Principal’s Message— Mr. B. White
O ur Founders Day Concert was a wonderful event bringing the school
community together to celebrate with music the founding of our school.
This year, our celebration included the first ever performance of the Mass of
Saint Michael the Archangel by renowned composer, Paul Halley, commis-
sioned by Cardinal Collins. It was wonderful to hear the sound of the entire
student body singing together at the conclusion of the concert. For those
families new to our school, it powerfully conveyed a sense of community
achieved through music. With students from Grade 3 to Grade 12, the
school‘s mission, ‗to educate boys to become men through the service of sa-
cred music‘, was evident for all to see and hear.
Our second annual Alumni Homecoming event was a success. It was great to hear from the for-
mally constituted Alumni Association and to connect with past students and staff at the reception
that followed the mass.
Our Strategic Renewal continued in October as Arthur Haberman held several sessions, meeting
with teachers, with alumni and with parents. If you haven‘t had a chance to participate yet, Arthur
will be holding another open forum on the evening of Tuesday November 19th.
In the pages that follow, you can see how busy our students and staff have been over the past
month, both in and beyond the classroom. We head into November looking forward to progress
reports, parent interviews, Remembrance Day, in addition to all of the various extra-curricular ac-
tivities as we gear up for Massey Hall with rehearsals, ticket sales and run-out concerts. We look
forward to seeing many of you as we gather for our multi-cultural pot-luck dinner on Friday,
November 8th!
WELCOME!!!!!!!
W e are pleased to welcome Mr S. Rubacha who has assumed
the position of teacher for our Grade 7 and 8 English
classes, taking over from Mr. Lewis who has gone to the board to
help in-service teachers on the use of technology. Mr Rubacha joins
our team bringing with him experience at the intermediate level,
experience and interest in the use of technology in the classroom,
experience with coaching and with student leadership initiatives. He
has been in communication with Mr Lewis in order to provide conti-
nuity for our intermediate students. We are pleased to have Mr
Rubacha join our teaching team and I know that you will welcome
him into our school community when you have the opportunity to
meet him.

Director’s Message—Mr. S. Handrigan
October has been a very exciting month here at SMCS.
A s you know, this year we are engaged in a Strategic Renewal process. Since late
last spring, our facilitator, Dr. Arthur Haberman has been busy meeting with stu-
dents, faculty, parents, alumni and friends of the school. The discussions have been rich
and we are now beginning to shape the plan for the future. Mark your calendars - our
next Open House will take place on Tuesday, November 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the audito-
rium. I invite you all to attend this Open House to share your ideas.
Our Founder‘s Day Concert on October 18th was an outstanding success. The choirs sounded fantastic and I
would like to take this opportunity to thank the conductors for their hard work in preparing the choirs. I would
also like to extend a special thank you to the entire faculty and support staff for all of their ―behind the
scenes‖ work. The concert was very well attended and our free will offering raised $3,500.00. Thank you to
Andrea Ronan, Msgr. Ronan‘s great niece, who brought greetings on behalf of her Aunt Marie de Grosbois,
Msgr. Ronan‘s niece. She also presented the school with Ronan‘s beloved pipe. We will soon have this pipe
on display for all to view and enjoy.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Massey Hall committee for the outstanding work they have
done so far to ensure the success of our upcoming Christmas Concerts. The school based ticket sales cam-
paign is going extremely well – keep up the good work! Mailings will soon be going out with posters and
sponsorship leaflets and we are hopeful that parents will continue to promote the concert in their communi-
ties.
Our ―Run-Out‖ concerts to prepare for Massey Hall will take place at St. Mary‘s Parish in Lindsay on Thurs-
day, November 28th and St. Leo the Great Parish in Brooklin on November 29th. St. Mary‘s has worked very
hard to arrange billeting for our boys. They are a small parish and finding accommodations for 220 boys has
been challenging; therefore, we will be accommodating our Grade 5‘s in a local hotel on the evening on No-
vember 28th. The details are being finalized and a package of information will be sent home very soon. I
would like to remind the parents of our grade 5 students that on Tuesday, November 5th from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
we will be having a meeting to answer all of your tour questions and concerns.

I t’s been an exciting month here
in the SMCS community. The
boy’s performance at our Founder’s
Day concert can only be described
as ―inspirational‖. This annual event
went beyond simply entertaining the
community with enjoyable music and it became a beau-
tiful expression of prayer. As Pope Emeritus Benedict
XVI said about music, ―THE IMPORTANCE of music in
biblical re-
ligion is
shown very
simply by
the fact that the verb ―to sing‖ (with related words such as ―song‖,
and so forth) is one of the most commonly used words in the Bible. It
occurs 309 times in the Old Testament and thirty-six in the New.
When man comes into contact with God, mere speech is not
enough. Areas of his existence are awakened that spontaneously
turn into song.‖ Music, therefore, an expression both in scripture and,
today, of the unfathomable dimension of God’s love.
We were also lucky this month to have had a very successful grade 9 retreat. The newest members of the high
school cohort were able to have fun together, eat together, and
pray together over the three day excursion to Muskoka Woods.
The Liturgy and commissioning service both drove home the im-
portance of brotherhood and fidelity to our houses, and the
school. A special thanks goes out to the five student leaders:
Gerard Mannella, Jacob Brozyna, Joshua Rossetti, Chris Pacitti,
and Jacob Rumsey for their guidance and the positive example
that they gave to the boys.

