It is my sad task to inform you, our supporters, that a woman fleeing from domestic abuse in Santa Barbara County was murdered by her abuser this past August. In addition to devastating the family, friends and co-workers of the victim, the toll this has taken on our staff is immense. Even though we work every day with women and children who have suffered physical and mental trauma at the hand of an intimate partner, nothing can prepare us for the horrifying reality that domestic violence has extended to homicide. In working with at-risk women, we find that even the victims themselves find it hard to believe that their very lives could be so coldly and brutally taken from them.

One of DVS’s most important missions and greatest challenge has always been to convey this urgent realty to the community at large - a reality that all of us find difficult to accept and that some might consider “private” behavior. It is clear that domestic violence can, and does, kill, as was so devastatingly clear to all of us at DVS recently.

DVS’s newest media campaign seeks to reach every family in Santa Barbara County, to educate and inform them of the critical nature of our services and to avert future tragedies.

Our new Marketing Plan was unveiled recently at a media event attended by Mayor Helene Schneider and other community leaders. Award winning writer and film producer Bobby Bragg created new advertisements

and public service announcements to remind all Santa Barbara County residents that domestic violence entails unacceptable risks to the women and children caught in its cycle, and to let them know that help is available. Media consultant Steve Bonser, Graphic designer Patricia Bartoli Wible, Editor/writer Rhea Hayes and Marsha Marcoe conceptualized our new butterfly logo, which debuted among the Flags of State Street in October. They also polished and sharpened our printed materials to make sure the pathway to our services is clear and concise.

Please look for our message in the coming weeks and months and pass it on to anyone and everyone you interact with. In this case – and dramatically so – information saves lives.

Presidents’ Report

Success of the Tea

High Esteem Tea, held at the Four Seasons Biltmore on October 2 was a resounding success for this annual event, now in its fourth year. With each year, this event seems to attract more media attention, and this year was exceptionally noticed and attended by nearly 200 people. Committee members brainstormed ways to attract more community leaders and the results provided DVS with its most successful Tea to date with 100% of the expenses covered by additional sponsors.

This year we were very fortunate that Holly Cole, Director of Government and External Affairs for Verizon, gifted us with 200 copies of the DVD, Telling Amy’s Story, which was distributed to all who attended. The audience was quite moved by the four-minute

excerpt from the documentary film, based on a true life story about a young woman victimized by domestic violence in her home and workplace. Sadly, her story ended in homicide,

when she attempted to leave. Our keynote speaker, Santa Barbara District Attorney Joyce Dudley, has worked with many victims of domestic violence in our community, and she began her powerful speech by displaying graphic photos of abuse victims from all walks of life. Joyce emphasized how domestic violence transcends all socioeconomic barriers and she brought it home to our audience by sharing a story of her own – that of a close friend who on the surface would not be thought of as a victim of abuse: she was educated, beautiful and wealthy. Fortunately for her, the violent cycle ended, unlike Amy depicted in the film, because her mother intervened when she saw her daughter’s battered face and persuaded her to leave. “Step outside with the children, close the door, and never go back” she counseled. And that’s what the woman did. We, as a community, need to be the mother of all abused women and intervene when we see victimization. Joyce fervently believes that Santa Barbara is the community capable of leading the nation in putting an end to domestic violence. The 2nd Pathways to Hope Award was given to Jean Schuyler, who along with her late husband Barry, has been one of Santa Barbara’s major philanthropists.

