Science as one form of truth

People’s ‘truth’s differ the world over, and we often encounter ‘facts’ at odds with our own Science – is a logical system that bases knowledge on direct, systematic observation Empirical evidence – information we can verify with our senses

Scientific evidence sometimes challenges our common sense

Three ways to do Sociology

1) Scientific Sociology Scientific sociology – is the study of society based on systematic observation of social behaviour.

o this scientific orientation to knowing is called positivism – assumes that an objective reality exists ‘out there’

Concepts, Variables and Measurement o A basic element of science is the concept – a mental construct that represents some

part of the world in a simplified form Sociologists use concepts to describe people

o A variable – is a concept whose value changes form case to case (example: price)o The use of variables depends on measurement – a procedure for determining the

value of a variable in a specific case o Because almost any variable can be measured in more than one way, sociologists

often have to decide which factors to consider Defining Concepts

o Measurement is always somewhat arbitrary because the value of any variable partly depends on how it is defined

o Operationalize a variable – which means specifying exactly what is to be measured before assigning a value to a variable

Reliability and Validity o For a measurement to be useful, it must be both reliable and valid o Reliability – refers to consistency in measurement. In other words, a measurement

is reliable if repeated measurements give the same result each time. o However, consistency does not guarantee validity – which means actually

measuring exactly what you intend to measure

Relationships among Variables o Once measurements are made, investigators can pursue the real payoff: seeing how

variables are relatedo The scientific ideal is cause and effect – a relationship in which change in one

variable causes changes in another Independent variable – the variable that causes the change Dependent variable – the variable that changes

o NOTE: JUST BECAUSE TWO VARIABLES CHANGE TOGETHER DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE LINKED IN A CAUSE-AND-EFFECT RELATIONSHIP

o Correlation – is a relationship in which two (or more) variables change together o Spurious correlation – an apparent but false relationship between two (or more)

variables that is caused by some other variable o Exposing a correlation as spurious requires a bit of detective work, assisted by a

technique called control – holding constant all variables expect one in order to see clearly the effect of that variable

o To establish cause and effect, three requirements must be met 1) a demonstrated correlation 2) an independent (or causal)_ variable that occurs before the dependent

variable 3) no evidence that a third variable could be causing a spurious correlation

between the two The Ideal of Objectivity

o Social scientists strive for objectivity – personal neutrality in conducting research Objectivity means that researchers carefully hold to scientific procedures,

not letting their own attitudes and beliefs the results o The influential German sociologist Max Weber expected people to select their

research topics according to their personal beliefs and interests Knowing that people select topics that are value-relevant, Weber cautioned

researchers to be value-free in their investigations One way to limit distortion caused by personal values is replication –

repetition of research by other investigators – with the same results for one experiment; it proves that the results are not biased

Some limitations of scientific sociology o Human behaviour is too complex for sociologists to predict any individual’s actions

preciselyo Because humans respond to their surroundings, the mere presence of a researcher

may affect the behaviour being studied o Social patterns change; what is true in one time or place may not hold true in

another o Because sociologists are part of the social world they study, being value-free when

conducting social research is difficulty 2) Interpretive Sociology

Max Weber, who pioneered this framework, incorporated that insight, arguing that the proper focus of sociology is interpretation - or understanding the meanings involved in everyday life Interpretive sociology – is the study of society that focuses on the meanings people attach to their social world

o It differs from scientific in three ways: First, scientific sociology focuses on action, or what people do, whereas

interpretive sociology deals with the meaning attached to the behaviour Second, while scientific sociology sees an objective reality ‘out there’

interpretative sociology sees reality as being constructed by people themselves in the course of their everyday lives

Third, scientific sociology tends to make use of quantitative data, interpretive sociology relies on qualitative data

Max Weber combined the best of both the scientific and the interpretive approaches – the positivism of August Comte and the interpretive emphasis of Wilhelm Dilthey who might accurately be called the founder of interpretive sociology

