PORTSMOUTH ON BRINK OF

BUSINESSBOOM

BY KEVIN BRISCOE

Page 9: Solent BusinessView Edition #1

Chairman of the Portsmouth Area Committee, Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, and Director

at Briscoe French Communications

Doing business in and around the Portsmouth area has rarely been better - and it looks like the upward trend for the area will continue for some time to come.

The depths of the recession in recent years were brutal to this area - we saw thousands of jobs lost and businesses closed - but the recovery has been running for some time now and it looks as if blue skies are ahead.

Firms that have been based in and around the city for years have been expanding - slowly at first but more quickly now - while others are looking at Portsmouth and the area as a possible site fior relocation.

Huge infrastructure projects - such as Dunsbury Hill Farm off the A3M and the now-completed new M275 motorway junction which will open up the gateway to the city - show Portsmouth’s intent to be the standard bearer city for the south coast.

There is no doubt the loss of shipbuilding with the closure of the BAE yard in the city seemed like a massive blow at the time - but if anything it seems to have created more opportunities and has certainly put Portsmouth under the government spotlight, as can be seen by the appointment of Michael Fallon as minister for the city.

It is important that we continue to capitalise on the opportunities that have been presented to us. More infrastructure changes are needed - for example the M27 corridor needs serious attention to deal with its rush hour problems - and there are bids in for government funding to make some of those projects happen.

But confidence in our city and our area is high at the moment and we must make sure we ride that wave for as long as we can.

The decision of Sir Ben Ainslie to site his headquarters for an Americas Cup challenge in the city is one of the biggest votes of confidence we could have had. It will bring a national and international spotlight on Portsmouth and, speaking as a PR and marketing man, that can only be great news for continued inward investment.

area is high at the

STRESSES& STRAINS

OF RUNNINGA BUSINESS

DOES BEING A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER STILL FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE A JOB?

Setting out in business on your own always comes with its preconceived ideas of what is involved which with many of us come to quickly realise that it takes a lot more effort than we originally expected.

“Build it and they will come” tends to be one of those delusional ideas that if you have the right product or

service, then the customers will flock in droves to invest in your offering.

Current statistics in the UK illustrate that 25% of start up businesses fail in their 1st year, rising to 36% by year two and a wopping 44% failing before year 3. With those businesses seeing it past year three, a desperate cry out for the magic formula comes from those that previously come to their demise.

What does come to light of those business that fail to become established is the lack of entrepreneurial spirit and insight into the work involved to get their business off the ground. The business tends to be about the owner rather than as a separate entity thus never having the clear vision of what the end product will look like when it comes to exiting or franchising.

Too much ego and not enough attention to the ‘reality’ of their situation gives the false impression that what the owner has available is desirable, accessible and deliverable to the right audience. When a business starts off being about the owner key information gets missed and thus poor decisions take place and stress levels begin to increase when the expected outcomes do not emerge.

There are many business consultants and coaches out there make it their creed to have a clear vision and business plan to succeed. Personally I think this is one dimensional because on a psychological level we blinker the reality of where the business exists. This is where it requires a closer look at how the owner perceives themselves and their business in the mental panorama they have for a brain.

In my work I frequently witnesses business owners expressing business goals as something to avoid. This is inserting negative imagery in the brain thus feeding their stress levels. A second symptom is the owners once upon a time aspiring vision shrinks smaller and smaller over time

to eventually being expressed as a state of survival. The third symptom is the more common constant applying of will power and achieving success at whatever cost. This can be the most damaging because often success is achieved yet the owner has a broken marriage, poor family relationships and some form of ill health to the point they feel unfulfilled and cannot enjoy the reap of what they have sewn.

So what is the alternative? Being committed to accepting the unequivocal truth of the situation in every single moment that passes; without this commitment to the truth, your business decisions will be based on a distorted mental model, rather than on accurate information of what the market wants and how it wants it delivered.

