  • Christmas is just around the corner and another year is almost

gone. We have great times to look forward to in 2013. I am putting

new work together for my classes and catching up on things here at

    home.

The Christmas tree is up and the stockings are hung on the

    fireplace.

I am really looking forward to our South Central Regional meeting

in Norman, Oklahoma next year. We have a very pretty still life

picture to paint in shades of lavender. Then we will be working with

pen-and-ink. You will have your choice from 3 pictures. If you’ve

not worked with pen-and-ink before, it is not hard to do and the

results are immediate. So plan on joining us for 2 fabulous days of

    art.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS. See you soon.

    Carolyn

“Young people today who prefer the later works of Degas and Renoir hardly realize how much of its looser character was due to their failing eyesight.” (William Rothenstein)

    You can start

    making your

    reservations in

    Norman any time

    now. I know

    everyone will be busy

with Christmas this month so if

    you don’t make your reservation

in December, be sure to make it

in January. We have a special

rate so when you call, be sure to

say you are with the South

    Central artists group. We’ll be

    staying at The Courtyard Inn

in Norman again. It is located at

    770 Copperfield Drive and

    the phone number is:

    1-405-701-8900.

Our special room rate is $85.00

+ tax for rooms with 2 queen

    beds. This includes free

    breakfast both Saturday and

Sunday. They have set aside a

block of rooms for us so make

    your reservations early and tell

them you want to be with the

    group.

    PLEASE FILL OUT THE

    REGISTRATION FORM IN

    THE BACK OF THIS

    NEWSLETTER AND SEND

    IT IN AS SOON AS

    POSSIBLE.

This is a very important meeting.

We will have election of officers at

    the meeting. Officers hold office

for two years. So be thinking

about who you want your new

    officers to be.

Many of you know John Gibson who was a TEAM member for many years. Brenda Harris sent a note to say he passed away recently. He was 64 years old. He will be missed by all who knew him.

  • THE 2013 MEETING is just around the corner! Time to start making plans to attend.

A Registration form is included on the last

page of the newsletter. Please send in your

registration and fees as soon as possible. It is

helpful for Carolyn to know how many

canvasses to prepare for our Sunday class.

On Saturday we will be doing a pen-and-ink

picture – your choice of the three pictured

    below:

On Sunday, we will do the following oil

    painting on a 12”x16” canvas:

    “Inspired by Lavender”

“Life obliges me to do something, so I

    paint.” (Rene Magritte)

  • SUPPLY LIST FOR PEN-AND-INK If you don’t have your koh-i-noor rapidograph pens and cleaning systems yet you should order them as soon as possible as art supply stores might not have them in stock if you wait too long.

    ART SUPPLY WAREHOUSE, www.aswexpress.com

    Pen size 00 point .30mm – $23.75 (Order #38-4044) Cleaning system - $18.96 (Order #38-4073) Black ink for later use – 3085-f - $3.75 (Order #38-4040)

    JERRY’S ARTARAMA www.jerrysartarama.com

Prices are the same but if you order from Jerry’s use Order #09240 for the Pen Order #09158 for the Cleaning system Order #34708 for the ink. They also have colored inks for $3.55 each. Carolyn also found the pens on e-bay. The bids start at $45 plus shipping (about $4.00) for a 7-pen set with ink included. This set retails for as much as $150.00 so this is a real bargain. If you are interested in this set go to e-bay and enter “art supplies”. They also have individual pens so you might want to check out this source for your pens and cleaning system before going to ASW or Jerry’s.

SUPPLY LIST FOR OIL PAINTING BRUSHES: ¼” synthetic angle brush Scriptliner 5/8” flat semi-soft synthetic brush Any other small brushes you are comfortable with. You will also need: Paper towels Tabletop Easel Soap to wash your brushes Washout container Palette paper The paint and medium will be furnished by SCR. We will be painting with water soluble oils.

The SILENT AUCTION that takes place every year has proved to be a very popular event with our

members. You can bring anything you want for the auction table. Some members become very creative when coming up with ideas for it. Anything you bring is okay. It does not have to be art related. Proceeds from the silent auction help defray expenses incurred throughout the year.

Also, keep in mind the ARTIST OF THE YEAR contest. It was great to see so many entries last year – the best turnout ever! To compete, you must bring something you have done by yourself. It can be something you’ve done in class and you can get advice, but you must do the painting yourself. You can enter a painting or drawing in Acrylic, Oil, Pen-and-Ink, Pastel or Charcoal. They must be unframed but you can cover the charcoal or pastel with plastic wrap to protect it. Paintings are judged by everyone present. Ballots are passed out at the meeting on Saturday evening and you will be asked to vote for the artwork you think is best. The names of the artists are covered so you will be voting for the painting rather than the artist.

