Dear SIEDC Supporter,

Fall is here, which means we’re all busy gearing up our businesses for the holidays and the new year! Much of this edition of our Newsletter is focused on 2016, like our 20 Under 40 Awards, SIEDC Business Conference and expanding Neighborhood Development projects.

Thanksgiving is around the corner, and we wanted to take some time to list what we’re grateful for in 2015:• Our 200 SIEDC members whose support has allowed us to create 2 officially designated Business Improvement Districts, 4 merchant associations (and more on the way) to improve Staten Island neighborhoods and help small businesses thrive.• Our supporters and sponsors who allowed us to host 6 successful events this year and more coming up.• Our elected officials who are making a difference in our community, such as NYC Councilman Steven Matteo who helped launch the New Dorp Merchants Group and the Richmond Road Merchants Association, Councilman-Elect Joe Borelli for his support of the Richmond Valley MerchantsAssociation and the South Shore Business Improvement District.

Enjoy reading. Have a wonderful holiday season!

How SIEDC is Improving Your NeighborhoodIn 2015, SIEDC took the lead in Neighborhood Development for the borough by managing six different projects - at least one in every council district on the island.

This year, SIEDC became the only organization in New York City to ever launch two Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in the same calendar year. We currently oversee the third indu-strial BID in the City: the West Shore BID, and the largest geographic BID: the South Shore BID

With the assistance of Councilman Steven Matteo, Vincent Ignizio and Councilman-Elect Joe Borelli, SIEDC has expanded its service area to New Dorp Lane, Richmond Road in Dongan Hills, Richmond Terrace in Mariners Harbor and Richmond Valley on the South Shore. SIEDC will also be doing street beautification in Huguenot early next year.

These Neighborhood Development efforts have enhanced over 1,000 businesses by providing a variety of services including sanitation, security, marketing & events, street banners, beautification and advocacy.

SIEDC Raises a Flag for its Most Successful Development ProjectsSince 1993, SIEDC has assisted businesses with expansion and relocation projects. Whether help was needed with financing, permitting, navigating government agencies or installing utilities, together we were there, and we still are. SIEDC held the first flag raising ceremony at Indoor Extreme Sports, in the West Shore Business Improvement District (BID), which converted an abandoned warehouse into an indoor laser tag and paint ball facility. On October 15, 2015, the second flag was raised at the Vanderbilt at South Beach, which is perhaps the most important addition to the redeveloped Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk. Future Flag Raising Ceremonies are scheduled at the Southport Plaza on South Avenue, Pratt Industries, Cubit Power, Howland Hook, ADCO Electrical and the New York Fragrance Warehouse.

How SIEDC Manages NYC’s Largest Geographic BID in the South Shore

SIEDC NEWSLETTER

After much anticipation, the South Shore BID is ready to kick off services for 2016. Signed into law by Mayor de Blasio in March of 2015, it is a collective agreement by over 200 property owners in Eltingville, Great Kills, and Annadale to reinvest their own money to help improve economic conditions and the general quality of life within the towns. It is the largest geographic BID in the City of New York and the only non-contiguous BID.

This fall, the board of directors has been organizing the structure of the BID, working with the New York City Department of Small Business Services to finalize legal and administrative paperwork, acquire office space, and hire an Executive Director. In January, the BID will become operational and start to execute a comprehensive economic development strategy including security, sidewalk sweeping, beautification, collective marketing, policy advocacy, and events. In preparation for that start date, major efforts have been undertaken to continue improving economic development opportunities in the area.

On June 6, 2015 Richmond County Savings Bank in Annadale, the train station at the foot of Brower Court in Great Kills and the Richmond County Savings Bank in Eltingville played host to Family Fun Day. The event featured free activities designed to celebrate families while also encouraging economic growth. Provided were activities for adults and their children including bounce houses, face-painting, balloon artists, a live DJ and a variety of rides and games. Families were encouraged to stroll through the hosting towns afterwards, and experience local businesses.

