St. Patrick Church

The Splendor of Mother’s Day

On an overseas flight from New York to London a woman sitting next to a man on the plane began to chat to him about her grandchildren. She even took out a plastic-foldout photo album of all nine children for him to see. After an hour the woman realized that she had dominated the entire conversation. “Oh, I’ve done all the talking, and I’m so sorry. I know you certainly have something to say. Please tell me…what do you think of my grandchildren?” Today we take time to honor the women who gave life to us and nurtured us with love, which gives us reason to celebrate the splendor of Mother’s Day. Mothers and grandmothers are those special people who shape our faith, and care for many in difficult situations. Today is a day to pamper moms and grandmothers aware that the best gift given to a mother is presence since these special people surrender so much of their personal time to foster love in our lives. There is a range of festivities that bring honor to moms on Mother’s Day that include time together at Sunday liturgy knowing that God blesses these women in a unique way through the children that are entrusted to them. One joy so visible in mothers is to see happiness in their children as moms maintain a unique way of assessing a child’s well-being as they share the joys and sorrows that enter into their children’s lives. Although mothers may smother a child with love, it is their way to show affection. I recall a mom whom I employed coming to realize that her motherhood was lulling her away from giving her ministry the time and energy that she believed people in the parish deserved. In reflecting on her motherhood the young woman stated, “As I’ve learned over the past years, the blessings of motherhood are multi-faceted. A mother’s capacity to love is immeasurable, as she loves her children intense-ly, purposefully, unconditionally. A mother beams with pride at her son’s first steps, crises with joy at her daughter’s first words, glows with enchantment at the sound of her child’s laughter. A mother hurts when her child hurts, battles ferociously to protect her baby, knows no bounds in caring for her own. Out of love, a mother accepts unfathomable challenges, endures sacrifices, and makes diffi-cult choices for the betterment of her children. A mother’s love knows no end and has no limitations.”

Moms maintain ways to quiet the agitations within life as they are always ready to listen to the burdens of loved ones expect-ing little in return which often leads to the delivery of a big hug necessary to sustain confidence during painful times; today it is im-portant to return a giant hug to mom in thanksgiving for the wisdom, respect, and kindness that she injects into a family. Most moms give their heart and soul to nurture children with confidence in ways that require patience in a tender, loving manner so that the spirit of God lives in the hearts of their sons and daughters. Single moms lay hold of additional responsibilities as these women tack on one hundred percent of duties to raise children and oversee a home without another to share in decisions, work, support or finances. To-day, it is not uncommon for grandmothers to take on responsibility to care for children while moms work at careers to support a fami-ly.

Mother’s Day may be a grim day for some women who are not able to have children, may have lost a child, may have lost

their own mother, or may have a strained relationship with their mother. In a book titled, Motherless Daughters, Hope Elderman, who lost her mother to breast cancer at age 17 states, “There is never a day when my mother is not important to me, she might not be living, but she’s still the woman who had more influence on me than anyone else.”

The church highlights Mother’s Day in the liturgy as it continues to celebrate the Easter Season. Today’s Gospel from John

concludes with the words, “Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these.” Whether living or deceased, see in your mom a woman who took it upon herself to accept the unfamiliar tasks of her vocation to make your life joyful and loving. May you always grasp the living presence of your mother as she carved a path for you to follow as her spirit journeys with you each day of life. Happy Mother’s Day!

In Christ’s Love, Fr. Bob

Join Our Parish Partnership Committee

Our Parish Partnership with Our Lady of Victories has been in

place for 20 years! Prompted by the Holy Spirit, Fr. Ron Aman-

dolare and Fr. Tom Coletta brought our parishes together and

through trials, change and transitions we have maintained our

bond.

We would like to reanimate our partnership and invite everyone

at St. Pats to be a part of this renewed effort. Join the Partner-

ship Committee! We hope to gather bi-monthly and schedule

several events each year. Be a part of discovering ways to enrich

our partnership community. Help create opportunities to gather

for fun, faith-sharing, outreach and more. Contact Peggy Gentile

at 973-635-0625 ext. 25 or [email protected] for more infor-

mation.

Family Promise-Keys to Housing Project

Have you ever seen a homeless person in Morristown and

wished you could help? Here is your chance!!

