Social interaction has come a long way in the history

of human civilization since the stone age…..

Basic writing and symbols

Basic communication – the

first form of expression and

social interaction – first came

into fore in the stone age

2 million yrs ago 100,000 years ago The 1800s The early 1900s The late 1900s The 21st century

Organized spoken language

Social communication,

through speaking, came into

existence about 500,000

years ago, and was the first

organized form of social

interaction

Remote social interaction

Although the telegraph had

existed earlier, it was not used

extensively for social

communication. The telephone

first came to the fore in the

1800s. For the first time, social

interaction could be done

outside a face-to-face context

Interaction on the move

The telephone was further

developed into a mobile

version, which revolutionized

social interaction on the

move

Text based communication

The advent of the internet and

the world-wide-web initiated the

growth of websites and email –

the first form of interactive

communication which could be

done completely through text

Sky(pe) is the limit

Internet-based social

media technologies of

today allow seamless

remote communication in

various forms using

different devices

…and yet it has changed more over the last 20

years than the last 2 million

2 million yrs ago 100,000 years ago The 1800s The early 1900s The late 1900s The 21st century

Two million+ years Last twenty years

Establishing the basis for communication and social interaction

It took us close to two million years to establish language, writing,

speaking, and remote communication devices such as the telephone.

Even at the end of this period (till about 50 years back), social

interaction was still a one-on-one affair

Interaction everywhere

Our social interaction over just

the last 20 years has become

real-time, multi-person, multi-

medium, and essentially free

WHY?? Technology

Communication, information processing, and social

interaction needs are evolving from past models

Communication earlier

• Always one-to-one except in the case of

public speeches

• Required the live presence of both parties

Communication today

Information processing earlier Information processing today

Social interaction earlier Social interaction today

• Is conducted more often as part of

communities, teams, and groups than alone

• Does not necessarily require the live

presence of both parties – only of one

• Information was created by one party and

consumed by the other at a time

• The parties involved in creating information

were only the ones directly concerned

• Information creation is a joint, participative

effort where people exchange views

• Information creation and processing is done

in a community setting

• Always limited to co-located people, or at

least to people who had a fixed location

• Was done sporadically at well-designated

times and intervals (i.e. during daytimes, and

when people were free and had time)

• Does not depend on the communicating

parties being co-located or in a fixed position

• Is done constantly, 24x7, at a searing pace,

and across multiple mediums. Social

interaction today is both regular and frequent

Different social technologies have risen to address

different social interaction needs over time

Mobile

messaging

Personal

social

interaction

Professional

social

interaction

While there is a plethora of social media technologies being used today, none of them is

at the level of adoption or utility to be able to fulfilll all social interaction needs together

Social need Examples

Interacting with peers, friends, and

families through sharing text and

multimedia (photos and videos)

Interacting with colleagues and one’s

social circle to advance professional

conversations and one’s professional

community

Communication on the move

Constant communication (access to a

phone is always available)

However, the social media technologies and models

of today still suffer from many shortcomings

Social

Media

platforms

Facebook

Twitter

LinkedIn Pinterest

Viadeo

Flickr Laptops

Mobiles Tablets

Hardware devices

for social interaction

using technology

Too many social media platforms Too many hardware access devices

Today’s social media fails to fulfill esteem

and self-actualization goals (Maslow)

Unmet by social

media

Met by social

media

Today’s social media does not supplement

natural, face-to-face interaction

Social

interaction Done using

social media

Live, natural

For these reasons, technology driven social

interaction 10 years later will be very different

• Software/Hardware independent, anytime/anywhere communication

• The technologies of tomorrow will be hardware and software agnostic,

including all communication technology needed for immediate and long

distance social communication in one handy, wearable device. Already, such

devices (Google Glasses) are starting to make their first appearance

1

• From social interaction to social participation and group solutions

• In the future, social interaction will move beyond being merely a medium of

belonging to being a unique platform for addressing issues, participating in

special interests, and realizing one’s aims and objectives in life. Crowd-

sourcing and group problem solving will increase as group interaction itself

increases and teamwork becomes a critical component of success in

education, work, and even life

2

• From information to ideas to morality to spirituality

• As technology makes information collection, retrieval, and storage almost

effortless, social interaction will be more about ideas than information. This

creativity, really, is what makes us human. As people’s need for belonging

and social interaction is met easily through improving technology, there will

be a stronger social movement towards self-actualization. This will result in

lower prejudice, higher creativity, and higher respect in society

This will also involve a deep change in the

technology we use for social interaction…..

1 2

From computer software to holograms From phones/laptops to gesture controlled devices

3

From information-oriented data to a sharing of ideas and creativity

…..as well as in the data we use the technology for

Page 9: Sourav Debnath IE q3 ppt

We are moving to a future where social interaction

using technology will not be an acquired trait…..

…but something we are born with
