Worthy Faithful Navigators of the South Carolina District,

Congratulations on being elected as Faithful Navigator of your Assembly. I hope you have a successful year. If there is anything I can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to call.

For most men who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our family and fellow man. That's what the Knights of Columbus is all about. The Patriotic Degree allows Knights of Columbus members to take this one step further. "Sir Knight" is more than a title — it’s an honor.

The Knights of Columbus has been called, “The strong right arm of the Catholic Church.” And to many, the Fourth Degree, is the visible arm of the Knights of Columbus. As members of the Fourth Degree, we have a responsibility not only to serve and support our country, but to also educate our fellow men on our responsibilities of being citizens. For it does not matter what we claim to be, it matters what we are and what we do. Knights of the Patriotic Degree hold unwaveringly to what is right and honorable, working to keep God in the civic arena, serving the life of the Church, and defending laws that recognize the sanctity of life and true religious liberty. Knights of the Patriotic Degree honor our legacy of knighthood and celebrate the proud Catholic – American history we share.

The South Carolina District Programs and Awards is dedicated to recognizing those Assemblies and Sir Knights who have achieved these goals. I encourage you to study the Program, incorporate them into your plans for the year, and share your Assembly’s success through the awards program.

This Manual was written with several goals in mind:

To benefit you, the Faithful Navigator, and your Assembly in planning for your success.

Sharing the vision and goals of the Patriotic Degree.

Expound on the responsibilities of the Faithful Navigator and Assembly Marshal.

Explain the District Awards Program.

Give examples of programs your Assembly can do.

Share the proud Fourth Degree Legacy we have in the South Carolina District.

Let us pray for our success: Holy Family, pray for us. Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the unborn, pray for us. St. Joseph, patron saint of the Universal Church, pray for us.

Fraternally,

Thomas M. Monahon

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe for Peace

O Virgin of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, cover us, we pray, with your mantle of maternal love and protection.

Intercede for us, that we might be safeguarded from those who have evil designs upon our nation and its people.

Show mankind the way to peace, a peace that can be found only in your Son, and only where there is reverence for human life, especially the life of the innocent child in the womb.

O Patroness of the unborn, help us to see the connection between the evils that threaten us and the evil of abortion, that this nation may yet be reformed, and discover the true path to peace. Amen

Section 1: The Patriotic Degree

Religiously Devoted, Patriotically Proud

VISION & GOALS

Standing Firm in Support of the Order Knights of the Patriotic Degree are dedicated to the personal development and continued honor of brother Knights. We are always there to offer leadership, guidance, and encouragement.

Proudly Serving the Country Knights of the Patriotic Degree glorify God by serving our communities and nations as though Christ were the one being served.

Unwavering Support of the Faith Knights of the Patriotic Degree hold unwaveringly to what is right and honorable, working to keep God in the civic arena, serving the life of the Church, and defending laws that recognize the sanctity of life and true religious liberty.

Honoring the Legacy of Knighthood The Color Corps is an elective division of the Patriotic Degree that presents a visible reminder of our service to the community.

The Fourth Degree

“Each ‘degree’ of the Knights of Columbus is associated with a particular virtue, the fourth is the virtue of patriotism.

The Fourth Degree …. [should] be thought of in terms of service to church and country, and the goals of the Fourth Degree may be summarized as the promotion of the ideals of Catholicism and Patriotism side by side.

In more detail, these goals may be stated as:

To promote and strengthen the patriotic spirit of the civic community.

To educate its members, and others, both in the teachings of Holy Mother Church, and the history of our nation.

To promote by example the highest type of citizenship so necessary for the preservation and perpetuation of republican form of government, and its democratic institutions.

To oppose dissemination and spread of doctrine dangerous to our form of government, and to the Divine law of faith and morality.

To support by word and deed, the duly constituted authorities of local, state and national government, and to recognize excellence in public life.”

Emblem of the Patriotic Degree

The triad emblem of the Fourth Degree features the dove, the cross and the globe. The dove, classic symbol of the Holy Spirit and peace, is shown hovering over the orb of the Earth (globe). Both are mounted on a variation of the Crusader's cross, which was found on the tunics and capes of the Crusading knights who battled to regain the Holy Land from the pagans.

Spiritually, the sacred symbols on the emblem typify the union of the Three Divine Persons in one Godhead, the most Blessed Trinity.

The Globe – God the Father, Creator of the Universe.

The Cross – God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind.

The Dove – God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity.

The colors of the symbols are: A blue globe with the land of the Western Hemisphere in white. A red cross with gold borders and gold knobs at the end of the points forming the ends

of the arms of the cross, also known as the Isabella cross. A white dove.

Red, white and blue are the colors of the flag of the country in which the Knights originated. They are used to stress patriotism, the basic principle of the Fourth Degree.

Section 2: Duties and Responsibilities

Faithful Navigators

Congratulations on being elected Faithful Navigator of your Assembly. This honor, bestowed on you by your fellow Sir Knights, should be highly prized.