A simple 3 step model for structuring a business is to thoroughly understand your target market or your business environment (external). This then enables you to create and define your strategy of how you are going to market, deliver and maintain the customers that want what you offer. The final aspect of the model is to structure your business (internal) to support your strategy of going to market and thus meeting the needs of your customers.

If your business is struggling then looking at these 3 facets will help you to easily diagnose the fundamental issues (not the symptoms of the issue) to then putting you in a position of control as you will have the clarity to apply the key changes in the area that need it most.

Is this Utopian? It almost certainly is. If you do not have an aspiration bigger than yourself with a clear eye on what’s true then why bother going into business in the first place. The pain is just not worth it.

TYPE 1?TYPE 2?

HOW MUCH DOYOU KNOW?

Page 17: Solent BusinessView Edition #1

How much do you really know about Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes? There are so many articles and news pieces in the paper and on the TV every week with some huge numbers associated with the condition.

Have we all become rather blasé about the numbers involved? Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) is a UK wide charity based near Portsmouth in Hampshire, and it is keen to remind you there are over 3 million people in England living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. 10% have Type 1 and 90% have Type 2 with an estimated 500,000 people living with Type 2 diabetes but who do not know it yet and are at risk of long term complications.

Did you also know that for the 10% of people living with Type 1 diabetes it cannot be prevented? However it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of Type 1 diabetes. This is crucial to avoid children and adults becoming acutely ill with Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).

At the moment seven million people could be at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and the numbers are rising dramatically every year. Treatment of diabetes and its complications currently cost the NHS around 10% of its annual budget; that’s approximately £10 billion per year. If current trends continue, it is estimated that by 2025, five million people in the UK will be living with diabetes.

Locally in the Hampshire area the figures reflect these national statistics, today nearly 80,000 people are living with diabetes. By 2030, it is predicted that this will be nearer to 100,000 people, in fact you probably know someone living with Type 2 diabetes, or maybe you are living with it yourself?

DRWF is committed to ensuring people living with diabetes are Staying well until a cure is found. The charity has demonstrated the importance of self-education and provides support to people through a range of media, including the website, a monthly newsletter, free patient information leaflets, Diabetes Wellness Events and so much more. It also has a commitment to funding important research across the UK into understanding the causes, prevention and treatment of the condition with the ultimate goal of finding a cure. All of these activities depend on the myriad of fundraising initiatives it undertakes as the charity doesn’t receive any government funding.

The charity is always keen to hear from individuals, social and community groups as well as companies who would like to help to fundraise to support this important work. Maybe you’d like to take part in events such as a charity skydive, or an organised run or cycle. Or you could organise a dress down day at work or a quiz night or coffee morning with friends.

Get in touch with the charity to see how you can get involved and access the support you need to get started. Call 02392 637808 to speak to someone about the resources and for more information about the work of the charity.

Portsmouth Football Club doesn’t do quiet years

And 2013/14 was absolutely no exception. On April 19th 2013 a settlement allowed Pompey Supporters Trust and 12 high net worth fans to assume ownership of the troubled club.

If a three year battle to take control had been hard to take, the legacy facing

the new owners was even worse. The club had no contracted sponsors at all. No advertising revenue. No replica kit supplier. No training ground. No merchandise operation and no shop. No commercial or marketing staff/systems. Even more fundamentally, the club had two remaining professional players, no manager, coaching staff or scouting system. The small remaining administrative/finance and ticketing staff were battered and bruised by an endless spiral of pay cuts and redundancies.

Despite two periods of administration, overheads remained out of control with the club scheduled to lose £900,000 in the first year. There also remained the legacy of paying £8.2m to former players over three years, although this was mostly covered by parachute payments from the Premier League.

The mere act bringing the business out of administration triggered a ten point penalty which consigned the club to relegation to League 2, the fourth and lowest tier in the professional game.

And yet, the first home match under fan ownership was watched by a capacity 20,000 crowd.

