Our year 12 Business Level 2 class went on a trip to JohnLewis with Miss Miller, Head of Business. We decided to gothere to find out different sales techniques and general

knowledge about the company. After a rather amusing journey, wefinally arrived at John Lewis where we approached members ofstaff to enquire about John Lewis. A man we spoke to provided uswith information about how they work in John Lewis and explainedthe rules that they had to stick to. A lot of the information was newto us and really helped us to perform well with our coursework inorder to achieve our target grades. We were able to write up ourcoursework confidently knowing that we had accurate information

from staff and were not relying on information from the Internet.Speaking to staff members personally helped us to betterunderstand how staff at John Lewis work, and also their principlesand values. We all had something to take away with us from thisexperience, whether it was new information on sales techniques orhow staff dealt with customers. We will be able to use thisknowledge for our future aspirations when we may choose to workin a department store like John Lewis. Thank you Miss Miller forgoing out of your way to take us on an enjoyable trip, and also, forthe Costa treat :)

Sixth Form EnrichmentActivitiesBy Ms Johns – HoY12

In the Sixth Form we aim to provide all students with theopportunity to engage in the wider community and takepart in various enrichment activities. This year we held a

successful ‘Fresher’s Fair’ enabling students to sign up tothese different activities. It was at this fair that many of ourstudents volunteered to serve at The Whitechapel Mission,as well as joining the charity week committee. I amextremely proud of the work that these students havecompleted. I think it says a lot about the students that wehave here and their commitment to helping those lessfortunate than themselves. I look forward to joining themlater this year, and hope to continue and develop thisexcellent work in the future.

The Whitechapel MissionBreakfast ChallengeBy Keren, Year 12

Ican happily say, waking up so early in the morning wasworth it. I went to visit The Whitechapel Mission and itwas an unreal experience. We had to be there for

5:45am, and upon arrival I was introduced to the staffworking there which consisted of a small team who werefull of so much energy and enthusiasm‐really nice people. We were briefed about what the morning would be like. Inthe early hours of the morning at 6am I was allocated tomake teas, coffees, etc for the homeless men and womenwho were arriving. It astonished me that as soon as weopened the doors, so many people came in which clearlyshows how much of a support The Whitechapel Missionmust be to them. The morning never really stopped asmore and more people kept coming through the doors asthe hours went by.

By the time it reached 7:45am we were briefed again aboutthe breakfast service that was about to take place at 8am.This breakfast is so important to the homeless; some ofwhom haven't eaten in the last day. Serving breakfast wasreally nice; you got to speak to people whilst giving themwhat they would like to eat. Just watching them and seeinghow happy they felt brought joy to my heart.

It was really inspiring to see how grateful they were for myassistance on the day. To know that I had taken a couple ofhours out of the school day to go and help them touchedthem, as well as myself. I would strongly advise morepeople to volunteer at The Whitechapel Mission. It really isa fantastic experience that makes you as an individual moregrateful for what you have.

On the 8th December 2016, the new Career Readystudents took a trip to Central London with otherCareer Ready students across the United Kingdom to

take part in The Capital Experience. Now you’re probablywondering what The Capital Experience is.

The Capital Experience is the launch party for the newCareer Ready students, and this year it was held in theDominion Theatre in central London. It lasted for roughly 3hours and was jam packed with motivational speeches andsuccess stories from alumni students. This year we had theprivilege to have Action Jackson to host the event, and hegave us fantastic advice that we could use during theduration of the course. Alim Kamra (story teller) was also aspeaker and told us a story about overcoming hurdles usingimagery to paint the picture.

After the launch party, every school was assigned to abusiness in central London. Students had the opportunity to

network and find out about the different jobs they offer. Wewere surprised when we were given Holborn Police station, but when we were talking about the different roles neededto make up the police force it had some studentsquestioning if this would be a new career path. We wereable to take a lot from the session, for example TheMetropolitan Police are trying to recruit Young People tojoin the force (you should really consider it) and try to buildback the relationship between young people andcommunities.

It was such an amazing day and a great start to beingCareer Ready.

On 25th November 2016, a group of Year 7 and 8students went to the East Wintergarden inCanary Wharf to attend the finale of the Tower

Hamlets Book Award 2016.

We arrived after a morning of final rehearsals for ourthree minute presentation on one of the shortlistedbooks, ‘Joe All Alone’ by Joanne Nadin. The stage wewere going to perform on was a lot smaller thanexpected, and we had to deliberate on how to changethe movement of our characters to fit the spaceavailable. There were many schools attending the event, but only eight schools were selected to give apresentation, and we were one of them.

The finale of the 10th Anniversary of the Tower HamletsBook Award began, and as a group we had devised ourown way of predicting the winner of the Award and thepresentation. The book that had the most presentationswould win and because we were older students in theover 11 category, and the other presentations were fromstudents from primary schools, we did not stand muchof a chance of winning. Author Joanne Nadin whosebook we based our presentation on was one of thejudges.

‘Joe All Alone’ is about a young boy who is left all alonein his home when his Mum and her boyfriend go toSpain on a mysterious job‐seeking mission, and whathappens to him when this parents do not return.Between us we had written the presentation andcollaborated on how it should be staged. Ms Charman,School Librarian got us to rehearse it for weeks toperfection, and all of us had lots of fun doing thepresentation, even though we had imagined it a lotdifferent when we had first drafted it.

The winner of the Award was ‘My Brother is aSuperhero’, by David Solomons (an author who was oneof the judges), probably because of its superhero theme.Incidentally, three of the schools did a presentation on it,so our method of prediction was correct. I think it is agood book, but I preferred three of the other books thatwere shortlisted.

Twenty sixth form students attended a Pathways to Apprenticeship Fair hosted in Tower Hamlets by the Education BusinessPartnership. It was a fantastic event which gave students opportunities to meet with employers who are offeringApprenticeships, combining paid work with getting a degree or foundation degree. Students were able to network and

compare the apprenticeship route with going to University. Organisations represented at the event included TFL, Bank ofEngland, Milkround, IBM and BDO to name a few.

Pathways toApprenticeship Fair

Ifound our most recent trip to the Bank of Englandextremely informative. Information was made readilyavailable to us via the leaflets that we were given. Signs

around the museum were also helpful and enabled us toacquire a great deal of knowledge about the history of theBank of England, which we all appreciated.

Students had a number of tasks that they had to completewhilst at the museum, and required them to access theinformation provided to them to complete their worksheets.Additionally, it gave the students an opportunity to challengethemselves and demonstrate the ability to workindependently, as well as effectively in teams to accessinformation themselves.

Observing from a teachers perspective, I found it veryinteresting to see how enthusiastic the students were inaccomplishing the tasks given. Additionally, I could see the

students were well behaved and also attentive whencompleting their worksheet. I was pleased about this becausethey demonstrated high level of maturity and respect for themuseum and the staff working there. I strongly believe that ifstudents were not left to their own devices and with a tourguide present, they may not have enjoyed the experience asmuch.

Despite the museum not being so large the students wereable to access a vast amount of information during a shortperiod of time. They seemed to have enjoyed their trip. My teaching experience has been the most informativeexperience. It has been a pleasure to work along‐side theteachers in the business department and around the school. The behaviour during the school trip was outstanding and itwas no surprise especially since SJCR were awardedoutstanding by Ofsted in 2015.
