SINGER’S WARSAW 10 th FESTIVAL OF JEWISH CULTURE 24 th of August – 1 st of September 2013 The organizer reserves the right to make changes to the event program Friday, 23 th of AUGUST 2013 12.00 Celebrating his 90th birthday and 65 years of artistic career, Szymon Szurmiej presents: “BETWEEN DAY AND NIGHT. THE DYBBUK” – a show based on “The Dybbuk” and “Day and Night” by Szymon An-ski Adapted and directed by: Szymon Szurmiej, Assistant director: Artur Hofman, Stage designed by: Marta Grudzińska, Choreography by: Dorota Furman, Music arranged by: Teresa Wrońska Directed by Szymon Szurmiej, the show is an accurate adaptation of one of the best- knownworks in Yiddish. The Dybbuk is a milestone in the history of the Yiddish literature. For the Jewish theatre it is as important as “Dziady” for the Polish theatre. This is a story about love stronger than death – it refuses to leave with the loving person and lasts forever… - says a short description of “The Dybbuk” based on the work by An-ski. This classical story in Yiddish tells about the power of love on the verge of two worlds, it is full of religious beliefs, symbolic, wrapped with some kind of mystery. Before the show begun, Szymon Szurmiej – director of the Jewish Theatre, director and actor playing one of the parts said a few words about the play. Then, the show started. On the dimmed stage, orthodox Jews studied the Talmud. One of them, young and pious man, died in the chapel and his spirit possessed a girl and a future bride. Why? – this question is a leitmotiv of the show. Fate cannot be deceived. First rate acting allows the performers to render the atmosphere of the play that takes place on the verge of two worlds. Congratulations to Szymon Szurmiej, who, despite the passing years, gives a great performance on stage and enchants the audience as Cadyk from Miropol. 15.00 The forgotten stories of tzaddiks and rabbis – NN TheaterAdapted and directed by: Tomasz PietrasiewiczStarring: Witold Dąbrowski“Storytelling and listening are essential elements of Hassidic religiousness. Many tzaddiks compared storytelling to Torah studying. The time when stories were told was deemed sacred, allowing everyone to relive the events in those tales” (from the Book: Lublin. Imaginarium) Maybe these stories can help the characters and events of the Holy City of Lublin come back to life, if just for a moment?Small Stage of the Jewish Theater, 1st floor, Pl. 17.00 Art Exhibition – Krystyna Piotrowska: Portrety w technice własnej, Ryszard Horowitz: All that Jazz! – Jazz portraits Krystyna Piotrowska: “Portraits make up my main area of works, in drawings, graphics, videos and installations. I show a face reflected in the mirror, multiplied faces, doubled faces, broken faces, all immortalized on a piece of negative, overlapping with parts of other faces. I show my own face, the faces of people close to me and those of strangers cut out of newspapers and albums, as well as photographs from my private collection.”Ryszard Horowitz is one of the most renown Polish artists. Being only a young child, he survived the Auschwitz concentration camp (being one of the youngest survivors). In the 1950s, still a student of the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts, Ryszard Horowitz became fascinated with American photography. In the creative and energetic atmosphere of the 1956 thaw, he documented the incipient jazz environment. Soon after, he left for the US, where he initially worked in commercials. Working on his own projects, he started playing with form and modern technologies. He developed his own experimental and recognizable style. His photographs depict unreal scenes from dreams. They showcase a play between the and pictures. 18.00 Exhibition opening – Imaginary and real portraits from the ››Żyd Niemalowany‹‹ (The unpainted Jew) collectionCurator: Alicja B. Schottlas19th century Polish magazines featured many Jewish faces: real ones – when the author was acquainted with the person portrayed, imaginary – when they did not have such an opportunity. Why were the face of these exact Jews portrayed and not any others? Well, in order to garner media interest, it is always good to do something more, or better. So, even if at the time you were: an actor, businessman, philanthropist, bookstore owner, doctor, painter, musician, writer, rabbi, chess player, scientist, inventor, it was still worth to be prominent. Oh, and it was also worth to be an avid supporter of assimilation, emancipation and the reform of Judaism (a change of religion was welcomed but not necessary); long for Polish-Jewish rapprochement; not remain indifferent about national uprisings and prove all this through words and actions. With all this in mind, an opportunity might arise, just as it did for that bearded man, to appear in a magazine and in time even an exhibition. The exhibition will open during the FestivalThe exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Foundation Żyd Niemalowany Muzeum Wieczny TułaczFoyer of the Jewish Theater, Pl. Grzybowski 12/16