The priority was to move at breathtaking speed to drag the club into the 21st century and establish normal business practice within a matter of weeks, a process not helped by a ruling from the local authority who were forced to slash capacity to 18,150 following years of neglect from previous owners.

By the time July rolled around, a new website had been launched which turned a regular £50,000 annual loss into a six figure revenue earner. A new ticketing system, AudienceView, was installed and running, saving a six figure sum pa. A new replica kit partner, Sondico, were appointed and instantly the club was able to turn a flat line into a six figure revenue stream for each of the five years of the contract.

The business community rallied around the club in a very heartening manner, recognising the struggles the club had faced and providing desperately needed support. Jobsite renewed their sponsorship for two years. Ridgeway Mercedes renewed, with IMS and L&S also coming on board as stand sponsors, while OneCom signed a deal to be communications partners and big screen sponsors.

One year on, much has been achieved and, perhaps inevitably, many lessons have been learned. A rocky first season saw the club appoint two managers before eventually striking gold with Pompey legend Andy Awford, whose record of five wins and 2 draws from our final seven matches saved the club from what had become a dangerous flirtation with relegation. Losses were reduced from the projected figure of £900,000 to less than a third of that following better than anticipated commercial performance.

Perhaps the most heartening of all, average gates were over 15,500 with the first and final two matches complete sell-outs. That figure was 19th highest in the 72 club Football League structure. The club is now moving forward on a sound footing, moving inexorably towards profitability and investing in infrastructure, with a new training ground under construction and repairs to the stadium in progress.

Its been a long, long year, but more progress has been made in those months than in the previous 20 years combined. And long may that continue.

Despite all of our sponsors continuing to renew, there remain a wealth of opportunities available to partner with Portsmouth FC and access their 217,000 registered supporters. To give your business Pompey Power call Anna Mitchell on 07803 926282 or email [email protected]

More people are living longer, The State Pension Age is later for many of us and millions will draw their State Pension for longer than imagined by the government’s number crunchers just a few years ago. Stake-holder Pension legislation excluded about 5 million of the7½ million workers being targeted and now we have a form of compulsion. We haven’t saved enough for our retirement and employers will now help us to do so.

Is Your Business Liable?Probably. There are two main reasons why your business might be exempt from this legislation.

It is a company, Partnership, LLP or Sole Trader AND you employ fewer than one employee. That is none.

You run a limited company with fewer than two directors AND no other employees. Just you. The following are not exemptions1 My staff don’t want to join2. I gave a pay rise instead of a

pension3. New recruits have to agree to opt

out.

Any inducement to opt out will lead to disciplinary action, a £400 fixed penalty plus daily fines of between £50 and £5,000 depending on the number of disadvantaged employees.

A few other myths to be dispelled.

You cannot Opt Out, your employees can Opt Out after you have fulfilled your DUTIES.

Do not assume your existing Pension Plan will do the job, it will almost certainly need amendment if it can be used. If you don’t have a group scheme for employees you will need a Qualifying Workplace Pension Scheme

Your Accountant, Payroll Manager and IFA are unlikely to deal with

this for you on their own, although collectively they might get close as each has a part to play.

Your current HR, pension and payroll software is likely to be inadequate and will need updating or possibly replacing, the Pensions Regulator acknowledges this in their guidance.

Plan at least 12 months ahead, to do this you need to identify your Staging Date, establish a timeline for your business and start working with your advisers. Don’t be surprised if they are less than enthusiastic, it is a complex subject which many, including accountants and Financial Advisers, are leaving to specialist firms dealing exclusively with Automatic Enrolment.

To find out your company Staging Date email your company name and PAYE Reference number to [email protected] and I will provide you with a date and a planning timeline for your business. You may have seen the celebrity business men and women on TV, wearing hard hats and telling the world:

“I’m in”They may well be, but they didn’t do it on their own and it involved a lot of hard work and planning both in house and with their advisers.

