Wednesday 26 March

Bishop Hall, Elder Conservatorium

A good crowd of teachers and students

gathered in Bishop Hall for a night

exploring some music that we do not

often hear. The pieces ranged in grade

difficulty from 4 to 7, but some

combinations could be as high as

Associate level.

The first group of pieces were

beautifully performed for us by Robert

Brown, Annie Oates, Anna Cooper,

Claire Walker, Michal Rosiak and

Karen Fletcher. These performers

made the night extra special. We all

know how much more we enjoy a live

performance and in this case it helped

us gauge the standard to see a player

working with the music. Of course a

special thanks goes to Monica Laczofy

for her accompaniment of the live works.

Following these pieces were some

performances from CD recordings for us

to hear and a final group of music that

was listed but which we did not have

time to explore. Elizabeth Koch also

had a table loaded with music from her

own collection for us to peruse.

Off the Beaten Track

by Lydia Sharrad Every year, roughly 260-300 instrumentalists, aged from as young as 13 through to 28, are chosen out of the many students around Australia to partake in the Australian Youth Orchestra programs. These consist of National Music Camp, the Australian Youth Orchestral seasons, chamber camps, Young Symphonists, fellowships and more. The idea is to a) show young, budding musicians what it will be like to have a position in a professional orchestra, b) to enrich their musical experiences with hard work, professional and renowned conductors, and symphonic music to die for, and c) to teach them the joy of music. This is exactly what happens. National Music Camp was this year directed by harpist Marshall McGuire and consisted of three distinguished conductors; contemporary specialist Baldur Bronnimann, chamber musician and soloist Ian Swensen, and the ever-lovable and indefatigable Richard Gill. Under these three masters, 250 youths formed three orchestras to play their way through some equally masterly repertoire by Debussy, Prokofiev, Strauss, Stravinsky, and I could go on. The Australian Youth Orchestra seasons attract world-class conductors. Rossen Milanov conducted Season 1 this year; repertoire consisting of the great Mahler Symphony No 1, the exquisite Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances and the quirky Bernstein Overture to Candide. Season 2 will be conducted by John Nelson and the repertoire will be the continuation of the Beethoven cycle. Of course, I cannot talk about youth instrumentalists without mentioning State Music Camp. Adelaide hosts the State Music Camp every year to great success, with an even younger age group getting treated to a week of symphonic and also wind orchestral music. To be surrounded and saturated by such amazing music can only be beneficial for flute students, as the experience of State and National Music Camps are truly one you will never forget.

by Helen Seppelt

The Australian Youth Orchestra runs two programmes for music students under the age of 18, Young Symphonists ‘Strings’ and Young Symphonists ‘Woodwind, Brass and Percussion. I was very lucky to be one of only three flute players to be selected for this year’s programme, and I was the only person from South Australia in the ‘Woodwind, Brass and Percussion’. We spent the last week of March staying in an old lunatic asylum (I’m not joking here!) in Beechworth, Victoria, having intensive tuition mostly in playing chamber music, but also going through some orchestral repertoire (without strings). We were put into three ensembles and each ensemble was assigned a piece of music to prepare for a public concert at the end of the week. The three pieces were Five Ancient Dances by Ferenc Farkas, Malcolm Arnold’s Three Sea Shanties and the Nielsen Wind Quintet. Considering none of us had ever met each other before, and we were all from different states, the pieces came together really well over the week, and we very much enjoyed performing in the concert. We had fantastic tutors from all over Australia, and I got a lot out of what they all taught us about playing chamber music. The flute tutor was Mardi McSullea. The Nielsen Wind Quintet will always be a special piece of music for me, as I associate it with the most wonderful week of my life so far! I met lots of other young music students from all over Australia, and we’re all trying to keep in touch with each other. Hopefully as the years pass we will meet up again at events such as National Music Camp.

I have had a special interest in chamber music since I attended a summer woodwind school organised by Elizabeth Koch at the Conservatorium three years ago and participated in a wind ensemble, so this programme was of particular interest to me; anyone with a real love of playing chamber music would love it.

“When you work you are a flute through whose heart the

whispering of the hours turns to

music.”

“Breathing for Singers”

“If one only forms the idea that a thing is not difficult, it becomes much

easier.”

Theobald Boehm

by Dr Susannah Foulds-Elliott

I can remember being very

cross after my first viola lesson because I spent the whole lesson learning how to hold the viola without playing it at all. No doubt flautists do not get to play much in lesson one either. Now I give my singing students similar grief because in lesson 1 we only work on breathing, and usually do not get to singing at all until lesson 2.

Breathing is the basis of singing.

