2013 is quickly drawing to a close, and what a wonder-ful year it has been. We have had a number of great new members and overall, our clubs and units have had an enjoyable and profitable year.

My thanks to all Nobles, Ladies and members of the Units and Clubs who sup-ported the Nile throughout 2013. Keeping our fraternal

organization active and advertising the great philan-thropic work we do is hugely important. Every activity or event in which we participate helps us spread the word about our great organization.

We have several special events coming up in the next two months, and we hope you will mark your calen-dars and plan to attend. On December 7th we will hold our annual Holiday Ball. Lady Marilyn and I look for-ward to this event each year. A Nile tradition, the ball is a festive way to start the holiday season in style. On January 11th, Nile will hold its annual installa-tion of Officers. All elected and appointed officers of Nile and its Clubs and Units should plan to attend. A Noble must be elected (or appointed) in order to be eligible to hold an office, and installation is required before a Noble can exercise the duties of his office.

You have greatly honored me this year with the op-portunity to be your 2013 Potentate. Nobles and Ladies have been most kind and supportive of both Lady Marilyn and me. During this past year, my goal has been to work for the best interest of the Nile. It is, and has been, my earnest desire to “meet on the level and part upon the square” with peace and harmony prevailing. Lady Marilyn and I love you, our fellow Nobles and Ladies, the Nile and our Shriner’s hospi-tals and kids.

In 2014, I will no longer be a member of your Divan, but I will not disappear from view. Noble Jim Hart, the outstanding director of our world famous Nile Oriental Band, has asked that I take over his position as band director. I have agreed. Jim Hart has had a major role in the success of our band. I will do my best to fill his shoes. In 2014 I also plan to continue my memberships in our Nile Greeters, Zem Zem, Golf Club, Temple Guard and Past Masters clubs and units. These memberships should keep me sufficiently busy to stay out of trouble, and I look forward to spending time with the great Nobles and Ladies of the Nile.

Thank you for all of your support during 2013. Re-member, we are “United for a Noble Cause.”

RED SKELTON AWARDDear Fellow Nobles:

On behalf of Shriners International, I am pleased to announce the creation of the Red Skelton Shriners Community Awareness Award. With membership as our primary focus, this initiative recognizes temples that demonstrate exemplary work in creating a posi-tive Shriners’ identity within their local communities. Inspired by the Masonic Service Association of North America’s (MSANA) Mark Twain Award, the Red Skelton Shriners Community Awareness Award is designed to raise awareness of the Shriners fraternity in an effort to increase both temple membership and patient volumes at Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

Named after one of our own great communicators, Red Skelton, I encourage each temple to develop imaginative and creative ways of engaging and informing the public on both our great organiza-tions. In short, the award’s goal is to promote positive communication among our temples, shrine clubs and the hundreds of thousands of men, whom I have the honor of calling “brother.”

Starting now, every temple must register on Shriners Village (Click Here to Register) by January 31, 2014 to be eligible for the first award which will be presented at the 2014 Imperial Session held in Minneapolis, July 6-10. Once all materials are submitted, the Imperial Public Relations Committee (IPRC) will then evaluate each registered temple’s community awareness initia-tives, activities and resourcefulness. To recognize the winning temples, Potentates and PR Chairmen will be invited to attend the Imperial Potentate’s reception at Session and will receive reserved VIP seating at the 89th East-West Shrine Game® on January 18, 2014. While all details and submission requirements can be found on Shriners Village, please contact the corporate Public Relations Department ([email protected]) for additional information, if needed.

Best of luck to all participating temples and I look forward to the great success of this initiative.

Yours in the faith, John A. Cinotto, Imperial Potentate Setting the Pace for a Strong Future

Director of Uniformed Units

by Jud Chapin, Director of Uniformed Units

Holiday Greetings Nobles,

The holidays are once again upon us and another year has virtually come and gone. With that having been said , I would like to extend my appreciation and thank you to all for your time and participation during the 2013 parade season .

The parade season started in April at La Connor and ended with the last parade of the season in Granite Falls. It was at the La Connor Parade we were in-formed that the Assistant Director had to resign due to health issues. In May we were informed that the Di-rector was moving out of state in June instead of after the parade season. Nick had the parades pretty well established through July. I was asked if I could spell “Director of Uniformed Units” and the next day I was one. It has been a smooth and fun transition with only one real “challenge,” the I-5 Bridge collapse just before the Bellingham Parade.

In preparation for the 2014 season, let’s take time to make sure our equipment is ready for another parade season; trouble free and ready to go. I look forward to seeing you down the road .

Calliope

by Bob T. Wilson, Captain

The Calliope Unit re-elected: Bob T. Wilson - Captain Jud Chapin - 1st Lt. Bob O’Brien - Secretary/Treasurer.

