Singapore Indesign The Event: Sat 4 Oct 2014 singaporeindesign.com.sg 1
This year marks the third time Singapore Indesign, previously known as Saturday in Design, returns to this city. It has been four years since the event debuted in Singapore, and the response we’ve received through the years has been nothing short of overwhelming. Naturally, we are proud to present our best edition yet.
Singapore Indesign continues to celebrate this city’s vibrant architecture and design scene, connecting showrooms and pop-up spaces right in the heart of the city. More importantly, it continues to encourage meaningful interactions between industry players.
Taking a step further in this direction, we debut Launch Pad Asia, a competition and mentorship programme for young designers. Already an established programme in Australia, we kick off the Asian edition at Singapore Indesign this year.
This is a significant year for The Event, not least because of the rebranding of Saturday in Design events under the parent banner Indesign: The Event. We are excited to introduce the newly rebranded Sydney Indesign, Singapore Indesign, Hong Kong Indesign, Melbourne Indesign and Brisbane Indesign. This unified identity echoes our intent to create strong ties among the various design communities across Australia and Asia.
For now, Singapore Indesign takes the spotlight with a slew of programmes and activities that make up the perfect design day out. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have putting it together for you.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Singapore Indesign The Event: Sat 4 Oct 2014 singaporeindesign.com.sg 7
This year, we’ve invited several well-known and respected names in design to represent us as Ambassadors. Hear what they have to say about the creative scene in Singapore, and their hopes for the future.
Meet Our Singapore Indesign Ambassadors
Arthur Chin and Yah-Leng Yu Arthur Chin and Yah-Leng Yu are the founders of creative branding and design studio Foreign Policy Design Group. Active supporters of the local design scene, they are part of a rising generation of independent designers that is changing the creative scene in Singapore.
“We hope to see more and more independent design studios putting out more and more outstanding works, and at the same time bringing design awareness and maturity to the next level. It has been very heartwarming to see Singapore design starting to take off – not just graphic design but also interior design, product design, fashion design, etc. With that we also hope that the value of design will be raised and that our government will be able to succinctly apply design principles to policy-making and public service.”
George Budiman George Budiman is a respected figure in the Singapore interior design scene and the founder of Cynosure Design Group. He is also currently the President of Interior Design Confederation Singapore.
“That Singapore can be a city with flourishing creative enterprise and talent, and that it can gain support from society, and also from different government agencies, not merely solo agencies. This will offer designers the opportunity to create sustainable programmes and develop and promote their own original branding. With all these elements in place, we’ll eventually have designs from Singapore that are made in Asia and aimed at the global market.”
Natalie Louey Natalie Louey is the Director and Head of Interiors at ONG&ONG and is one of the most forward-thinking female designers in the industry. Her recent projects include the rebranding of Singapore Airlines’ Silverkris Lounges, starting with the one in Sydney.
“I feel that Singapore has always been a place where opportunities abound. The design scene in Singapore’s future offers the opportunity to develop in many different areas from built environment to interiors, and from social media to product design. Our community is exposed to design influences from many cultures and backgrounds, and since we are in this mixing pot of influence, the design boundaries are not confined but opened to a much more diverse approach to design in general.”
Tanya Suvannapong Tanya Suvannapong is principal at HASSELL Singapore and has led its team in designing some of the most cutting-edge offices in the region such as dtac Bangkok and Credit Suisse Singapore.
“That Singapore remains bold enough to search out new ideas by leveraging international expertise without losing its unique cultural diversity.”
Talenia Phua Gajardo Multi-talented and entrepreneurial, Talenia Phua Gajardo is the founder of multi-disciplinary design practice T+, which delves into the realms of architecture, interior design and product design. Talenia is also the director of The Artling, an online gallery that supports and sells the work of Asian artists.
“The return to craft, and more material research and design experimentation!”
Patrick ChiaPatrick Chia is a well-known and respected figure in the local design scene, and is the Founding Director of the National University of Singapore’s Design Incubation Centre (DIC). Under his leadership, DIC conducts design research and investigations into new tools and processes that explore and expand new possibilities for the design practice in Singapore.
“The idea of being a farmer or the idea that our children could choose to be farmers instead of lawyers and doctors seems far fetch in the Singapore now. However, what is possible or not is really limited by our imagination. I hope that with design as a tool to re-imagine and a tool to build, we are able to envision, entertain and make possible such possibilities.”
Peter Tay Principal of Peter Tay Studio, Peter Tay’s clients include Hollywood star Zhang Ziyi, so it’s no surprise he’s become known as the interior designer to Singapore’s high society. Tay’s work spans the gamut of luxury projects from residential apartments to niche retail boutiques.
“I hope that in the future, interior design would not only be led by interior designers, but by everyone – from artists to filmmakers, bankers and travellers. Everyone would be able to participate in the design process, allowing each individual’s unique personality and background to emerge in the design of the space.”

