Social Studies - Kindergarten Monday, May 4 – Friday, May 8 PURPOSE Building on content from previous units, students have learned about families of the past and families of today, as well as being a responsible citizen and learning how they are a part of a community. Grade Level Expectations: (New Material) K.2.4 I can recall facts about people in the past. I can recall facts about people in the present. WATCH Guiding Questions: Who are some important people in history? How have these people influenced history? Monday: Watch intro Long Ago and Now Video to review concept of past and present. View images of school buses and classes from long ago in Louisiana. Tuesday: Watch George Washington Video to learn important facts about our first president and famous leader. Wednesday: Read aloud the passage Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison to learn important facts about these famous inventors. Thursday: Watch George Washington Carver Video to learn important facts about this famous scientist. PURPOSE

Monday: After watching the video Long Ago and Now, and looking at school images you can see that life was different long ago. Think of a few ways life was different in the past compared to today. Complete a Venn Diagram comparing life long ago with life now. Draw a picture and label 3 ways life was different long ago and three ways life is different now. In the center draw and label at least one way life is alike.

Tuesday: Remember that we are all part of the larger American community within the United States. Many famous Americans lived long ago in our country. Each famous American from long ago did something special to help their community. Sing George Washington Song to review facts learned about George Washington, our first president and famous leader. Begin a daily Journal called “Famous Americans”. Draw a picture of George Washington and write one or more sentences about the most important facts you learned about his life in your journal. Wednesday: Complete daily Journal page of Famous Americans for either Ben Franklin or Thomas Edison. (Screen Free Activity) (Optional) Listen to the story Now and Ben to learn additional facts about Ben Franklin. (Optional)Watch video Thomas Edison and the Light Bulb to learn additional facts about Thomas Edison. Thursday: Complete daily Journal page of Famous Americans for George Washington Carver. (Screen Free Activity)

Friday: Choose one famous person from history you have learned about this week. It can be a person from the past or a person from the present. Complete the My Famous Person Project. Write your person’s name in the center box. Draw a picture of your famous person, include important facts, character traits, and write a few sentences explaining why this person is important to you. (Screen Free Activity) Additional Screen Free Activities- May 4-8 Interview a family member asking facts about any Famous Americans from their childhood. Create a list of questions you would want to ask in your interview. Create a time-line to show major life events of a famous person in history you choose. Continue to record information and draw pictures about Famous Americans on journal pages. Dress up like your famous person and do a short skit for your family or friends telling them about important facts you learned. Create a Then and Now poster of different types of famous people in history.