There were 23 new members at the Ceremonial on November 2nd. Welcome, and the Calliope unit would like to encourage new members to consider joining us where you can participate in parades, etc. And, if you play the piano so much the better.

We presently meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 11:30 for lunch and the meeting to follow. These hours could be changed for those working members. Please contact our Secretary, Bob O’Brien at [email protected] for more information and a petition.

Fun On Wheels

by Glenn Bailey, Wagonmaster

Fun on Wheels officers for 2014 are: Jay Sardeson, Wagonmaster; Glenn Bailey, Asst, Wagonmaster; Dick Sellevold, Secretary; Russ Davis, Treasurer.

Congratulations and may you have a successful year. Three outings are already being set up for 2014.

George and Suzanne Young will be our first Trail-bosses for the Chehalis outing in April. Dates to be announced. Show your support for the first RV social event. Let’s get the year off to a good start.

Thanks to everyone who made the November Thanks-giving dinner meeting a truly fine event. Our Decem-ber dinner meeting will be our Holiday social event of the year. Guests are always welcome to our dinner meetings at the Nile in the Red Room. Please plan to attend and enjoy the company of our wonderful members.

For anyone wanting to experience a trail outing with our club, please contact Glenn Bailey at 206-365-8003. You may just want to become a member!

Oriental Band

by Jim Hart

The Nile Oriental Band gave its last performance of the year at the Nile Ceremonial on November 2nd. There were more than 20 band members at this event. We did a great job even if we played one number twice - so who could tell?

The OB Christmas Party will be on Saturday, Decem-ber 14th, in the Potentate’s Lounge. It is necessary that reservations be made by contacting Pasha II Larry Gillespie. Members who desire to participate in a gift exchange ($20 minimum) can do so. Please mark your gift either “M” or “F” for obvious reasons.

Elections will be held at the business meeting on De-cember 10th.

OB dues of $20 are now being collected and if you want to be included in the 2014 OB Directory, pay your dues right away!

Shurtah

Sportsmen’s Club

Howdy all. It has been a great year for our club.

We enjoyed working with the Friends of the NRA and helping them this year.

We have our new Logo and are in the process of making jackets with our name and alias on the front, the Logo on the Back (which is really cool) and the American Flag on the Sleeve.

Our 2014 calendar will be filled with Camping and fishing trips, happenings at the Masonic Family Park, WA Hunter Education classes, speakers, Murder Mys-tery Dinner Event, working with the cub scouts, air rifle and archery events, gold panning, outings, Friends of the NRA Banquet on May 3rd and much more.

We are also gearing up for a Membership Drive. Our membership committee will let prospective members know what we are all about.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: We are finishing our new clubhouse. It’s looking great and next to it will be an air rifle/archery area. All brand new.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, December 10th at 6:00 pm, beginning with refreshments and snacks. Come check us out, you will be glad you did. For more info, call 206-235-7714 and ask for Bob

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Ladies’ Golf Club

by Sheri Baker

As we get ready to say goodbye to 2013 it’s a perfect time to reflect on this past golf season. How fortunate we were to have such pleasant weather and to enjoy the company of friends and fellow golf members.

Thank you to every one who contributed to making the Ladies Division a fun place to be every Tuesday. If you were there for the competition or for a fun game, this time of year is sad. However, we will again meet next March.

A special thank you to our Pro, Joe Korn and his wonderful staff for being there whether it’s checking us in every week or answering rules questions, you’re the best. Also, a big thank you to the amazing grounds crew for their tireless efforts in keeping the Nile Shrine Golf Course a great place to play.

Eastside Shrine Club

by Jim Hart

At the Eastside Shrine Club meeting of October 23 there were 28 attending. A very good crowd. All Nobles in attendance were wearing their fezzes, that is except the Potentate. He forgot his. But that was ok, he paid the fine.

With their two daughters now gone from the nest, Molly and John Boose found their house was far larger than they needed so they moved to West Seattle to a condo with a great view. They plan to keep their membership in Eastside SC.

Dick Eakins said that Bill and Ellen Kowalik sold their penthouse in Florida and moved into a care facility. Bill is 93, sharp of mind but vision about gone. He still does his stocks and bonds by telephone. No computer for him.

The meeting of November 20th was at the Big Fish. John DeCarteret, president, offered to again handle these duties in 2014. Henrietta Armfield agreed to continue to send the email announcements. John plans to get with the other officers and see about some sort of fund raiser and how to improve the meetings. We could play Bingo as we do have the equipment.

President John announced that annual dues of $20 are now payable. All Shriners and their ladies are welcome to attend our luncheons especially those residing on the Eastside. Just call Henrietta at 425 836-1278.

