In a Nutshell
(Later I’m going to tell you that you should start with a strategy.)
Facebook• Join as you (a human being)• Set up a Fan Page for the organization• Get the Causes application and set up your
Cause• Accept donations (requires registration with
Guidestar)• Consider setting up Groups and Events• Converse!
• Set up a Twitter account• Create a background (but don’t stress about it)• Figure out who’s going to post (tweet)• Set up a calendar and some goals• Be conversational
Example of a Twitter PlanSuggested rules:• Be an advocate• Engage with others - make conversation• Go for quantity AND quality• Link to longer blog posts
Metrics:• Number of new followers• Number of tweets• What ratio of following to followers?• Number of direct messages• Number of retweets• Number of “Follow Friday” recommendations
(Thanks to Jen McCabe of PolarWisdom)
Why?
• Low cost: maybe free? (Value of time)• It's quick• You can do it yourself• Build relationships with your constituents• It can build presence and visibility (more links)• It’s expected (“Why aren’t you on Facebook?”)
Why?@RMHCAustinNonprofits should use soc med 1. to be in the conversation 2. our people are using it. 3. as a significant piece of our web presence.
@dpburksNP's should use social media to keep constituents engaged
@kimloopIt's the new grassroots organizing while improving/maintaining your organization's profile by going where people are.
@MackReedSocial media is the lingua franca of upscale, communicative potential donors (among others). Charities need to speak that language.
Why Not?
• Learning curve• Time• Writing• Legal issues• There’s a monster under
the bed
Three Uses of Social Media
1. Finding an audience, getting attention2. Making connections (networking)3. Forming community, sharing relationships
Do you want to do one, more, or all of the above?
The Internet is a vast network of networks, with many channels. Where is your voice in the global evolving mix?
Work Your Network!
FIRST: Define Your Strategy
• What do you care about? What are your goals and how do they translate into action?
• Beyond the mission statement: what is your story? How do you incorporate your goals, focus, and actions into a narrative?
• What are you trying to accomplish with your Internet presence.
Thanks!
