http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson_images/lesson290/Template.pdf
Be prepared to discuss your report during a class activity.
8. In groups preselected by the facilitator (group members will be posted in Blackboard or via
email), select an industry and a product or service.
a. In collaboration with your other group members, prepare a written report of an
industry and a market analysis of the selected product or service. The market analysis
must include information about the competition.
b. You must follow the latest APA guidelines for this written work.
c. This assignment must be sent via Blackboard before the beginning of this workshop.

workshop.
b. Students will provide feedback to one another to ensure their completion of the 20-
word summary.
c. They will then reach a consensus on the most complete and accurate summary and
share it with the class.
d. A question and answer session will follow each group presentation.
e. In addition, the facilitator will clarify any questions students may still have.
ENTR 401 ENTREPRENEURIAL OPPORTUNITIES 22
Revised January 2017
3. The facilitator will divide the class in small groups. Using the flow chart prepared before the
workshop, each group will discuss the steps of a feasibility analysis. The facilitator will clarify
any questions on this topic.
4. The facilitator will preselect four brief readings, one text with four content paragraphs, or four
segments from the recommended textbook or from another reliable, high academic resource,
related to the industry analysis, market analysis and the feasibility analysis for a business
opportunity.
a. The facilitator then will use a different grouping technique to divide the class into small
groups of four and assign a unique role to each group member:
i. summarizer,
ii. questioner,
iii. clarifier and
iv. predictor.
b. Students will read the first paragraph of the assigned text selection and apply note-
taking strategies, such as selective underlining or sticky-notes, to help them better
prepare for their role in the discussion.
c. When indicated by the facilitator, the summarizer will highlight the key ideas up to
this point in the reading.
d. The questioner will then pose questions about the selection, such as unclear parts,
puzzling information, and connections to previously learned concepts.
e. The clarifier will address confusing aspects and attempt to answer the questions that
were just posed.
f. The predictor will make predictions about what the author will follow up with next.
g. The roles in the group will then switch to the person on the right, and the next
selection is read.
h. Students will repeat the process using their new roles.
i. These same steps will continue until the entire selection is read.
j. Throughout the process, the facilitator's role will be to guide, ensure students offer
correct information, and nurture the students' ability to apply successfully the four
strategies within the small group. The teacher's role will decrease as students develop
these skills.
ENTR 401 ENTREPRENEURIAL OPPORTUNITIES 23
Revised January 2017
9. Students will orally discuss the following scenarios:
a. Some neighbors are planning to open a Hispanic restaurant near a local community
college. Since they have a limited budget, it is essential that they have a very good
idea of what their total start-up costs will be, as well as their projections for their first
year’s sales. What strategies or techniques do you recommend they use to estimate the
total start-up costs of opening the restaurant and of their first-year sales? Explain the
rationale for your responses.
b. Pedro Alvarez will soon be opening a fitness club in Dallas, Texas. Having identified
his competitors, he wants to display the information he has collected in a way that will
help him determine how he’ll stack up against his competitors and pinpoint his sources
of competitive advantage. Describe to Pedro a technique or strategy he could use to
help achieve his objectives. Explain the rationale for your responses.
Each group will share their recommendations or techniques with rest of the class,
followed by feedback and question/answer sessions.
10. Students will have a determined amount of time to present the PowerPoint presentation
prepared prior to the class, based on the written report of the selected industry and its product
or service and a competitor analysis of these products or services. A question and answer
session, as well as a feedback session, will follow each group presentation. The facilitator will
clarify any doubts.
11. The students will continue filling out the last three columns of the KWHLAQ Chart found in
Appendix K on the topic determined by the facilitator in Workshop One. Remember that this
assignment will be discussed in the last workshop.
12. The facilitator will discuss and clarify doubts regarding the assignments due prior to the next
workshop.

3. Credit score
4. Government grant
5. IPO
D. Activities before the Workshop
1. Visit the Small Business Administration website https://www.sba.gov/ and research
information on financing for a new business venture. Make sure you also research and include
the requirements of your state. Take extensive notes that will be helpful for completing
assignments and activities in class.
2. Write an analytical essay, number of pages determined by the facilitator, on the challenges of

partial test that will be offered during the class.
D. Activities to be completed during the Workshop
1. The facilitator will lead the class in a review of the topics covered in the previous workshop
to ensure students’ comprehension.
2. Students will use the outlines of their chapters for all the activities below.
3. The facilitator will select an article or short segment from the recommended textbook related to
the topics discussed on this workshop. Then, the facilitator will start an activity call “Partner
Reading”. This activity allows students to take turns reading and provide each other with
feedback to monitor comprehension. The facilitator will create pairs within the classroom by
identifying which student require help on specific skills and who the most appropriate students
are to help others learn those skills. The facilitator will first model the procedure to ensure that
students understand how to use the strategy. Have each member of the teacher-assigned pair
take turns being "Coach" and "Player." Students will switch roles after each paragraph. The
facilitator must float around each pair to monitor and support students as they work together.
Use a brief reading so the activity should last about 10 minutes. Ask the stronger reader to begin
this activity as the “Player” so he/she can follow along and correct any mistakes when
necessary.
4. The facilitator will ask a specific higher-learning question about the text read on the prior
activity. The facilitator must provide each student time (about 2-3 minutes) “think” about what
they learned on the reading. After they finish “thinking”, the facilitator will pair students.
Students share their thinking with their partner, discuss ideas, and ask questions of their partner
ENTR 401 ENTREPRENEURIAL OPPORTUNITIES 33

about their thoughts on the topic (2-5 minutes). Once partners have had ample time to share
their thoughts and have a discussion, teachers expand the "share" into a whole-class
discussion. After the class “share,” the facilitator may choose to have pairs reconvene to talk
about how their thinking perhaps changed because of the “share” element.
5. The class will be organized as a discussion panel to share their opinions from both the
VoiceThread assignments. The facilitator will be the moderator of the panel, going thru all the
questions from the assignments. The students that belong to the audience must elaborate
comments that support or defy the panelists.
6. Students will meet in small groups to discuss the graphic organizers done before the workshop
(#3). The facilitator will assign each group at least 2 sources of financing a new business. Each
group will prepare a chart and discuss results with the facilitator and the class.
7. The class will be divided into five groups and assign one of the Five C’s of Credit to each
group. After discussion, each group must prepare a brief oral presentation.
8. Students will discuss to present and discuss some examples of IPOs (Assignment #7). Each
student will perform a brief oral presentation on how to launch an IPO and why it is important
for a successful new business.
9. The facilitator will administer the first partial test during the time deemed most appropriate.
10. The facilitator will discuss and clarify doubts regarding the assignments due prior to the next