Dear Fellow Nobles,

After just a few months into the new Imperial Year, we have received a remarkable response to our goal of membership recruitment and sustainability as well as to our newly implemented programs. Our new programs, such as the Pace Program: Setting the Pace for a Strong Future and The Red Skelton Community Awareness Award, were established to re-energize the nobility to renew their own commitment as a Shriner and to both our organizations. As of to date, more than 50 temples have registered for the Pace Pro-gram, 10 have scheduled dates for their first kick-off meeting, and five temples have completed their first session. This program is available to all temples that have a strong commitment to our membership goals; I encourage all temples to take advantage of this invalu-able resource.

During the 27th annual Shriners International Mem-bership Seminar in Tampa, Fla., our executive leader-ship touched on the importance and power of every noble’s dedication to our membership goals. A wide range of topics, including the Membership Develop-ment System (MDS), mentorship, the three R’s of membership (Relationships, Relationships, Relation-ships) and the importance of the involvement of our ladies were discussed. The keynote speakers provided tangible action plans for recruitment, noble participa-tion within the temples, and communication plans, that can be customized to fit temple-specific initiatives. I urge every Potentate and Divan member to use the information provided to maximize their efforts at the temple level.

One of the highlights during the membership seminar was a focus on the importance of mentorship. Deputy Imperial Potentate Dale Stauss made a key distinction between traditional mentorship and Shrine mentorship:

Mentorship: A personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowl-edgeable person.

Shrine Mentorship: Providing immediate brotherly love to our newest members.

Given this definition, every one of us can be a men-tor. I ask each of you to mentor your temple’s new members. We need to be aware of the critical impor-tance of the first few years of membership in terms of retention. Think back to your own experience as a new member, and remember the importance of being welcomed and included, and help provide that experi-ence for our new nobles.

The membership seminar was both productive and ef-fective, and I thank and congratulate everyone involved in providing such an informative, successful event.

A great example for both our existing and new nobility to further our fun and fellowship is by participating in our national events. The Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren Open kicked off earlier this month in Las Vegas in an effort to promote the mission behind our philan-thropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children®. While many of us are not be able to attend our national events, I encourage all temples and shrine clubs to host “watch” parties to cheer on and support our awareness efforts.

Also, in just three months’ time the best collegiate football athletes will travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., to display their remarkable talents at the East-West Shrine Game® on January 18, 2014. The game will be broadcast live on NFL Network as well on both 620 WDAE (in the Tampa Bay area) and the East-West Shrine Game channel via the “TuneIn” mobile appli-cation for smart phones. The game operations office has made special reserved seating available to members of the fraternity and their guests. For more informa-tion, please call 813-281-8642.

We also traveled to Washington, D.C. this month along with leaders and members of the International Association Legions of Honor for the annual laying of the Shrine wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The monument stands in recognition of the services of an unidentified soldier and to the common memories of all soldiers killed in any war. Since 1872, thousands of our own brothers have served in the armed forces and we pay tribute to each of their sacrifices. As a veteran of the U.S. Army, I salute the many men, including our brother veterans and current brother soldiers who have risked their lives for peace.

As we move into the holiday season, First Lady Mar-garet and I wish you and yours a blessed and memo-rable Thanksgiving. I am certainly thankful to be part of such a wonderful organization of men whom I have the honor of calling “brother” and to have the abil-ity to contribute to making a difference in the lives of countless children. We are incredibly blessed to have each other as a collective brotherhood and I know, to-gether, we will ensure its strong and successful future.

Yours in the faith, John A. Cinotto, Imperial Potentate Setting the Pace for a Strong Future

Medicare - Part I of IIIIf you are of Medicare age, you probably have been inundated recently with ads telling you why one insur-ance plan is better than another or trying to scare you with threats of the effects of Obamacare on Medicare. Yes, tis the season of Enrollment Periods for Medicare, a time to consider making changes to your existing Medicare Plans. Medicare’s Open Enrollment period gives all beneficiaries the opportunity to make changes to their plans as their lives and needs change.

Medicare policies and coverage change periodically. It’s important to keep up on what these changes are, what they mean and how they affect you. Whether you are happy with your Medicare plan, the changes made to your plan may alter that. For any pending changes, a beneficiary should receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). Most people will receive this docu-ment in the fall. Take time to review these changes and be aware of which plans they effect. Take special notice of the benefits and disadvantages that these changes create. Also please note when these changes take effect to ensure your coverage needs are well, covered.

Recurring Enrollment PeriodsOctober 15th to December 7th the following changes can be made:

• Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Ad-vantage Plan (Part C).

• Change from a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) back to Original Medicare.

• Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) to another Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)

• Switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) that doesn’t offer drug coverage to a Medicare Advan-tage Plan (Part C) that offers drug coverage.

• Join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.

• Switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) to another Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D).

• Drop your Medicare Prescription Drug coverage (Part D) completely.

