NAGPUR, India (AP) - SouthAfrica romped to a crushing victoryover India by an innings and six runson Tuesday after another superb dis-play by pace bowler Dale Steyn on thefourth day of the first test.
India scored 233 in its initial replyto South Africa’s mammoth firstinnings total of 558 for six declared atBCA stadium, forcing the follow on.Though Sachin Tendulkar scored 100in his team’s second innings the homeside again ran into trouble and wasall out for 319.
Steyn, who had ripped throughIndia’s first innings with career bestfigures of 7-51, took another threewickets for 57 runs in its second,while Paul Harris also plunderedthree wickets for 76 runs as SouthAfrica sealed a comfortable victory.
The visitors had made a decisivestart at the crease with Hashim Amlascoring 253 not out and Jacques Kallisadding 173 in the first innings, andthey never looked back, particularlyafter Steyn’s devastating spell.
Having resumed on Tuesday withIndia on 66-2, South African skipperGraeme Smith introduced left armspinner Harris for Morne Morkelafter the first five overs of the day inan effort to force a breakthrough,while Steyn continued from the otherend.