3) Critical Sociology Like the interpretive orientation, critical sociology developed in reaction to the limitation of scientific sociology. This time however, the problems was the foremost principle of scientific research: objectivity Critical sociology – is the study of society that focuses on the need for social change

Gender and Research

Sociologists have become aware that research is affected by gender – the personal traits and social positions that members of a society attach to being female or male Margrit Eichler identifies five ways in which gender can shape research:

o Androcentricity – refers to approaching an issue form a male perspective

o Over-generalizing – this problem occurs when researchers use data drawn from people of only one sex

o Gender blindness – failing to consider the variable of gender at all o Double standards – researchers must be careful not to distort what they study by

judging men and women differently o Interference – if a subject reacts to the sex of the researcher, interfering with the

research operation

Methods of sociological research

A research method – is a systematic plan for doing research Four commonly used method of sociological investigation:

→ Experiments, surveys, participant observation and the use of existing data

Testing a hypothesis: the experiment

The logic of science is more clearly found in the experiment – a research method for investigating cause and effect under highly controlled conditions Typically, researchers devise an experiment to test a hypothesis – a statement of possible relationship between two (or more) variables

o Takes the form of an if-then statement An experiment gathers the evidence needed to reject or not reject the hypothesis in four steps:

o Specify the independent variable & dependent variable o Measure the initial value of the dependent variable

o Expose the dependent variable to the independent variable o Measure the dependent variable to see what change took place

Another strategy used to gain control is dividing research subjects into an experimental group and control group The Hawthorne effect

o Refers to a change in a subject’s behaviour caused simply by the awareness of being studied

Asking questions: Survey research

A survey – is a research method in which subjects respond to a series of statements of questions in a questionnaire or an interview Population and Sample

o A survey targets some population – the people who are the focus of research o Researchers collect data from a sample – a part of the population that represents

the whole Random sampling – is when researchers draw a sample form the population

randomly so that every person in the population has an equal chance to be selected

Using Questionnaires o A questionnaire – is a series of written questions that a researcher presents to

subjects Closed-ended format questionnaire provides the questions and a selection of

fixed responses Open-ended format questionnaire allows subjects to respond freely,

expressing various opinions Conducting interviews

o An interview – is a series of questions a researcher asks respondents in person.

In the Field: Participant observation

The most widely used strategy for field study is participant observation – a research method in which investigators systematically observe people while joining them in their routine activities

Using available data: secondary and content analysis

Sociologists engage in secondary analysis – a research method in which a researcher uses data collected by others

o Another type of secondary analysis is called content analysis. This entails the counting or coding of the content of written, aural, or visual

materials

Sociologists turn facts into meaning by building theory through two ways: o Through inductive logical thought and deductive logical thought o Inductive logical thought – is reasoning that transforms specific observations into

general theory In this mode, a researcher’s thinking runs from the specific to the general

o Deductive logical thought – is reasoning that transforms general theory into specific hypotheses suitable for testing

Moves ‘downward’ in the opposite direction compared to inductive logical thought

Chapter 3 – Culture

What is Culture?

Culture – refers to the ways of thinking, the ways of acting, and the material objects that together shape a people’s way of life Nonmaterial culture – refers to the ideas created by members of a societyMaterial culture – refers to the physical things created by members of a society Travellers often find themselves feeling uneasy as they encounter an unfamiliar culture. This uneasiness is culture shock – personal disorientation when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life Only humans rely on culture rather than on instinct to create a way of life and to ensure survival

Culture, Nation, State and Society

culture refers to the ideas, values and artifacts that make up a shared way of life nation is commonly used to refer to a political entity – a state or country; it also refers to people who share a culture, ancestry and history state is a political entity in a territory with designated border society refers to organized interaction of people within a nation, state or other boundary who share a culture