Together, they led the community in developing the Douglas Preserve, Ellwood Mesa, Maritime Museum, and Fairview Gardens. Among the many non-profits Jean was involved with, we were fortunate to have her as a DVS Board Member from 1998-2004. Her empathy for challenges faced by women and children helped us to choose Jean as the recipient of the Pathways to Hope Award. The elegant crystal award honored Jean’s exemplary life of philanthropy, and is well described by the Emily Dickinson poem inscribed on the award:

Our enthusiastic “Queen of the Auctioneers” Hannah-Beth Jackson, entertained and bolstered our fundraising efforts while obtaining impressive donations for two paintings and a mixed media sculpture created especially for DVS and donated to us by threelocal artists Priscilla Fossek, Margaret Nadeau, and Anne Luther. The lovely pearl necklace designed by Kathy Borgers generated nearly $3500 for our raffle. My co-chair Sally Hamilton and I send our thanks and gratitude to our wonderful committee, to our honoree and all the generous participants in the tea. We know the success of this event has far reaching impacts and has for four years now, contributed to the widening network of understanding and awareness of the critical role Domestic Violence Solutions plays in our community.

She grew up in a violent household, the youngest of three girls who constantly witnessed their mother’s abuse by their father, who was also a police officer “There was no one we could call, the police were all his friends.” And because there were no agencies to help people back then, her experiences taught her the importance of organizations like Domestic Violence Solutions. She is happy to be in a position to help other women and children who suffer under similar circumstances. “No one should be forced to stay with an abuser, and women without financial resources, frequently are.”

The Legacy Club honors remarkable individuals who have made a long-term commitment with their gift to protect women and children from domestic violence and to keep our shelter doors open for years to come. The generous commitment from Legacy Club members help to insure our success and support our mission to provide emotional support and personal advocacy to women in crisis, enable them to recognize strengths and resources within themselves, and empower them to make choices. The Legacy Club members are playing a critical leadership role in effecting social change by educating the community, by supporting multiple associations and other social change groups and by supporting the work of women’s rights organizations.

To date, seven individuals have helped make The Legacy Club successful because of their impassioned belief that DVS deserves their long-term support, and is fulfilling its mission through a financially sound and responsible use of its funding dollars. These individuals have made an important bequest, naming Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County in their wills. Violent and abusive behavior and attitudes can be replaced by healthy behavior and attitudes that are based on equality. Both men and women must work to change societal norms that must change in order to end domestic violence.

DVS Goes Green

With the help of a $100,000 grant from Blue Shield and Tiffany Beffel and Perrin Pellegrin of the Innovative Workshop Consulting firm, DVS is well on its way towards becoming a Green business as designated by the city of Santa Barbara. DVS Controller, Roberta Weighill along with Innovative Workshop Consulting recently completed a Sustainable Operations and Maintenance Policy handbook for Domestic Violence Solutions that gives directions on purchasing, solid waste management, water efficiency and energy conservation – all things that will positively impact our administrative expenses and help the agency do its part in reducing its carbon footprint. The most important impact from the grant came from the technology improvements in the form of 25 new computers, and a network server which have now been networked throughout the county. The new equipment includes energy saving flat screen monitors and updates all the offices, reducing the expensive use of fax machines and greatly reducing the hassle and expense of service calls for out of date equipment. Roberta reports that when the technology phase is

completed, the agency will be able to conduct training and other communicat ions though webinars, thereby significantly reducing the time and commuting expenses of staff and volunteers, while

increasing everyone’s productivity and improving DVS’s already exemplary 20% administrative fee ratio. Future improvements may include the installation of solar panels, but already the many changes are showing. Staff can be seen having their morning coffee in ceramic mugs rather than styrofoam, and there’s not a water bottle to be found. The Second Stage shelter now glows with energy saving light bulbs generously donated and installed by DVS friend Barret Hilzer. Through green training seminars offered by the city of Santa Barbara, DVS staff has been educated about the effectiveness of recycling, composting and Roberta has developed a policy for the purchasing of cleaning products, and installing conforming plumbing products with low flow toilets and shower heads when renovations are called for at the shelters. By following these guidelines, the agency may qualify for additional grants and rebates as a result of its efforts. Roberta is pleased that the staff has embraced this mission, and is proud to say that DVS is making an impact by their recycling efforts.

Holiday Happiness for AllDuring the holiday season DVS’ three shelters are filled with displaced families who especially appreciate our generosity and kindness at this time of the year. The ability to enjoy a safe and loving atmosphere is priceless.