One final piece of advice, do not delay, within a few months the demand for advice will exceed the capacity advisers have to deal with it and you may find you are on your own.

DEFINE: STEM

Page 27: Solent BusinessView Edition #1

STEM: (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Whilst the good news is that more and more young people are studying STEM subjects at school the picture is not so positive for young women entering science related work, apprenticeships and studying these subjects in further and higher education. This means that the number of people in the workforce available for jobs in this field is much reduced. According to WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) only 13% of all STEM jobs in the UK are occupied by women and fewer than one in ten STEM managers are female. There is no doubt that there needs to be a cultural shift to encourage more female participation in STEM careers and research would suggest that there is a growing interest from women to study science related subjects. As a headteacher of an all-girls school I have also seen a trend in widening of interest in careers that use STEM subjects, for example, in computing. Traditionally in the past “science” girls were mostly attracted to medically related fields and did not seem to consider other careers that were more male dominated. Using a good careers advisor is one way to promote an awareness of opportunities beyond the conventional. It is important to inform girls whilst still at school about the many and varied employment opportunities that exist in the field of STEM. Work experience or internships is another way of developing an interest and in addition using existing female employees to go into schools to talk about their work and route into their career is invaluable in promoting an appreciation of what being, for example, an engineer, is really like and the many facets of the job.

Some engineering employment is seen as dirty or too manual which is not the case and being able to put aside those misconceptions is essential if more girls are to be attracted to these careers. Teachers too can play a part in encouraging young women into STEM related careers and it is therefore paramount that those advising in schools have up-to-date knowledge and information especially about new career opportunities. It is of enormous benefit to all if school staff also get the chance to visit industry and see for themselves the vast range of opportunities available in STEM careers. If we do not attract more women into STEM employment then there will continue to be a shortage of talent to fulfil our employment needs. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that women get every opportunity to work in these exciting and thrilling industries. Mrs Jane Prescott, BSc NPQHHeadmistress,Portsmouth High School

GROWTHFUNDING

DV&D Communications Ltd grow by 43% thanks to Growth Funding.

Since 1990, DV&D Communications Ltd, based near Chichester, has been helping clients generate tangible business value from their voice and data communications infrastructure, with an impressive client base including the likes of the NHS and Farnborough Air Base.

Over the last two years DV&D have accessed the Growth Accelerator funding available to SME clients to grow their businesses.

They recognized that in order to grow the company and maintain their high service levels they needed a clear growth strategy, which included capacity planning.

Under the Growth Accelerator Programme they engaged the services of Steve Jones from Skills for Business Training Ltd, as their growth coach.

As a result of the coaching the business has increased its turnover by 43%, whilst creating new areas of the business and managing to maintain their ability to deliver outstanding service.

Anthony Powell, Director at Digital Voice and Data Communications Ltd said that ‘without the clear strategy laid out in the coaching the business simply would not have been able to grow the way it has. We are now looking forward to further expansion, in the knowledge that we have the strategy and capacity in place to maintain our high service levels’The areas the business focussed on were:

• To create a three year vision and growth plan with a view to identifying 3 or 4 key areas to focus on each year.

• To develop a one year breakthrough plan to action these key areas;

• To Build a Senior Management

Team capable of taking operational responsibility for the business from the owner thus freeing the MD to be operate more strategically;

• To increase market share and develop additional product offerings to existing and new clients

DV&D Communications admit that the availability of the Growth Accelerator funding played a major part in their decision to move forward with the strategic coaching provided by Steve Jones.

They thoroughly recommend using the funding and in particular recommend choosing the right coach to support the business.

For more information why not contact their coach Steve Jones who would be happy to talk through how the funding works.