One more thing – ELECTION OF OFFICERS will be held at the meeting Saturday evening. Offices are held for 2 years, so be thinking about who you want to hold the offices of President, Secretary, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor.

“By amusing myself with all these games, all this nonsense, all these picture puzzles, I became famous…I am only a public entertainer who has understood his time” (Pablo Picasso)

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. There will be one more newsletter before the meeting so you will have another chance to get your registration forms in.

  • South Central members apparently love to paint and thankfully, they are willing to share some of their work with the rest of us.

Lorena Green has just completed a beautiful

    painting of an egret.

Irene McDowell painted a couple of pictures of

    Indian girls.

Regena Bell painted “Smith’s Court”, a commission

    for a judge in Abilene.

June Head has started a painting of an old cowboy.

Madeline Humphrey’s Regena Bell’s painting Painting of Jesus of a cowboy

Rita Cooper, our member from Illinois won Best in

Show in a local art show this summer with this painting of a Mexican lady.

Katie McCarty is working on a cityscape – a very

    large cityscape.

  • Neva Shaw recently finished a still life.

    Regena Bell’s “Rustic Hilltop”

Rita Cooper’s painting of a lighthouse – “Sakonnet

Light” at Sakonnet Point in Rhode Island

Barb Haberstroh is painting a Christmas candle.

    Regena Bell’s “Lonesome”

Rita Cooper has painted several pictures of Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. This is Johnny and

    Penelope Cruz.

I really appreciate all of you sharing your beautiful artwork. What a lot of talent there is in the South Central Region of TEAM! You should all be very proud.

  • This ‘n That A canvas of violent black brushstrokes by abstract

expressionist Franz Kline sold for $40.4 million at

Christie’s in New York recently, setting a new record

by far for the artist. This was four times higher than

    the previous high

    auction price for

    Kline, whose

    works have tended

    to be

    overshadowed by

    those of more

    famous abstract

    artists like Mark Rothko.

A new book about Bansky (a pseudonym for a London

based political activist, film director and artist) has

just been released. Bansky is perhaps the best known

living artist. His pieces have fetched millions of

    dollars at the world’s most

    prestigious auction houses and

    he was nominated for an

    Academy Award for his film

    “Exit Through the Gift Shop”.

But for as famous as Bansky is,

    he is utterly unknown. His

identity is a mystery. He never

shows his face in public, never

    gives interviews except by

email. An example of his work is shown on the left.

The art world’s apparent immunity to economic hard

times has been underlined by the record $375 million

paid in a single day for a series of trophy paintings in

New York. The sale of works recently by post-war

masters including Francis Bacon, Mark Rothko, Andy

Warhol and Jackson Pollock was the highest one-day

haul in auction house Sotheby’s 268-year history.. A

    “screaming pope”

    piece – called

    Untitled (Pope) by

    British artist

    Francis Bacon sold

    for nearly $30

    million (pictured

    left).

WHO KNEW? Eliminate ear mites in cats or dogs with a few drops of Wesson Corn Oil. Put in a few drops, then clean ear, message it with a cotton ball and repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the animal’s skin and smothers the mites. Dawn dishwashing liquid kills fleas instantly. Add a few drops to your dog’s bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Good-bye fleas. Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately – without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pain relievers. Colgate Toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns. Before heading to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They’ll clear up your stuffed nose. Cover a blemish on your skin with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight. To heal bruises soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for one hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

“I could never put anything into a picture that wasn’t actually there in front of me. That would be a pointless lie, a mere bit of artfulness.” (Lucien Freud)

When painting portraits remember the rules

for heads: 9x12 = position chin slightly below

center of canvas. Same for 12x16. If you want

a bigger head, use a bigger canvas. If you are

painting a ¾ bust – hands need to be inside

picture. If at knee level, paint below knee to

    give hands some room.

Virtue consists, not in abstaining from vice, but in not desiring it. (George Bernard Shaw)

  • ART COMES IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES. It is limited only by the artist’s imagination and skill. Some of the following are unique examples of what artists everywhere can come up with.

Here’s another example. Chalk painting on sidewalks. Awesome!

THE ASHCAN SCHOOL of art is defined as a realist artistic movement that came into prominence in the U.S. during the early twentieth century and was best known for works portraying scenes of daily life in New York’s poorer neighborhoods. The movement grew out of a group known as “The Eight” whose only show together in l908 created a sensation. Its members included William Glackens, Robert Henri, George Luks, Everett Shinn and John French Sloan. Other members of The Eight were Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson and Maurice Prendergast whose work diverged from the Ashcan School in style. “The Eight” are remembered as a group because of the impact of their only show, despite the fact that their work was diverse in terms of style and subject matter. Their unity consisted of a desire to tell some truths about the City. The artists of the group rebelled against American Impressionism, which was the vanguard of American art at the time. Samples of some of their work:
