Description International studies show up to 65% of vertical smoke movement in a building is via the lift shaft. The Smoke Guard System (SGS) is an automatic smoke containment screen designed to reduce the movement of smoke beyond the fire floor via lift shafts thereby maintaining an adequate level of visibility and reducing the effects of toxic smoke to assist occupants in exiting a building in a fire — or prolong the tenability conditions until assistance arrives. The System incorporates a unique flexible magnetic temperature resistant translucent screen contained in a steel housing. This housing is typically mounted above a lift landing door and concealed within a suspended ceiling or bulkhead. Operation On the receipt of an alarm signal the system deploys, rolling down the face of the lift door opening. A flexible magnet seals against the 430 grade magnetic stainless steel auxiliary rails (or magnetic architrave of the lift door frame if available). If occupants wish to pass through the smoke barrier, a rewind switch located on both sides of the screen approximately 1000mm from the ground can be activated. The smoke containment screen is designed to completely rewind into the housing, hold for 4-5 seconds allowing the occupant to escape, and redeploy to re-establish the smoke barrier.

Operation cont... On resetting of the alarm a rewind motor automatically rewinds the screen back into the concealed void, and on the Model 400, closing the housing door behind it. The SGS has been specifically designed to be operated “without any special skills or knowledge” as required by US codes to cover most occupant types. It is the only system available on the market today with this feature. The SGS offers optional cove seals at the floor level to further reduce both the rate of smoke leakage and to protect lift operation from the effects of water due to activated sprinklers and fire fighting activities.

Fail safe The Model 400 (M400) System is fail safe, deploying on disruption of primary power (240V). However, built in protection from minor power interruptions or failures with an 8-10 second delay assists in avoiding most nuisance deploys. The System may also be connected to an emergency power supply. Battery back-up The Model 600 (M600) System is supplied with a battery back up system that will hold the unit up for 8-10 days in case of a power failure. If, within this time a fire is detected, the system will deploy as required.

Thermal Patch Each SGS is supplied with a thermal patch located on the inside of the housing door that changes colour on exposure to temperatures around 93 0C. If the SGS is installed in a building where a fire has occurred and the thermal patch colour is unchanged, the system is suitable for re-use. However, if the patch changes colour (or there is obvious physical damage) the system may need replacement. Translucent screen The SGS is the only system available with a translucent screen allowing occupants in the lift, such as fire fighters for example, to survey the environment on the other side of the lift to ensure it is safe to enter. Disabled egress Traditional smoke curtain systems that incorporate side guides can potentially trap occupants inside the lift. Able body people can lift the curtain and climb under, however this is not possible for people with mobility disabilities. The SGS does not discriminate against people with disabilities and can be operate without any special skills or knowledge.

Reliability The SGS is less complex than pressurisation systems providing an increase in system reliability. The system has also been cycle tested in excess of 2000 continuous open and close cycles without failure. The system is also ideal as an alternative to smoke-proof lobbies and is less likely to be chocked open like smoke doors for example, also increasing system reliability. Installation In line with Smoke Controls mission to provide customers with reliable solutions, the SGS is installed by our fully trained and approved installer network. Preparation for installation generally requires sufficient head and side room clearance, provision for 240 Volt primary power and a smoke alarm signal with a normally closed relay for the Model 400 and normally open relay for the Model 600. Please contact our office for a detailed scope of works for the Model 400 & 600. Verification of performance Unlike complex pressurization systems that may take weeks or even months to successfully commission the Smoke Guard System is easily commissioned as soon as power is available. In addition, the system is not susceptible to being chocked open like smoke doors in smoke lobbies or re-commissioning due to internal refurbishments or fit outs like pressurisation systems. Maintenance Annual maintenance and verification of system operation should be conducted by our trained personnel in strict accordance with document numbers 402, Rev 03 and 602, Rev 13 for the Model 400 and 600 respectively. Contact us for details.

Sizes Both models are made to order following site measurement. Typical lead time is 8 weeks. For larger openings please refer to Fiberseal smoke containment screen data sheets in Section 2 of the catalogue or contact us for more information. Project specification “An automatic smoke containment screen, complete with a screen mounted rewind switch and housing door closing device, capable of automatically rewinding completely into an overhead housing shall be installed above each of the designated lift door openings. The system shall be tested in accordance with AS/NZS1530 Part 7 to provide a leakage rate of no more than 51 m3/hr at 25 Pa and 2000C. Or 31m3/hr when corrected to standard temperature and pressure. The smoke containment screen shall be translucent and shall provide a Group 1 classification under the requirements of BCA clause C1.10a when tested to AS/NZS3837. The system shall be Smoke Guard Model 400/600 [specify which]. Note: To accommodate the Smoke Guard System; 1. Refer to system data sheets for required

clearances. 2. Lift control and indicator panels shall

not be installed in the architrave face of the lift door frame.

3. Lift control and indicator panels shall not protrude more than 12mm from the face of the wall.

4. Decorative wall cladding to provide sufficient clearance for auxiliary rails.

Technical details It is now commonly accepted that smoke movement beyond the fire floor can contribute significantly to injury and death in a fire. Typical lift doors can contribute up to 65% of the total vertical movement of smoke to floors above the fire floors1

Other statistics2 show that over 75% of the deaths and injuries in fires are due to the smoke not the fire. A report by Hughes Associates3 provides a hypothetical example of the effectiveness of reducing the smoke leakage through lift doors. The report states; “….the leakage area of the elevator (lift) doors is the primary factor in allowing smoke to migrate to upper floors in a building. If the leakage area of the elevator (lift) doors is controlled to reduced levels then a three fold increase in visibility can be attained on the upper floors of a typical multi-story building regardless of whether the building was sprinklered or not.” The Smoke Guard System is the ideal solution for Fire Safety Engineers to significantly increase the visibility and reduce the amount of toxic smoke in the upper levels of multi-storey buildings to provide quantifiable, easily verifiable egress time for occupants. Resistance to smoke leakage: Although the gaps around the perimeter of lift doors seem relatively small, these gaps are significantly large in terms of smoke leakage. For a typical lift door this leakage can be in excess of 12m3/min per square metre of lift door opening aided by stack, wind and piston effects. Protecting the lift door opening with the SGS reduces this leakage to less than 0.3m3/min per square metre of lift door opening. Resistance to stack, wind & piston effects: Stack and wind effects can overcome pressurisation systems. It is often difficult to design these systems for all potential weather conditions. The Smoke Guard System forms a physical barrier in front of the lift door and has been tested to show that it can withstand pressures up to 75Pa. Chemical resistance: The barrier film used in the Smoke Guard System is resistant to chemical attack. These properties have resulted in various projects in the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industry.

Barrier to water penetration: In multi-storey buildings the Fire Services may choose to use the lift to reach the levels below a fire floor to avoid carrying heavy fire fighting equipment up many floors. Fire fighting activities and water from an activated sprinkler may render lifts unusable. Independent test on the Model 600 Smoke Guard System, complete with cove seals, has shown to significantly reduce the amount of water penetration into the lift.