19.00 KAFKA DANCES – based on a play by Timothy Daly and performed by the Jewish Theater, translated by Lech MackiewiczDirected by: Lech Mackiewicz, Szymon Szurmiej, stage designed by: Jan Polivka, costumes designed by: Marta Grudzińska, music by: Piotr Moss, choreography by: Iliana Alvarado, assistant to the director: Ewa Dąbrowska.Starring: Piotr Sierecki (Franz Kafka), Marek Węglarski (Father/Herman), Joanna Przybyłowska (Mother/Julia), Katarzyna Post (Otla/Sister), Małgorzata Trybalska (Felice/Bride).Kafka Dances was inspired by Franz Kafka’s letters to Felice Bauer, written during their short, but turbulent relationship. Timothy Daly was interested in how art struggles with life and vice versa. He wrote a piece about an artist who learns how to live and faces a choice: his art or the hardships of everyday life, and he tries to make this choice. In the case of Franz Kafka there was just one answer …“Timothy Daly tells a story of the artist’s struggles with reality in a light-hearted manner filled with humor. At first glance, it’s impossible to see any gray clouds looming over the hero’s life (very personal life). The drama is clad in a comedic costume, yet the laughter is served only as an appetizer, just to touch the audience a little more later on. Painfully, so to say. Nobody promised that it would be easy, right?” (Lech Mackiewicz)Supporting event, duration 2 hours 20 minutes with one intermission. The Large Stage of the Jewish Theater, Pl. Grzybowski 12/16Tickets are available at the ticket office of the Jewish Theater from the 1 st of August 2013, tel. 22 850 56 56 and at www.eventim.pl

The text was written during the poet's emigration spent in New York, a year after the Uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto, when those who survived started to realize the unbelievable amount of tragedy that the Jews suffered. The text quickly circulated throughout Jewish and Polish communities around the world, arousing fierce emotions and deep shock, because it expressed the pain of the Jews so powerfully. In Poland, it was forbidden for many years, and reprinted only as a copy until 1993 when it was officially published by the Shalom Foundation. The work is a manifesto of the author who publicly identified with his Jewish brothers although before the war he emphasized his ties with Polish culture. The poet expressed his deep, personal pain, showing not only the roots of racism, antisemitism and genocide but also the perspective of the future, when the earth will be inhabited by just one kind of people – the noble people.Włodzimierz Press is a theater, television and film actor, and voiceover artist. I ask more and more impatiently: Have you lived? How many breads have you baked for the people? How many trees have you planted? How many bricks have you laid before you leave? How many buttons have you stitched? How many, for better or worse, dirty linen have you washed? How much cordiality have you offered and to whom? And I don’t just ask. It happens that I reprimand: do not destroy letters! They don’t take much space. Faded photographs, crushed flowers, a pink ribbon, a dried leaf; it is a reflection, memento, recollection. 11.00-17.30 Symposium: Jewish motives in Julian Tuwim's works Mentoring: prof. Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska (UMSC) “I am Polish because I say so” – wrote Julian Tuwim in his poetic manifesto of April 1944. We, the Polish Jews, in which he both emphasized his Jewish origins and “the name of the Polish Jew”. Many did not appreciate the declaration, just as before - during the interwar period - when he was exposed to both the attacks of Polish nationalists and critique of the Polish, Jewish and Yiddish press. And despite that, Awrum Suckewer asked in his 1946 poem Cu Pojln [To Poland], his farewell to Poland: “Have you ever had any other Julian ben Tuwim?” Those issues are relatively unknown, similarly to the translations of Tuwim's poems into Yiddish or his place among the Polish-Israeli writers. This symposium aims at bringing attention, at least partially, to the forgotten or unexplored Jewish context in the works of this great poet.At the end of the symposium, the participants will have the chance to listen to select poems in two languages: Polish and Yiddish, including Locomotive and Szejndl-Alejndl. 11.00 Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska (UMCS – Maria Curie-Skłodowska University): “Had he wrote in Jewish... 20.00 Żyd Wieczny Tułacz / The Wandering Jew – performance by Videoteatr “Poza” based on Aleksander Wat’s short story. Adaptation, images, directed by: Piotr Lachmann, starring: Jolanta Lothe, Mateusz Banasiuk (on photographs), Daniel Pigoński (keyboards)The story is a master combination of the futuristic poet’s workshop and his later visionary poetics. The world created in 1926 resembles our own though in a distorted mirror of the absurd logic of the author’s imagination. In his story, the orthodox Jews save degrading Christianity but then the anti-Semites start to fiercely oppose the church dominated by the Jewish saviors. Antisemitism is portrayed as an incurable mental illness. The poet painfully argues that irrationality is still dominant in the world, though it seems to be rational on the surface.Lothe Lachmann Videoteatr “Poza” is the only theatre in Poland that combines live acting with monitors, projectors and cameras on stage. It is based on the symbiosis of the actor and his electronic clone, the time of the performance and the time “beyond it”, image, music, text. Melodiously sounding aliases hide the identity of Polish musicians who come from improvised, alternative and jazz music background. Fascinated by traditional wedding and funeral fanfares, they decided to follow Balkan brass orchestra’s formula, which was the starting point in creating their own take on music, bringing these experience to Poland and add Slavic flavor to them, with elements of modern jazz and klezmer music. They search for inspiration mainly in the traditional melodies of the Balkans, Turkey, Middle East and India but also in Sephardic music and Polish folk music. Surely, Tsigunz Fanfara Avantura is a one-of-a-kind band on the Polish music scene; it is a 7-person brass orchestra whose experimental sound is a bridge between a roaring brass section and a strong, modern rhythmic section. 