Free Software

Freedom to:

● run the program for any purpose● study how the program works, and change it to make

it do what you wish● redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor● improve the program, and release your

improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits

Free Software development

● concept of community

● projects in forges● collaborative work● distributed teams

Free Software development

● concept of community

● projects in forges● collaborative work● distributed teams

↓● one development language → English

● multiples languages for user interface

Multilingual Software

Sw Application

Reuse➢ Non profitable software (Free Software

developed for cooperation projects)

Page 14: Socializing Label Translation for Real Multilingual ... · – Multilingual dictionaries through UNL (UNG, ECU, AU, REDSEA) – UNESCO cathedra in Computational Linguistic (VAI, UNED)

Minority Languages problem

● There are estimated between 5,000 and 7,000 spoken languages worldwide

● So, most of them are minority languages

➢ E.g. Kirundi (Burundi), Oromo (Ethiopia, Kenya), Lingala (DRC), ...

● The absent of minority languages in the software application is distancing millions of people from new technologies

Page 15: Socializing Label Translation for Real Multilingual ... · – Multilingual dictionaries through UNL (UNG, ECU, AU, REDSEA) – UNESCO cathedra in Computational Linguistic (VAI, UNED)

Developers dependent● Main problem (from our point of view):

➢ Adding new languages to a Software Application → involves developers → involves maintenance

● Only the languages of the developers are available at most software applications

➢ English, French, Chinese, Spanish, ...

● Software applications that does not have a continuous maintenance from developers cannot access the incorporation of new languages (general case in cooperation projects)

Page 16: Socializing Label Translation for Real Multilingual ... · – Multilingual dictionaries through UNL (UNG, ECU, AU, REDSEA) – UNESCO cathedra in Computational Linguistic (VAI, UNED)

Software Market● Commercial companies pay translators

➢ Profitable languages (Chinese, Hindi, Spanish, French,...), e.g. Microsoft, …

● Big social networks can easily create big user communities

➢ Google, Twiter, …

● Multiple translation tools for developers

➢ E.g. ➢ TranslationEditorBundle (web base UI

to manage translations at Symfony2)

➢ Translations community at Launchpad

Problem

● What about small software developments?

● How can they access a wide goal market of users translating their user interfaces to multiple languages?

● What about software developed for cooperation?

➢ Little or no budget

➢ Scarcely or no technical maintenance

● Paradox: This kind of software ...➢ Can be reuse by thousands of communities with

similar needs

➢ One priority goal is bringing ICTs closer to people at developing countries, isolated communities,...

Socialization Proposal

● Goal → design a ● label translation procedure

● Socialization proposal:● users instead of developers

● Community potential

● Key → automation of new languages incorporations

● non developers dependent

Conclusions● Key of multilingual applications:

➢ Socialization of translations

● Adequate for Free SW applications ➢ Community concept → translations

● Incorporation of new languages➢ without developers intervention

● Great opportunity ➢ for minority languages

➢ for people to access ICTs (cooperation for development projects)

Page 43: Socializing Label Translation for Real Multilingual ... · – Multilingual dictionaries through UNL (UNG, ECU, AU, REDSEA) – UNESCO cathedra in Computational Linguistic (VAI, UNED)

Future Work

● Looking for available extensions, libraries, tools for automatizing socialization of translations

● Developing and improving them → Priority for UCD

● Include the proposal in all our applications

➢ multilingual dictionaries project

➢ cooperation tourism project

● Evaluating the experience