Affordable office space will serve as a central component for the BID and will promote the adaptive re-use of a vacant building, retain, and attract small businesses to these historic neighborhood corridors and demonstrate the importance of collective planning and marketing for the entire BID area.

The BID will be celebrating its launch with a Christmas tree lighting event on Friday, December 4th from 7 PM to 9 PM in Annadale Green.

The West Shore Business Improvement District (BID) in the Bloomfield and Chelsea sections has been a remarkable success in its first year. It is the first BID signed into law by Mayor de Blasio, managed by SIEDC and has developed a variety of programs to assist businesses in the district.

The West Shore BID has private security and private maintenance services, and has placed street pole banners around the area along with ten garbage receptacles to reduce littering. Major quality of life efforts have included cutbacks of vegetative overgrowth, numerous pothole repairs, and cleanups of traffic medians by the Borough President’s Clean Team. The BID is also working with the New York City Parks Department to clean up vacant parkland which suffers from extreme illegal dumping and overgrowth.

The BID is now tackling tough issues including the restoration of Saw Mill Creek, flooding issues along Bloomfield Avenue and SIEDC will launch the West Shore Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) study later this year.

Perhaps most importantly, five new firms have moved to the BID this year including Indoor Extreme Sports, Richmond Ready Mix, Fly High Trampoline, Lickety Split and Richmond Materials. The area is truly a thriving industrial space in New York City.

The New Dorp Merchants Group continued a tradition that started last year with the Second Annual Columbus Day Festival on Monday, October 12, hosted in the Santander Parking Lot on New Dorp Lane. The event drew over 1,200 people, and featured a DJ and live music, children’s activities, bounce houses, face painting and a full Bocce Tournament with prizes for the winners. This year, a concerted effort was made to integrate the merchants further down New Dorp Lane into the festivities and many held outdoor sidewalk sales, while offering food for sale with substantial discounts.

This fall, SIEDC hired JCM Cleaning for street cleaning and tree maintenance services. The service will be conducted twice a week, four hours each day. A brochure has also been designed, printed, and mailed for the Group’s 2015 fundraising campaign.

In November, Christmas Lights will be placed along the Lane & Plaza, and the 2nd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on December 2nd from 7 PM to 9 PM. The event and tree will be centered around the World War II Memorial on the corner of New Dorp Lane and 9th Street.

Councilman Steven Matteo and SIEDC Join Together to Help Businesses Along Richmond Road

Richmond Valley Merchants Association Kicks Off

SIEDC and Councilman Steven Matteo have launched the Richmond Road Merchants Association, and it is off to a terrific start. One of the biggest concerns of the merchants is branding the area as a collective neighborhood. Located at the intersection of 3 distinct neighborhoods, Richmond Road seeks to establish its own identity. Many of the start-up services provided follow in the footsteps of the New Dorp Merchants Group. After performing a needs assessment survey report, SIEDC determined that the association would benefit most from sidewalk sweepings, tree maintenance, streetpole banners, window posters and decals for each business, and holiday lighting.

To generate further excitement for the association, planning is underway for a Christmas Tree Lighting event. The tree lighting will be held at the NYFD Firehouse on Four Corners Road, centrally located in the commercial corridor. This event, coupled with the planned marketing, will undoubtedly draw shoppers to the area on Sunday, December 13, 2015 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Richmond County Savings Foundation has committed to a matching grant in support of SIEDC’s efforts on Richmond Road. A complete budget is being developed based on this newly available funding.

The Richmond Valley Merchants Association launched in August 2015 to serve the commercial corridors of Page Avenue, Arthur Kill Road, Amboy Road, Charleston Shopping Center, Veterans Road West and Richmond Valley Road. The goal of the merchants association is to enhance services allowing small businesses to be more competitive, to analyze strip mall vacancies, and provide rehabilitation of surrounding roads and sidewalks. These efforts will create a safe and clean commercial environment, encouraging local businesses to participate in collective marketing, promotions, and events.

