Overview:India's economy is expanding rapidly and by 2030 it is

expected to have grown by five times, strengthened largely

by the country's urban centers. In India, around 350

million people are living in urban areas and it is expected to

grow up to 590 million by 2030. This accounts to nearly

40 percent of India's population as compared to the present

31 percent. India is on the verge of the second greatest

urban migration in world's history with migration of about

25-30 people every minute to major Indian cities from rural

areas, in search of better livelihood and better lifestyles.

Surging growth and employment opportunities in urban

cities will become a catalyst for the economic growth by

creating 70 percent of the new jobs while contributing in

excess of 70 percent to India's GDP by 2030.

The major challenge is to develop cities to accommodate its

inhabitants and provide them quality of life with the help of

technology. With the rapid growth of information and

communication technologies, there is a growing interest in

developing smart cities with a focus on the knowledge

economy, use of sensors and mobile & green technologies

to plan and manage cities. The emerging technologies have

potential application in efficiently managing the

environment and infrastructure, promoting economic

development and actively engaging the public, thus

contributing to building safe, healthy, sustainable and

resilient cities.

With globalization of cities, a number of cities are now

competing with one another to attract investments,

knowledge workers and promoting themselves as smart

and intelligent cities. Some of these cities are promoting

themselves for attractive lifestyle such as cultural and

natural amenities, knowledge infrastructure and

technologies.

With this background, APTDC proposes to organize

'SMART INDIA, a Conference on Smart Solutions for Smart

Cities' in Visakhapatnam, which is proposed to be

developed into a smart city by Govt. of India.

This two day conference aims to give a brief overview on

opportunities and challenges in Technology, Governance,

Knowledge & Innovation precincts, People & Skills, Natural

& Cultural Amenities in making Indian cities smarter.

World is witnessing a major change by rapid increase in

urbanization and also the technology. But the basic human

needs like food, water and shelter remain unchanged.

Challenge is in how the cities can provide their inhabitants

with basic necessities like fresh water, affordable food and

safe homes in a clean, non-polluted environment. As all the

systems are inter-linked, to provide these needs effectively,

there are other key areas which also need to be managed

such as Governance, Transport & Connectivity, Energy,

Environment, Healthcare, Information & Communication

Technologies, Economy, Knowledge Infrastructure &

Innovation culture, and Social & Cultural environment.

So far, Indian cities are using advanced technology within

departments in a limited level to solve problems. These

include traffic control, surveillance using CCTV cameras,

few online services, usage of sensors to monitor water

leaks, tracking garbage trucks through global positioning

systems to ensure they dump their waste at designated

landfills, energy management in smart buildings and

complexes.

India has recognized the importance of smart cities with

smart infrastructure which also solves the next generation

problems. Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,

in his speech on 8th June 2014 regarding smart cities

delivered his vision by saying, “Cities in the past were built

on riverbanks. They are now built along highways. But in

the future, they will be built based on availability of optical

fiber networks and next-generation infrastructure”. Indian

government has pledged to make 100 smart cities and also

to make a Digital India.

The Need:

assess the problems and challenges present in developing

the smart cities.

The conference will provide a platform for the industries,

officials and citizens to gain an insight into the opportunities

and challenges in making Smart Cities across India.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) works to create and

sustain an environment conducive to the development of India,

partnering industry, Government, and civil society, through advisory

and consultative processes.

CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-

development process. Founded in 1895, India's premier business

association has over 7200 members, from the private as well as

public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect

membership of over 100,000 enterprises from around 242 national

and regional sectoral industry bodies.

CII charts change by working closely with Government on policy

issues, interfacing with thought leaders, and enhancing efficiency,

competitiveness and business opportunities for industry through a

range of specialized services and strategic global linkages. It also

provides a platform for consensus-building and networking on key

issues.

Extending its agenda beyond business, CII assists industry to identify

and execute corporate citizenship programmes. Partnerships with

civil society organizations carry forward corporate initiatives for

integrated and inclusive development across diverse domains

including affirmative action, healthcare, education, livelihood,

diversity management, skill development, empowerment of women,

and water, to name a few.
