HOW DOES IT WORK

• PLC- The logic:

• If the pH is high: add acid- The higher the pH, the more acid is needed

• If the pH is low: add base (alkalai)- The lower the pH the more base is needed

• If the pH is OK neither pump should run- Expanded: pH of 5-9 is OK

• A buffer is required so both pumps are not running at the same time- If the pH is >9 add acid

> The higher the pH, the more acid is needed- If the pH is <5 add base

> The lower the pH the more base is needed- If the pH is >5 or <9 neither pump should run

CUSTOMER DECISIONS

What acid to use: Nitric, citric, acetic, sulfuric, hydrochloricWhat base to use: Magnesium hydroxide, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide

Materials of Construction: See above. Remember they have to use pipes and valves in the system so they should know what they need

Flow rates: These depend on the strengths of the reagents and the flow of the process or waste stream and the expected pH range of the waste stream

Pressures: Again this depends on the pressure of the system to be treated and any restrictions between the pump and the injection point; i.e., check valves, pipe or hose friction, filters and the like.

• Be careful about mechanical seals- Acids tend to stay liquid more than bases- Some alkaline materials really like to crystalize on the seal face

• NaOH, NaCl, for example- At least use a quench (GAM) with a quench pot

> Water is OK as a quenchBut it likes to evaporate

> Glycerin or a light oil is a better choice Watch out for bad combinations

Glycerine + Nitric acid + Sulfuric Acid = - If the quench liquid cannot be adequately maintained

> Use a double seal with a flush system
