Our Youth Fellowship this time organised the Centre Youth Meet which was held at our Church on the 16th of September. The Centre Meet was well attended by the youths of all sister parishes and was led by our Youth Chaplain Rev. Roby J. Mathew.

As in the past, our Yuvajana Sakhyam celebrated Onam with a musical programme titled "Swararagam" and followed by the

traditional Onam lunch. A large number of our parish members participated in the Onam celebration.

From the Medical Desk… HEALTH AWARENESS

A new medical term has been coined. It is a combination of Diabetes and

Obesity – Diabesity. Over 1 billion people are said to be affected by this directly

or indirectly. Diabetes, metabolic syndrome, Insulin resistance and obesity

have reached epidemic proportions and it is important to spread the message

that these are preventable and to a certain extent reversible health problems.

Children need to be especially informed.

The problem is a combination of obesity, abnormal cholesterol, high blood

pressure and high blood sugar levels. It is also important to remember that all features may not be present in everyone

and so there may be thin people (without Obesity) also with diabetes and abnormal cholesterol levels.

Obesity is defined as a BMI of more than 30. BMI can be calculated from a person’s weight and height. Abnormal

Cholesterol or Dyslipidemia is a combination of low HDL, high LDL and high Triglycerides. High BP is anything beyond

140/90 mmhg and high blood sugar is defined as fasting sample above 100 mg/dl.

Symptoms include Fatigue, frequent urination, weight loss, numbness in feet, visual difficulties, sexual difficulties and

Increased hunger and thirst. Diabesity is the leading cause of modern, chronic disease. The “diabese” have increased risk

of heart disease, stroke, dementia, cancer, kidney failure and blindness – to name only a few.

The treatment includes specific treatments for Diabetes, Hypertension and Dyslipidemia in addition to general methods

to reduce weight, increase exercise, stop smoking, alcohol and reduce stress. These strategies have been dismal so far

and hence we have ever growing numbers of new patients. This brings us back to “Prevention is better than Cure “.