This, of course, is also true for flute playing, and for other winds and brass. You have to get the air in before you can make music with the air coming out. The way in which the air is taken in – which can be classified in very general terms as breathing high or breathing low – makes all the difference to the flow of air coming out.

Breathing high is the body’s natural

reaction to stress, and so musicians using low breathing to make music must learn firstly to voluntarily breathe low, and secondly to voluntarily breathe low when they take on the stress-producing situation of performing to an audience.

Thinking of breathing in its two

component parts – both the intake of air, and the expiration of air – initially makes two separate actions of what we would, in general terms, class as the single action of breathing. It is in fact made up of two completely different types of work, and once the student consciously realises this, the control of breathing becomes possible.

Two separate groups of muscles are

used for inspiratory as opposed to expiratory breathing, though both inspiratory and expiratory breathing are brought about by muscle contraction (Sundberg 1987, p. 27). Chapman (2006, p.41) says that problems with the flow of air in singing can be caused by expiratory muscles being used in the inspiratory phase.

The amount of air taken in at inspiration

varies between styles. Different singers use different breathing strategies. An excellent discussion of differences and similarities is found in Callaghan (2000, Ch.3). Classical (as opposed to contemporary) singers tend to initiate sung phrases at around 70% of vital capacity. Country singers tend to initiate sung phrases at around 55% of vital capacity, which is similar to speech breathing (Callaghan 2000, p. 31). Country singing sounds closer to speaking than classical singing, which is more closely related to exclamation (Foulds-Elliott et al, 2000).

The amount of air taken in affects the

pressure under the vocal folds, which has a direct effect on the sound. The relationships between all the components involved in breathing are highly complex, and yet in the final analysis it is important to aim for ‘naturalness’ without undue feeling of particular pressure in any one area.

Air is lost more quickly after an extreme

breath. An easy, satisfying breathe rather than breathing to the feeling of extreme gives a longer breath supply for the resultant phrase (Miller 1986, p.28). In other words, breathe deep and easy to keep the phrase going longer.

Held April 1-4, 1988, at Elder Conservatorium. The Flute Competitions were an important part of the convention. The flute societies held state heats during 1987 and the semi-finals were held in Adelaide on Thursday, March 31 at the Flinders Street School of Music. Some of the visiting artists helped with the adjudication. The finals were held in Elder Hall on the Friday afternoon.

The adjudicators for the finals were Jiri Tancibudek, Bonita Boyd and Felix Skowronek. The Fifth Australian Flute Competition required two contrasting works, a baroque or classical sonata and a post-classical work. The First prize was a return airfare to Europe, USA or Japan and the Second Prize was $1,000 donated by the Australian Flute Association (AFA).

For the Third Australian Orchestral Flute Competition the First prize was a silver head-joint with gold lip-plate donated by John Lehner Flutes, valued at $1,400, and Silver Keys Music Centre donated a $150 voucher for the Second prize. Competitors had to play any two excerpts from a list compiled by Prof. David Cubbin. Both competitions were won by Michael Waye, Principal Piccolo in the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Paul Michell (SA) was Second prize winner and Paula Rae (VIC) was Honorary Mention for the Fifth Australian Flute Competition. Paula Rae (VIC) was Second prize winner and Gerard Dutton (QLD) was Honorary Mention for the Third Australian Orchestral Flute Competition. An attempt was made to include as many professional Australian flautists in the convention as possible.

A grant from the Australian Bicentennial Authority made it possible to give these flautists honorariums for performing, lecturing or giving masterclasses.

A Bicentennial Concert of music by Australian composers was organised. Australian Composer Anne Boyd was commissioned to compose Bali Moods 1 and 2 and a grant for this was obtained from the Australia Council. Geoffrey Collins gave the premiere performance. Australian flautists Louise Dellit, Margaret Crawford, David Cubbin and Joannes Roose performed music by George Dreyfus, Kay Dreyfus,