January 1st to February 14th the following changes can be made:

• Change Medicare Advantage Plans to Original Medicare. Changes will begin the first day of the fol-lowing month.

• If you switch to Original Medicare during this period, you will have until February 14th to also join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to add drug cover-age. Changes will begin the first day of the following month after the plan gets your enrollment form.

What you CANNOT do during this period:

Ø Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advan-tage Plan.

Ø Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another.

Ø Switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another.

Ø Join, switch or drop a Medicare Medical Savings.

If you have questions or need assistance with any of the many issues of aging, please feel free to contact Mary Craves-Hollands, Director of Masonic Out-reach Services at 206-878-8434/1-800-820-4630 Ext. 101 or [email protected].

INTERESTED IN A MOTORCYCLE CLUB

AT NILE?We are still trying to form a regular motorcycle riding club at Nile. A minimum of 10 Nobles are needed in or-der to form the club. If one was formed we would have monthly meetings, plan money makers, have monthly rides, organize social events with family members and ride in parades without special maneuvers. Ladies would not be allowed to ride in the parades with us but could participate in all other activities. Anyone inter-ested in starting this club, please contact Dave Brady at [email protected] or 425-481-0159.

In the near future we will plan to meet at the Nile for all who are interested in this club. We may even plan a ride on a Saturday starting with breakfast at the 19th Hole. One idea is to have our monthly Breakfast or Lunch meetings on Saturdays and after the meeting go on rides or activities. Keep checking the SWN for more information.

Administrator UpdateHospital administrator Craig ‘Patch’ Patchin reported that October was a productive month, with 153 new patient referrals. The Hospital is exploring the pos-sibility of a new fracture clinic - watch for continuing progress on this.

Medical Staff Update Congratulations to Dr. Michael Sussman, who was named medical honoree by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Michael D. Sussman, MD received his orthopaedic training at Johns Hopkins University and completed a pediatric orthopaedic fellowship at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. From 1976 to 1992, he was in the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, and at the time of his departure was director of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics. He moved to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Portland, Oregon in 1992 as chief of the medical staff and helped develop a variety of programs including designating clinics for children with neuromuscular diseases, a special clinic for children with skeletal dysplasia, as well as insuring continuity of care for patients at the Shriners Hospital.

Strategic Plan Update The Strategic Planning team continues work on the Hospital’s plan, taking into account the informa-tion received in September from the Home Office. The goals set for the Hospital are ambitious and the staff is working hard to determine a path to make them attainable.

Clinical Services Update The regional director of Orthotics and Prosthetics, JoAnne Kanas, visited the Portland orthotics and prosthetics shop and was impressed with the way the department runs. The department will soon be work-ing with the Honolulu hospital to do the fabrication of Prosthetics and Orthotics for its patients.

The annual donation of durable medical equipment from ABATE took place on October 12, with four children receiving equipment. Three of the children received power wheelchairs, and one young man received a hand bike. The day was capped off with comments from the grateful patient’s families.

Members of the Rehab department also shared with the Board information about the new Google Glass. Hospital patients have the opportunity to trial this technology early and provide feedback, in hopes to help influence future applications that will make Glass simple and useful for persons with disabilities.

Community Relations Update The Community Affairs department reported a visit by the new marketing company 1st Degree, which re-places Leo Burnett for its advertising and nationwide public relations efforts.

The annual food caravan was held on October 19th with a total of $151,553.49 in cash and material dona-tions. Thanks to everyone involved in this successful caravan, the hospital continues to be the grateful recipient of this long standing event.

Be sure your Divan members have marked their cal-endars for April 27th and 28th for the Hospital’s Divan Days. Next year’s conference is shaping up to be a wonderful education opportunity, celebrating the past and planning for the future.

The Hospital is also gearing up to celebrate the year 2014 as its 90th Anniversary. Kick-off for the year will be held on the Hospital’s actual birthday, Janu-ary 15th. More details on anniversary activities will be published shortly. If you haven’t “liked” the Hospital facebook page, www.facebook.com/shrinershospital.portland, please do and look for more fun updates about the 90th Anniversary.

The Portland hospital is taking part in an incred-ible fundraising opportunity offered to them by the new WinCo Foods Portland Open, a PGA Tour-sanctioned men’s professional golf event coming to Portland August 18-24, 2014. The event will be the regular season finale on the Web.com Tour, in which 25 PGA TOUR cards will be awarded on Sunday of the tournament at the exclusive Witch Hollow course at Pumpkin Ridge. The Nabisco TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ program has offered Shriners Hospitals for Children-Portland the opportunity to sell their tournament tickets and keep 100% of every dollar they sell to put toward funding their programs. www.wincofoodsportlandopen.com/Public/tickets.php?C=SHR
