the first mistake and get it right the second time. Knowing this has helped me learn from mistakes I have made as a kid and young student. Sports have also taught me to rely on practice and effort. Nothing can be accomplished without creating great habits and focus. Learning this early on through sports has helped my efforts in the classroom.”

Inside the classroom, Emilie has recorded a 4.16 grade point average and she is a mem-ber of the National Honor Society. She also is involved with the Students of Service Club which partners with Sow Much Good, an organization that grows food to sell in market at reasonable prices. Emilie also works with a non-profit organization that her friend, Reilly Alridge, started at the end of their sophomore year. The non-profit is called Happy Walls and they have painted a few murals around town to brighten up some wait-ing rooms. The most recent project is taking place at Winterfield Elementary School.

Congratulations to Emilie Smith for being named the winner of the Prep Spotlight Ath-lete of the Week Award, Presented by Tutoring Club.

The Shoeless Enterprises Leadership Award

Maya HouserMarvin Ridge High School junior soccer player Maya Houser has been named the winner of the Shoeless Enterprises Leader of the Week Award. The 17 year old daughter of Stephen and Christy Houser plays defender, midfield and forward for the Mavericks Soccer Team. Maya has been named a team captain four years in a row and has been a varsity starter since her ninth grade season.

In addition to her soccer success, Maya is working hard to make an impact on the community with her leader-ship of a book drive. Together with a friend this year, they collected over 1800 books to donate to children at a school with low reading test scores.

“My goal is to leave a lasting impact on my community, with the Book Drive to become a lasting thing. Where even long after I have graduated, the Marvin Ridge High School and surrounding towns will continue to take care of those who have less resources and opportunities. Having access to books is a life changer. By opening a book it can transport you to worlds away, spark new ideas and inspire you in ways you never even thought possible. I want every child to have the same access to books that I have been fortunate enough to have my entire life.”

Maya is an outstanding student with a 4.96 grade point average. She was re-cently elected as the President of the National Honor Society for next year. She is also a member of the French Club, Mu Theta and Rho Kappa. This summer Maya will be spending six weeks at Carnegie Mellon University participating in a STEM program.

Maya is an outstanding leader for our community and we congratulate her for be-ing selected as the winner of the Shoeless Enterprises Leader of the Week.

James shipley

Weddington High School lacrosse player James Shipley has been named the Carefree Boat Club Rising Star of the Week. The sophomore son of James and Tammy Shipley plays midfield for the Warriors Team. He was also a key member of the state championship winning football team for Weddington this past fall. In that game, James was selected as the Offensive Most Valuable Player.

Back on the lacrosse field, James is working hard to help his team contend for a state championship. In

fact, he states that his goal for the remainder of high school is; “to win three state championships in lacrosse and two more in football.”

The success on the lacrosse field caught the attention of the University of Pennsylvania, a member institution of the Ivy League. James was offered the chance to make an early commitment to the school’s lacrosse team. He ac-cepted the offer and is now committed to the school following his graduation in the spring of 2019.

“The University of Pennsylvania is beautiful and I fell in love from the beginning. It has a great education, great lacrosse, great coaching, and a great commu-nity.”

The fact that James is an outstanding student was part of the reason Penn was so attracted to the lacrosse player. James recorded a 4.401 grade point aver-age his freshman year, obtaining a rank of fifth in his class. He is also a mem-ber of the Spanish Honor Society and helps out in the community by assisting with the coaching of a youth 7 on 7 football team. Congratulations to James Shipley for all of his accomplishments to date and for being named the Carefree Boat Club Rising Star of the Week.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH BRYCE CHEEK

Weddington High School junior lacrosse player Bryce Cheek has been a force inside goal for the Warriors. The son of Ronnie and Kim Cheek fell in love with the game from his first time on the field. Bryce also is on the wrestling team at Weddington High School. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Bryce.

When did you begin playing lacrosse and why?“I have been playing since I was 10 years old. I started playing because I used to play baseball but I would see High School kids playing lacrosse on the field next to us. Once I saw that, I was im-mediately interested in the game and I asked my dad to buy me a lacrosse stick.”

What do you consider as your top athletic accomplishments?“Being contacted by Division 1 coaches.” What made you choose the goalie position?“I started playing midfielder but couldn’t get a lot of playing time because there were so many of us playing midfield. So, my coach talked to me about playing goalie because I was pretty athletic but I also had good size on me.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “I have a 3.83 unweighted and a 4.5 weighted. I’m in Math Honors Society, DECA Club, Mentors Club, Food for Thoughts Club, and Engineering Club. For honors, I’m in National Beta Society and Math Honors Society. Also, as a freshman, I won the Teachers Choice Award for math and I was Math Merit Recipient for my math class.”

What do you hope to accomplish or what goal do you hope to reach before you graduate from high school? “I hope to attend a college with a very good engineering program.” Are you involved in any community service projects?“My club lacrosse team and I donated and collect used lacrosse gear for kids who can’t afford to pay for the gear but love the game of lacrosse. I also help tutor High School students in math. As a freshman, my school lacrosse team and I would help clean up the football stadium after a football game.”

