COACH SPEAK: ALYSSA NAKKEN Each week we'll get to know the new Giants coaches with a few fun ques-tions in this space. This week it's Assist-nat Coach Alyssa Nakken.

When you were growing up playing, who were some of the players that you looked up to as a kid? Did you try to emulate any parts of their game and incorporate it into yours as you ad-vanced in your career?

AN: I’m always inspired by athletes who play all out – like run-through-a-wall-for-my-team-mates type mentality. So I gravitated towards those types of players in all sports. The team that inspired me the most was the ’01-’02 Sacramento Kings. Chris Webber, Mike Bibby, Bobby Jackson, Peja Stojakovic. I wore #13 in travel softball & all the sports I played in high school because Doug Christie was my favorite athlete. I tried to emulate the leadership, hustle & overall entertainment factor that they all brought on the court in every sport I played.

Do you have any fun/fond memories of attend-ing games at Candlestick Park?

AN: I remember being able to take an ice chest into the stadium – I love sandwiches and my mom makes the best ones. So I vividly remember pack-ing the ice chest with sandwiches for our family, taking it into the stadium, watching BP, then sit-ting back down in our seats and crushing the san-dos right before first pitch.

When you played at Sac State, were you allowed to have at-bat music? If so, do you remember any of your choices from those days?

AN: Yes! I remember quite well: Freshman Year: I’m Shipping Up To Boston by Dropkick Murphys, Sophomore Year: Heart of a Champion by Nelly, Junior Year: Circle of Life – Lion King, Senior Year: It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time by Buckwheat Boyz.

We’ve had some down time due to the pandemic, did you catch up / watch any good TV shows or read anything you’d recommend?

AN: Over the last few weeks in particular, I (along with millions of Americans, I presume) have started to believe 1) racism is more real than we thought, 2) something is wrong when it comes to police and justice, and 3) what can I do. I learned a lot more about anti-racism while protesting here in San Francisco and at the state capitol & be-came driven to commit to it. With that, I strongly believe self-education is an essential part of any anti-racist journey so I’m reading, watching, lis-tening, & learning about the history of racism in this country and how it’s related to policing. For Podcast lovers, I recommend 1619. Netflix fans, I recommend 13th. Bookworms, I recommend The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.

SEASON TICKET MEMBER HEROES OF THE WEEK Each week we'll highlight a Giants season ticket

member or members who are stepping up during this tremendous time of need. This week we sa-lute the work of View Level season ticket mem-ber Jenny Mannone, nominated by her husband Kevin Cox.

Working for the California Pacific Medical Cen-ter (CPMC) as a nurse for the past 36 years, 21 of which in the operating room, Jenny Mannone has been on the ‘front lines’ in a profound way during these most recent months, by assisting surgeons with emergency procedures involving patients with COVID-19.

A scary time of uncertainty and exhaustion at times, yet her inner strength and perseverance carries on no matter what. She exudes the utmost enthusiasm and professionalism on every shift, by supporting her medical team while caring for patients during such a critical time. Not only that, but she also volunteers at the SPCA out of the love she has for animals, coupled with her generous, most sincere nature to help others.

With that said, and if baseball was in ‘full swing’, she would still manage to fit time into your busy days, weeks and months to attend Giants baseball games with her husband, Kevin, as avid fans and Season Ticket Members on the View level! Because of her positive persona, wel-coming demeanor and, of course, million dollar smile, her friends and co-workers who know her, fondly refer to as ‘Jenny Go Giants’!

GIANTS PLAYER SPOTLIGHT | DONOVAN SOLANO Born and raised in Barranquilla,

a port on the Caribbean Sea that is Colombia’s fourth largest city with more than 1 million people. It’s also

the birthplace of Edgar Rentería, the 2010 World Series MVP for the Gi-ants. Donovan began playing baseball at

an early age at the Rentería Baseball Academy, and played with Ed-

gar Rentería’s nephew. In 2005, less than a month after turning 17, Donovan signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an in-ternational free agent. He spent six years in the Cardinals’ system without making the

majors. He signed with the

Marlins as a minor league free agent before the 2012 season.

He made his debut May 12, 2012. Hit a pinch-hit sin-gle in his first at-bat. In his first start four days later, he went 2-for-4 against Madi-son Bumgarner and the Gi-ants.

