SYNOPSIS The Snowy Day and Other Stories is a play adapted from Ezra Jack Keats' four picture books, The Snowy Day, Whistle for Willie, Goggles!, and A Letter to Amy. It features Peter, an African American boy, who explores his neighborhood after the season’s first snowfall. Peter wakes up to the season’s first snowfall. In his bright red snowsuit, he goes outside and makes footprints and trails through the snow. Peter is too young to join a snowball fi ght with older kids, so he makes a snowman and snow angels and slides down a hill. He returns home with a snowball stashed in his pocket. Before he goes to bed, Peter is sad to discover the snowball has melted. The next day, he wakes up to tons more falling snow. With a friend, he ventures outside again. Whistle for Willie finds Peter, a little older, learning patience and perseverance. He hears the whistling of an older boy to his dog, so Peter decides he wants to whistle so he can call his dog, Willie. Even though Peter tries really hard, he can't seem to master whistling. With the encouragement of his parents and some hard work on his part, Peter is finally triumphant. In Goggles! Peter and his best friend Archie find motorcycle goggles near their hideout. They have fun imagining different scenarios and uses for the goggles until they encounter some "big boys" that want to take the goggles from them. They get a surprise from Peter's dog and end the day safe with their prize. In A Letter to Amy, Peter is having a birthday party, and he's asked all of his friends to come. But Amy is a special friend because she's a girl, so Peter decides to send her a special invitation. When he rushes out in a thunderstorm to mail it, he encounters some unexpected challenges. Will Amy actually get his invitation and come?