The elements of culture

although cultures vary greatly, they all have common elements, including symbols, language, values, and norms Symbols

o Humans transform the elements of the world into symbols – anything that carries a particular meaning recognized by people who share culture

o Symbols allows people to make sense of their lives, and without them human existence would be meaningless

o Language – is a system of symbols that allows people to communicate with one another – and is the key to the world of culture

o Language not only allows communication but also is the key to cultural transmission – the process by which one generation passes culture to the next

o Does Language shape reality? Edward Spair and Benjamin Whorf noted that each language has words or

expressions with no precise counterparts in other languages Sapir-Whorf hypothesis – states that people perceive the world through

the cultural lens of language Values and Beliefs

o Values – culturally defined standards that people use to decide what is desirable, good, and beautiful and that serve as broad guidelines for social living.

o Values are broad principles that support beliefs – specific statements that people hold to be true

Norms o Norms – rules and expectations by which a society guides the behaviour of its

members o Some norms are proscriptive – stating what we should not doo Some norms are prescriptive – states what we should do o Mores and Folkways

William Graham Sumner coined the term mores – to refer to norms that are widely observed and have great moral significance

Folkways – norms for routine or casual interaction Social Control

o Social control – attempts by others to regulate people’s thoughts and behaviour Ideal and Real culture

o ideal culture – social patterns mandated by cultural values and norms, is not the same as real culture – actual social patterns that only approximate cultural expectations

material culture and technology o apart from the symbolic elements as values and norms, every culture includes a

wide range of physical human creations known as artifacts o a society’s artifacts partly reflect underlying cultural values o material culture also reflects a society’s technology – knowledge that people use to

make a way of life in their surroundings New information technology and culture

o Many rich nations including Canada, have entered a post-industrial phase based on computer and new information technology

o Post-industrial production is based on computers and other electronic devices that create, process, store and apply information

Heavy immigration, over two centuries and especially the last 30 years, has made Canada the world’s most multicultural country Before 1961, about 90 percent of immigrants to Canada came from Europe, especially the United Kingdom Since 1961, more and more immigrants have come form Asia and the Middle east Canada is considered a cultural mosaic due to the diversity present in CanadaHigh Culture and Popular Culture

o High culture – to referred to cultural patterns that distinguish a society’s elite o Popular culture – designated cultural patterns that are widespread throughout the

society Subculture

o Subculture – refers to cultural patterns that set apart some segment of a society’s population

o It is inaccurate to place people in subculture categories – because almost everyone participates simultaneously in numerous subcultures, to which we have various levels of commitment

Multiculturalism o Multiculturalism – is embodied in social policy designed to encourage ethnic or

cultural heterogeneityo Multiculturalists describe this singular pattern in Canada as Eurocentrism – the

dominance of European cultural patternsCounterculture

o Cultural diversity also includes outright rejection of conventional ideas or behaviour o Counterculture – refers to cultural patterns that strongly oppose those widely

accepted within a society Cultural Change

o Cultural change is not only continuous, but change in one dimension in usually associated with other transformations

o Cultural integration – the close relationship among various elements of a cultural system

However, not all elements of a cultural system change at the same speed o Cultural lag – cultural elements changing at different rates, causing various degrees

of disruption in cultural systems Causes of Cultural Change

o Cultural change is set in motion in three ways 1) invention – the process of creating new cultural elements 2) discovery – involves recognizing and understanding something not fully

understood before 3) diffusion – the spread of cultural traits from one society to another

Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism o Given that a particular culture is the basis for each person’s reality, it is no wonder

that people everywhere exhibit ethnocentrism – the practice of judging another culture by the standards of one’s own

Even though, some degree of ethnocentrism is necessary for people to be emotionally attached to their way of life, ethnocentrism also generates misunderstanding and conflict

o The logical alternative to ethnocentrism is cultural relativism – the practice of judging a culture by its own standards

However, it can be difficult for traveller to adopt since it requires not only openness to unfamiliar values and norms but also the ability to put aside cultural standards we have know all our lives

