    2. CONFIGURING CATALOG EXPLORER

With Catalog Explorer, you can view and manipulate electronic catalogs of P&ID symbols and their associated properties.

2.1. Move and Resize the Catalog Explorer

You can move the Catalog Explorer anywhere in the SmartPlant P&ID window. You can also resize the Catalog Explorer to fit your individual needs.

    1. In the SmartPlant P&ID window, click the Catalog Explorer title bar.

    2. Drag the Catalog Explorer to the new location.

    3. To resize the Catalog Explorer, click the border of the Catalog Explorer window.

    4. When the pointer changes to a double arrow, drag the window border until the window is the size you want.

Note: You can also move and resize the Design window, the Stockpile, and the Properties window using this same procedure.

2.2. Change the Appearance of Symbol Icons

You can change the appearance, size, and level of detail for symbol icons in the Catalog list view, just as you can for icons in Windows Explorer.

    1. To change the view of the symbols in the Catalog list view, click the arrow beside the View menu

button in the Catalog window , and then click the applicable view.

(Large Icons, Small Icons, List or Details). Select each view one by one to review each view.

Notice that the appearance symbols in the bottom portion of the Catalog Explorer changes as you select different views from the View menu.

    2.3. Search for a symbol.

If you don't know where a symbol is categorized you can search for the symbol. Click the arrow beside the

Symbol Toolbar button (NOT the one on the Main toolbar, the one inside the Catalog Explorer itself).

Select Find to search for a symbol.

    The Find window will appear

    1. In the Named field enter your search string. You will need to use wildcards as it does not do a substring search. It does follow the standard conventions of: * - any number of characters.

    2. Specifying the Class is problematic and does not always give results as expected. We recommend you leave it at the default *.

    3. The Look-In field should point to your project, do not modify this field. It is usually not a good idea to choose a symbol from outside your project.

2.4. Add and Remove Navigation Buttons

Navigation buttons are shortcuts to specific catalog nodes or symbols that you use frequently. You can easily add and remove navigation buttons to the Catalog Explorer. You can click any navigation button to open a node quickly without browsing through the Catalog tree view.

    1. In the Catalog tree view, select a node.

    2. Click the arrow beside the Navigation menu button , and then click Add Button on the menu. The software creates a shortcut to the selected node between the Catalog tree and list views.

    3. If the new navigation button does not appear between the Catalog tree and list views, make sure that navigation buttons are set to display in the Catalog Explorer window. To verify this, click the

arrow beside the Navigation menu button and make sure that Display Buttons is checked.

    4. If navigation buttons already exist, the software inserts the shortcut button below any existing navigation buttons. To view symbols for the node in the Catalog list view, click the navigation button.

    5. To remove the navigation button, right-click the applicable navigation button.

    6. On the shortcut menu, click Remove Button.

    2.5. Create Your Own Catalog/Toolbar

You can create your own catalog that contains symbols that you use frequently. Because your catalog is stored on your computer, you can group symbols any way you want. You can copy the contents of entire nodes from the default catalog to your personal catalog. You can also create nodes that contain a variety of symbols organized to meet your needs.

There may be two sets of Toolbar categories. The one under My Catalog is stored on your personal hard drive and only accessible to you, while the Toolbar under Symbols is stored on the server and is accessible to everyone.

    1. In the Catalog tree view, Go to My Catalog > Toolbar right click and select New.The software creates a new node in your custom catalog named New Category.

    2. Name the new node, i.e. My New Items, and then press the Enterkey.

    3. To add a new node within the newly created node hierarchy, right-click the new node and follow the same procedure above.

    4. Go to the applicable symbols to copy to your custom catalog, click on the symbol(s) and drag them to the applicable node within the My Catalog tree view. In our case, add the gate valve and all nozzles to My New Items.

    5. Now we can have all of these symbols appear in a toolbar. Right click on the new Category we just created "My New Items" and select Refresh Symbol toolbar. You will now see a toolbar appear on the far left edge of your screen. Feel free to drag the toolbar to a more useful location.

    Notes

The symbols toolbar can be docked on any side of the main window.

You can define up to two levels of toolbars. For example, you can create a Vessels node under Toolbars, and under Vessels, you can create Vertical and Horizontal nodes. You cannot create another level under that. A divider appears in the toolbar between levels.