Donovan became the 12th Colombian to reach the Ma-jor Leagues. Brother Jho-natan, a catcher, became

the 13th. His debut (with the Nation-als) came eight days after Donovan's. In fact, Jhonathan’s debut (May 29, 2012) and his first start the follow-ing day came against Solano’s Marlins with their parents watching from the stands. They played against each oth-er several times in 2013 as well.

In 2015, they played together on the Marlins, appearing in in the same game five times and starting together twice. In his Marlins' debut, Jhonatan doubled down the left field line to score Donovan, giving the Marlins’ a one-run lead.

The Solano brothers were also teammates on Colombia’s entry in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. (Co-lombia was eliminated in an extra-in-ning loss to the Dominican Republic.)

In 2013, Donovan was the National League second base Wilson Defen-sive Player of the Year, after commit-ting only eight errors in 464 chances for the Marlins. He has played second, third, shortstop and even left field in his career.

He signed with the Yankees before the 2016 season, and with the Dodg-ers before 2018.

Although he never played in the big leagues with the Dodgers, he had im-pressed then Dodgers-exec Farhan Zaidi.

Donovan told the Bay Area News Group that the Giants had made at-tempts to sign him even before Zaidi

came aboard. Donovan credits a higher power for leading him to the Giants and a shot at a major league job. “I’m a believer and I have a deal with God, and the deal is I’m going to continue working and persist and not give up and when He opens the door, I’m going to take advantage of it.”

Donovan made an impact immedi-ately when he was called up in May 2019, hitting .330, including .402 on the road. He slashed .353/.381/.492 from June 7 to the end of the season.

His .402 road batting average marked the first time a Major Leaguer hit .400 or better on the road (min. 100 road plate appearances) since Ichiro Suzuki did so in 2004. Overall, Solano is the fourth player to bat .400 or better on the road (min. 100 PA) since 1970.

FAMILY INFORMATION- Son of Luis Solano and Myriam Preciado. Luis, a retired electrician, was a pitcher in Colombia baseball leagues.

- Has one brother, Jhonatan, who also made it to the Major Leagues with Washington and Miami.

- Donovan and his wife, Laura Triana, have two sons: Donovan and Enoc Solano.

BEYOND THE GIANT VAULT - CROIX DE CANDLESTICK Housed in a 5,000 square foot building, the Giants Archives consists of memorabilia and artifacts from our team’s 138-year history. As part of the Giants Fan Page, fans can now, for the first time, learn about and view memorabilia from our collection.

“Veni, Vidi, Vixi” - I came, I saw, I survived – was a rallying cry at Candlestick from 1983-1999. Fans who braved the elements during an extra-inning night game were awarded an official Croix de Candlestick, demonstrating their loyalty and de-votion to the Giants.

April 20, 1983 was a big night for Giants fans. The extra inning win over the Dodg-ers was the first opportunity for the hardy fans at Candlestick to earn a Croix de

Candlestick, but it was a difficult rollout for the new giveaway (pictured to the right). Previously giveaways were distributed before the game began, so the Giants had to find a different way to hand out the sought after award after a game. When over 25,000 fans stayed for the first extra-inning night game of 1983 the new system had some problems and many fans went home with a “Croix raincheck” instead. The Giants quickly apologized and did everything possible to make it right. To make it easy to receive their award, fans could pick up their award at a variety of places, or they could mail their raincheck or ticket stub to the ballpark and the Giants would mail a badge back to them. In the end, every fan received their award and a new tradition was born.

A year after debuting, the Giants had fun with the Croix de Candlestick during the 1984 All-Star Game at Candlestick Park (pictured on the left). The team handed out the honorary badge to commemorate the previous All-Star Game at Candlestick in 1961. In the top of the ninth inning Sandy Koufax was replaced by Giants reliever, Stu Miller. Facing the first batter, Al Kaline, Miller was called for a balk when a particularly fierce gust of wind blew him off the mound, the good news is that he kept the score tied at 3. Luckily for Giants fans, in the bottom of the 10th inning Willie Mays scored the winning run on Roberto Clemete’s single to right – giving the National League a 5-4 victory.