The functions of culture: structural functional analysis o The structural – functional approach explains culture as a complex strategy for

meeting human needs o Cultural values direct our lives, give meaning to what we do, and bind people

together o Cultural universals – refers to traits that are part of every known culture

Evolution and Culture: Socio-biology o Socio-biology – a theoretical approach that explores the ways in which human

biology affects how we create culture Culture and Human Freedom

o Culture as constraint We only know our world in terms of our culture

o Culture as freedom Culture is changing and offers a variety of opportunities Sociologists share the goal of learning more about cultural diversity

Chapter 3 – Society

Society – refers to people who interact in a defined territory and share a culture

Gerhard and Jean Lenski: Society and Technology

Socio-cultural evolution – to mean changes that occur as a society gains new technology

Karl Marx: Society and Conflict

At the heart of Marx’s thinking is the idea of social conflict – the struggle between segments of society over valued resources For Marx, however, the most important type of social conflict was class conflict arising from the way a society produces material goods Society and Production

o Capitalists – people who own and operate factories and other businesses in pursuit of profits

o Capitalism turns most of the population into industrial workers, whom Marx called proletarians – people who sell their labour for wages

o All societies are composed of social institutions – the major spheres of social life, or societal subsystems, organized to meet human needs

o False consciousness – explanations of social problems as the shortcomings of individuals rather than as the flaws of society

Marx was saying, in effect, that it is the system of capitalist production and not people who make society so unequal. False consciousness, he continued, hurts people by hiding the real cause of their problems.

Conflict and History o For Marx, conflict is the engine that drives social change

Sometimes societies change at a slow, evolutionary rate, but they make erupt in rapid, revolutionary change

o Early hunters and gatherers formed primitive communist societies Communism is a system by which people commonly own and equally share

the food and other things they produce o With technological advance comes social inequality

Among horticultural, pastoral, and early agrarian societies- which Marx lumped together as the “ancient world” – warfare was frequent, and the victors made their captive slaves

Capitalism and class conflict o Industrial capitalism, like earlier types of society, contains two major social classes –

the ruling class, whose members (capitalists or bourgeoisie) own productive property, and the oppressed (proletarians), who sell their labour – reflecting the two basic positions in the productive system

o Marx used the term class conflict – to refer to conflict between entire classes over the distribution of a society’s wealth and power

o Class consciousness – workers’ recognition of themselves as a class unified in opposition to capitalists and ultimately to capitalism itself

Capitalism and Alienation o Marx also condemned capitalist society for producing alienation – the experience of

isolation and misery resulting from powerlessness To the capitalists, the workers are nothing more than a source of labour, to

be hired and fired at will o Marx noted four ways in which capitalism alienates workers:

Alienation from the act of working Alienation from the product of work Alienation from other workers Alienation from human potential

o Marx viewed alienation, in its various forms, as a barrier to social change Revolution

o The only way out of the trap of capitalism, argued Marx, is to remake society o He imagined a system of production that could provide for the social needs of all

people He called this system socialism – is a system of production that could provide

for the social needs of all

Max Weber: The Rationalization of Society

Weber understood the power of technology, and he shared many of Marx’s ideas about social conflict. But he disagreed with Marx’s philosophy of materialism

o Weber’s philosophical approach called idealism – emphasized how human ideas – especially beliefs and values shape society.

o He argued that societies differ not in terms of how people produce things but in how people think about the world

o Weber compared societies in different times and places. To make the comparisons, he relied on the ideal type – an abstract statement of the essential characteristics of any social phenomenon

The world views: tradition and rationality o Rather than categorizing societies according to their technology or productive

systems, Weber focused on ways that people think about their world By tradition – Weber meant values and beliefs passed from generation to

generation o People in modern societies, however, favour rationality – a way of thinking that

emphasizes deliberate, matter-of-fact calculation of the most efficient way to accomplish a particular task

o Weber viewed both the Industrial Revolution and the development of capitalism as evidence of modern rationality