    3. PLACING PIPE, COMP. LABELS, HEAT TRACING, AND SEGMENT

    BREAKS

    3.1. Routing Pipe:

    1. In the Catalog window, click Piping > Routing. (Ensure Snap Grid is on.)

    2. Use a datapoint to define the starting point of the pipe and route to the specified location. When

you are routing pipe you should route the pipe in the flow direction of the process.

    3. Once you have routed the pipe you need to make sure that you place a flow arrow on the pipe to ensure that the proper flow direction is defined in the database. The flow direction is needed to get the TO/FROM in the Line List.

The default for routing pipe is either vertical or horizontal, if you need to route at an angle click on the

Diagonal Mode on the Routing box.

    3.2. Placing Piping Components:

Note: Piping components should be placed in a pipeline that is already drawn. Placing components in space and drawing lines between them is inefficient and can lead to inaccuracy.

To place a component in a pipeline: left click on the item required in Catalog Explorer. (Ensure Snap Grid is on.)

    4. PLACING INSTRUMENTS AND PREDEFINED LABELS

    4.1. Overview

You can place various types of instrumentation in your drawing, such as orifice plates, flow controllers, and pressure regulators. Instruments are devices used directly or indirectly to measure or control a variable, such as flow or temperature, in a plant process. Instruments can be items such as flow control elements, computing devices, or electrical switches. Two types of instruments exist: inline instruments and offline instruments. Signal lines are intelligent line strings that connect offline instruments, inline instruments, and piping. Inline Instruments Inline instruments are components that you can insert into a piping segment. Inline instruments include instrument valves, such as pressure regulator valves, flow controllers, flow indicators, and other instrument components, such as orifice plates. As you drag inline instruments over a pipe segment, the pipe segment appears selected. If you place an inline instrument when a pipe segment is not selected, the instrument is placed in free space. Offline Instruments Offline instruments are components that you do not insert into a piping segment. Typically, these instruments monitor and control inline instruments. Offline instruments include flow controllers, level gauges, and system functions such as digital control stations or computers.

You can close the Catalog Explorer and the Stockpile using this same procedure.

7.5. Viewing and Editing Item Properties

To view or edit an item property:

    1. Click on the applicable item on the P&ID (the properties will display in the Properties window)

    2. To edit a property, click in a cell next to the property and enter the value for the property selected. The way a value is entered is based on the type of value., i.e. text box, drop down list, etc.

    7.6. Working with Auto-Tag Generation

SmartPlant P&ID can automatically generate unique item tags for equipment, piping, and off-page connectors and instrument loops when this option is selected.

If you choose to manually input the Tag Seq No information in the field, the software will check for duplicate values when the Item Tag is generated. If an Item Tag already exists with that value, the software will prompt you to create a unique value.

    7.7. Piping

Fluid Code property for a line, the calculation program generates the Tag Sequence Number and formats the value together with the Fluid Code to generate the Item Tag.

    7.8. Select Sets

If you select multiple items then their common properties will be shown in the Properties Window At the top of the Properties Window the drop down bar will show "Select Set" when it is showing the properties for multiple items. If you click on the drop down bar you will then see all items that are part of the select set. The Properties Window will only show those property fields that are common to all items selected. I.E. if you have a nozzle and a pipe selected then Nominal Diameter will show, but Pipe Spec will not be shown. Likewise if both the pipe and nozzle have the same Nominal Diameter then that value will be shown in the Properties Window. If they are different then the field will be blank, but you can select the field and the top options in the drop down box will be all the values that make up your select setApplying Properties

Equipment When you define the Tag Prefix property for equipment in a P&ID, the calculation program automatically creates the next Tag Seq No and formats the values together to generate the Item Tag property for the item.

Piping When you set the Fluid Code property for a line, the calculation program generates the Tag Sequence Number and formats the value together with the Fluid Code to generate the Item Tag.

    1. In the Drawing window, click on the item to select it.

    2. To rotate the item, place the cursor over the rotate handle (green circle) until the rotate symbol appears. Click and drag the rotate handle in the direction that you want to rotate the item.

    3. To mirror the item, place the cursor over the mirror handle (green plus sign) until the mirror symbol appears. Click and drag the mirror handle in the direction that you want to mirror the item.

    4. Not all items in a P&ID can be mirrored or rotated. Whether or not this kind of modification is possible is defined when you create the symbol in Catalog Manager.

