IntroductionThe Snowy Mountain Scheme took 25 years to build and $820 million was invested. 100 000 men and women came from over 30 different countries to help work on the scheme.

Snowy in the 19th CenturyThe 1820’s were extremely hard for the indigenous Australians for they were gradually dispossessed as colonists from Europe came.

A Wasted Resource? The Snowy River was regarded as a wasted resource by non-indigenous Australians since the water flowed out to sea without reaching farmers inland. The Snowy Hydro Scheme now supplies electricity to New South Wales, Victoria and Australian Capitol Territory.

Environmental and Social CostsGroups did campaign vigorously in the 1990’s to restore more of the rivers flow. After damming the Snowy, people struggled to get enough water for domestic and commercial use.

Environmental and Social BenefitsThe Snowy Mountain Scheme provides about 74% of the available renewable energy on the Eastern part of Australia’s electricity grid. The genius hydro-electricity scheme replaces the displacement of more then 5 million tonnes of ‘greenhouse gases’.

New TownsSome people were happy about moving to a new modern town but others were especially unhappy. Many properties across the Blowering Valley were flooded with the construction of the Blowering and Jounama dams in the 1960’s.

Snowy Scheme Kids1’000’s of kids grew up around the Snowy Mountain Scheme. The presence of so many kids changed the shape of the already existing town. The kids of Jindabyne were very lucky since the Snowy Mountains Authority provided a school building.