Such changes are all part of the rationalization of society – the historical change from tradition to rationality as the main mode of human thought

Weber’s great thesis: Protestantism and Capitalism o Weber claimed that they key to the birth of industrial capitalism lay in the

Protestant Reformation He saw industrial capitalism as the major outcome of Calvinism, a Christian

religious movement founded by John Calvin Calvinists approached life in a highly disciplined and rational ways. One of

Calvin’s most important ideas was predestination – the belief that an all-knowing and all-powerful God had predestined some people for salvation and others for damnation

Rational Social Organization o Weber went on to identify seven characteristics of rational social organization:

1) Distinctive social institutions 2) large-scale organization 3) specialized tasks 4) personal discipline 5) awareness of time 6) technical competence 7) impersonality All these characteristics can be found in one important expression of

modern rationality: bureaucracy

Emile Durkheim: Society and function

In Durkheim’s ideas we find another important vision of human society Structure: society beyond ourselves

o Durkheim’s great insight was recognizing that society exists beyond ourselves – society is more than the individuals who compose it

o Patterns of human behaviour – cultural norms, values, beliefs – exist as established structures, or social facts – that have an objective reality beyond the lives of individuals

o Durkheim claimed, society takes on a life of its own and demands a measure of obedience from its creators – once created by people

Function: society as system o Having established that society has structure, Durkheim turned to the concept of

function – the significance of any social fact – he explained, is more than what individuals see in their immediate lives; social facts help society as a while to operate

Personality: society in ourselves o Durkheim said that society is not only ‘beyond ourselves’ but also ‘in ourselves’, in

helping to form our personalities. How we act, think and feel is drawn from the society that nurtures us

Modernity and Anomie o Durkheim acknowledged the advantages of modern-day freedom, but he warned of

increase anomie – a condition in which society provides little moral guidance to individuals

o Durkheim explained, an individual’s desires must be balanced by the claims and guidance of society

Evolving societies: the division of labour o Durkheim used the term mechanical solidarity – to refer to social bonds, based on

common sentiments and shared moral values, that are strong among members of pre-industrial societies

Is based on likeness Durkheim called these bonds ‘mechanical’ because people are linked

together in lockstep o Modern life creates a new type of solidarity. Durkheim called this new social

integration organic solidarity – defined as social bonds, based on specialization and interdependence, that are strong among members of industrial societies

This now based on differences among people who find that their specialized work – as plumbers, students makes them rely on other people for most of their daily needs

o For Durkheim, the key to change in society is an expanding division of labour – or specialized economic activity

What holds societies together?o Marx: saw in society not unity but social division based on class

Elites may force an uneasy peace, but true social unity can occur only if production becomes a co-operative process

o Weber: the members of a society share a world view Just as tradition joined people together in the past, so modern societies have

created rational, large-scale organizations that connect people’s lives o Durkheim: made solidarity the focus of his work. He contrasted the mechanical

solidarity of pre-industrial societies, which is based on share morality, with modern society’s organic solidarity, which is based on specialization

How have societies changed?o Marx: notes historical differences in productivity, yet pointed to continuing social

conflict, except perhaps among egalitarian hunter/gatherers Modern society is distinctive mostly because it brings that conflict out into

the open o Weber: considered the question of change from the perspective of how people look

at the world Members of pre-industrial societies have a traditional outlook; modern

people have a rational world view o Durkheim: traditional societies are characterized by mechanical solidarity based on

moral cohesion In industrial societies, mechanical solidarity gives way to organic solidarity

based on productive specialization Why do societies change?