9.5. Replace an Item Using Replace Mode

    1. Click Tools > Replace Mode or click Replace Mode on the main toolbar.

    2. In Catalog Explorer, select the item that you want to place in the drawing.

    3. Move the selected catalog item over the drawing item that it is to replace.

    Tips

The Replace Mode command works for like objects only. The item that you want to replace in the drawing must be of the same class: equipment class, instrument class, and so forth. For instance, you can replace a vessel with another vessel, but you cannot replace a vessel with a pump.

The software also takes into consideration the connect points that are in use on the currently placed item. This stipulation means you cannot replace an angled item for a straight item when the straight item is already connected at both ends.

You cannot use the Replace Mode option for pipe runs or signal lines, you will need to use the Find and Replace command to replace pipe. You also cannot use this mode to replace items that are multiple representations.

The Replace Mode command also copies properties of the current item onto the new item.

    9.6. Find and Replace

You can use this command to replace multiple symbols with one command, also this command is used to replace primary pipe with secondary pipe or vice versa. 1. Pick the item within the drawing that you want to replace. 2. Go to Edit >Replace, then a dialog box will appear and you will go to the Replace with and click

the down arrow and this will allow you to browse to the catalog explorer and pick the item you want to use to replace with. The item you choose to replace with must be compatible.

    1. Off Drawing (OPC Type = Off Drawing Piping Connector or Off Drawing Instrument Connector)

This arrowed boxed graphic OPC can be used to show Drawing to Drawing or Unit to Unit.

The graphic is the same for the paired OPCs.

    2. Off Drawing without number (OPC Type = Off Drawing Piping Connector or Off Drawing Instrument Connector)

This arrowed boxed graphic OPC can be used to show Drawing to Drawing or Unit to Unit.

The graphic is the same for the paired OPCs.

The graphic Shows no Connector Drawing number (this is used for OPCS where the destination drawing is not known and the OPC is directed to the Unit-OPC drawing File.

    3. On Drawing (OPC Type = On Drawing Piping Connector or On Drawing Instrument Connector)

This arrowed boxed graphic OPC can be used to show Drawing to Drawing or Unit to Unit.

The graphic is the same for the paired OPCs.

    4. On Drawing without number (OPC Type = On Drawing Piping Connector or On Drawing Instrument Connector)

Note: When choosing an OPC make sure you use the correct one, if the OPC is coming in from another drawing use the On-Drawing OPC, if the OPC is going off the drawing use the Off-Drawing OPC. This is only for text orientation purposes only and both symbols can be replaced by the replace lock to get the desired text orientation.

    3. Utilities (OPC Type = Utility Connector)

This Diamond shaped OPC is used to show the connection to another utility drawing. 4. Utilities without number (OPC Type = Utility Connector)

This Diamond shaped OPC is used to show the connection to another utility drawing.

The graphic Shows no Connector Drawing number (this is used for OPCS where the destination drawing is not known and the OPC is directed to the Unit-OPC drawing File.

Tip: You can change OPCs by using the Replace lock

All OPCS shall be placed on a drawing and not in a plant stockpile or drawing stockpile.

    10.2. Placing/Moving/Deleting Connectors (OPC)

BEFORE PLACING A NEW OPC IN THE ACTIVE DRAWING:

Always check the drawing stockpile to verify if the OPC needed has not already been sent to the current drawing stockpile.

Go to Tools > Options > Placement tab, uncheck the option for Place partner OPC in stockpile and click OK. This will activate the OPC Partner placement dialog box whenever an OPC is placed.

To place a connector, at the end of a pipe go to Piping > Piping OPCs > Off-Drawing connector or take out the required OPC from drawing stockpile 1. Place the Off-Drawing connector in space. 2. Select a drawing in the dialog box to place the partner OPC.

E.g. When user sends an OPC to Drawing B, the following window will appear after placement of OPC

After user selects the desired drawing (Drawing B), notice the connector number and the drawing number appears automatically within the OPC.

    3. Select the pipe and join the OPC connect point.

It is easier to place the OPC in space first then connect the pipe to the OPCs. However, OPC must be inline with the pipe to ensure that the pipe will not have kinks. Before placing the OPC, mouse over the pipe connect point and drag to the right to display the red dot with dashes. This indicates that the OPC is centered on the pipe. Left-mouse click to place the OPC. Extend the pipe connect point to the OPC.

    4. In Drawing B, user should find the OPC that is sent to the drawing stockpile in the EDE to place on

the drawing. As soon as the OPC item is highlighted in the EDE, the graphical object can be placed in the drawing. Notice the same connector number as above and the drawing number originated from appears automatically within the OPC.