St. Patrick Church recently hosted 14 guests from Family Prom-

ise. This was part of their Emergency Shelter Program. Family

Promise also has a Community Support Program, which helps

these families and other at risk families when they move into

their own homes, as well as a Drop-in Center in Morristown that

supports those living on the streets. Recently, Family Promise

was awarded new housing vouchers that will pay the rent of up

to 20 families...forever! These vouchers must be used by Sep-

tember or they will be forfeited.

Securing and using these vouchers is expensive. An enormous

amount of paperwork is necessary as well as moving costs,

apartment repairs, purchase of furniture, household items, in-

spection/compliance issues and case management to name a

few. The average administrative cost per voucher is $3,000.

Family Promise is attempting to raise $60,000 in order to use all

20 vouchers.

CAN YOU HELP? St. Patrick hopes to assist 1-2 families and

needs your help! Consider making a donation! Any amount will

help and will most certainly change someone’s life FOREVER!

Donations can be sent to Family Promise, PO Box 1494, Morris-

town, NJ 07962 with “Keys to Housing” in the note section.

MUSIC MINISTRY

Children’s Choirs Sing at Our Lady of Victories

Choristers in the Morning Song Choir and St. Patrick Girls Choir will travel to Paterson on May 20 to sing for our part-ner parish, Our Lady of Victories, at the 5 pm mass. Fr. Chris, Deacon Mark, and Maggie Hanson will go on the trip with the choirs. All will share a meal together after the mass. If you would like to go with the group, please contact Maggie Hanson. If you’d like to attend the mass and drive on your own, the address is 169 Broadway in the historic downtown section of Paterson--the corner of Broadway and Memorial Drive.

First Communion Musicians

Thank you to the many children who sang for the four First Com-munion masses this weekend and last weekend! Forty-seven choir members and instrumentalists from the Morning Song Choir, Boys Choir, and Girls Choir sang for these beautiful masses. Many of the children sang for two of the four masses, and some sang for all four. It was a joyous time, and very hard work. Thank you, choir members and parents, for your dedica-tion to music ministry!

The Knights of Columbus will be serving chili at Eva’s

Kitchen on Sunday, May 21st. If you would like to help

make chili, there are pans and recipes in the back of the

church. The frozen chili can be dropped off in the freez-

ers located in the priests’ garage before 10 am on Sun., May 21.

If you would like to help the Knights serve the chili in Paterson,

please be at the St. Pat’s parking lot by 9:45 am on May 21.

Have you experienced the joy of our neophytes-

those people who are “baby Catholics,” having been wel-

comed to the faith at the Easter Vigil? How has the Word of

God transformed you? Can you remember a time when your

heart burned within you because of a new biblical insight or

a new application to your life or circumstances? What was

that like? Perhaps you are one who has come to church for years

with your spouse, though you, yourself are not a Catholic. What is

bringing you through the doors? If you are interested in becoming

one with us at the table of the Lord (in full Communion), contact

From the Desk of Dr. Deb,

What would you do if you were invited to someone’s home for

dinner, and when you arrived, nobody welcomed you or greeted

you as you entered? We, the parish family of St. Patrick, wel-

come people to our parish home for five Masses a weekend.

Ideally, there should be a minimum of six people per mass in

order to cover each door to greet people as they enter, and then

(because our people do double duty as greeters and ushers),

take up the collection. We need your help. The hospitality minis-

try is a ministry of evangelization and welcoming current parish-

ioners and visitors to mass and special liturgical events.

It is important that each person be greeted as the body of Christ

gathers together. The welcome of a greeter sets a tone of love. It

reminds people that they are entering a special time of worship,

where they will experience God, and God’s love. Maybe some-

one has had a difficult week. A warm greeting can remind people

that they are entering a place that will treat them differently than

the way the world treated them. A warm greeting also reaffirms to

each person that they belong. It’s a way of saying, “You belong

here, and we are glad that you do.” After all, everyone is im-

portant to the body of Christ. Won’t you consider joining this min-

istry? Anyone over the age of 12 can help be a greeter, and

those over 16 can also be an usher. If you are interested in join-

ing this ministry, please see an usher, one of the priests, or Deb

at any of the Masses. Don’t keep the faith—share it!!