Your leadership will determine the success of your Assembly this coming year. The duties and the responsibilities of the Faithful Navigator are many. The intent of this manual is to summarize those major duties expected of you and to provide you guidance for your success.

Some of these responsibilities include:

Preside over all Assembly meetings: You are expected to conducting at least one meeting a month, 12 months a year.

Appoint a Program Director: This Director works with the Captain to find chairman of Assembly activities and writes up the South Carolina District Award Program nominees in a timely manner.

Appoint a Membership Director and Team The Membership Director does more than just encourages Third Degree members to reach for the honors of the Patriotic Degree. He actively contacts members of his Council and personally asks them to join.

Many Assemblies cover multiple councils. A membership coordinator from and for these other councils form the rest of the membership team. The membership coordinator contacts the 3rd Degree members of his council on behalf of the Assembly.

Appoints Committees as needed

Countersigns checks and orders for payment

Assembly Marshal

The Assembly Marshal has one of the most important responsibilities of the Assembly. He has the great responsibility for the Assembly’s Honor and Color Guard. Therefore he has the responsibility to prepare them and assure they perform professionally and with dignity. Remember, the Assembly, and therefore the honor and color guard, represent the visible arm of the Church, and of the Order.

Some of these responsibilities include:

Pre-plan the motions of the honor guard. o The Marshal shall get to the location 45 minutes to an hour ahead of time to look

the place over. He never “wings-it.” o Do not assume seats are saved for your honor guard. Have the ushers on

board. Set out “Reserved” signs. o Do not assume the flag stand are in the right places. Go check them.

o Do not assume the flag pole bases are interchangeable. Go check them.

Page 10: South Carolina Knights of Columbus - Fourth Manualkofcsc.org/upload/fourthmanual.pdf · 2017. 2. 21. · Knights of Columbus . South Carolina District. De Soto Province . Fourth Degree

Page 4

Get approval of the plan from the priest or ceremonial director. o At Mass and every religious event, the priest is in charge. His approval is

mandatory. o Go over the plan with the priest to assure you have his approval for all

movements of the honor and color guard and the use of the sword. o Do not assume that the priest will allow you to use your swords like he did last

time. Things may have changed.

Drill the Color Guard. o Even with good men, practice assures the flags fit the stands, and there is unity

in walking, turning and saluting.

Drill the Honor Guard on the sword commands. o For many of the Sir Knights, it may have been years since they have last used a

sword. Many were taught incorrectly. Run through the sword commands that will be used with the entire group.

o Verbally run through the actions that will occur so they know what is going to happen next and be looking for your hand commands.

When things are not going as planned - observe, evaluate, adapt.

Evaluate and learn what worked and what did not work.

The Purpose of the Color Corps of the Patriotic Degree

When knighthood was in flower, knights carried the sword to defend their God, their Church, their country and their fellow man according to the code of chivalry. Today, Sir Knights wear regalia and carry the sword to honor Christ and His apostles, especially on religious and civic occasions specified in this manual. Hence, the primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to encourage active Catholic citizenship and foster the spirit of patriotism in members and the community at large.

The Color Corps members exemplify all the principles of our Order:

Charity - by the gift of their time and energies necessary to practice, perfect and perform the ceremonials and sword drill;

Unity – by the united efforts of Sir Knights to practice and perfect a coordinated drill for the good of the Church and the Order;

Fraternity – by expressing an “Esprit de Corps,” sharing a common desire for drill excellence and camaraderie; and

Patriotism – by performing precision drill as a salute to God and to country and visually exhibiting a love for both.

The public appearance of Fourth Degree Knights as a Color Corps at religious and civic functions is an important activity of each Assembly. Their colorful capes and chapeaux add dignity and the pride of Church and country to any event. By these public demonstrations their loyalties bring credit to themselves and to the Knights of Columbus.

Section 5: Fourth Degree Assembly Activities

Purpose: The Knights of Columbus has been called, “The strong right arm of the Catholic Church.” And to many, the Fourth Degree, is the visible arm of the Knights of Columbus. The following is a list of patriotic activities compiled to show who we are and what we do. This list is divided into seven (7) sections:

Italicized Type: Best informed available from knowledgeable people.

* Two known exemplifications were held in Charleston, SC in 1921 and 1946 respectively.

These were prior to the South Carolina District being was formed. Prior to that time, South Carolina and Georgia were combined.

** #35 is the first document numbered exemplification. It is not sure how that number was

derived. All numbers in this table previous to that were guesses knowing the first nine exemplifications and counting backwards from 34 to 16. Obviously, there is a disconnect. In all likelihood, the number 35 was most probably incorrect. However, for continuity, we continue to use the present numbering.

Thanks to SK James P. Anderson, PFN (exemplar for over 40 years and son of first District Master) for compiling the known history and providing valuable input to exemplifications where documentation is no longer available.