17.00 Zibn grozn fun di grozn [Seven blades of grass] – evening with Avrom Suckewer’s poetryFragments of poetic prose and poems – some translated especially for the evening – presented by Anna Rozenfeld and Adrianna Janota intertwine and permeate with music played on clarinet by Christian Dawid. Verbal and musical interpretation of Awrom Suckewer’s poems and prose. An attempt to touch upon the truth embedded in the works of the most distinguished poet of the Yiddish language, a virtuoso of words who revolutionized and enriched ancestors’ language and whose poetry has a great effect of musicality – “just as Jan Sebastian Bach’s polyphony translated into Yiddish”. During this unique evening, we will enter the multilayer, fine fabric of meanings: among the straws of words, sounds and images, we follow the poet asking again the questions that he once posted which still vibrate in our ears and hearts. 17.00 THE DYBBUK. BETWEEN TWO WORLDS – a production by the Habima National Theatre from IsraelAdapted and directed by: Shmuel ShohatStarring: Ayelet Shadmon, Yaron Sancho Goshen, Nimrod Eisenberg. A remarkable, contemporary adaptation of one of the best known Jewish plays (The Dybuk. Between Two Worlds by Szymon An-ski), inspired by Chagall's pictures, the German expressionism, Tim Burton's movies and Jim Henson's The Muppet Show. The use of different styles enables the artists to create tension between the actor and the puppet, which extends the scope of the tale about Leah and Hannan – the star-crossed lovers, whose love can be fulfilled only after the border between life and death is crossed. The show may be interpreted as an allegory of the world, in which the material sphere is subjected to the spiritual one. The director confronts an individual and a society, free thinking and tradition, and under the guise of humorous puppet show, he calls for reflexions.Play adaptation presented to the audience of the Singer Festival has been created for the Habima National Theater as part of the Israel Festival in Jerusalem in 2008. Since that time, the show has been staged in San Francisco, Moscow, Berlin and prestigious UNIMA World Puppet Festival in China and in Washington. The Large Stage of the Jewish Theatre, Pl. 19.00 THE FINALE CONCERT: JOSHUA NELSON AND THE BAND, RAFAEL ROGIŃSKI WITH CUKUNFT BIG BAND AND KAYAHCukunft band will bring to the Festival a special program featuring the music of Jewish weddings. Based on archives, the members will perform the so-called wedding selection with all its nuances. We will hear typical parasacral music that establishes the bride and groom as a couple for all time. The music will be used to emphasize the ecstasy or lead into trans. Cukunft is going to perform together with guests and as usual, it will be so wonderful that you will think that the story is taking place today. CUKUNFT (Yiddish: Future) was founded by the guitar player Raphael Rogiński. The idea behind the band was to continue the tradition of Eastern European Jewish music in all shapes and sizes. By performing pre-war music, they not only reproduce it but also interpret it. Composing their own pieces, they draw on the whole spectrum of Jewish music that is still alive today. Their repertoire is made up spontaneity, supported by music and sociological research. The band often invites collaborators (including Kuba Kossak – fagot, Adam Różański – percussion, Piotr Kaliński – percussion instruments, Tomasz Duda – baritone saxophone, Konstanty Usenko - cello). In its first composition, the band prepared works of Mordechaj Gebirtig (1877-1942), Jewish composer and poet, who lived and worked between the wars in Kraków. This selection was recorded as maxi singiel “Lider fun Mordechaj Gebirtig” in 2004. The next composition consists of the works of Polish composers and Jewish poets (Icyk Manger, Mosche Shneur, David Beigelman and others) and Raphael Rogiński’s compositions. The band focuses on urban tradition in Jewish music. Simple, almost minimalistic arrangements and performances enables the audience to listen to the sounds characteristic for contemporary Jewish. Now, the band performs mostly countryside Jewish music from Galicja. By processing the dances such as “frejlaks”, „turkiszer”, or “voleks” through the original sound of the band, it becomes a contemporary repertoire for a modern klezmer orchestra. In 2010, the band released an album Itsikeyt – faragangenheit, which summarized its activity. In July this year, they released another album Wilde Blumen. Most of the time the band is a quartet, from time to time inviting special guests, such as: Frank London, Maria Raducanu, Eyal Talmudi, Yuval “Tuby” Zlotov, Mikołaj Trzaska and others. It performed in numerous festivals in Poland and abroad. www.myspace.com/cukunft