This photo back in 2006 started it all for the South Charlotte Sports Report. I gathered up a bunch of friends to appear on the cover for the first ever South Charlotte Sports Re-port newspaper. So many of these kids have now gone on to graduate from high school and college.

Covenant Day School senior soccer player Lexie Lawson is nearing the end of her prep career at Covenant Day School. The 17 year old daughter of Robert and Kimberly Lawson plays center and right defense for the Lions. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Lexie. When did you begin playing soccer?“I have played soccer since I was young. It has always been a sport I have really enjoyed and loved being a part of.”

What is your favorite sports memory?“Either playing Cannon last year having previously tied them. With one minute left in the game we had a foul

kick in the top 3rd of the field. We all lined up on the 18 yard box, and one of our teammates launched the per-fect ball over the top of their defense into the box where it was knocked in by another player giving us a 2-1 lead against Cannon. Or this season we were able to play Carmel Christian, a school down the street outside of our conference. A bunch of the girls from this team are in my small group at church it was a great experience to play along side of them and compete with them. It was a neat thing for two schools with a common goal of glorifying God compete against each other while being united in purpose.”

What do you consider as your top athletic accomplishments?“As a sophomore, I was a captain of both soccer and vol-leyball. Our volleyball team made it to the state champi-onship last year and received second place.”

What do you hope to accomplish or what goal do you hope to reach before you graduate from high school?“As a team, we have decided to work intentionally on investing in each other and our relationships within the team and the program. I think for me as a senior this is something I would personally like to focus on in my final few weeks on the team through building strong relation-ships with not only my peers but also the younger girls. While also learning to appreciate those who have in-vested in me through my journey in the soccer program at school.”

What has participation in sports taught you that has been a big help in other areas of your life?“Having played both volleyball and soccer throughout high school, sports have influenced me tremendously. I have learned how to not only work along side of my team as we strive for a common goal, but also to chal-lenge, encourage, and support each of my teammates individually and personally. Also, I have learned how to play my personal role within the team I am a part of which can vary and shift each season. Developing these abilities has helped me in my friendships and other rela-tionships as well.”

Have you made a college decision?“I am going to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill next year.”

How do you balance sports and academic success?“Finding a good balance between hard work in the classroom and on the field is important to me. I try to spend equal amounts of time on both while also finding time with friends and family.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “I have a 4.93 GPA, and I am in Beta Club and National Honor Society, on high honor roll, and I am also senior class president this year.”

Are you involved in any community service projects?“Every Sunday I teach 4th grade Sunday School. I lead a small group of girls each week and once in a while I lead large group for the entire class. I also am blessed to be a counselor for church camp each summer with the kids I teach.”

The Marvin Ridge Girls Soccer Team has been named as the Sonny’s BBQ Team of the Week. The Mavericks, in addition to having an outstanding soccer program are also very active in the community. This past weekend the entire Marvin Ridge Girls soccer team worked together to raise $7,000 dollars for the JDRF of Greater Western Carolinas OneWalk. They were the 5th place Corporate Fundraising Team. Many of the girls have family mem-bers and friends living with type 1 diabetes and they wanted to join together to give back to the community. The Marvin Ridge marching band also participated in the event by playing along the walk route.

In addition, Alex McGowan, a Marvin Ridge Junior with type 1 diabetes had her own walk team. She and several students raised $6,200 for the cause.

This is the soccer program’s second year participating in the JDRF OneWalk and they more than doubled the amount they raised last year!

South Mecklenburg High School tennis player Stephen Perle has been named the Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances Community Heroes Award Winner. The 17 year old junior Sabres Tennis player is the son of Scott and Pam Perle. He has been playing tennis since first trying the sport at age nine. Stephen enjoys all the time spent with his Sabres teammates as the travel across the area competing.

Stephen hopes to help his team to a state playoff win before graduating from South Meck. The team is working hard every day to improve and move closer to this goal.

Stephen is proud of all he has learned through participation in high school sports.“Above all else, participation in high school sports has instilled in me, a heightened degree of discipline and resilience that I believe would

have been unattainable without sports. In other areas of my life, in and out of the classroom, discipline has allowed me to conduct myself properly in front of other people and has landed me great opportunities following interview settings, such as scholarships and internships. Being resilient in all aspects of life has allowed me to be more successful and have a better, positive outlook on life. Whether a test grade is not what I expected, or a second serve clips the top of the net, my resilient nature pushes me even harder on the next point or assignment. I have begun to utilize setbacks as a catalyst for future success.”

Inside the classroom Stephen has achieved great success, recording a 5.17 grade point average. He works hard to balance sports and aca-demics and utilizes his free time to get ahead on assignments. Stephen is also a member of the National Honor Society, the Health Occupations Students of America, the National Science and Math Honor Society and the South Meck Ultimate Club.

Inside the community, Stephen just completed a book drive for Montclaire Elementary School. He was able to collect over 500 books to help out at the school. He has also worked on many community service projects with the National Honor Society and volunteered at local hospitals and clinics to gain experience in the health field that he hopes to be a part of one day.

Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances salutes Stephen Perle for his continued commitment serving others in our community. Roddey Player President, Queen City Audio, Video & Appliances