Note. Because OPCs work in pairs, the first drawing that is currently active will contain the new OPC. Its partner is then sent to the designated drawing and will remain in that drawing stockpile until it is placed. When placed the OPC text orientation will be wrong to rectify this simply replace OPC with opposing type(On-Drawing / Off Drawing) using replace lock. It is very important to have the EDE display the line number as part of the EDE view in

case there are multiple OPCs coming from the same drawing number.

    10.3. Moving OPCs:

For example, if OPC 1033 was originally sent to Drawing B and resides in the drawing stockpile but needs to be moved to Drawing C. Open Drawing B and locate the OPC in the EDE. Highlight the desired OPC and right-mouse click to select Move to Different Stockpile. The drawing window will appear to allow user to select the desired drawing.

If the OPC that is already placed in a drawing needs to be moved to a different drawing, delete the active OPC. This action sends the active OPC to the plant stockpile. Find the OPC in the plant stockpile in EDE. Right-mouse click and select Move to Different Stockpile to redirect the OPC from the plant stockpile to the new drawing number.

Note: Bug in software: In Workshare, when moving an OPC from one site to another site one can not move an OPC from a drawing stockpile directly to a drawing at another site. The OPC must first be sent from the drawing stockpile to the plant stockpile. Then redirect that OPC from the plant stockpile to the desired drawing at the other site. Otherwise, OPCs will be corrupted and loss of data can occur during recreate of drawings

    3. Deletion of OPC:

When an OPC is deleted graphically, it will be sent to the plant stockpile. Once one of the OPC is in the plant stockpile, one can go to the partner OPC drawing that and right-mouse click on that OPC and choose delete from model. Both OPCs will be deleted from the database.

One other option is to delete both OPCs from the drawings they both reside in. Then go to the plant stockpile in EDE and delete both OPCs from the plant stockpile.

Note: When using workshare, it is very important to make sure that there are no OPCs in the plant stockpile. OPCs in plant stockpile will cause the corruption of OPCs and cause loss of data associated to the OPCs on the P&IDs during recreate of the drawings. Please make sure that the plant stockpile does not have any OPCs prior to performing the synch shared items command. The SmartPlant Adminstrator for each licensor must make sure the plant stockpile is cleared of all OPCs every day.

    OPCs in Workshare Environment:

    1. No OPCs can reside in a Plant or drawing Stockpile. All OPCs must be sent to a Drawing and be placed on that drawing before publishing to host.

    2. Create a drawing in each unit called Unit-OPC e.g 1000-OPC 3. If destination drawing is unknown, use the Unit-OPC drawing to send OPCs that you would

normally send to the plant stockpile. 4. Before publishing to host all Unit-OPC Drawings must have no OPCS in the drawing

stockpile, all OPCS in that file must be placed in the drawing.

    11. EQUIPMENT MULTIPLE REPRESENTATION

Equipment Multiple Representation is used when you have one piece of equipment, which needs to be shown on multiple drawings. You can think of a multiple representation, as a child item associated with the parent item, which already exists in another drawing.

    1. Open the drawing that is a target for your multiple representation (child) of an item. 2. Open the EDE (Engineering Data Editor) and select equipment and toggle on other drawings

and locate your original equipment. You may want to use the Auto Filter in the EDE to filter the equipment before you pick on other drawings so that all the equipment in the project does not display.

    3. Select the equipment which will be placed as the multiple representation, right click on the

equipment and select place multiple representation and place equipment in the drawing. There will now be two graphical representations of a single database item. Any changes in data made to one of the representations will also affect the other.

If the graphics differ from drawing to drawing, or a single equipment item, the support group will need to clone the original equipment and modify the graphics. Once this is done, all of the steps listed above will be followed and then a final step of replacing the multiple representation with the newly cloned symbol will need to be done.

The end result will be twp graphically different representations, for a single equipment item. There will still only be one database item.

Do not try to place the same type of equipment and give it the same equipment number. This will create additional equipment item in the database, which would be incorrect. Smart Plant does not allow for two separate equipment items to carry the same tag number. Under no circumstance should we try to move the data around in the attributes, so that the Tag No label looks correct. There is a specific process for this, and it is absolutely essential that it be followed, Otherwise, the equipment items will not function properly, within the database, and rework will be required to correct the problems.