o Marx: materialist approach highlights the struggle between classes as the engine of change, pushing societies toward revolution

o Weber: pointed out that ideas contribute to social change He demonstrated how a particular world view – Calvinism – set in motion

the Industrial Revolution, which ended up reshaping many societies o Durkheim: pointed to an expanding division of labour as the key dimension of social

change

Chapter 5 – Socialization

Social experience: the key to our humanity

Sociologists use the term socialization – to refer to the lifelong social experience by which people develop their human potential and learn culture Social experience is also the foundation of personality – a person’s fairly consistent patterns of acting, thinking, and feelingHuman Development: nature and nurture The social science: the role of nurture

o John B. Watson developed a theory called behaviourism – which holds that behaviour is not instinctive but learned

o Without denying the importance of nature, then, we can correctly say that nurture matters more in shaping human behaviour. More precisely, nurture is our nature

Social isolationo Study of Anne – shows cutting people off from the social world is very harmful

Understanding Socialization o Socialization is a complex, lifelong process

Sigmund Freud’s Elements of Personality o Basic human needs

He theorized that humans have two basic needs or drives that are present at birth

First is a need for sexual and emotional bonding which he called the ‘life instinct’ or eros

Second, we share an aggressive drive called the ‘death instinct’ or thanatoso Freud’s model of personality

Freud combined basic needs and the influence of society into a model of personality with three parts: id, ego and superego

The id – represents the human being’s basic drives which are unconscious and demand immediate satisfaction – id is present at birth

ego – which is a person’s conscious efforts to balance innate pleasure-seeking drives with the demands of society – the ego developed as we become aware of ourselves

superego – is the cultural values and norms internalized by an individual o personality development

culture, in the form of the superego, represses selfish demands, forcing people to look beyond their own desires

often the competing demands of self and society result in a compromise that Freud called sublimation – redirect selfish drives into socially acceptable behaviour

Carol Gilligan’s theory of gender and moral development o He compared the moral development of girls and boys – concluded that two

genders use different standards of rightness o Boys have a justice perspective – meaning that they rely on formal rules to define

right and wrong. Girl in contrast, have a care & responsibility perspective – judging a situation with an eye towards personal relationships

o Gilligan’s work sharpens our understanding of both human development and gender issues in research

George Herbert Mead’s Theory of the Social self o George Herbert Mead developed a theory of social behaviourism – to explain how

social experience develops an individual’s personality o The self

Mead’s central concept is the self – the part of an individual’s personality composed of self-awareness and self-image

First, Mead said the self is not there at birth – it develops - in other words, the self is not part of the body – does not exist at birth

Second, Mead explained the self develops only with social experience – as the individual interacts with others – without interaction, the body grows but no self emerges (example of isolated children)

Third, Mead said, social experience is the exchange of symbols - only people use words, a wave of the hand, or a smile to create meaning

Fourth, Mead stated that seeking meaning leads us to imagine the intentions of others

Fifth, Mead explained that understanding intention requires imagining the situation from the other’s point of view

All social interaction involves seeing ourselves as others see us – a process that Mead termed taking the role of the other

o The looking-glass self Charles Horton Cooley used the phrase looking-glass self – to mean a

self-image based on how we think others see us o The I and the Me

Mead’s sixth point that, by taking the role of the other, we become self-aware – is another way of saying this is that that the self has two parts

One part of the self operates as subject, being active and spontaneous – Mead called the active side of the self the I

The other part of the self works as an object, the way we imagine others see us – Mead called the objective side of the self the me

o Development of the self According to Mead, the key to developing the self is learning to take the role

of the other – with limited social experience, infants can do this only through imitation – they mimic behaviour without understanding underlying intentions

As children learn to use language and other symbols, the self emerges in the form of play – play involves assuming roles modelled on significant others – such as parents, who have special importance for socialization

Gradually, children learn to take the roles of several others at once – this skill lets them move from simple play with one other person to complex games involving many others

Final stage: Mead used the term generalized other – to refer to widespread cultural norms and values we use as a reference in evaluating ourselves

Mead concluded, we play a key role in our own socialization