“The idea for the chair came
about as a way to regain some
privacy amidst the increased
density of city living, be it at the
workplace or in public spaces.
In a room of people, sometimes
the only way to gain some
private moment is to retreat to
the window, to the view outside.
This design turns this retreat
into a chair. Like an inverse oriel,
the chair carves out a spatial
chamber by placing itself next
to a fixture on the threshold
between the room interior and
exterior – the window. This
chamber extrudes from the
window, forming the enclosure
and the backrest before turning
into the actual seat itself.
Daylight fills the chamber from
outside in while the chamber
walls direct views out. Turning
its back on the rest of the room,
it replaces the old threshold by
being the new one. Designed
for one person, it provides a
momentary withdrawal into
a space so private that the
entrance disappears right after
the entry.”

“The dining area is seen as
the place where the family
comes together to reconnect
over a meal after a long day at
work. However, due to hectic
lifestyles in Singapore, we have
compromised the need for dining
together as a unit. Rather, we
have brought our meals to our
work desks and some even
have it in front of the television.
I feel that this short amount of
time spent at the dining table is
something that we should not
sacrifice. Thus, having a table
that would suit both working and
dining would be one of the best
inventions.”

“I wanted to design a set of
lights inspired by the play of
lightness and balance. How can
I use a material that is heavy, yet
make it look light?
The copper blocks used are cut-
offs, hence the design puts them
to good and beautiful use.”

“We were inspired by the
simplicity and functionality
of industrial work lights; they
are handy, powerful, and most
of all unassuming in terms
of aesthetics. With SPOT,
we retained the mobility of
conventional torches and
industrial work lights, as well
as the dynamic rotational
movement of theatrical stage
lights. We are introducing an
element of playfulness into this
refreshing design of a functional
light. Our vision for the design
was something economic and
simple, yet super versatile.
The elegant aesthetics of the
light allows you to place it

inappropriate or obtrusive.”

The Evolution of Hospitality Spaces in the Workplace
The primary function of the typical office has been to provide a space for staff to conduct their business, with limited consideration to secondary, softer functions and environments.
With the evolution of the workspace, however, more consideration is now being given to client and external vendor engagement, as well as overall staff wellbeing. Client facing spaces have become more common with the enhancement of meeting spaces and support facilities to provide a comfortable and exclusive environment that can cater for dining, evening events and functions. That said, this is very much dependent on the type of business, budget and need for such spaces, the message the company wants to project to their clients/vendors as well as the latter’s expectations.
From an employee perspective, the traditional office space has become more open plan with the introduction of softer areas, such as collaboration spaces, breakouts, canteens and quiet/chill out areas. We are also seeing the introduction of showers, changing rooms, luggage storage and in some cases even private bedrooms to cater for staff travel and work patterns.
One thing’s for certain - as the way we work undergoes profound change, so too are our office environments. And that includes our hospitality spaces.
Want to see what happens when Singapore’s most innovative designers are invited to push the boundaries of workplace hospitality design? The winners of Merx and Indesign Media’s ”Serving Hospitality in the Office” competition will be revealed at 2pm at the Red Dot Design Museum at Singapore Indesign. Look out for it!