Spears Ultimate Frisbee
T he Spears Ultimate Frisbee Team experienced great success in the first
ever TDCAA Fall Ultimate League and Tournament. They played with
great skill and spirit as they ended the season with a 2-2 record heading into
the tournament. The tournament was filled with exciting close matches as the
Spears proceeded to the semi-finals where they lost to the eventual champions from Marshall McLuhan.
Highlights of the tournament include two come-from-behind wins including a formerly elusive victory
over St. Mary‘s. Another spectacular moment was Jonathan Chow‘s successful execution of the rare and
difficult manoeuvre: The Greatest!
Congratulations Spears!
Looking forward to the winter and
spring seasons for which practices and
tryouts will resume in December.

O ur Senior Volleyball Team has played 10 games in their regular sea-
son and has placed 5th in their division with 5 wins and 5 losses. The
team has now entered the Play-
offs and have passed through
to the 2nd round after knocking
out Dante Alighieri. The team
will now have to face Jean
Vanier in the 2nd round of the
playoffs.
They boys have shown great
determination and skill throughout the season. They have represented our school
very well and have shown that we are still a power house in the sport of Volleyball.
The players have held a high standard of volleyball throughout the season and continue to be a great presence on the court.
The team played two tournaments, one at Michael Power (Sep. 26) and the other at Msgr Percy Johnson (Oct. 4). We placed
second at the Msgr Percy Johnson tournament and brought a silver medal to the Choir school where it is displayed in our trophy
cabinet.
Once the playoffs are over, the team will have the opportunity to compete at the Provincial level, OFSAA. We wish the players
and coaches all the best in the playoffs as well as in the play down for OFSAA. Go Spartans!!!

FLAG FOOTBALL—TOURNAMENT
2013-2014 Senior Volleyball - Mr. Tarascio
T his month SMCS made its first appearance at the annual
TCDSB grade 9 flag football tournament. The boys put forth
a very strong showing considering their lack of exposure to the
sport. They ended the day with a 0-1-2 record in a division full of
talented and experienced teams. In fact, they would have advanced
to the semi-finals were it not for
a last-minute score off a Hail
Mary pass (which bounced off
of one receiver‘s hands and into
another‘s) by the Pope Panthers.
Through it all, the boys demonstrated talent, spirit, enthusiasm and
sportsmanship and we are very proud of their efforts.

O ctober was a great month for the Student Council and for
student-run initiatives! Our annual Thanksgiving Can Drive concluded on Octo-
ber 14th and I am pleased to report that as a school, we raised a total of 1024 cans! All
proceeds were their donated to St. Francis Table. We would like to thank all those who
participated for your generosity. We are privileged to be able to have a nice Thanksgiving,
surrounded by friends and family, and we were able to give those in our community who
are less fortunate, a hot and hearty meal. Great work everybody let’s raise even more
next year!
October is not only the month of our Founder’s Day Concert. Also, Halloween of course! this year the
council introduced a few new events that were a massive success. We had the new Halloween Skull Hunt,
where students from grades 5-12 were able to search around the school for hidden Halloween skulls in
return for House points. Students immediately took to the scavenger hunt and it was a pleasure to see
them having so much fun! The winning upper house was…Ronan House! And the winning Lower House
was…Mann House! Congratulations to both houses! We are extremely pleased that students are enjoying
the house system and we cannot wait to reveal the winner of the House Cup at the end of the year!
In the Upper House system, we celebrated Halloween with our annual Costume Contest and a new event,
Dress a Student Council Member. The Costume Contest is always something we look forward to! The
creativity, inventiveness and effort put forth into the costumes is always amazing! This year was no differ-
ent! With so many great costumes to choose from, it was difficult to choose only one to be the winner
but, in the end, James Bui, or should I say, Mr. Lewis, of Upper Ronan House, took home the title of Best
Costume. Our Dress a Council Member activity was met with pure excitement and enthusiasm and was a
rousing success! This event gave students a chance to bring in props to dress a Student Council member
after they were wrapped up like a mummy.
The students were able to come up with
some amazing costume designs and the final
results were fantastic! Congratulations goes
out to Upper Armstrong House for creating
the best costume! Thank you too all the stu-
dents for your enthusiasm and participation
in what were truly amazing Halloween fes-
tivities.
We look forward to the rest of the year and
we cannot wait to see what the future has in
store! Thank you to everyone who supports
Student Leadership and Student Voice, for
without you, none of this would be possible.

lights for the auditorium, musical instruments, and microwaves for the lunchroom.

We look forward to your continued support for all the events that fill out the CSAC calendar through-

our students their respective career journeys, and how the strong foundation
of the Choir School benefited them in their professional, social and spiritual
lives. The sense of brotherhood was palpable, making this an enriching ex-
perience for both parties.
Many students at the grade 10 level are uncertain about career opportunities.
Exposing them to a variety of choices that complement their values, interests,
and strengths—as well as allowing them to ask questions of alumni and to
interact with them in an informal manner, can help students on their path towards a successful and gratifying
career.
We are grateful to the following alumnus for their participation:
Mr. John Schrag graduating class of ‗82
Mr. Sean Haggerty graduating class of ‗88