As ambitious as it is new, the merchants association has formalized a steering committee, completed a needs assessment and is planning to host a Christmas tree lighting event on December 3, 2015 at 6 p.m. in the Sonic parking lot, near the corner of Page Avenue and Richmond Valley Road. Planned services for 2016 include sidewalk sweeping and tree maintenance, banner installation and a restaurant stroll in the spring. Funding for the Richmond Valley Merchants Association is being provided by former Councilman Ignizio and the SIEDC will provide management services on behalf of the association. The Richmond County Savings Foundation has also assisted the merchants groups by providing a grant of $90,000 to support efforts here and in other areas.

Through a long standing contract with NYC Small Business Services Industrial Business Zone (IBZ) the SIEDC has been working hard to make sure that the industrial manufacturing and transportion firms have the knowledge, capital and workspace to succeed in their sector. The program provides firms with free services such as navigating government, incentives, enrollment training programs and financing assistance.

In its navigational capacity, the SIEDC has helped resolve 35 governmental issues, ranging from potholes and electrical malfunctions to helping secure a Certificate of Occupancy. Staff had a 4-day turnaround in reporting and repairing a pothole in the West Shore Business Improvement District, aided a client in erecting a billboard near his new property concurrently helping him to secure a Certificate of Occupancy, and during Labor Day weekend ensured the correction of a clients’ power outage.

The IBZ program allows businesses to secure tax abatements and save money. Half of the incentives that were secured this year have been the Industrial and Commercial Abatement Program, otherwise known as ICAP. This program provides tax abatements for up to 25 years; it is by far the most popular program in the Industrial Sector. SIEDC has also helped companies to secure Industrial Development Agency packages (IDA), and enroll in both the Energy Cost Savings Program and Relocation Employment Assistance Program. The SIEDC has helped 10 different companies this year.

The end of 2015 is approaching fast – do you need last minute financing? SIEDC will increase your chances of getting a loan. If you need money to start a business or to expand an established business, SIEDC can help you secure the financing you need by helping you identify lenders and package your loan application. Also don’t forget about investing in your workforce; they are vital to ensuring that your business is operating in an effective manner.

Please contact Christopher Glancy if you are in interested in any of the IBZ programs: 718-477-1400 x810 [email protected]

How SIEDC is transforming the Terrace

SIEDC, in partnership with the property owners and businesses along the Richmond Terrace corridor, formed the Richmond Terrace Development Corporation in July of 2015. This long-awaited initiative is in response to years of requests for a solidified plan to promote and sustain businesses along Richmond Terrace by addressing both quality of life and economic development issues.

The development corporation will provide supplemental services such as private security, sanitation, maintenance and banners for marketing, making the neighborhood an attractive place to do business and invest.

In July 2015, the SIEDC was awarded the Avenue NYC grant by the Department of Small Business Services. Avenue NYC provides funding for Community Based Development Organizations in low-to moderate-income communities across the five boroughs to implement commercial revitalization activities that benefit businesses and local residents.

Over a period of three months, SIEDC interviewed 93 business and property owners throughout the area, most of which are industrial and maritime businesses. The needs assessment allowed SIEDC to also meet with and support the vital industries along the corridor, which until now had not had much interaction with SIEDC.

Revealed in the assessment were numerous quality of life issues including crime, littering, poor road conditions and overgrowth. The SIEDC engaged in a letter-writing campaign involving several city agencies and elected officials. The letters highlighted immediate improvement services the City can provide to the neighborhood. The Richmond Terrace Development Corporation will host a meeting in December with city agency representatives to discuss proposals for commercial revitalization.

She plans to use skills honed during positions with the New York Wheel and Make-A-Wish Foundation as she works closely with both SIEDC’s Events and Membership divisions on recruitment, sponsorship solicitation, and event planning.

Lonnie is the new West Shore Program Manager. In that capacity, he is responsible for overseeing development of the West Shore Brownfield Opportunity Area, advocating for funding of a Light Rail, and managing issues facing tenants and owners within the Industrial Business Improvement District. Lonnie holds a BA in History and Political Science from the College of Staten Island, as well a Professional Certificate in Public Relations from New York University. He spent several years learning the inner machinations of government, working for Assemblyman Titone, before joining SIEDC this year.