Design DirectionsTrend is not a word I like to use, because it implies something fleeting and insubstantial. I prefer to talk about themes in furniture, fittings, finishes, lighting, technology/appliances and equipment. They are collective, meaningful movements towards something, not empty edicts for the un-educated in design.
I also like to get beneath the surface of what these themes are, to explore what they mean or reflect. The cause and effect model gives these themes much greater relevance to a discussion of design, in my mind.
In addition, context is important. Economically, we are still feeling the effects of the GFC. But in the process of stripping back through necessity, we’re rediscovering the beauty of the simple, the natural and the understated.
So with that out of the way, what will we be seeing at Singapore Indesign: The Event in 2014? Traditionally, Indesign: The Event has been the Milan of Singapore, where those of us who didn’t make the European pilgrimage can experience some of the best international products, as well as the latest from our local designers and brands.
Here’s some of what we glimpsed from Milan, and our predictions for what we’ll be seeing at the event this year —
Colour — With everyone feeling vulnerable, softer #neutral and #pastelpalettes are comforting. The bold, bright colours and patterns of the 1980s and, the stark minimalism of the late 1990s and early 2000s took a nosedive with the stock market. Palettes from the 1950s (the good old days) are updated to suit our modern homes and workplaces. That’s not to say there are no bright colours at all – but you’ll see them more in smaller, loose items rather than larger or fixed products. #Black is one strategic way to make a design statement, without the fear (and we have a lot of that lurking around these days) of having a use-by-date.
Texture — #Naturalfinishes, and finishes inspired by natural elements such as #timber and #stone, abound. Bespoke approaches in stone and #glass such as hand-blowing or hand-finishing are the element of #luxury in an otherwise frugal or pared-back aesthetic. #Metal, particularly copper and brass, appeals through its material qualities which ripen with age. These are not
finishes that need to be replaced, rather their appeal and uniqueness increases over time.
If colour is conservative, #texture is where we are pushing the boundaries and it’s no surprise that we’re putting a lot of emphasis on this touchy-feely sense. It’s a sign of us moving from a gross or simplistic relationship with our interiors, towards a more subtle experience.
Form — Again, we want to feel warm and cosy. So #organicshapes and #nostalgic, #retroforms have been on the rise for some time. #Comfort is crucial; even in commercial environments we’re seeing softer, residential-like furniture pieces, particularly in breakout and reception areas. Companies and brands want to engage, rather than impress, and many are achieving this through welcoming, non-aggressive forms.
But don’t worry, OCD designers and architects. There is always a place for straight edges and neat, #minimal pieces, especially in compact designs where space is at a premium. Here, straight lines and seamless #tessellation make the most of what’s available, but even these more #geometric forms will have more rounded edges and corners.
Lighting — Our understanding of #light is becoming more in-depth, as we become more aware of the detrimental effects of incorrect lighting. This element of design plays a crucial role in creating environments for work, relaxation and play. Whether designing to maximise #naturallight, or implementing correct #tasklighting, appropriate ambient lighting or evocative mood lighting, understanding of purpose, knowledge and spatial strategies create the brief for specification.
#Technology enables us to control our lighting levels like never before, and we’re also grateful that technical developments allow us to make responsible choices in terms of energy output. As we move from the glaringly obvious to the subtle glow of a new era, finally, we are starting to see the light.
Bathrooms— Often the only sanctuary from the busyness of our daily lives, the bathroom is so important to our physical, mental and emotional health and #wellbeing. In recognising the importance of de-stressing, the rituals of bathing are becoming more prominent, and even public in some residential projects with baths and basins
(in all their #pedestal glory), venturing into wide hallways and onto landings. #Organic or bold forms can be equally sculptural and appropriate in these cases.
Systems — The world we live in today is comprised of complex #systems – information, physical products and services. Similarly, our furniture is an ecology of interrelating parts, rather than single pieces that just happen to be sitting next to each other. Whether they are quite literally part of the same family or range, or whether they ‘speak’ to each other in more abstract ways, each piece is considered within the context of the greater whole.
#ABW is a perfect example of this, where furniture enables #flexibility of function. No longer is one way of working prescribed; instead we are creating various spaces that cater to and encourage a diverse range of activities in the workspace, through the furniture, finishes and lighting. But, like sustainability, this is no longer a revolutionary concept, but something which is becoming ingrained in the products on offer.
Companies and brands want to engage, rather than impress, and many are achieving this through welcoming, non-aggressive forms.