The funding is available to businesses:

• Registered in England• Fewer than 250 Employees• Have a turnover of less than £40m• Have potential for rapid, sustained

growth• Have ambition to double or better

within 3 years

As Steve Jones says ‘Potentially this applies to most businesses that I meet. If they have an appetite to grow then they’ll most likely qualify’

NOT ONTHE AGENDA

Four in 10 employers planning to invest further in wellbeing benefits. But health and wellbeing is not on the agenda for more than a third of businesses

Four in 10 employers are looking to invest further in health and wellbeing benefits as a means to improve their reward package, a survey has found. Some 44% said they would do this by reallocating budget from another area and 42% said they would make new budget available to support the investment.

The survey by Cigna found that more than half of respondents offered a health-related benefit, the most popular being employee assistance programmes (63%), occupational health (57%) and private medical insurance (53%).

However, the research also found that for over a third of organisations employee health and wellbeing is not even on the agenda.

For the remaining two-thirds the number one health and wellbeing priority is managing sickness absence. Four in 10 regarded this as a key issue in their organisation, however over a quarter do not measure levels of sickness absence.

The biggest health and wellbeing issue facing employers is increased stress levels, cited by 50% of respondents. A further 47% cited increased workload, 30% work-life balance and 27% unhealthy lifestyle choices.

“Importantly, employers are not just aware of these issues – a high percentage also feels a responsibility to support employees with these. 93% felt a duty to step in when employees were suffering from increased levels of stress and 79% wanted to help employees achieve a better work-life balance,” the white paper, Health & Wellbeing – An Employer’s Perspective, said.

The survey also found that more than a quarter of employers have experienced employees off work for extended periods while they wait for NHS treatment. However, less than a third believe they have a responsibility to help employees address this issue.Extended waiting periods are particularly an issue for elective surgery and diagnostic tests, reported by 56% and 45% of employers respectively.

Waiting lists for treatment of the two most common causes of long-term absence – musculoskeletal and mental health conditions – were also reported as affecting employee absence. More than a third of respondents said they had experience of employees being absent whilst waiting for treatment for these conditions.

“Having to wait for treatment can have more serious consequences than being off work for an extended period. Without early intervention, many conditions, especially musculoskeletal and mental health, become more difficult to treat,” the report said. “In addition, the longer someone is off work, the harder it becomes to return. Someone who has been off work sick for six months or longer has an 80% chance of being off work for five years.”

Why is there so much confusion about employees’ entitlement to sight tests? Is it the regulations?

The DSE Regulations state clearly that there is a requirement to provide eye and eyesight tests,on request to all or new VDU users.

Under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, people who use a VDU as a habitual part of their job are entitled to an eye and eyesight test administered by aqualified professional and paid for by their employer. You are legally entitled to a free eye test

if you use a computer for more than a hour a day.

LIVE TO EAT,NOT EAT TO LIVE

Page 35: Solent BusinessView Edition #1

Food plays such a large part in all of our lives and I am delighted to be part of this fabulous new business magazine. This launch feature provides some background to my tasty journey and in following issues I will be providing recipes and tips to help you create some healthy, tasty dishes with a difference. In May 2012 we relocated from Richmond in Surrey to Hayling Island and I was able to install the kitchen of my dreams. On completion of the project, I had a moment of inspiration and realised I could fulfil a life- long dream of running my own business and follow my love of cooking and passion for food- thus Food Fiend Experience (FFE) was born.

In the short life of FFE, I have created a business offering a unique experience, much more than cooking classes, the events are truly memorable experiences which are as much about fun as they are about education. However the aim is that all customers go away with increased confidence in their chosen cuisine,

armed with new skills and techniques and inspired to want to cook more. It is truly wonderful that I have been able to inspire my clients to use food and cooking to reconnect with loved ones and friends. The business delivers tailored cookery experiences to individuals and groups - the focus is on international cuisine; from Chinese and Thai to Moroccan and Indian. I have refined my recipes to make them healthy and simple to make, so that clients can recreate them at home too. Whether clients come for a hands-on cooking course or for a ‘Come Dine’ with me experience, a unique surprise is in store for all!

So what are you waiting for come and taste it for yourself!