Don Kay and Ian Shanahan. Two Afternoon Concerts and a Variety Concert were programmed and Australian flautists Vernon Hill, Frederick Shade, David Leviston and Zdenek Bruderhans and flute ensembles provided by the Flute Society of NSW and Queensland Flute Guild and Ensemble Zauberfloete from Melbourne performed in these concerts. The Sunday Night Variety Concert culminated with the Bicentennial Sketch. The TAFE Flute Ensemble, directed by Alison Rosser, played Three Quadrilles by William Ellard and Waltzing Matilda to accompany an overhead slide show with narration by Joannes Roose (dressed as a Swagman) and Alan Aungles playing a fife to outline the flute’s story in Australia!! 5UV recorded the convention concerts and offered cassettes for purchase during the convention. Alan Aungles was responsible for liaising with 5UV. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation recorded Geoffrey Collins’ performance of Bali Moods 1 and 2 and the recital by Bonita Boyd and Clemens Leske for later broadcast. To allow as much participation as possible four or five concurrent masterclasses were offered. This was very successful: many of the professional flautists attending were invited to take masterclasses and many of the convention attendees were able to perform and have their playing discussed. Ron Edwards and the Eric Bryce Trio were resident for the Late Night Jazz Club in the University of Adelaide Club Lounge and gave daily Jazz Workshops; Allans kindly loaned a grand piano to use in the Lounge. Chris Raff directed some Alexander Technique Workshops. John Lehner and Art Mayer spoke about Australian and World Flute Markets and Mark O’Connor spoke about Choosing a Flute. Ensemble playing opportunities were provided throughout the convention and some attendees spent their entire Easter playing flute ensemble music. The weather was glorious and many ensembles chose to play outside on the University lawns. The Flute Society of SA’s library provided the music; Ryszard Duluk was the librarian.

The Seventh Australian Flute Convention

Part 2 by Robert Brown

As part of the Australian theme a book of flute trios utilising well-known Australian melodies was compiled by Rae Stratfold, who did most of the arrangements, with contributions from Brenda McMurtrie and Maria Kvakan included. The book was sold to convention participants for $3 as another fundraiser! The Flute Convention Flute Choir rehearsed the Australian melodies on the Friday and Saturday afternoons under the direction of Neil Fisenden and performed them on the Sunday morning at a Flute-In in Victoria Square. Mention of this event was included in the evening news by some local TV stations. Flute Society of SA members and some convention attendees performed the Australian melodies in Rundle Mall on Thursday, March 31 as a convention warm-up. Rae Stratfold co-ordinated the various exhibits which were located in the lower Napier Building. Exhibitors included Yamaha, John Lehner Flutes, Allans Music, Silver Keys Music, Mateki Flutes, Emerson Flutes, Powell Flutes and the Australian Music Centre. Convention attendees appreciated the wide range of instruments, accessories and music displayed. Carolyn White co-ordinated all of the accommodation arrangements. Interstate visitors were billeted at Adelaide homes or stayed at the Grosvenor or Flinders Lodge Hotels. John Beare, Sid Lellmann and Glen Peake provided transport for the guest artists before and during the convention. As Convention Treasurer Noreen Ashenden issued many receipts and cheques! Noreen Ashenden, Barl Greacen, Sylvia Beare and Carolyn White manned the reception desk during the convention. Alan Aungles was stage manager for all the concerts in Elder Hall; he was assisted by Ryszard Duluk and Andrew Parham. Flute Society volunteers acted as ushers and door attendants. A contingent of accompanists was needed for concerts and masterclasses. Included were Clemens Leske, Monika Laczofy, Shirley Hicks, David Lockett, Bernadette Dempsey, Lucinda Collins, Audrey White and Petina Scobie. A Convention Programme Book was issued for the first time in 1988.

This had 80 pages, and included welcome messages from the Prime Minister, Chairman of the Australian Bicentennial Authority, Senator Baden Teague, the Premier, the Governor, the Lord Mayor, AFA President Frederick Shade, a guide to all activities, exhibit details, concert items, programme notes and biographical information. Australian and international members of the music industry booked 25 pages of advertising space and advertising space on the convention satchel was also booked. The Closing Ceremony took place on the Monday afternoon. Rae Stratfold conducted everyone playing her arrangement of Waltzing Matilda. After concluding reports from Director Alison Rosser and AFA President Frederick Shade there was a handover to the organisers of the Eighth Australian Flute Convention (Perth, 1991). Frederick Shade wrote, ‘What a wonderful Convention we have had! Our hosts had promised to provide something for everyone from amateur to the professional. They promised to provide us with a programme which would be educational, informative, humorous, serious, diverting, and many other things too. Our hosts promised us hospitality, a warm smile at our arrival and a happy band of Convention helpers to guide and assist us throughout the Convention. Well, Alison, Robert and their Committee did all of these things. On behalf of the AFA I wish to thank the South Australian Flute Society for being the host of the Seventh Australian Flute Convention, one which was an unqualified success’. Since 1991 Flute Conventions have been held in Canberra (1995), Brisbane (1999), Melbourne (2002) and Coffs Harbour (2005). After Coffs Harbour it seemed that the Flute Conventions would cease because the financial risk had become too great for the Flute Societies. The Sydney Flute Festival Ltd. was established in late 2005 by David Leviston. Successful Festivals were held in Sydney in 2006 and 2007. The next Festival will be held in 2009 – stay tuned for some exciting news!

Thank you to Alison Rosser for critically reviewing this article.