A look at the power of sensory branding in the ever-changing retail experience
Buying Into Scents
I remember my first encounter with sensory retail in the nineties. It was a chilly day on the streets of London when all of a sudden, I was accosted by the smell of the tropics. The exotic fragrance of mango, coconut and citrus fruits wafted through the air on what seemed like a summery sea breeze. But the promise of a tropical paradise was quickly punctured by a smorgasbord of incompatible smells that could be vaguely described as pumpkin pie cooked with cotton candy and bubble gum. The discordant scents overwhelmed my senses, transforming the initially pleasant reverie into an olfactory nightmare. I quickly identified the culprit—an upmarket store hawking bath products and perfumes—and made my escape.
Today, scent marketing has become less of a hit-and-miss speculation, and more of an inexact science. Some marketeers see it as the “next big thing”—a promising offspring of Environmental Psychology and Branding. And if you think it all smells a little fishy (pardon the pun), “nose-worthy” research has shown that there is a close connection between smells and the memory and emotional cognitive processes. The presence of scents—even those that are
barely perceptible—can affect brand recognition and perception. “Pleasant” aromas can improve the way a consumer regards a brand, and used appropriately, can even encourage consumers to spend money. For example, the scent of baby powder in a baby store appeals to a mother’s memory, while exotic and tropical scents such as coconut often complement the merchandise in the Swimwear section of a department store.
Sensory consultants are alchemists who not only have to consider the impact of the individual scents but how the customers’ perception of these scents morph in conjunction with factors such as colour, texture, lighting and even music. An interesting piece of research has shown that consistency between an ambient scent and music in a retail setting can lead to favorable evaluations of the store and its merchandise. Other researchers have also shown that in a scented bank environment, customers rated the queue as shorter, the service as better, and were less likely to become irritable. All these point to the untapped potential of scent in business.
In Singapore, more and more retailers are turning to sensory branding to differentiate their brands. For example, the luxury label Shanghai
Tang has been associated with the Oriental scent of ginger flowers since December 1999. ION Orchard mall, with the help of scent consultant AllSense, has created a customised scent concocted from herbs, fruits and flowers to set its retail space apart from the surrounding transition spaces.
Terry Jacobson, Chief Experience Officer at AllSense, believes that retailers need to create a complete experience for their customers by going beyond pure audio and visual stimuli. “We find that the use of scent can create powerful memories and emotions, which when paired with a brand, become a powerful and unforgettable brand experience,” he says.
Perhaps then, there really is a way of conjuring up the sweet smell of success.

Singapore Indesign The Event: Sat 4 Oct 2014 singaporeindesign.com.sg 31
What is the best-kept secret about Red Dot?We keep no secrets! Perhaps what most people do not know is that Red Dot in Singapore is a true-blue Singapore start up. Although the Red Dot Design Award is a 61-year-old award, what was achieved in Singapore is an all-Singaporean effort. In 2004, I convinced Red Dot in Germany to allow me to start a museum in Singapore and launch an entirely new international award for conceptual design. With some support from the Economic Development Board and the DesignSingapore Council, my team and I built the museum and international award from nothing to what it is today.
What plans are in store for Red Dot in the future? The museum will soon reinvent itself. When you visit the museum in the near future, we want you to “See” design, “Eat” design,
“Buy” design and “Find” design! It will be a completely new and exciting experience. We are also planning to build a new museum.
What do you look forward to in Singapore's design future?I hope design in Singapore will receive the same attention and investment from the Government as art. I also hope the design community in Singapore can learn to appreciate and embrace the creative achievements of fellow Singaporeans and Singapore residents more. We need to have more “Singapore spirit” in order to nurture design. I hope the Government can look inward rather than outward, believe in our local design talents and give them opportunities.
